Renata Shakirova and Kimin Kim Bring World-Class Artistry to Ballet Manila’s Don Quixote

Tuesday, August 19

Ballet lovers are in for a treat this August as international ballet superstars Renata Shakirova and Kimin Kim bring their unmatched artistry to the Philippine stage. Set to headline Ballet Manila’s season finale of Don Quixote at the Aliw Theater, the Mariinsky Ballet principal dancers promise to deliver a performance filled with fire, precision, and passion.

World-Class Dancers, Fresh Interpretations

Performing Don Quixote from August 22 to 24, Renata and Kimin will once again take on the beloved roles of Kitri and Basilio—characters they’ve danced countless times in their careers. Yet, they insist that no two performances are ever the same.

Renata, who has performed Kitri more than any other role in her repertoire, shared that the secret lies in treating each show like a debut. “I prepare for the performance like it’s my first time so that everything stays alive and authentic,” she explained. “Every detail matters, especially in the way we connect as partners.”

Kimin, on the other hand, describes Basilio as “the color red that shimmers”—a role bursting with energy and personality. He credits his Mariinsky training for giving him the foundation to combine powerful technique with emotional expression. “Schooling is still the most important. Technique and artistry must always come together to give the audience not just steps, but a message they can take home.”

A Partnership of Passion and Precision

Both dancers agree that their chemistry on stage keeps the performance exciting. Renata praised Kimin’s attention to detail, while Kimin admired Renata’s ability to surprise him with fresh nuances in every show.

“Even if we’ve danced the same ballet a hundred times, there are always a hundred different versions of Renata’s performance,” Kimin shared. “That keeps me inspired and never bored.”

Returning to Manila’s Stage

This performance holds special meaning for both artists. Renata, who captivated Filipino audiences last year with her role as Giselle, is thrilled to return—this time with a brighter, more joyful character.

“Giselle was dramatic and heavy, but Kitri in Don Quixote is very happy and vibrant. I want to show this different side of me,” she said.

For Kimin, this will be his first time performing in Manila, and he hopes audiences will carry the experience beyond the theater doors. “I want people not just to clap and cheer but to bring home a memory and emotion they’ll never forget.”

A Fitting Finale to Ballet Manila’s Pearl Year

Lisa Macuja Elizalde, Ballet Manila’s CEO and artistic director, expressed her excitement about closing the season with such world-class talent:

“It’s only fitting to end our Pearl Year with Renata and Kimin leading Don Quixote. Their artistry is exactly what Ballet Manila stands for—bringing world-class performances to Filipino audiences.”
