High demand for nurses

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the global shortage of nurses—a challenge that the medical industry has been dealing with since 2016. According to the “State of the World’s Nursing”, a report released by the World Health Organization, there was a global shortage of 5.9 million nurses in 2018, a statistic which has been highly exacerbated during the pandemic.

Now more than ever, the world needs nurses – at least 6 million – to fill the global shortage, and consequently meet the global development goals on health, which are to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being at all ages, including the provision of universal health coverage.

The first week of a new employee

Friday, December 3

When you hire a new employee, no matter what size business you are, the industry you work in, the products and services you make, you will still need to guide them through as you would a client. A new employee is an investment. We never want to say that to them, or even think of them that way in a singular fashion. However we have to be honest. We want to impress this person, because we want them to stay working for us for a long time. We hope that they will be greeted with an air of calm, collected enthusiasm. Yet, many times new employees are given the cold shoulder. This happens without trying and sometimes is due to negligence. Let’s take a look at what you can do to welcome a new employee in their first week.

Tell the other staff

You never want to welcome a new employee without telling the other staff about it. There are a few reasons. Firstly, they should know when the company is hiring. It's not just that they should be forewarned about new people who will enter into their teams, because this will change the working dynamic. But they might also know someone that can fill that role you are trying to advertise.

Lastly, we want to warn other employees because we don’t want them to inadvertently give the new employee the cold shoulder. Employees are doing their tasks and they are focussing. So if you didn’t warn them and the new employee wants to say ‘hi’, they might not pay attention to them and this can come off negatively. It can be really awkward when employees are put on the spot when suddenly meeting a new teammate. They want to give off a good impression, but they feel like they weren’t allowed to prepare for it.

Start them half way during the day

When a new employee begins, you don’t want them to come in to the office at the very start of the day. This is because you will be having meetings, teams will be discussing their performance and managers will be allocating tasks. A new employee is going to spend the first week just learning how to do things the way you want them to be done. So it's best if they stay out of the way when the day is at its most hectic; which is usually the very first couple of hours.

Bring them in at around 10:30 or after lunch. This allows the employees who they will be learning from, time to get the majority of their difficult tasks out of the way in the morning, so they can focus on helping the new guy or girl.

Onboarding them properly

Learning a new software is a huge task for someone, even when they are not under pressure and can take their time. How long would it take you to learn how to properly use a new smartphone? How long would it take you to learn how to properly use a new car’s computer? Anything that involves complex actions, options, settings and tasks, is going to need an effective onboarding scheme.

You can learn more about a managed service provider here and see how they can help you with your very own onboarding program. They can take the software you are using right now, and add in a tutorial on how to use it. This is so helpful as many software nowadays don’t have very good tutorials. You can obviously find many tutorials online, but the way you use the software might be very different to how you see them being used online.

Allow them to explore

For their very first week, just allow them to explore the offices, see what teams are doing and how his or her tasks will play into the grand scheme of things. You don’t just want to sit them down with a bunch of tasks. You want them to see the dynamics of the office, how things work, where they fit in and how your products and services operate. This can give them a picture of what the working environment is like and also, how they can contribute to the overall goal. So don’t be afraid to allow them to walk around the office, observing their new colleagues, asking questions and being given examples of how to do certain things.

The first week of a new employee is always going to be fun, exciting, anxious and eye-opening for the individual coming to work for you. Take things slow, be prepared and allow them time to absorb it all.

Top trends that will shape hybrid working in 2022 and beyond

Monday, November 29

#1: Productivity anywhere will shake up workforce and workplace structure

Remote working has enabled employees to be productive anywhere, everywhere, and anytime. With hybrid working being the default arrangement, business leaders will start looking into providing a more equitable work experience for those inside and outside the office, especially during meetings and group discussions. Willis Tower Watson’s recent 2021 Employee Experience survey found that 90% of APAC employers are prioritizing enhancing the employee experience over the next three years

This collaborative infrastructure will also complement the greater adoption of asynchronous work practices – a trend triggered by the pandemic. It will not just redefine how employees collaborate with one another, but also help businesses rethink hiring practices and tap into a more global and diversified talent pool. Industries have and will continue to change how they work, with decentralised work practices and processes enabling effective business continuity for a workforce that may be largely working from home.

#2: Greater use of A.I. and data analytics in the workplace

According to a survey by Juniper Networks, 95% of respondents said their companies’ daily operations, products and services would benefit from implementing AI technologies. Leaders across the region will start adopting AI and data analytics to support and improve employee productivity and safety, in addition to driving business growth and operational efficiency, as part of their continued digital transformation plan.

IT departments will turn to data and insights to have a more objective view on employee productivity both in the office and when they work remotely. These will help inform decisions on what technology investments to help a hybrid workforce collaborate better. Office managers will also leverage insights such as occupancy data can help office managers determine the most effective office layout, minimise wasted space and reinforce or improve proper safe distancing measures.

#3: Office spaces reimagined for a hybrid future

With employees working remotely half or most of the time, companies are turning to a flexible and cost-effective approach for their office space investment. In Singapore, central business district (CBD) office occupiers could aim to reduce their footprint by 10% to 20% over the next three years, according to Maybank Kim Eng.

There will be a growing adoption of the office on-demand approach to help businesses effectively add on workspaces as needed. On the other hand, companies with existing excess office space can consider subleasing part of that space as needed; this ‘core and flex’ model enables a combination of long-term security for core operations while allowing flexibility for growth. At the same time, companies will start redefining workforce roles and determine which functions are best suited to be based in central business district (CBD) areas, and who can work either remotely or in satellite offices in regional cities or districts.

Business leaders will also look how to make return to office something that employees look forward to. Offices will become collaboration hubs, serving as a place for teams to gather to brainstorm in small groups, host client meetings, celebrate milestones, and work on joint projects. They will also serve as a central hub for community socialisation that will help provide a culture that cannot be replicated via remote working.

Looking ahead: Organisations must invest in technology that improve employee experiences

Companies’ technology investments and collaboration strategies will focus on improving employees’ working experience both remotely and on-site. Users are expecting technology to be easy to use to minimise disruption that may hamper productivity and collaboration, so that they can spend more time getting real work done instead of figuring out how the tools work.

With limitations around business travels and in-person meetings, video conferencing is now the norm for collaboration. This also led to new usage model of videos such as telemedicine, hybrid events, virtual property viewing and educational courses via videos. As such, more and more organisations are adopting a no-compromise attitude to ensure the highest quality video solutions are used for high level productivity, resilience, and customer experience.

This will drive an increased demand in pro-grade technology and collaboration tools that are geared to drive better user experiences. ReportLinker is already forecasting that the Asia Pacific Video Conferencing Market will grow at a CAGR of 17.8% within 2021-2027.This is prime opportunity for collaboration vendors that are platform-agnostic to thrive, as they enable office collaborators to use the same infrastructure in the conference room as they have grown accustomed to using from their home offices.

Reasons Mum's Want To Go Back To Work After A Baby

Sunday, April 4

Every single parent out there knows that a baby is a blessing. They're miracles that change our world, and they become all of our world most of the time, too. The thing is, before we have children we're still parents, and mothers are still women with goals and ambitions. There are some women who are so happy and grateful to be at home and the first point of care for their children - and rightly so, it's what they want so they should have it. However, there are still women who - as much as they love the time spent on maternity leave - want to get back into work to add some stability, money and ambition into their daily lives that goes alongside their motherhood. There is an eternal battle between "working mothers" and "stay at home mothers" about who works the hardest, but the point should be that we all support each other in our efforts with both our goals and our children. EVERY mother is a working mother, it's just that some stay at home to do it.

After maternity leave and spending time as a mother at home, you may well be chomping at the bit to get back into work. You could be figuring out how to start your own business, or you could be figuring out how you can continue your current role remotely. Either of these options has the added stress of working out cyber security solutions to keep data safe in the home, but either way you need to choose which way you want to do things. When you've spent so long at home with the kids and you're gearing up to get back to work, the nerves will set in. It happens to every mother and it's totally normal - if a little inconvenient! So, push the guilt to one side; remember that this is for you and while the children are only little once, they DO grow up and you want to know that you have something to do to keep you feeling alive as a person, too. These are all the reasons that you ever need to get yourself back to work and kill your goals!

  • A Break. Yep, believe it or not, so many mothers go back to work because they could really use the break. It's like a second skin, being a Mother. You're still a mother when you go to work, but you take off that hat and you concentrate on your job. The skills you learn as a parent become invaluable, and they will be transferable into your work, too. Working outside the home offers a breather, a break and a moment of peace from crying, screaming and spit up. You get to dress up and wear good shoes and no one is screaming at you or making demands without manners.

  • The Money. Whether you "need" it or not, you need to consider the money when you are working outside the home. The work you do as a mother comes with kisses, love and plenty of memories and smiles, but it doesn't pay the bills. You need to remember that while money doesn't make the world go around, it does pay the mortgage and it does mean that you can feel that you are financially solvent and stable. It's important to remember that you are an independent person in her own right - and the money can ease the pressure on the household budget, too.

  • The Appreciation. Yes, your children love and appreciate you, and you know that, but at home you carry a mental load beyond the lack of sleep and the physical parenting. You don't get thanked for that nearly as much as you should. When you start your own business or you go back to your work before you had the kids, you get that "thank you", the pat on the back you've been waiting for. You get to feel as if you are appreciated for your efforts rather than doing the things that are expected and not being recognised for it.

  • There's Adults! Ah, the biggest reason so many mothers go back to work: it's a lot less lonely. Don't get me wrong, being with the kids is fun and all, but it's not the same as interacting with other adults! You will be able to have friends and conversations with people who are closer to your age and less likely to throw food at you. Children aren't the best conversationalists, and they have a lot less of a sense of humour!

  • The Accomplishment. The feeling of accomplishment and achievement is enough to fill your cup sometimes! You get to contribute to the family at home, you get to achieve something in your chosen career, and you get to earn money and fill up your savings. It's a three-way win. When you're lonely at home, you're going to forget what it's like to feel like you have the big cheer when you achieve!

  • Self-Improvement. When you are working a job in your chosen career, you get the chance to develop yourself as a person. You can learn new things, expand your skill set and really work to be more responsible and push your career progression to the max. Taking the time to be that successful person you envisioned that you could be is part of achieving your goals! It's so important that you do these things for a healthy mind and it keeps you further away from postnatal depression.

  • Independence. You need more than motherhood to sustain you and your future. Yes, a mother who chooses to quit work can still lead a fulfilling life, though you will have a different level of fulfilment. You'll be able to continue to smash it as a parent while also being an independent, goal-oriented individual!

Going back to work is exciting, and you should consider that it could be the best decision that you make for you and for your family. Whichever way you go - owning a business or working remotely from home - you will smash your goals when you focus on them!

JobStreet.Com 2018 Fresh Graduate Report

Wednesday, April 18

The K-12 program was fully implemented in school year 2012-2013 and the first batch of graduates are joining the workforce in 2018. Like any other fresh graduates, they are eager to land their first jobs and most are anxious about what's in store for them career-wise.

Hiring the Fresh Graduates: The Employers' View

JobStreet.com Philippines, the country's largest online job portal, has conducted a survey among 503 employers nationwide last February 2018. The survey revealed that employers are giving importance on the communication skills and analytical thinking in hiring potential fresh graduates.

In 2015, the employers' main considerations were internship experience, extra-curricular activities and other experience-based qualifications. For 2018, attitude and work ethics took the top spot while communication skills and analytical thinking ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Employers prefer hiring candidates who possess interpersonal and 21st century proficiency. Factors such as task management efficiency, leadership potential, customer empathy, and situational analysis are rated the lowest.

Employers Preferred School

Last year, graduates from Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), University of the Philippines (UP) and Ateneo de Manila Univerity were preferred by most employers. These schools still maintained their ranking for 2018. Two schools outside Metro Manila made it to the list. University of San Carlos ranked 8 while University of Cebu ranked 9. Other schools in the list include University of Santo Tomas (UST), Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP), University of the East (UE), De La Salle University (DLSU), Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), and Far Eastern University (FEU).

When the employers were asked why they prefer graduates from these schools, they pointed out that they believe in the schools' reputation of producing quality graduates and eventual employees.

Job Opportunities and Salaries

According to Philip Gioca, JobStreet.com Philippines Country Manager, more employers are opening their doors to fresh graduates in industries such as BPO, manufacturing, and professional services. In terms of salaries, law graduates are the best paid with an average monthly salary of P27,355. Fresh graduates who are into public relations/communications receive an average monthly salary of P24,675. Those who are specializing in content creation such as content writer, foreign language content translator, and junior technical writer receive an average monthly salary of P22,446.

It is good to note that 50% of the survey respondents are willing to pay the fresh graduate hires more than the minimum wage.

*The JobStreet.com Fresh Graduate Report is based on data from the last quarter of 2017 and a survey to employers conducted in February 2018.

Jobstreet.com Company Reviews: Learn About The Company Before You Apply

Thursday, December 14

Everything is done online nowadays. Technology has made fundamental changes to the way we do business. The traditional workplace of dreary cubicles is nearing obsolescence in the face of modern co-working spaces. Remote working tools are making working from home a viable option for many employees. And now, even the way we find work in the first place is undergoing a rapid and inexorable sea change.

Over the last year, technology innovation has risen further into conversations about the future of work. When it comes to the ways new technology and digital adaption impact us in the workplace, it falls on both companies and candidates to decide how to take the next step.

One thing that will make any job search easier is through JobStreet.com’s Company Reviews program. It is designed to support candidates’ career journey by connecting them to the right opportunities and providing them with essential information about the companies they’re looking at. Its user-generated review-style format equips candidates with better information on companies and their respective cultures – information that has heretofore been inaccessible. Armed with Company Reviews, candidates are given insight into their options, long before they make critical decisions on the future of their careers.

“Companies and candidates’ seem to have trouble finding the right fit in one another. The company culture may not match the candidates’ career aspiration at hand. Looking at this, we realised that information gaps may prevent the right candidate from ever learning about a company’s culture that might be a right fit,” said Philip Gioca, Country Manager of JobStreet.com Philippines. “And this is where we saw an opportunity to tap into and introduced our innovative feature – Company Reviews – to help reduce the information gap and increase talent retention in the market,” Gioca added.

Since its launch in May 2016, growth in review submissions for JobStreet.com Company Reviews in the Philippines continues to be encouraging, recording an 85% increase. Candidates are now able to read reviews from past or present employees, creating transparency around important areas that will influence career choices: company culture, work-life balance and development opportunities.

Company Reviews don’t just represent a boon for candidates, but the companies themselves as well. Candidates who come in well-informed about business practices and company culture are already self-selected, making for potentially more loyal and long-lasting future employees. After all, there are few things more valuable than an employee who loves their job.

“There is no good or bad job. There are only jobs that will be aligned to candidate needs, bringing the right fit and professional fulfilment. A job can be much more than a pay cheque if you will let it be, and we believe everyone deserve to have the information they need to build a career that brings them joy and excitement, to wake up knowing that you love your job,” added Gioca.

Catering to the evolving market needs, JobStreet.com continues to innovate with integrated tools and resources, such as Company Reviews, in order to help candidates be in the know and make more informed decisions in their career journey that contribute to professional fulfilment. Are Filipinos Happy In The Workplace?

Wednesday, October 25

Are you happy in the workplace?

If your answer is NO, you share the sentiments of the majority of the 9,326 Filipino respondents in a recent survey conducted by JobStreet.com from July 31 to August 31, 2017.

What makes Filipinos unhappy?

The Boss

If you think that low basic salary is the main reason why employees are unhappy in the workplace, you are wrong. The number one factor that makes employees unhappy is the boss or the immediate superior. Bad day at work more often than not is caused by bad bosses. How many of you complain about inefficient managers? You feel like all they do are boss around and yet they lack the professional skill to manage or lead people?

When people find themselves working for bad bosses and it seems like there is no chance of change, the employees will be affected not just on the professional level but also personally. Instead of enduring the situation every day, the only solution is to quit the job.

Did you know that Filipino male employees are happier,
so are employees with male bosses?

The top 2 factor that makes employees unhappy is low basic salary while benefits and perks is on the third spot. Training opportunities, leadership team, and career development are on the bottom three.

What makes Filipinos happy?

Colleagues

Your colleagues will eventually become your friends. We spend most of our days at work and it is easier to work with people you get along well. A negative environment with co-workers hating each other is more stressful than the work load.

Many Filipinos can endure long, tiring hours at work as long as they have colleagues they could laugh with or share a meal during breaks. A happy workplace can boost an employees productivity.

Healthy relationships with colleagues make Filipinos
happy at work.

The millennials and the Gen Z are dissatisfied with basic salary while the baby boomers and the Gen X feel the need for career development and self-actualization.

Single Mom Work From Home Opportunity

Thursday, September 14

I've been advocating working from home ever since I embraced this 2008. Who wouldn't want a decent-paying job without leaving the house? This is just a dream scenario for most of us and an ideal setup for single moms who want to spend quality time with their kids while earning. Here's an inspiring story of Teacher Ruby Ann and how working from home changed her life.

Single Mom Work From Home Opportunity

Before working as an online English teacher, I worked for a Call Center company. I would always change BPO companies because of the stress and the working hours. I struggled following a set schedule, particularly the ‘graveyard’ shifts. Personally, I don’t really prefer having fixed working hours. So most of the time, after a couple of months, I would get demotivated and move to a new company.

Being a working mom with four kids is very difficult. I don’t get to see them as much as I want because of my work. When I get home, they would be in school.

A cousin of mine, who is an online English teacher of Bibo told me to try ESL teaching. Knowing my preference for a flexible schedule, she said that the job is perfect for me. Aside from that, it’s also an advantage that I know how to speak Japanese (since I lived there before) which is also where the majority of Bibo’s students are from.

When she mentioned that I can plot my own schedule, that made me decide to give it a shot. I started as a part time teacher since I was also busy managing our family business. When I became a single mom, that’s when I started teaching full time, so I can also have time to take care of them.

Starting with Bibo

I easily fell in love with working as a teacher. I really enjoy my classes, especially with my Japanese students. Most of my Japanese students are from Tokyo so it's easier for me to start a conversation and build a rapport. I lived there for a while and I’m familiar with the culture. The majority of my students are teenagers and it is very easy to relate to them and create common ground since we share a lot of common interests.

Just like other moms, I also love watching Korean drama shows which my Korean students enjoy watching too. Talking about it makes me feel like I’m not working.

Time and Flexibility

What I love the most about my job is the fact that I can work anytime I want, and I always get booked every time I open my classes. Even if students cancel 30 mins before the class, it will still get booked right away.

After getting familiarized with the teaching process and the learning materials. I realized that working as an online English teacher can be easy. My preparations for classes are very minimal. You just need to be attentive to your students to know what they need and what kind of atmosphere will work with them. Some students prefer a more serious class, other students prefer a more interactive and lively atmosphere.

This is something that you can learn from experience. It is important that you know their preference. I also make mistakes - it is important to learn from them and remember that this is work and you have to be professional.

Financial growth and independence

Personally, the financial capacity and liberty that this job has brought me is very important. I feel more confident to move knowing I have a reliable source of income. When Bibo became a constant thing for me, that’s when I decided that I can be a single mom and that me and my kids will be alright. Before, I was very scared.

Being able to send my kids to a private school is my biggest achievement and investment. As a single mom, doing so is not very easy. I am not very materialistic. I value education above all, because I want them to study and and have a better future.

Who Can Work as an Online English Teacher?

Home-based online English teaching is perfect for single moms like me. You can work as a part-timer and earn extra income, or you can do full time if you want to balance your time in taking care of your kids while working.

I am glad that I have grabbed this opportunity. If ever you will ask me if until when will I be work for Bibo Global Opportunity, I will say, “Forever.” This has been the easiest, convenient and fulfilling job I’ve ever had. Working here taught me the importance of time management and Work-Life Balance. Life is not just about money and career, it’s also witnessing your loved ones’ milestones to celebrate it with them. I am glad that I am working smart.

51Talk Revolutionizes Online English Education from the Philippines to China

Wednesday, August 3

51Talk

In the dynamic landscape of online education, 51Talk has emerged as a trailblazer, earning the distinction of being the largest online teaching company globally. Let us explore the journey of 51Talk, from its initial foray into the Chinese market to its groundbreaking listing on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in 2016.

A Pioneering Venture in Online Education

Founded in 2011 to address the increasing demand for English teachers in China, 51Talk has revolutionized online English education. The company's inception was fueled by the recognition that despite years of formal English education in China, many individuals still struggled to communicate confidently in English. Co-founder Sue Ting's expertise in linguistics and second language acquisition guided the company's approach toward one-on-one lessons, leading her to the Philippines in search of proficient English teachers.

The Filipino Advantage

The Philippines, recognized as the global hub for back office process outsourcing and call centers, became the ideal breeding ground for 51Talk's teaching talent. Filipino teachers, with their exceptional English proficiency and cultural familiarity with the West, quickly became the backbone of 51Talk's success. With over 8,000 teachers from various cities in the Philippines, the company tapped into the nation's passionate and dedicated educators.

IPO Milestone and Future Vision

In June 2016, 51Talk achieved a significant milestone by becoming the only online education company listed on the NYSE under the stock symbol COE. The funds raised through the IPO have empowered 51Talk to expand its pool of passionate English teachers. Sue Ting expressed the company's commitment to engaging local teachers, enhancing brand visibility, and providing continuous training and development programs for their educators.

Innovative Teaching Model

The success of 51Talk lies in its innovative teaching model, combining technology and ability. The company developed its own online learning system and platform, enabling Filipino teachers to deliver intensive one-on-one English-only immersive lessons to Chinese students. This approach allows for daily lessons, anytime and anywhere, providing students with a convenient and effective means to practice English in a real conversational environment.

Empowering Lifestyle Changes for Teachers

Beyond its impact on students, 51Talk has transformed the lives of its online English teachers. The unique teaching platform allows educators to work from the comfort of their homes, choose flexible schedules, and engage in continuous training. This not only ensures a high standard of teaching but also enables teachers to enjoy positive lifestyle changes, with more time for family and a flexible work schedule that eliminates commuting and graveyard shifts.

As 51Talk continues to lead the online English education industry, its commitment to innovation, combined with the dedication of Filipino teachers, remains at the forefront. The company's journey from addressing a specific need in China to becoming a global educational powerhouse reflects the transformative impact of online education facilitated by technology and the passion of educators.
