During the event, we were taught simple exercises that will help tone the 3 As: Arms, Abs, and Ass. Try this with 2-3 sets with 30 seconds each exercise and have 30 seconds to 1 minute rest in between.

Arms
  • Pulsing Front Raises: Grab 2 lbs weights or two bottles of water. Lift your arms in front and slowly pulse your arms up and down.
  • Push Up: Chest and hips drop and rise at the same time, tuck belly button in by bringing ribs down and hips to tighten up the core.
Abs
  • High Plank: assume a push up position and plant your toes into the floor. Your head should be in line with your back. Keep your core tight and squeeze your butt. Hold this position.
  • Leg Raises: Lie down with your hands to your sides for support and raise your legs so they are off the ground while keeping the abdominal muscle tight. Slowly raise your legs 90 degrees and slowly return to starting position but make sure your feet don't touch the floor.
Ass
  • Squat: Just like sitting down on a chair, with stomach in and chest out, raise your arms in front. Drop your butt and push up through the heels.
  • Glute Bridge: Lie with your back flat on the ground with your knees bent, keep your palm face down on the floor for support. Push through your heel, getting your hips as high up as you can while squeezing your butt at the top.
Asian Breast Center at Centuria Medical Makati offers innovative breast cancer treatments, consultation, and diagnostics to prevent breast cancer. The center is the first freestanding ambulatory cancer care unit for profit-for-charity dedicated to the comprehensive treatment and management of breast diseases.

Asian Breast Center will offer the latest breast cancer therapy for early stages. One of these is the Intraoperative Radiation Therapy, an advanced breast cancer treatment for stage 0 to 1. Unlike other radiation therapies that radiates the whole breast, IORT targets mainly the specific area where the cancer is.

Early detection saves life

Breast cancer is preventable and curable but it should be detected during the early stage. You can do a regular self-check and should get screened at least once a year. Mammography is recommended once you reach the age of 40.

Women are born care takers. We are so busy taking care of our loved ones that we take for granted taking care of ourselves. It is very important that we stay healthy. Always remember: You can't pour from an empty cup.

Get Your Child Into Sports This Summer With Milo Summer Sports Clinics

Thursday, March 8

I was never physically active when I was a child. Summers were spent doing DIY, crafts and arts with my siblings and cousins. We were 5 girls and 1 boy. The unico ijo became a competitive swimmer while the girls enrolled at Yamaha School of Music.

I learned my first sport when I was 30. My husband was back from his US trip and brought home a tennis racket for me. He got me a coach at Marikina Sports Center and later on continued training at Park Ridge in Antipolo. I can say I can hit the ball but I'm far from being good tennis player yet. I stopped playing and it has been ages since I last stepped on the court until I was invited at the launch of Milo Summer Sports Clinic.

The longest running and most participated sports program in the country will offer training in 18 different sports: Badminton, Basketball, Bowling, Chess, Crossfit for Kids, Fencing, Football, Futsal, Golf, Gymnastics, Ice Skating, Karatedo, Tennis, Parkour, Swimming, Table Tennis, Touch Rugby, and Volleyball.

For complete list of schedule and venues, click HERE.

Tennis coach Kevin Mamawal and Guia Arzaga made me experienced how it's like to participate in Milo's Tennis sport program.

Why you should get your child into sports

The lifestyle of children nowadays hinders them from being physically active. Most kids spend all day glued to their gadgets or the television. This can lead to several health issues such as poor eyesight, deterioration of posture, and obesity. Aside from health, sports teaches children valuable life lessons such as the value of teamwork, confidence building, acceptance of defeat and celebration of success. Sports teach respect, obedience, and discipline.

Why The Forbidden Black Rice Is Good For You

Thursday, March 1

Did you know why Black Rice is called the Forbidden Rice? It is because during ancient time, only the emperors were allowed to eat black rice to ensure they maintain good health for longevity. The common people were the one eating the white rice. For us Filipinos, white rice is very much part of our culture. A meal is just incomplete without rice and we quickly order an extra cup when paired with great food! “Unli-Rice” has become part of the vernacular.

Black rice has been growing in popularity nowadays because of its health benefits. If it was good for the emperors back then, why should we not eat more of it now that it is no longer forbidden?

Sunnywood Superfoods Corp. paved the way in making available this amazing grain under the brand name Jordan Farms. The company, which started distributing unpolished, healthy rice in the market 20 years ago, had to work hard on convincing supermarkets to pick up the product and make black rice readily available to consumers. To support this, the supplier had to launch a sustained awareness effort to educate the people about the many advantages of consuming black rice. This effort continues even up to this day. *Fortunately, with the prevalence of the internet, good news gets around quickly and people can get useful information using search engines.

Nowadays, health enthusiasts, chefs and the general public alike are embracing black rice. If you still haven’t tried this variety, here are some of the benefits that will convince you to do so:

It is rich in antioxidants.

Black rice is known for its high antioxidant properties, with its hull containing the most amount of anthocyanin. Antioxidants help prevent cardiovascular disease, improve brain function, and reduce inflammation. Anthocyanin also keeps free radicals from moving in the body, making it helpful in preventing diabetes and cancer.

In addition, the high antioxidant level of black rice makes it helpful for anti-aging because it helps keep cells healthy. Antioxidant-rich foods aid in slowing down cellular aging and preventing massive cell damage, making it also helpful for diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

It helps with weight management.

Unpolished black rice is rich in fiber because of its bran. Though it cannot be entirely associated with weight loss, its high fiber quality helps a lot with weight management. Since our bodies digest fiber slowly, adding black rice to our diets makes us feel fuller for longer periods of time and also curbs cravings. In short, it takes away the “unli-rice” urge!

Protein is very important in trimming down excess weight and building up muscles. Black rice contains 8.5 grams of protein per 100 grams of serving so you get enough to help with weight management if you have been meaning to watch the pounds. Moreover, this rice variety is also a good source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

It helps the liver.

The liver is one of the body’s biggest organs responsible for regulating our hormones and processing nutrients from the food we eat. Several studies have indicated that introducing black rice into diets can help improve liver health. Results from the studies indicate that black rice can help prevent fatty liver disease and improve blood lipid levels of those who consume it. It also aids in lowering triglyceride and cholesterol levels as well.

Jordan Farms Black Rice is sourced from farms that practice organic farming. Sunnywood Superfoods Corp., the company behind the brand, supports farmers and cooperatives that are actively and seriously engaged in the organic farming of rice. This has been one of its mission statements from the beginning. In addition to black rice, the brand also carries the red and brown rice varieties.

How To Cook Black Rice Properly

Tuesday, January 30

I received black rice from Jordan Farms Natural Foods and it took me two months to finally cook it. I've read articles that it's a hit or miss especially if it's your first time to cook black rice. My rice cooker also don't have any kind of settings for different kinds of rice which makes me more afraid to try cooking.

For my first try, I soaked the black rice for 30 minutes and then let the standard rice cooker do the rest of the work. Result: If it was pasta I was cooking, it was al dente. It was firm to the bite and I kinda feel like it was undercooked.  It was also very messy. Purple starch were all over my kitchen counter and some splattered over the floor. It really made me think if regular rice cooker can really be used for cooking black rice.

For my second try, the black rice was cooked much better. Here are the things you have to keep in mind:
  • Rinse the the rice thoroughly to make sure you remove excess starch
  • The ratio should be 2.5 cups for water for every 1 cup of rice
  • You have to soak the rice for 30 minutes before cooking
  • It takes 45 minutes for the black rice to cook. Since my rice cooker automatically turns off once the cooking is done, I make sure I leave the rice for 15 minutes more.

Prep and cooking time take longer than white rice but the health benefits of eating black rice is worth the wait. Black rice is low in calories and high in fiber. It is also loaded with B vitamins, a good source of iron, and antioxidants that help prevent cancer and heart diseases.

The black rice is aromatic and has a nutty taste. I enjoyed mine with Pork Ribs Sinigang.

Sunpiology Resolution Run A Huge Success

Tuesday, January 23

I have been dreaming of one day joining a fun run. I signed up on a few but never got myself to join on the event day. When I got invited to sign up for the Sun Life Financial Sunpiology Resolution Run, I didn't have second thoughts. I must admit though that I was doubting if I'd be able to finish the 3K.

Why Sunpiology Resolution Run

Sunpiology is not just all about running and scoring a selfie with the celebrities. It raises awareness about diabetes. I was a borderline type 2 diabetes and was not even aware how close I am to having the disease. The event supports the diabetes awareness programs of the Institute of Studies for Diabetes Foundation, Inc. Sunpiology also raise funds for education of the scholars of the Hebreo 12:1 Foundation and Star Magic scholars.

A personal achievement

My husband joined me at the Sunpiology Run. It was also his first time but he was not there just to tick off an item from his bucket list. He has been supportive of me in everything I want to do and achieve  no matter how crazy my ideas are sometimes. He joined the run to make sure I will make it to the finish line. He paced me during the first half of the run and let me go on my own for the remaining half.

I can't forget the happy look on his face when I saw him waiting for me and his arms wide open to embrace me as I crossed the finish line. I dedicate my 3K finisher medal to him because whenever I doubt myself, he always believe in me and make me believe in myself again. Just like Sun Life, he makes me live brighter.

Personalized Cancer Care: Gaining Advantage Against Cancer

Thursday, November 16

I still remember the day when my mom complained of pain in her abdomen. I convinced her that we should consult a doctor. I suspected something was seriously wrong. She had Stage 2B breast cancer and was declared "cancer-free" after undergoing surgery and chemotherapy. Eight years later, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 liver cancer.

When I asked my mom's oncologist what happened considering my mom was regularly monitored, she explained that while a cancer patient is in remission, the cancer will stay in other organs (organ depositor) like the liver, lungs, brain, or bones and stays dormant. Remission means a diminution of the seriousness or intensity of disease or pain; a temporary recovery.

According to Dr. Ioannis Papasotiriou, remission and cancer-free are two different things. It is not easy to put the label cancer-free to patients and more often than not, the term "cancer-free" is carelessly being used.

A cancer diagnosis is the most frightening news you'd hear from your doctor. While some will exhaust all means to win the battle against cancer, there are those who will fall into the pit of depression.

What if it's possible to detect cancer in it's earlier stage and there's a better chance of managing the disease?

There are cases where the treatment is nearly as bad as the disease itself.

What if you can identify which therapy will deliver the best possible result through a more precise, more individualized management plan?

"There's no one-size-fits-all method to cancer
diagnosis and treatment."

Each cancer is as unique as the person suffering from it. The Research Genetic Cancer Center (RGCC) is a world-class laboratory that specializes in medical and cancer genetics. It focuses on early detection, personalized chemosensitivity testing, and accurate monitoring. They believe that the only way for doctors to come up with an effective battle plan is to be fully knowledgeable of the cancer, at genetic level.

At RGCC, the first step in cancer therapy is isolating and indentifying Circulating Tumor Cells (CTCs). CTCs are cells that have broken away from a primary cancer site and entered the blood stream.

Oncocount is RGCC's screening test that gives information on the presence and concentration of CTCs. These cells could potentially spread the disease even to distant organs.

Oncotrace shows the presence of CTCs, their concentration, and immunophenotype (what type of cell it is).

Oncotrail is the test tailor-made for specific types of cancers used for follow up control on old cancers.

With the information that these tests provide, new cancers are detected and diagnosed; existing cancers are monitored; and information about the possible risk of recurrence of a current or previous cancer is provided.

Once the cancer cells have been identified and targeted, the next step is the test for chemosensitivity or chemoresistance. These tests provide guidance in deciding on the best available treatment for the patient. These tests take out the trial and error aspect in cancer treatment because the effectivity of a specific treatment is already determined. Also, the significant side effects are also known before embarking on a chemotherapy program.

Onconomics gives information on whether or not a specific drug works on the cancer cells of the patient. Oncomomics Extracts, in the meantime, shows if natural biological substances or extracts can counter cancer cells. This gives the patient the option of using natural substances as a complementary treatment strategy. Onconomics Plus is a combination of the two tests.

Emphirical chemotherapy may have a low percentage of efficacy because each person’s response to drugs can be different. Every person has a unique genetic response to cancer, depending on their genetic fingerprint.

There are the Rapid Metabolizers, whose cells can process the drug so fast that it doesn’t have an effect on them; Accumulators, on the other hand, cannot take out the by-products of a drug so they often suffer from debilitating side effects and toxicities; and there are the Normal Metabolizers, who can normally process a drug to its active form and releases its byproducts.

ChemoSNiP examines the inherited variations in genes that dictate drug response and explore the ways these variations can be used to predict how the patient will respond- positive, negative or non-response- to the drug.

Meanwhile, the Immune-Frame looks for the type of cells that are responsible for the activation or repression of one’s immune system. Cells of the primary tumor may have the ability to spread to other organs. To help doctors and patients in proactive monitoring of the metastases trends, Metastat can help identify the potential organ that can be affected in the future, like the lungs, bone, liver, and brain.

The main goal of RGCC Genetic Cancer tests is to discover, analyze, and screen the cancer cells at every stage of the disease to give the patient an advantage against the fight against cancer.

With the information from the tests, patients and their doctors are better equipped in creating a precise, effective and sustainable health management plan. Meanwhile, health and wellness facilities focused on creating health can work with the patient and physician in developing a health plan that would keep the rest of the body strong and healthy, through diet and lifestyle modification, to help prevent the spread of the cancer. The attending physician or oncologist can focus more on the cancer treatment and management plan.

The RGCC Genetic Cancer tests are made available and accessible by Global Medical Technologies (GMT). GMT has been at the forefront of making some of the most up-to-date and relevant medical technologies and diagnostics from developed countries accessible to Filipino medical practitioners and patients, and help them outsmart health issues.

The RGCC tests can be requested through your Physician. It is exclusively distributed in the Philippines by Global Medical Technologies, for more information, patients and health practitioners may visit www.gmtmanila.com.

Treatment Options For Infertility

Thursday, October 26

Every month, many women feel depressed whenever their period come after being delayed for a few days. Many couples are wishing to see two pink lines and hope for a positive no matter how blurred the second line is. I was (am) one of them.

I used to think that getting pregnant is the easiest, most natural thing that will happen to a woman. I was wrong. Sometimes I regret waiting to long. I am like most of the women my age. Career-driven. Everything happening in my life is well-planned. I was in my 30s when me and hubby decided it's about time we start a family. We have our own house, a car, a stable career. Perfect time, isn't it?

Well, I learned that conceiving isn't as easy and as natural as it should be for me. After two years of trying to conceive (TTC) and countless of pregnancy test kit wasted, I remained childless.

Merck Fertility Awareness 2017

Merck Philippines understands what every couple longing for a child feel. The company have been advocating Fertility Awareness in the past five years to let couples know that there is hope and to educate them about fertility and their options.

Did you know that 1 out of 10 Filipinos suffer from infertility?

When a couple is having difficulty conceiving, people are always pointing finger to the woman. Infertility is a disease of the reproductive system and the male infertility factor should not be overlooked. If you have been trying to achieve pregnancy in the last 12 months, it's about time to consult a Reproductive Endocrinologist.  REs are fertility doctors that have intensive training, with focus on the complex human reproductive system. They can guide you and give you a clearer idea of what to expect when you start fertility treatments should you have fertility issues.

Treatment options for infertility

The Reproductive Endocrinologist assesses the condition of patient. Factors such as age, # of years trying to conceive, medical history are taken into consideration. The doctor will then start with the least invasive and most cost-effective option to get the patient pregnant.

Timed Intercourse
  • there should be a good quality egg
  • the fallopian tubes have to be open
  • there should be an adequate number of rapidly swimming and "good-looking" sperms
  • chances of getting pregnant: 20-30 yrs old - 25% ; above 35 years old - less than 10%
Artificial Insemination (IUI)
  • there should be a good quality egg
  • at least one of the fallopian tubes has to be open
  • total motile sperms inseminated should be 5 million
  • chances of getting pregnant per cycle: 15-20%
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
  • there should be a minimum number of developing follicles
  • the fallopian tubes are not required
  • there should be a minimum number of "good-looking sperms
  • chances of getting pregnant: 35 years old and younger - 41% ; up to 42 years old - less than 12%

Dennis and Maurine Basilio have been married for 16 years and were trying to conceive for 13 years. I talked to Maurine and we had a lot in common. PCOS. Thin uterine lining. Her first two IVF procedures were unsuccessful. She had her two remaining embryos frozen for three years before trying again for the 3rd time. Finally, the IVF procedure was successful and they now have twin - a boy and a girl.

The cost of IVF procedure starts at P300,000. The medication will depend on how the body will respond to the treatment.

How To Track Your Ovulation

Tuesday, October 24

As a woman, it is very important to learn how to track your ovulation, especially if you are planning to get pregnant. Tracking your ovulation process will help you to know when you are fertile or not. Knowing how to track these things will increase your chance of getting pregnant. There are various ways a woman can track her ovulation period, which include counting the days of your cycle, checking how your cervical mucus looks, knowing your basal body temperature, using an ovulatory calculator, and using an ovulation kit.

If you have a healthy body and a regular cycle, then it won’t be difficult to calculate your ovulation period. What you need to do is to determine the length of your cycle. The menstrual cycle of most women starts from the first day of your menstruation to the day before your next menstruation begins. Most women and doctors, look at their menstrual cycle as a 28-day cycle. However, for other women with irregular periods, other techniques will help them in tracking their ovulation period.

Listen to your body

You can track your ovulation by knowing the nature of your body. The body usually sends you a signal when you are ovulating. The signals are always in the form of a pang of pain or cramps in your lower abdomen (usually in affecting one side, which is the side you are ovulating from). This monthly signal is usually as a result of the release or maturity of the egg from the ovary. This is why you should pay closer attention to your body, in other to make the tracking of ovulation easy.

Track your basal body temperature

Your basal body temperature is an effective way of tracking your ovulation period. The basal body temperature can be measured using a special basal body temperature. Your basal body temperature is the starting reading you get before you get out of bed, talk or sit up, which is usually very early in the morning, after sleeping for three to five hours.

The basal body temperature changes throughout your cycle as variations in your hormone level happen. The estrogen dominates during the first half of your menstrual cycle. There will be an increase in your body temperature, during the second half of your cycle. It is due to the surge in progesterone that gets the uterus ready for an implantable and fertilized egg. The temperature of your body will be lower during the first half of your cycle and slightly higher in the second half.

It means, your basal body temperature will be at its lowest point during ovulation and immediately rise to about half a degree as soon as ovulation occurs. You should also note that tracking your basal body temperature for only a month will not help you in your quest of tracking your ovulation period but should provide evidence that your ovulation has occurred. However, tracking it for some months will help in seeing your cycle pattern. It enables you to predict the days when you are fertile and when to have sex accordingly.

Get to know your cervix

In order to track your ovulation, it is important for you to know everything about your cervix. The cervix is the lower narrow part that connects your vagina and uterus that stretches to accommodate the head of a baby. The body senses when the shift in hormones that indicate when the egg is about to be released from the ovary. It begins by preparing for the incoming millions of sperms to give the egg the best chance to get fertilized.

Another technique used to track ovulation is the position of the cervix. Your cervix will be low, firm and closed during the beginning of your cycle. But, as you start ovulating, it pulls back up, softens a little, and opens a little, to allow passage of the sperm through it, on their way to their target. Some women might have a tougher time feeling these changes, while some can easily feel it. It is advisable to check your cervix each day using one or two fingers and record your observations.

Another technique used to track ovulation is to watch for changes in the cervical mucus. You will notice these changes as your discharge carries your partner sperms to the ovum deep inside you.A mucous that is fertile is clear, stretchy, watery, and it appears similar to egg white. It is caused by changes to the cells that encourage the smooth passage through the cervix towards the fallopian tube. A non-fertile mucous is more acidic than the fertile mucus, and a less acidic environment favors the sperm more rather than killing them off.

Buy an ovulation predictor kit

Another effective way of tracking your ovulation is by purchasing an ovulation tracking kit. Most women use these kits to identify their ovulation date 12 to 24 hours before the date by checking the levels of luteinizing hormone or the last hormones to reach its peak before ovulation. All you are required to do is to pee on a stick and wait for the indicator to identify whether you are about to ovulate or not. Another option is the saliva test; it measures the level of estrogen in your saliva as your ovulation comes nearer. All you are required to do is to look at your saliva under the test’s eyepiece when you are ovulating. It will reveal a microscopic pattern that looks like a frost on a window pane or the leaves of a fern plant. However, not all women get a good fern, but this test is reusable and can be cheaper than most kits.

In conclusion, you should note that none of these techniques can tell you when you are ovulating. They can only indicate when your ovulation might occur. So it is important to have patience no matter the method you choose. Just don’t forget to plan romantic meetings with your partner or whatever that puts you and your partner in the mood to have a baby.
