Watson Glutathione

GLUTATHIONE has become very popular because it was mainly marketed  at first for its whitening benefit. Brown skinned are willing to shell out large amount of money to achieve a glowing, fair skin. I used to buy expensive glutathione capsules. Not because I desire a fair skin. My endocrinologist prescribed it to address my health concerns. When I learned about Watsons Generics, I got excited when I found out that a capsule only costs P33 (US$0.76). So I switched from the expensive brand  to the Watsons brand.

But did you know that taking glutathione has more benefits than just vanity.

Glutathione is a substance that is produced naturally by our liver. You can also find it in fruits, vegetables, and meats.

People take glutathione by mouth for treating cataracts and glaucoma, preventing aging, treating or preventing alcoholism, asthma, cancer, heart disease (atherosclerosis and high cholesterol), hepatitis, liver disease, diseases that weaken the body’s defense system (including AIDS and chronic fatigue syndrome), memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease, osteoarthritis, and Parkinson’s disease. Glutathione is also used for maintaining the body’s defense system (immune system) and fighting metal and drug poisoning.

Glutathione benefits

  • anti-aging
  • treating or prevention of alcoholism, hepatitis and liver disease
  • chronic fatigue symptoms
  • memory loss and Alzheimer's disease
  • helps in maintaining a healthy immune system
  • male infertility
  • prevention of poisonous side effects of cancer treatment (chemotherapy)

Healthcare providers also give glutathione intravenously (by injection into the vein, by IV) for preventing “tired blood” (anemia) in kidney patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment, preventing kidney problems after heart bypass surgery, treating Parkinson’s disease, improving blood flow and decreasing clotting in individuals with “hardening of the arteries” (atherosclerosis), treating diabetes, and preventing toxic side effects of chemotherapy.  (http://www.webmd.com/)

Aside from Glutathione, the Watsons brand that I am taking contains Milk Thistle and Alpha Lipoic Acid.

I only learned about milk thistle when my mom's oncologist prescribed it as supplement during her chemotherapy for metastatic liver cancer (she had breast cancer 8 years prior to liver cancer diagnosis).

Milk thistle is a plant. The above ground parts and seeds are used to make medicine. The seeds are more commonly used.

Milk thistle is used most often for liver disorders, including liver damage caused by chemicals, Amanita phalloides mushroom poisoning, jaundice, chronic inflammatory liver disease, cirrhosis of the liver, and chronic hepatitis. Nevertheless, researchers have not yet concluded with certainty that milk thistle is effective for any of these uses.

Milk thistle is also used for loss of appetite, heartburn (dyspepsia), and gallbladder complaints.

Some people use milk thistle for diabetes, hangover, diseases of the spleen, prostate cancer, malaria, depression, uterine complaints, increasing breast milk flow, allergy symptoms, and starting menstrual flow. (http://www.webmd.com/)

Alpha-lipoic acid is a vitamin-like chemical called an antioxidant. Yeast, liver, kidney, spinach, broccoli, and potatoes are good sources of alpha-lipoic acid. It is also made in the laboratory for use as medicine.

Alpha-lipoic acid is used for diabetes and nerve-related symptoms of diabetes including burning, pain, and numbness in the legs and arms. High doses of alpha-lipoic acid are approved in Germany for the treatment of these symptoms.

Some people use alpha-lipoic acid for memory loss, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), HIV/AIDS, cancer, liver disease, diseases of the heart and blood vessels (including a disorder called cardiac autonomic neuropathy) and Lyme disease.

Alpha-lipoic acid is also used to treat eye-related disorders, such as damage to the retina, cataracts, glaucoma, and an eye disease called Wilson’s disease. (http://www.webmd.com/)

What I Like About Watsons Glutathione

It contains 500 mg of glutathione. Other brands are more expensive and usually contain only 250 mg of glutathione so you better check that out before buying.
