Ballet Manila’s Don Quixote: A Dazzling Celebration of Dance and Passion with Mariinsky Ballet Stars Renata Shakirova and Kimin Kim

Sunday, August 24

There’s something magical about stepping inside Aliw Theater again—the dimming of the lights, the hushed anticipation of the crowd, and that unmistakable thrill of knowing you’re about to witness art come alive. I had the privilege of watching Ballet Manila’s production of Don Quixote on it's 2nd night of showing and it was nothing short of spectacular.

This grand finale to conclude the Pearl Year became even more special with the presence of Mariinsky Ballet principal dancers Renata Shakirova and Kimin Kim, who took on the lead roles of Kitri and Basilio. Having world-renowned ballet stars perform alongside Ballet Manila’s homegrown talents was truly a gift to Filipino audiences.

The Leads: Renata and Kimin’s Breathtaking Chemistry

Renata Shakirova’s Kitri was captivating, playful, radiant, and flawless. Her fiery spirit and dazzling turns brought Kitri’s character to life in a way that had the audience cheering throughout.

Opposite her, Kimin Kim delivered an unforgettable Basilio. Known for his incredible elevation and effortless technique, Kimin wowed us with soaring jumps and precise spins that seemed to defy gravity. Together, their chemistry was magnetic with every playful glance, every perfectly timed lift, and every dramatic moment drew us deeper into the story.

A Company That Shines

While the international stars drew the spotlight, Ballet Manila’s own dancers made sure the stage was brimming with energy and heart. From the lively tavern scenes to the enchanting dream sequence, the ensemble delivered performances that were both vibrant and polished. The comedic duo of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza also brought plenty of laughter, balancing the fiery romance with lighthearted charm.

A Feast for the Eyes

The production itself was a visual delight. Bold Spanish-inspired costumes, dynamic choreography, and dramatic lighting turned Aliw Theater into a portal to another world. It was proof that storytelling through dance doesn’t always need opulence. Sometimes it’s the passion and artistry of the performers that make the magic.

Ballet Manila’s Signature Touch

Under the artistic direction of Lisa Macuja-Elizalde, Ballet Manila continues to uphold its reputation as a premier ballet company that balances classical tradition with Filipino artistry. Hosting stars like Shakirova and Kim only highlights their commitment to giving local audiences access to world-class performances.

Final Thoughts: A World-Class Experience in Manila

As the curtain fell to an outpouring of applause, I felt nothing but gratitude for being able to witness such artistry right here in Manila. Don Quixote wasn’t just a performance, it was a cultural celebration and a rare chance to see Mariinsky Ballet’s finest share the stage with Ballet Manila’s best. I just don't want the night  to end.
