What You Need To Know About Neuropathy

Tuesday, June 28, 2016

I was at the Neuropathy Awareness Campaign of Merck Inc., Philippines last June 27, 2016 at the Market!Market Activity Center and it was only then that I learned I am suffering from nerve damage. The campaign is on its 3rd year of raising awareness for nerve care. This year's theme is "Helping True Heroes".

According to Ms. Debbie Go, Head of Marketing for Merck Consumer Health, "True Heroes are everyday people who push their own boundaries and go the extra mile for the benefit of others." Merck and Neurobion want to make sure that these Filipino heroes are capable of doing extraordinary tasks with healthy nerves.

What You Need To Know About Neuropathy

Five years ago, I was taking 1,500 mg of Metformin a day. I had to deal with the side effects for a year. Imagine having a bad headache and diarrhea every single day. I usually stay at home because of the discomfort. I lost a few kilos. I look sick. I gradually stop the medication and looked for a healthier option. I wasn't aware that there is another side effect -- nerve damage.

I remember feeling a burning sensation on my palms and I can't explain why. It went on for a few days and I was really worried something might be wrong with me. I also noticed that I have been having difficulty opening twist cap bottles. And my grip of the tennis racket is weak. I didn't know anything about neuropathy until Dr. Bien Matawaran explained the symptoms at the event.

The Causes
  • diabetes
