What if I tell you that you there's a rice cooker that can make the rice you eat healthier, would you believe me? When I was invited to the media launch of Grayns, the first and only rice cooker in the world that reduces starch out of rice, I got so excited and at the same time curious. I know it sounds too good to be true. Some of you will even ask with raised eyebrow, how is it even possible?

When I was diagnosed in 2010 with a borderline Type 2 Diabetes, my endocrinologist put me on a strict diet along with the metformin I had to take. I am a rice-eater and I can consume 3-4 cups of white rice especially when I like the viand. When the doctor told me to reduce my rice intake to 1 cup for breakfast and lunch and 1/2 cup for dinner, it was the saddest day of my life. How could I survive with less rice?!

What is wrong with rice?

A 100 grams of white rice contains 80 grams of carbohydrates and is made up of two kinds of starch. The rapidly digestible starch (RDS) which is high in white rice, and is responsible in spiking blood sugar level. High sugar level in the blood can cause several diseases such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and cholesterol to name a few.

How does Grayns make rice healthier?

The Grayns REVOCOOK technology cooks rice in 4 stages:
  1. Thermosense provides just the right cooking temperature to gelatinize the rice thereby releasing the unhealthy RDS into the water, yet retaining the vital nutrition and minerals.
  2. Debond  stage intuitively holds the gelatinization temperature compelling most of the RDS to get out of the rice.
  3. The RDS is then transuded and drained away into the starch collection tray.
  4. The final stage is demoisturizing the rice to make it fluffy, healthy and delicious.

Benefits of Grayns Rice

  • lower glycemic index
  • easy to digest
  • healthier for those with diabetes
  • can aid in weight loss
  • doesn't spoil easily
During the media launch, we were able to taste the white rice cooked using Grayns. The cooking process did not really affect the taste of the rice. It's like the regular rice that we eat except that when you keep on chewing, you'd notice that the hint of sweet taste is gone thus making the rice a bit bland.

Grayns retail at PhP27,000 and is available in Rustan's and Abenson BGC. Learn more about Grayns Rice Cooker at https://www.facebook.com/graynsph/
