Commonly Misunderstood Health Problems

12/19/19

The world of medicine is incredibly complicated. Even the things that are considered the most basic are still filled with complications.

In this post, we are going to be looking at some health problems that are generally very misunderstood. Hopefully, by the end of this post, you will feel more informed about the issues we talk about, and it will encourage you to find out more about common health problems and precisely what they are.

Why People Misunderstand Certain Health Problems

Well, generally speaking, we have the internet to blame for that, and with older medical misconceptions, we also have television and movies to thank.

It may shock some of you to find out, but these sources are sometimes so convincing; doctors have actually been known to believe some of them too. In the following section, we are going to take a look at a few health problems and hopefully straighten a few things out.

Problems With The Brain

The human brain is an extremely complicated thing, and of course, along with those complications comes a plethora of problems.

Because the brain is so complicated, it can be very difficult to put out fingers on why some things happen. For example, even after all these years, we still don’t fully understand many dementia causes and symptoms, but there are some problems that we do understand that are just misunderstood by the big wide world.

One of the most misunderstood things with the brain is schizophrenia; most people believe that this means you have multiple personalities. This is not now and has never been what schizophrenia is. Schizophrenia is a behavioral detachment issue and is often confused with multiple personality disorders.

Body

When it comes to the body, there are many medical myths that need busting. One of the most common misunderstandings nowadays is that the flu is just a really bad cold. While the flu may cause you to have some of the symptoms of a cold, the two are very different, and influenza is incredibly dangerous.

In the United States, over 30,000 people per year die because of the flu, and many more are hospitalized. If nothing else, maybe this post will show the importance of getting a flu shot, and doing this will lower your risk of suffering from the full wrath of the flu.

The final thing we are going to talk about today is another illness that has been misrepresented all over the media, and it’s one people think is no longer around. The illness we speak of is called leprosy. If you have heard of leprosy, you have just read that and thought of limbs falling off, right? Well, you are not alone, this is the image that we have been given, but leprosy does nothing of the sort.

Leprosy causes nerve damage in the hands, feet, and face and therefore compromises motor functions in these areas.

Even with the power of the internet today, there are still millions of health myths doing the rounds. If these few have surprised you today, then maybe you should head out and find some more.
