Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI), a non-profit organization that focuses on upholding the dignity of man by working with communities to elevate their social, physical, and economic well-being in the Philippines, officially launches the second year of its virtual run initiative called Run2Plant: Para sa Greener Pinas under its One To Tree (OTT) program.

Co-presented by Pinoy Fitness and Anytime Fitness, Run2Plant provides Filipinos a new way to run that is not only accessible and enjoyable but also environmentally impactful, especially in celebration of Philippine Environment Month this June. With every registration, RAFI pledges to plant 1 to 3 trees, depending on the participant’s chosen run package.

With the goal of promoting a “Greener Pinas,” funds raised from the virtual run will be used for reforestation projects with the aim of planting 6,000 native trees in Batangas, increasing forest cover, and alleviating the immense effects of climate change.

Last year’s Run2Plant had 700 participants from different parts of the country. In partnership with the Bagacay Tree Growers Association, runners contributed to adopting 1,450 native trees in Borbon, Cebu, yielding a total of 9,900 kilograms of potential carbon sequestered per year.

Under Armour successfully holds the first UA COMBINE in the Philippines

Tuesday, November 21

The fitness competition made its debut in Manila with 249 participants pushing their limits and benchmark their performance.

Under Armour marked an important milestone in the Philippines with the launch of the UA COMBINE on November 19, 2023, at the SM Megamall Megatrade Hall. Here, Tess Jones (Women’s Competition) and Ryant Erwin Relos (Men’s Competition) also made history as the country’s first-ever champions.

The region’s largest fitness competition held its debut in the country following its inauguration in 2022, which saw 1,200 participants take part in the competitions held across four countries: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Australia.

UA COMBINE aims to establish the ultimate athlete performance benchmark and challenge participants to push their limits. Over 249 Filipino athletes from diverse sports and training disciplines competed for a shot at the total cash prize pool of Php 680,000. They challenged their skills across eight stages that tested their agility, stamina, vertical, power, endurance, strength, speed, and cognition while wearing Under Armour gear, proving that Under Armour performance gear is what helps them excel and perform at a high level.

Pushing boundaries

Athletes competed individually or in groups to test their limits in a series of physical and mental tests developed by Michael Watts, Under Armour’s global head of athlete performance.

These tests focused on:

AGILITY: Agility Star Drill
STAMINA: Pull-up Beep Test
VERTICAL: Vertical Jump Test
POWER: 20m Sled Push
ENDURANCE: 20m Beep Test
STRENGTH: 3RM Bench Press
SPEED: 40 Yard Dash
COGNITION: Reactive Intelligence Wall

The Philippines’ first-ever UA COMBINE saw significant changes to the tests as part of Under Armour’s ongoing efforts to define athletic performance better.

Last year’s Sargent jump test was replaced by the standing vertical leap test, which assessed competitors while they utilized force plates. This accurately measures an individual’s upward propulsion force.

The cognition test uses the same Reactive Intelligence Wall used by athletes in Formula 1 and the National Basketball Association or NBA. In this station, six light pods are positioned on a vertical wall. Competitors must tap out as many blue pods as possible in 30 seconds, measuring reaction time, decision-making, and attention skills.

Points were awarded for each completed test, and athletes were ranked according to their final results.

Medals and cash prizes of Php 200,000, Php 100,000, and Php 40,000 were awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place athletes in both the men’s and women’s divisions. The highest team score brought home Php 80,000 worth of Under Armour gear.

Washington Sycip Park

From dancing to dojo and everything in between, It All Happens in Makati

As a city in perpetual motion, Makati isn’t Makati without the endless stream of buses, cars, and bikes plying the stretches of Ayala and Makati Avenues, the heart of the central business district. The premier city’s elevated and underground walkways are constantly bustling as well, providing thousands of pedestrians with convenient facilities to get to their destinations, whether it’s an office in a high-rise building or one of the many restaurant and retail options in world-class malls.

But there are other ways this city encourages you to keep moving. Parks and open spaces like Ayala Triangle Gardens on the corners of Ayala and Makati avenues and Paseo de Roxas Street, Washington Sycip Park and Legazpi Active Park in Legazpi Village, and Jaime Velasquez Park (or Salcedo Park) in Salcedo Village attract joggers and bikers at all hours.

If organized activity is more your thing, Makati has that too, in spirited dance and dojo classes. The country’s leading city for business, lifestyle, entertainment, and culture even has something for adventure-seekers who thrive in the unpredictability of escape room games. It All Happens in Makati definitely, and the best part is they’re all situated around the CBD!

MILO celebrates World Milk Day with 10 million jump skips

Tuesday, June 1

MILO, the country’s favorite powdered chocomalt milk drink, is celebrating World Milk Day by encouraging the entire nation to do 10 million jump skips along with the Department of Education (DepEd) students and Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health (MAPEH) teachers from all over the Philippines. World Milk Day is an international event observed every June 1 that recognizes the importance of milk as a global food, and MILO is joining in the celebration of its main ingredient.

“Milk is, in fact, the number one ingredient of our MILO Champion Formula. With this, plus our Champion Energy Nutrients, MILO provides protein and calcium to support bones and muscles, and the energy to reach 10 million skips as one nation,” said Veronica Cruz, MILO Business Executive Officer, Senior Vice President, Nestle Philippines, Inc.

The 10 million jump skips challenge runs for the entire month of June and is a part of the nationwide Jump Rope for the Public School System project, a tripartite partnership between DepEd, the Philippine Jump Rope Association (PJRA), and MILO.

“Mula noon hanggang ngayon, anuman ang panahon, MILO continues to nourish kids with the daily nutritious energy they need and the inspiration to grow with sports, and the life values that come with it. The current situation has left kids prone to be sedentary, so it’s vital that they nurture a daily habit of exercise. Our collaboration with PJRA and DepEd furthers our commitment to keeping kids active and healthy today, especially as they continue to stay at home,” added Cruz.

The nationwide challenge aims to catalyze jump rope as part of DepEd’s grassroots sports development program and properly train students, teachers, and school officials on the basics of the sport. MILO is supporting the initiative by (a) sponsoring jump ropes that DepEd will distribute to 150,000 Grade 4 students and 30,000 teachers across the country, (b) co-creating instructional videos with PJRA that are freely accessible through the MILO Sports Clinics Online (MSCO) programs on YouTube, and (c) sponsoring an interschool virtual tournament with the support of DepEd in school year 2021-2022.

MILO provides kids access to alternative home-based sports through the online programs co-created with its partner organizations. As activities are limited by what can be done indoors, jump rope has become a popular exercise for kids that requires minimal space and helps them stay fit and strong at home. All you need is a skipping rope and the winning energy to keep going. PJRA is the recognized local authority on jump rope, created to promote it as both a competitive sport and recreational fitness activity. The corporation is also sanctioned by the International Jump Rope Union (IJRU), the international governing body for the sport of jump rope/rope skipping.

“Jump rope is a fun activity for kids that can be done anywhere and any way. Studies also show that it can help improve motor skills and promote good mood. We are excited to work with MILO in spreading our love for jump rope and bringing it closer to kids through their online sports clinics,” said Noel Agra, President, Philippine Jump Rope Association.

DepEd is also exploring efforts to introduce jump rope to the schools’ physical education program, conduct physical or virtual training sessions and classes, and organize intra- and inter-school competitions. This is in line with its mission to find innovative ways to make learning fun and conducive for students at home.

“Active kids are better learners because exercise can help improve memory, behavior, and concentration. We’re delighted to partner with MILO once again as they help us achieve one of the goals of the Basic Education-Learning Continuity Plan in promoting the well- being and protection of learners in this new normal. This will increase the physical resilience of learners which will translate to improved academic performance,” DepEd Usec. Tonisito Umali, Esq., Undersecretary for Legislative Affairs, External Partnerships and Project Management Service, stated.

Join us from June 1-30 as MILO celebrates its main ingredient, milk, on World Milk Day with 10 million skips. Simply share a photo or video of you jumping rope and indicate the number of skips you made. Remember to include the official hashtags: #MILO10Mskips and #WorldMilkDay. You can also purchase special MILO bundled packs that come with a free MILO Home Court™ jump rope. Now available at Shopee and Lazada. Add to cart and jump in the fun!

Visit the MILOÃ’ Philippines Facebook page and https://www.milo.com.ph/ for updates and more information. Try the new MILO Champion Formula that contains more milk, more Champion Energy Nutrients with PROTOMALTÃ’, Iron, and Vitamins B2, B3, B6, and B12.

Herbalife Nutrition makes fitness achievable in the new normal through digital technology

Saturday, November 28

Social distancing and other health protocols limit the activities of most people especially those going to the gym for fitness. Premiere global nutrition company Herbalife Nutrition leveraged digital technology to bring fitness to people through videos, virtual events, and other interactive platforms. One such platform is its Fitness Portal, which features workout videos that range from beginner routines to advanced workouts – making fitness an achievable goal for everyone. All videos can be accessed for free.

“Three years ago, we started to work on our digital platform for fitness. It’s a free resource that’s for everybody,” said Samantha Clayton, Vice President, Worldwide Sports Performance and Fitness, and Chairwoman of the Fitness Advisory Board of Herbalife Nutrition.

Clayton spoke before members of the media and the blogging community during the Virtual Wellness Tour of Herbalife Nutrition Philippines. The forum was held in line with Herbalife Nutrition’s Get Moving with Good Nutrition, a campaign that aims at breaking health inertia and fostering communities to sup-port one another on their healthy living journey. It was launched as part of Herbalife Nutrition’s 40th anniversary celebration.

“Digital has been driving fitness for a long time. It really amplified the average everyday fitness profes-sional’s voice. If you see a lot of the content that’s on YouTube, Twitter, or Instagram, the content that gets the most amounts of likes tend to be fitness-based content, so the digital transformation of the fitness world has been happening for a long time. It has always been supported hand in hand with go-ing to a location to exercise, but as this year has gone on, the physical getting together piece has gone down a little, which has made the digital transformation of fitness move at a more rapid pace,” Clayton said.

She added that even when gyms start to open and people get back outside, people have realized the convenience of online workouts and that they could do it in their own time and in the comfort of their own home.

For companies that create content, the challenge lies in making it interesting enough for people to consumer.

“When the sports world kind of stopped this year, we really had a challenge to put out a really interest-ing and engaging content with our athletes to meet our consumers in their homes, meet our distribu-tors, and people in the community in a space that we know,” Clayton said.

To address this challenge, Clayton and her team came up with a 2020 Quarantine Sports and Fitness Content that comprised of athlete cook-off contests, social media workout videos, sports nutrition blog series, Facebook live workout series, and social media workout graphics.

A former Olympic athlete, Clayton added that the audience for fitness and sports nutrition has never been wider until today.

“For many years, the fitness industry and the sports nutrition industry, in particular, was all about the athlete. Everything was geared towards speaking to the athlete, a person that was really striving to be the best at their sport. What’s exciting for me today is to share with you that the audience not for fit-ness and sports nutrition has really expanded,” she said. “People are truly inspired and interested in what good nutrition has to offer.”

Citing data gathered by Herbalife Nutrition between February 23 - March 25, 2020, Clayton shared that key categories of conversation in Sports Nutrition International Online listening are: health (37%), market growth (28%), food (15%), science (10%), and nutrition (10%).

When it comes to what gets people moving, running and endurance training ranked highest at 26%, followed by bodybuilding/weightlifting at 23%, cycling at 13%, and plyometrics at 12%.

“I believe that it’s important that people subscribe to a healthy active lifestyle, which is not necessarily striving to be the best athlete in the world. It’s not about reaching peak performance; it’s about having simple daily habits each and every day so that you could be at your best. So whether that’s having a healthy breakfast or getting your minimum amount of exercise, a healthy active lifestyle is about sus-tainable healthy habits that last a lifetime. Your body is your one vehicle that will last you for the rest of your days. A lot of how that vehicle operates relies on you,” Clayton said.

A mother of four, including a set of triplets, Clayton holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health with a concentration on Nutrition and Wellness. She has competed in the Sydney 2000 Olym-pics, and is an Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA)-certified personal trainer and group exercise specialist and International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA)-certified personal trainer, group exercise specialist, and youth fitness specialist.

What makes a good workout towel

Thursday, October 15

Whether you have a gym membership or working out from home, saying active and achieving your fitness goals requires proper workout essentials. You must invest in a pair of shoes designed specifically for the workout you’ve chosen and an athletic apparel that has a lightweight feel and keeps moisture away from your body so you feel dry while you exercise. An essential that most of us don't give much thought when purchasing is a workout towel.

What makes a good workout towel?

Tesalate Antibacterial Workout Towels

It must be compact. No one wants to bring a big, heavy, and thick bath towel. What you need is a lightweight and compact workout towel that you can carry around while you workout and doesn't use much space in your gym bag.

It must be anti-bacterial. You will be sweating a lot while you workout. The bacteria on your skin will mix with your sweat and then transferred to your workout towel. You must choose a fabric that has features anti-bacterial technology.

It must be odour-free. The stinky smell of sweat that stays even if you wash your workout towel is annoying and worrying. If it doesn't smell fresh, it means it isn't clean.

It must be double-sided. Make your workout towel multi-functional. You can use one side to dry off your sweat while the other side can serve as an added layer for your mat when you do floor exercises.

Tesalate Antibacterial Workout Towels

It must be Tesalate Australia Workout Towel.

Tesalate Australia is the number 1 choice for beach towels and with the introduction of their latest product, the Tesalate Antibacterial Workout Towels, a perfect companion in achieving your fitness goals.

Tesalate incorporates zinc as an antibacterial agent in the fabric. Compared with other substances such as silver and copper, the power of zinc-based additives provides broad spectrum antimicrobial protection to fabrics that are exposed to moisture such as sweat that can cause the growth of bacteria, fungi, mold and mildew. Aside from odour build up resulting from these elements, exposure can also cause individuals with allergies some untoward health effects.

Tesalate Antibacterial Workout Towels

The Tesalate Antibacterial Workout Towels are available in fun and vibrant designs and they ship from Sydney to anywhere in the world.

To know more about the entire range of products, visit https://worldwide.tesalate.com/ and follow them on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest @tesalate

5 Tips for Staying Active While On Vacation

Friday, June 5

Just because you’re on vacation doesn’t mean that you need to abandon all aspects of your fitness journey. While you may not be able to work out as often as you want to, there are still several ways to stay active. The key to staying active during this time is planning, planning, and some more planning! So, while enjoying yourself might be at the top of your list of things to do, there’s still room for you to stay fit in a way that fits into your schedules, so here are five helpful tips for staying active when you’re on vacation.

1. Align your expectations

If you have a structured fitness regimen while at home, it is unlikely that you'll be able to maintain it while on vacation. Let's imagine that your accommodation doesn’t have a gym, then locating a gym near you and paying for a month-long subscription is downright uneconomical, especially if you’re only staying for a few days. Even if this isn’t an issue for you, in the midst of all your vacation activities, you may not always have the time to stick to your daily exercise routine.

Based on all these random factors, it is important to manage your expectations beforehand, so you don’t beat yourself up if you can’t maintain your regular workout. Instead, try and remember that doing even 50 percent of your normal workout while on vacation is an accomplishment to be proud of.

2. Do your research

Before traveling, carry out some research on the location you'll call home for a few days. If you can find a gym near you that offers a weekly or daily membership payment setup, that'll be great. You see, your workout while on vacation is highly dependent on the free time you have, which can vary from day to day, so a single day pass option at a gym would be the most realistic route. Also, find out if the gym holds regular fitness classes. Then, go-ahead to research parks and jogging/running trails that you can utilize for exercise. The key is to plan in advance so that you are prepared when you get there.

3. Pack some equipment

While you may not be able to pack heavyweights in your suitcase, there's some other workout equipment that you can fit in your box. Consider packing some resistance bands and a skipping rope, as well as some light dumbbell weights. This equipment can be useful especially if you cannot find a gym near your hotel or Airbnb. They can also help you get your cardio and strength training workouts in during any short break you have in the middle of your activities.

4. Use your room

Sometimes, you may not feel like leaving your room at all, but you still want to get a workout in. Here’s an idea for you, utilize your room! Your room is especially useful for times when you’ve had a great meal and need to move around a bit to help with your digestion.

Even more, exercising can be a form of heartburn relief if you’re experiencing discomfort after eating. In these cases, your room is actually the best and most accessible workout spot. You don’t need to do anything too strenuous, try jogging on the spot, some chair squats, and even abdominal crunches to get you started.

5. Take advantage of every chance you get

Planning ahead is great, but sometimes you get there and realize that your plans are simply not going to work. Don’t get discouraged. Instead, try and make use of every opportunity you can to get a little bit of exercise in. One simple thing you can do is to walk as much as possible. With your phone as a GPS, you can take long walks to different locations around the town.

This is also a great chance for you to sightsee, so that’s killing two birds with one stone. Make use of the workout equipment you packed and get a workout in. You can even use online exercise videos to workout in your room. The great thing is that some of them don’t even require any equipment.

The Truth About Motivation: How to Hack Your Brain and Reach Your Fitness Goals

Wednesday, March 20

Truth About Motivation

Let’s be honest: many of us set the same New Year’s resolutions year after year. Actually, almost half of Americans tried to lose weight over the past 12 months. Striving to lose weight or incorporate more physical activity into your weekly schedule is a commendable starting point because it means you aim to be healthier.

Goal setting is easy, but actually achieving those objectives may prove more difficult. If you want to hit your weight loss target or fitness goal, motivation is key. It is a necessary element for a new behavior to occur.

Why Motivation Matters in Weight Loss and Fitness

So, how can you stick to your resolutions and finally cross them off your list? How do you stay motivated to reach your fitness goals?

Well, to start, you’ll need to believe in yourself and imagine what success will look like.

Belief can involve two things:

  1. What you believe about yourself
  2. What you believe you are capable of
Belief is critical for success for a very powerful reason: it breeds confidence.

Take weight loss, for example. Studies have consistently found that weight loss is more likely to be achieved and maintained if the person has a strong belief that they can accomplish it.

This confidence in one’s ability to achieve a specific goal is termed self-efficacy, and it is crucial to change the mindset with which we approach a goal. It determines how much effort will be used and how long it will be sustained in the face of obstacles.

According to psychologist Albert Bandura, expectations of self-efficacy are derived from four principal sources of information:

1. Performance accomplishments
2. Secondhand experience
3. Verbal persuasion
4. Physiological states

The Truth About Motivation and Willpower

The truth is: willpower is limited and self-motivation is difficult. Only about 8% of people who have made a New Year’s resolution achieve it. Plus, approximately 80% of resolutions fail by the second week of February. So why is it so hard to keep motivated?

One of the main reasons is that change entails stress. Stress can make you feel frustrated, fatigued or anxious. Those feelings can become the fuel of self-sabotage, causing you to lose motivation.

Lack of motivation may also arise from setting unrealistic goals. The main reasons for doing so are optimism and uncertainty. You are sure you are going to make it this time, even though you are not really sure what a realistic goal is.

The Consequences of Unrealistic Goals

Failing to reach your weight loss or fitness goals may result in negative emotions like disappointment or frustration.

This, in turn, might lead to shame and self-defeating thoughts, such as:

  • I can’t do this.
  • Exercise is too hard or boring.
  • My weight loss goal is overwhelming, why even try?
Negative self-talk will make it harder for you to visualize success. But keep in mind that it’s a process. Losing weight and being physically active takes patience and time. This is where small wins become so important.

Why Small Wins Matter: Your Motivational Fuel

Small wins are milestones you set to help you reach your specific goal. They serve as evidence that success can be achieved and, therefore, they can boost your confidence and change your beliefs on your own abilities to accomplish a goal.

For example, if your purpose is to lose 40 pounds, you might want to break that complex goal into more manageable pieces to handle: say, losing one pound a week. Each week you lose a pound is a small win.

Small wins are both motivating and encouraging. They can help reduce stress about an overwhelming goal, and in turn, give you a daily good habits action plan to follow. You can later leverage that competence toward subsequent, larger successes.

The Science of Small Wins

Behavior scientists have observed that encouraging people to set challenging goals is more likely to stimulate initial readiness to change. However, when faced with obstacles or challenges, reducing barriers to achieving smaller goals is a good strategy to keep motivation from decaying.

The reason behind this has to do with chemical processes that occur in our body. Accomplishments, even small ones, activate the reward circuitry in our brains. This means the dopamine neurotransmitter is released, filling us with energy, happiness, and pride.

Your brain will like the feeling so much, you will feel compelled to repeat the healthy action that triggered it. Your brain will be prone to turning it into a habit. This will make it easier for you to keep choosing a healthy meal over junk food or striving to hit the 1k in the treadmill.

How to Use Small Wins to Boost Motivation and Achieve Your Fitness Goals

These practical steps to achieve small wins will help you to get started:

1. Chose a goal that is meaningful to you

Don’t focus on goals that are trendy or that worked for someone else. You are a unique individual and your goals should reflect that. Set a goal that makes you want to work for it.

2. Make sure that your goals are SMART

Your weight loss or fitness goal should be specific, measurable, attainable, results-oriented and time-bound.

For example, if you haven’t done exercise in a while and want to get back on track, a SMART goal could be: I will hit the gym two days a week for a month and burn at least 1,000 calories each day.

3. Surround yourself with social support

Good habits are tough to establish, so having a community around you for support, guidance, and encouragement can be critical.

At Herbalife Nutrition, our nutrition clubs are just that: small businesses where like-minded people come together to improve their health, fitness, and wellbeing all while benefitting from a supportive community who provide encouragement and guidance.

4. Notice your small wins and celebrate them

Take the time to appreciate your small wins! Don’t limit your happiness by thinking they are not worth the excitement. If you managed to lose the pound you intended this week, share it with a friend who cares and enjoy!

There’s no better time to begin pursuing your goals than today. And if you follow the steps above, I’m confident you’ll be well on your way to a happier and healthier year.

2019 MILO Summer Sports Clinics

Saturday, February 9

Summer is almost here and I'm sure parents are looking for activities that kids will enjoy during the break. MILO Philippines ushers in the much-awaited summer break as they officially launch the 2019 MILO Summer Sports Clinics today at KidZania. With its commitment to provide the nutritious energy to get more children into sports, MILO’s yearly program continues to offer a wide array of sports activities that kids can participate in throughout the summer.

Driven by the “Get Your Child into Sports” campaign, the MILO Summer Sports Clinics aims to reinforce the importance of sports in a child’s holistic development. Children today are faced with numerous barriers that hinder them from engaging into sports such as digital distractions, lack of safe play places, and fear of trying. MILO’s annual summer clinic seeks to address these challenges by highlighting sports as a means not only to get kids active, but also to teach valuable life lessons one can learn outside the classroom.

“Getting children involved in sports would be a more enjoyable and productive way to healthy living,” said Willy De Ocampo, Business Unit Manager, MILO Philippines. “We believe that physical and social development lay the foundation for a child’s growth, which is why our MILO Summer Sports Clinics teaches children the fundamentals of various sports in a unique and scientific way and helps them develop character-forming values.

Energizing More Children

This year, MILO makes the Summer Sports Clinics accessible to more aspiring young athletes as they continue their expansion in the Visayas and Mindanao region. The clinics will be available starting end-March, in over 700 venues to more than 30,000 children nationwide.

Arnis, Ultimate Frisbee, and Wushu are this year’s newest additions to the program’s sports offerings. Apart from those sports, the MILO Summer Sports Clinics will continue to provide training to different sports disciplines, namely Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Fencing, Football, Futsal, Golf, Gymnastics, Karatedo, Lawn Tennis, Parkour, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Touch Rugby, and Volleyball.

To enhance the summer clinic experience of the participants, select clinic organizers will offer a MILO Welcome Kit that contains an exclusive Summer Sports Clinics drawstring bag and MILO to ensure the participants will get their Champion Energy Nutrients when they embark on their summer courses.

“MILO contains Champion Energy Nutrients such as milk, Protomalt, B-Vitamins, and Iron to help children get active especially in sports,” said De Ocampo. “So, not only will the kids get the athletic and social benefits at the Summer Sports Clinics, they will also be provided with the nutritious energy of MILO.”

Nourishing Champions Through the Years

For more than 35 years, MILO prides itself in partnering with a roster of esteemed organizations such as the BEST Center and Philippine Taekwondo Association among many others, that have been instrumental in maintaining the sports excellence that the Summer Sports Clinics is known for.

Expert coaches and instructors who have competed and won in local and international competitions such as the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and the Olympics will handle the programs. These mentors use modern and scientific approaches that will help participants gain appreciation for the different sports, live a healthy and active lifestyle, and embody the morals of discipline, confidence, teamwork, perseverance, and hard work.

By centering on values in sports, MILO’s Summer Sports Clinics along with its other sports programs, have created outstanding personas in the sporting scene. The roster of alumni includes BEST Center graduate Chris Tiu, Taekwondo clinic graduate and SEA Games medalist Japoy Lizardo, and Gymnastics clinic graduate and SEA Games gold medalist Kaitlyn De Guzman.

“We look forward to nurture more children to be champions not just as athletes but also as individuals,” said Luigi Pumaren, MILO Sports Executive. “We encourage parents to introduce their kids to a fun, active and healthy lifestyle and make their summer worthwhile with the MILO Summer Sports Clinics.”

UNHCR Get Fit For A Cause 2 Billion Kilometers to Safety Campaign

Wednesday, October 24

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) launches the 2 Billion Kilometers to Safety campaign, a virtual movement where Filipinos are encouraged to take a step in solidarity with the world’s refugees.

By committing to run, walk, or cycle, participants are contributing to the global goal of 2 billion kilometers, just as refugees do each year to reach the first point of safety.

The target distance draws a parallel to the cumulative kilometers walked by an estimated 68.5 million refugees and forcibly displaced persons globally—a connection that will allow supporters, especially those targeting to achieve their fitness goals, to walk in solidarity with some of the most vulnerable people of our time.

Every Step Counts

Alin Nisa is among the 720,000 Rohingya who fled persecution and violence in Myanmar last year. When her village was attacked, she and her family was forced to escape in the dead of the night at 3:00 AM.

They had nothing but the clothes on their back. With her husband, mother-in-law and two young children, she crossed mountains and rivers. Along the journey, they walked across water-logged paddy fields, in torrential rain, sometimes through the night.

Finally, after a perilous journey of 10 days and 102 kilometers, they arrived at the Kutupalong refugee camp in Bangladesh.

Now safe in Bangladesh, the family has built a shelter, using plastic sheeting and bamboo - all provided by UNHCR. They also received a cooking kit, mats and blankets.

Add your kilometers, lend your voice

If you've been inspired by Alin's resilience and courage you can try walking, running or cycling 102 kilometers. Alin walked that journey to safety, carrying her two children through many nights.

To join 2 Billion Kilometers to Safety campaign, UNHCR encourages supporters to register and add their kilometers directly onto the campaign website stepwithrefugees.org/en-ph/

You can choose to sync your fitness apps like Fitbit or Strava to automatically add your kilometers, but you can also add them manually by setting a target up to a maximum of 50 kilometers per entry.

You can also support by encouraging others to join the cause and helping to raise funds. Aside from reaching your own target distance, you can organize fundraising campaigns to help the world’s refugees either through your very own school, sports clubs or running communities.
