Too Good To Be True? BDO Foundation and SEC Join Forces to Help Filipinos Spot Investment Scams

Friday, May 23, 2025

Ever come across a too-good-to-be-true investment pitch that promises to double your money in no time? You’re not alone—and chances are, it's a scam.

As financial scams grow more sophisticated, it’s getting harder to distinguish between legit opportunities and shady deals. But the good news? Help is here.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and BDO Foundation have teamed up to launch an advocacy campaign that helps Filipinos become smarter, more vigilant investors. Through a pair of short yet powerful videos, they’re showing everyday Pinoys how to spot red flags and avoid falling into the trap of investment scams in the Philippines.

Must-Watch: “Check with SEC” and “Legit Investments? It’s a Date”

These two newly released videos are not just informative—they’re downright entertaining.

The first one, “Check with SEC,” uses music and catchy visuals to spotlight common scam tactics. Think promises of “double your money” returns, pressure to recruit others for bonuses, or being asked to deposit funds in someone’s personal bank account.  Red flag alert!

The message is clear: Always verify before you invest. The SEC is your go-to resource to confirm if a company or individual is authorized to offer investment products.

Before You Invest, Investigate

The second video, “Legit Investments? It’s a Date,” takes a fun and relatable approach. It follows Aldea, a curious and cautious investor, as she navigates three different investment options. Her secret weapon? Asking the right questions, doing her research, and knowing the key documents to request.

Here’s a golden takeaway from the video:

Just because a company is SEC-registered doesn’t mean it’s licensed to sell securities. Watch out for these important documents:
  • Permit to sell or offer securities
  • Order of registration
  • Prospectus
  • Salesman certificate

Where to Watch and Learn

The videos are now available on the SEC’s official Facebook page and will soon be rolled out on other digital platforms, as well as the BDO Foundation YouTube playlist. These will also be featured in on-ground campaigns and training sessions across the country.

Why It Matters

According to BDO Foundation President Mario Deriquito, “This shared project not only helps prevent Filipinos from falling victim to investment scams, but also builds and restores confidence in legitimate investment opportunities.”

As a long-time advocate of financial education, BDO Foundation believes that empowering Filipinos with knowledge is the best defense against fraud.

Final Tip: Think Twice, Check with SEC

Before putting your hard-earned money into anything that sounds promising, ask, research, and verify. When in doubt, don’t just trust—Check with SEC.

Because when it comes to your future, being informed isn’t just smart—it’s essential.
