Taking the train just became more convenient for thousands of daily commuters. If you've ever found yourself scrambling to reload a transit card before boarding, there's good news. LRT-2 has introduced a new cashless fare payment system that lets passengers pay using their everyday debit or credit cards, NFC-enabled mobile wallets, or GCash QR.
The initiative marks a significant milestone in the Philippines' public transportation modernization efforts, making LRT-2 the country's first railway line to offer an interoperable automated fare collection system that supports multiple digital payment methods in one platform.
LRT-2 Introduces a More Convenient Way to Pay for Train Fares
Commuters riding the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) can now simply tap their Visa or Mastercard debit, credit, or prepaid cards at fare gates. Those using Near Field Communication (NFC)-enabled mobile wallets such as Google Pay can also tap their smartphones, while GCash users have the option to scan a QR code to complete their fare payment.
The upgraded payment system was launched through a partnership between Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC), Visa, the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), and the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
By eliminating the need for a dedicated transit card, the new system gives commuters greater flexibility while making daily travel quicker and more seamless.
A Bank-Agnostic System Designed for Everyday Commuters
One of the standout features of the new fare collection system is its open-loop EMV payment technology, which allows passengers to use eligible payment cards issued by participating banks, electronic money issuers, and fintech providers.
Unlike traditional closed-loop transit cards that require separate loading and maintenance, the new platform is designed to work with payment methods that many commuters already carry every day.
This approach not only reduces the hassle of topping up a separate card but also aligns the Philippines with digital transit systems already used in many major cities around the world.
According to RCBC President and CEO Reggie Cariaso, the project reflects the bank's commitment to supporting the country's digital transformation.
"We are grateful for the trust and partnership of the DOTr and LRTA as we continue building accessible and future-ready digital ecosystems for Filipinos. Beyond banking, we see digital finance as an enabler of more connected, seamless, and efficient daily experiences."
RCBC Launches the PISO Fare Cashback Promo
To encourage commuters to experience the new payment system, RCBC is rolling out its PISO Fare Cashback Promo from July 13 to July 31.
The promotion is available exclusively to RCBC Debit Card, RCBC Credit Card, and MySSS RCBC DiskarTech Debit Card holders, allowing eligible cardholders to enjoy fare cashback while using the newly launched cashless payment system on LRT-2.
The promo offers commuters an opportunity to experience the convenience of tapping their bank cards while enjoying added savings during the promotional period.
Supporting Smarter Public Transportation in the Philippines
Transportation officials expect the upgraded fare collection system to improve the commuting experience for the more than 58.7 million passengers who ride LRT-2 annually.
Beyond faster transactions at station gates, the project also supports the government's broader efforts to modernize public transportation and promote wider adoption of digital payments across the country.
For RCBC Executive Vice President and Chief Innovations and Inclusion Officer Lito Villanueva, the launch represents an important step toward bringing Philippine public transport in line with global standards.
"This is a defining milestone in the modernization of Philippine public transportation. For the first time, commuters can seamlessly use their everyday bank cards, mobile NFC wallets, and QR payments in one interoperable transit ecosystem. By making commuting simpler, faster, and more inclusive, we are accelerating digital adoption, advancing financial inclusion, and bringing the Philippines closer to the digital transport systems found in leading global cities."
Meanwhile, Visa Philippines Country Manager Jeffrey Navarro noted that the LRT-2 implementation is the company's fifth transit payment project in the country, following similar initiatives on MRT-3 and bus systems in Cebu, Mandaue, and Bacolod.
"Through our partnership with RCBC and the Philippine government, we are helping expand access to secure and interoperable digital payments that improve commuter convenience, urban mobility, and economic productivity."
RCBC Credit Cards President and CEO Arniel Vincent Ong also highlighted how cashless payments are becoming part of everyday life.
"As more Filipinos embrace cashless lifestyles, initiatives like this make digital payments even more practical for daily commuting. We are proud to help deliver secure, convenient, and interoperable payment solutions that benefit millions of commuters."
A Step Toward a More Connected Commuting Experience
As digital payments continue to become part of everyday routines, innovations like the new LRT-2 cashless fare payment system make public transportation more accessible and convenient for millions of Filipinos.
Whether you're commuting to work, heading to school, or exploring Metro Manila, being able to pay with your existing bank card, mobile wallet, or GCash QR removes another layer of hassle from your daily journey. Combined with initiatives like RCBC's PISO Fare Cashback Promo, the rollout signals another step toward a faster, smarter, and more connected commuting experience.
