Wednesday, April 22, 2026

Filipino food entrepreneurs continue to prove their strength and creativity as the 2026 National Food Fair wrapped up with impressive results. Organized by the Department of Trade and Industry, this year’s event generated over ₱125 million in total sales, highlighting the growing demand for proudly local products.

More than just a marketplace, the fair served as a powerful platform connecting micro, small, and medium enterprises with bigger opportunities both locally and globally.

A Strong Showcase of Filipino Food Innovation

Held from April 8 to 12, 2026 at SM Megamall, the five-day event brought together over 300 exhibitors from across the country.

From regional delicacies to modern food innovations, the fair created a dynamic space where MSMEs could directly engage with buyers, retailers, and everyday consumers. It was designed not just for selling, but for building meaningful business connections that go beyond the event itself.

Supporting MSMEs Beyond Short-Term Gains

According to Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina A. Roque, the initiative is part of a broader effort to help Filipino businesses grow sustainably under the Bagong Pilipinas agenda.

In her address, she emphasized that the goal is not just to provide immediate support, but to help MSMEs become more efficient and innovative over time. She reassured entrepreneurs that the government is focused on helping them thrive even in uncertain conditions.

Key Trends Shaping the Food Industry

This year’s fair also highlighted emerging trends that are shaping the future of the Philippine food sector.

DTI Assistant Secretary Nylah Rizza Bautista pointed out three major areas of focus:
  • Coconut-based products as a growing export category
  • Halal-certified goods to tap into global markets
  • Former overseas Filipino workers transitioning into entrepreneurship

These themes reflect how local businesses are evolving to meet both domestic and international demand.

Strengthening the Link Between Farmers and Businesses

Agriculture also played a key role in the conversation. Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. highlighted the importance of supporting farmers alongside MSMEs.

He noted that improving access to markets and resources for food producers is essential in building a more resilient and competitive industry. Strengthening this connection ensures that growth benefits both producers and entrepreneurs.

Expanding Opportunities Through Halal and Global Markets

One of the standout focuses this year was the halal market, which continues to grow worldwide. The fair emphasized the importance of certification and maintaining high standards to help Filipino products compete internationally.

For many MSMEs, this opens doors to new export opportunities, especially in regions where halal products are in high demand.

Building Long-Term Business Connections

Beyond retail sales, the event also introduced initiatives like the Business Connect Lounge. This space allowed MSMEs to meet institutional buyers and explore partnerships that extend well beyond the five-day fair.

These connections are crucial in helping small businesses scale and sustain growth in the long run.

A Promising Future for Filipino Food Entrepreneurs

The success of the 2026 National Food Fair is a clear sign that Filipino food businesses are not just surviving, they are evolving and expanding.

With strong government support, growing global interest, and the creativity of local entrepreneurs, the future looks promising for the country’s food industry. If anything, this event proves that investing in local brands is more important than ever.
