Roblox Launches Age-Based Kids and Select Accounts Worldwide With Stronger Safety Controls

Wednesday, June 17, 2026

As more children spend time gaming, parents are increasingly looking for ways to ensure online experiences remain safe, age-appropriate, and easy to manage. Roblox is taking a major step in that direction with the global rollout of its new Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts, introducing age-based experiences designed to evolve alongside young users.

The update, which officially launches worldwide on June 17, 2026, gives families more control over how children interact with games, chat features, and online communities while helping kids gradually gain digital independence as they grow.

Roblox Introduces Age-Based Accounts for Younger Players

The newly launched Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts automatically place users into the appropriate account category based on their age.

The move follows initial launches in Australia, Indonesia, the Netherlands, and New Zealand and is now available globally, including in the Philippines.

Under the new system, younger users can still access thousands of games across the platform while benefiting from additional safety reviews and stricter content controls. Popular experiences available in some regions include titles such as Driving Empire, Grow a Garden, and How to Train Your Dragon.

According to Roblox, the goal is to create an experience that grows with children while maintaining strong safeguards and parental oversight.

How Roblox Kids and Roblox Select Accounts Work

The platform now offers three primary account experiences based on age and verification status.

Roblox Kids

Designed for younger children, Roblox Kids accounts come with the platform's strictest default settings.

Key features include:

  • Chat disabled by default
  • Additional game review requirements
  • Strong parental controls
  • Access to age-appropriate games only

Parents of children aged 5 to 8 can choose to enable limited text chat through parental controls. If activated, communication is restricted to users within similar age groups or Trusted Friends.

Roblox Select

Roblox Select accounts are intended for older children and younger teens.

These accounts allow access to a broader selection of age-appropriate content while gradually unlocking communication features based on age and account verification.

Parents can continue managing chat settings and game access until their child reaches age 16.

Roblox Accounts for Ages 16 and Older

Users aged 16 and above can access the full Roblox experience after completing an age verification process.

Verification can be completed through government-issued ID checks or secure facial age estimation technology.

New Chat Rules Aim to Improve Online Safety

One of the biggest changes involves chat access across the platform.

Under the new policy, users who have not completed age verification cannot use chat features, regardless of their self-declared age.

The updated chat framework works as follows:

Roblox says chat interactions remain protected through text filtering, message rephrasing systems, and ongoing monitoring designed to detect harmful behavior and child exploitation risks.

Users can communicate only with similar age groups or Trusted Friends where available.

Additional Reviews for Games Available to Children

The company is also strengthening requirements for developers who want their games included in Roblox Kids and Roblox Select catalogs.

Developers must:

  • Complete identity verification
  • Enable two-factor authentication
  • Purchase a Roblox subscription or pay a refundable publishing fee

Games also undergo additional evaluations before becoming accessible to younger audiences.

Roblox reviews gameplay experiences, analyzes user reports, and checks content maturity labels to ensure games meet platform standards.

Experiences featuring social hangouts, free-form drawing tools, or sensitive topics are excluded from Kids and Select account catalogs.

Additionally, Roblox Moments, a feature that allows players to share gameplay clips, will not be available for Roblox Kids or Roblox Select users at launch.

Social Media Sharing Restrictions Expanded

Roblox is also tightening controls around social media visibility.

Previously, social media links were not allowed within chat. Under the new policy, social media links can only be viewed or shared by age-verified users aged 16 and older.

The restriction applies across:

  • User profiles
  • Game detail pages
  • Community pages
  • Creator Hub pages

The update is designed to reduce unwanted interactions and help younger users remain within safer, age-appropriate environments.

Parents Gain More Tools to Manage Children's Experiences

A major focus of the new rollout is giving parents more visibility and control over their children's online activity.

Parents who link their accounts to their child's Roblox profile can access a wide range of management tools.

For children under 13, parents can:

  • View friend lists
  • Block or report users
  • Approve Trusted Friend requests
  • Set spending limits
  • Set screen-time limits

Until age 16, parents can also:

  • Manage chat settings
  • Allow or block specific games

For teens aged 16 to 18, parental controls become less restrictive but still provide valuable visibility into screen time, spending activity, and social connections.

Roblox Emphasizes Parent Involvement

Alongside new account protections, Roblox continues to encourage active parent participation in children's digital lives.

Dr. Anuradha Rao, a member of Roblox's Global Parent Council, highlighted the value of combining technology safeguards with open family communication.

"The new accounts offer additional opportunities for parental involvement and oversight, shared experiences, and access to resources for online safety. When combined with active parenting and open communication, these features can help families develop healthy technology habits at home and foster more positive online interactions."

She added that tools that make it easier for parents to stay involved are especially important as children navigate increasingly digital lifestyles.

A New Approach to Growing Up Online

With the global launch of Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts, Roblox is introducing a more structured approach to online gaming that adapts to different stages of childhood and adolescence.

By combining age-based access, stronger safety protections, enhanced parental controls, and stricter content reviews, the platform aims to balance digital freedom with responsible oversight.

For parents seeking greater confidence in their child's online gaming experience, these new tools offer more transparency and control while allowing kids to enjoy the creativity, social interaction, and entertainment that have made Roblox one of the world's most popular gaming platforms.
