Marikina Sports Park: A Landmark in Marikina

2/5/15

I almost thought I won't be having any entry to the "landmark" photo challenge of Sony Xperia Photography-Philippines. After my tennis session last night at the Marikina Sports Park, a light bulb moment hit me. Marikina Sports Park is a landmark! Nobody was running at the oval because it is undergoing repair and maintenance. I was lucky to snap an empty running haven.

Marikina Sports Park (also know as Marikina Sports Complex) was built in 1969 and was publicized as the first of its kind in Asia. The construction of the sports complex was made possible by the Provincial Government of Rizal under the leadership of Governor Isidro Rodriguez Sr thus was called Rodriguez Sports Center back then.

I remember there was a time that the Marikina Sports Park was almost abandoned and the facilities were rotting. It was only during the leadership of our beloved former Mayor Bayani Fernando that Marikina Sports Park was rehabilitated. The three hectare land owned by Marikina was officially turned over to Mayor Fernando in 1995. It was fully refurbished during the time of Mayor Marides Fernando in 2001.

Since then, Marikenyos and those living nearby regularly go to Marikina Sports Park for their fitness regimen. Zumba has become very popular and hundreds attend every day. There is also a state of the art gym located on the 4th floor for only P60. The swimming pool is a big hit especially during summer. Sports clinic are also conducted here.

Whether you are into basketball, volleyball, martial arts, dancing, swimming, sepak takraw or running... Marikina Sports Park has something for you.

As for me and hubby, we are into tennis.

Marikina Sports Center is located along Sumulong Highway Brgy Sto. Nino Marikina City. Dr. Angelito Llabres is the present administrator.
