Swan Lake Shines in Ballet Manila’s Pearl Year with International Ballet Stars Katherine Barkman and Esteban Hernández

Wednesday, May 21

As Ballet Manila celebrates its Pearl Anniversary, the spotlight turns to the timeless classic Swan Lake—reimagined with international flair and emotional depth. Leading the production is Katherine Barkman, First Soloist of the San Francisco Ballet, returning to her roots to perform the iconic dual role of Odette/Odile. Dancing opposite her is Esteban Hernández, principal dancer of the San Francisco Ballet and a global sensation known for his captivating artistry and precision.

A Dazzling Homecoming for Katherine Barkman

For Barkman, this isn't just another performance—it's a deeply personal homecoming. A former principal dancer of Ballet Manila, she trained under Lisa Macuja Elizalde, the company’s CEO and artistic director, before making waves in the U.S. ballet scene. Now, with years of international experience, she returns to the stage that shaped her, bringing new layers of artistry and confidence to the challenging role. “With experience comes more fearlessness,” says Barkman. “I take more risks—I would rather my dancing be exciting to watch than safe and predictable.”

Her portrayal of both the gentle Odette and the cunning Odile showcases not only technical brilliance but also a maturity in interpretation that comes from years of dancing on the world stage.

Esteban Hernández: From Don Quixote to Swan Lake

Fresh off a breathtaking performance as Basilio in Don Quixote last year, Esteban Hernández returns to Manila to take on the role of Prince Siegfried. Originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, Esteban trained at The Royal Ballet School and rose to fame through his work with the San Francisco Ballet.

“Esteban is the complete package,” shares Macuja Elizalde. “His depth of experience, technique, and artistry will shine through in Siegfried’s noble and elegant character.”

Having previously performed Swan Lake together, Katherine and Esteban bring a chemistry that promises to enthrall audiences.

“Esteban is an amazing partner,” adds Barkman. “Dancing with someone who both challenges and supports you is rare, and I’m thrilled we get to share this production at Ballet Manila.”

A Vaganova Masterclass: Ballet Manila’s Swan Corps and Technical Prowess

Lisa Macuja Elizalde, a celebrated prima ballerina who has herself danced the role of Odette/Odile, emphasizes the technical demands of Swan Lake and Ballet Manila’s edge through its Vaganova training.

“Our dancers’ strength, posture, and coordination come from daily immersion in the Vaganova method. This allows the corps de ballet to move as one—creating the magic of the swan scenes.”

Double Cast, Double the Magic

In addition to the powerhouse pairing of Barkman and Hernández, audiences will also be treated to another interpretation of the beloved ballet. Abigail Oliveiro, Ballet Manila principal dancer, will take on the Odette/Odile role alongside Nathaniel Remez, a company artist from San Francisco Ballet.

“Abi will grow so much from partnering with Nathaniel,” says Macuja Elizalde. “His presence and height are a perfect match for her, and their dynamic will bring a fresh perspective to the performance.”
