This is the first time in the 40-year history of Ginebra San Miguel that the "Never Say Die" is featured in the team jersey. Barangay Ginebra is synonymous with the never say die spirit that has become the mantra of the team and the entire barangay.
The 40th anniversary jersey features the Living Legend and father of Never Say Die spirit Robert Jaworski Sr.(7), the unforgettable "The Fast and the Furious" duo Mark Caguioa (47) and Jayjay Helterbrand (13), fast-rising basketball superstar Scottie Thompson (6), and the most beloved PBA import who has won the hearts of Pinoy basketball fans Justin Brownlee (32).
The limited edition Barangay Ginebra jersey will be worn by the team in the upcoming 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup.
The Never Say Die Spirit
Every Barangay Ginebra fan knows how the Never Say Die spirit was born.
Flashback to October 22, 1985. During a Barangay Ginebra match against Northern Consolidated Cement (NCC), Robert Jaworski Sr. was hit by a wayward elbow in the 2nd quarter. The Big J had to be rushed to the hospital. Unexpectedly and to everyone's disbelief, he returned to the arena in the 3rd quarter with seven stitches on his lip.
In the 4th quarter, the team was behind by 15 points going into the final seven minutes of the game when Jaworski re-entered the game and led the team to victory, 99-96. This was the beginning of the Never Say Die mantra.
The legacy lives on
It's always a sold out game whenever the Barangay Ginebra has a match. Even though Jaworski no longer play with the team, the Never Say Die spirit stayed.
"The Fast and the Furious" duo of Mark "The Spark" Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand showed resilience and determination when they fought hard to end the team's seven-year drought in the 2004-2005 season to win the PBA Fiesta Conference. They also turned this victory into a back-to-back win when they claimed the Philippine Cup Conference.
Scottie Thompson is also making history for the Barangay Ginebra. He has recorded his third triple double and has won the 2018 PBA Commissioner's Cup Finals MVP. He brings his best in every game, fighting for every rebound, taking the shots, and giving tough defense.
Beloved PBA import Justin Brownlee is another player who gives his all in every match. His buzzer beater 3-point shot has won the team the 2016 Governor's Cup, the Gin Kings first after eight years. It was a comeback from a 15-point deficit at the half which truly exemplified the Never Say Die spirit. Brownlee returned the following season and helped the Barangay Ginebra defend the Governor's Cup. The match was held at the Philippine Arena with a PBA record crowd attendance of 54,068.
