Commuters can expect a smoother ticket-buying experience soon as AF Payments Inc. (AFPI), the company behind the beep™ card and the Automated Fare Collection System, has started upgrading its Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) in LRT1, LRT2, and MRT3 to recognize the new five peso coins released by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) late last year.
Calibration Underway in Germany
The calibration process is currently being handled in Germany, where AFPI’s partner and global leader in vending machine coin acceptor technology is based. This ensures that the sensitive system upgrade is done with the highest level of precision and reliability.
“With commuter protection and operator efficiency in mind, AFPI only works with experienced and reputable suppliers to handle this kind of critical system update,” said Agnes Padilla, AFPI spokesperson.
March Rollout Expected
Barring any unforeseen delays, the updated machines will be ready to accept the new BSP five peso coins by March across all LRT1, LRT2, and MRT3 stations.
Tips for Commuters in the Meantime
While the updates are ongoing, AFPI reminds commuters to:
- Double-check their five peso coins before inserting them into TVMs
- Use Single Journey Tickets as an alternative
- Exchange new coins for old ones at station teller booths if needed
Additionally, passengers are encouraged to take advantage of the convenience of the beep™ card, which can be purchased and reloaded not only at train stations but also at partner outlets such as SM Bill Pay, Robinsons Business Center, and Bayad Center branches.
A Step Toward Seamless Commuting
The adjustment is part of AFPI’s ongoing effort to provide reliable and commuter-friendly services in Metro Manila’s elevated rail systems. By ensuring that new BSP-issued coins work seamlessly with TVMs, the company reinforces its commitment to efficient, cashless, and hassle-free travel experiences for the riding public.
