Quim's Cake: The Chef, The Promise and More

7/3/16

I was invited last July 1 to sample the exciting food on the menu of Quim's Cake Bakeshop & Cafe in Tomas Morato. Coincidentally, it was also the day of Chef Jack Labang's fulfillment of his promise to give out free slices of cakes. In case you were not active on social media during the campaign and elections period, Chef and Quim's Cake co-owner Chef Jack made a public post on his Facebook that if ever Rodrigo Duterte wins the presidential bid, he will be giving 5 million worth of cakes to the Filipino people. The post went viral. Thousands of Duterte supporters felt insulted with the post thus the bashing, threats and malicious internet memes.

The Chef

Chef Jack Labang

International Pastry Chef Eliaquim Labang who is more famously known as Chef Jack instantly became famous in a not so positive way when he posted his sentiments on his Facebook account about Duterte. He admitted that somehow Duterte's uncertainty to run for the highest position in the government "inspired" that post which has placed him in a very uncomfortable and stressful situation. He apologized for making the statement that gave the people an impression of him as arrogant. But like a real man true to his word, he is indeed giving away 5 million worth of cakes.

The FREE Cake

Taking into consideration the cost, preparation time and the volume of cakes to be given away, the cakes will be distributed in batches spread over until such time the 5 million worth of cakes has been fulfilled. Those who wish to receive free cake sample must register. Now, be careful because there are fake accounts and events on Facebook whose purpose is to create confusion and hate. Only those who followed the mechanics posted on the official Facebook account https://www.facebook.com/quimscakebakeshopcafe/ will receive a confirmation e-mail. You need to print out a copy of the e-mail when you claim your free cake on your scheduled date.

There's More To Quim's Than FREE Cake

As I've mentioned, I was at Quim's Cake Bakeshop & Cafe to have a feast on some of band vocalist turned Chef  and Pangasinan pride Jhollow Ignacio's creations. Chef Jhollow was educated at Senor Tesoro Culinary School in Lingayen, Pangasinan. If the name rings a bell, it's because he has guested several times at Unang Hirit and Umagang Kay Ganda.

The Foodie and the Chef

Let me share with you the interesting dishes on the menu of Quim's Cake Bakeshop & Cafe. Ready?

Red Hot Dory Burger

The Red Hot Dory Burger is made of crispy and spicy cream dory fillet wrapped in bacon strip with lettuce for the added crunch smothered with mayonaisse sriracha sauce sandwiched in a red bun. Having watched Finding Dory two nights prior to this event, I find it difficult to eat this burger. But hunger overpowered my emotional attachment to the movie so I must say, "I found Dory and I ate her."

Pulled Pork BBQ Burger

I'm a fan of anything BBQ and the Pulled Pork BBQ Burger immediately captured my fancy. And though I love the movie "Babe Pig In The City" I devoured this with gusto. The pulled pork was flavorful and the smoky goodness of the homemade BBQ sauce was perfect.

Bolognese Pasta

Craving for something Italian? Aside from the Garlic Shrimp Pizzeta, you can have some Italian feast with their pasta selection. The Bolognese Pasta is a perfect blend of beef, tomatoes, wine, special herbs and spices.

Other pasta choices are Basil Moringga Pesto, Hungarian Pasta, Hondashi Pasta, Heartbreaker Pasta and Spicy Binagoongan Pasta.

Wait, I know you got curious with the Heartbreaker Pasta. One thing for sure, it doesn't have anything to do with #hugot and #walangforever. Go visit Quim's Cake to find out!

Sashimi Mango Sinigang

Sashimi Mango Sinigang is a fusion of a Filipino favorite and a Japanese delicacy. The dish is served without the soup yet. The hot mango puree broth is served in a separate bowl to be poured over onto the salmon sashimi and vegetables. A definitely must order!

Roasted Pork Belly in Choco-Bagoong Sauce

The Roasted Pork Belly in Choco-Bagoong Sauce is the surprise treat of the day for me. It was my first time to eat a viand with chocolate. The skin of the roasted pork belly is super crunchy while the meat is very tender. The homemade binagoongan is perfectly blended with a hint of chocolate.  And me being a confessed rice eater had to request for rice to really enjoy this meal.

Moist Chocolate Cake

I had the Moist Chocolate Cake for dessert which I devoured when I got home. This is also the cake given out to those who registered for the free cake.  Perfect with coffee they say. I'm not a coffee drinker but I enjoyed this with ice cold lemonade.

Chef Jack Labang committed a faux pas that has left a lasting arrogant impression about him to thousands of people. He is sincerely sorry to those he offended. He is staying true to his promise. Still some people have something to say about the gesture. Some people don't want a slice. They want the whole cake. Some people just want to spread hate.  Let us stop spreading malicious stories and events on Facebook. It's sad that some people were misled with wrong information and went to Quim's Cake last June 30 to claim and left empty-handed.

We are all looking forward to a better Philippines. We are all very excited to see the change coming with President Duterte leading us. I did not vote for Duterte. I'm for Miriam. But I'm happy that Duterte won the elections. I also want change. I want a better Philippines.
