Are Filipinos ready for blockchain technology? Or do they know what blockchain is all about?

Blockchain was conceptualized 11 years ago and in a study conducted by IBM in 2016, financial companies are starting to explore the benefits of adapting this technology to make their operations cost efficient and improve their services.

Other industries have also started taking advantage of blockchain technology. However, the growth in interest of the applications of blockchain and distributed ledger technologies (DLT) for the future-thinking enterprises don't have the manpower who are skilled in this field.

"There are lots of people who understood coding on the blockchain but when it came to actual strategic thinking on how to apply blockchain to business, that is when there's a massive gap in the market," said Austin Lewinsmith, co-founder of Blockchain Collective. "Currently, there are lots of universities that were doing blockchain short courses but without certifications."

Blockchain Accounting Workshop at San Beda University

The first-ever Blockchain Accounting Workshop by the Blockchain Collective in the Philippines was held at the San Beda University in Manila. It was a two-day workshop designed to prepare 200 Accounting and Finance students with a sound foundation of blockchain knowledge. The training combines theory, practical, and a demonstrative approach.

The Board of Accountancy has included accounting for blockchain technology in the course outline of the upcoming CPA licensure examinations. San Beda wants their graduates who will be taking the board examinations to be equipped with sound foundation of blockchain knowledge.

"We like to make sure that the students understand in the accountant's perspective what blockchain is all about because if you are not transparent about the transaction then many people will be losing trust with the process. Understanding blockchain technology will help our student become future professionals who really know how the technology affects corporate governance, and how it will be affecting the business community," said Dr. Jackqui Moreno, Vice-Dean - Accountancy and Business of the College of Arts and Sciences of San Beda University.

The two-day intensive workshop delivered practical and relevant skills, knowledge, and examples of blockchain's uses, benefits, and limitations as it relates to accounting and the financial sector. It guided the students through the process of understanding blockchain's history,  evolution, terminologies, current place in the market, and its potential to disrupt many industry sectors. The attendees were also given the opportunity to navigate a blockchain explorer.

The seminar includes lifetime access to Learning Management System and online resources, seminar kit, online examination, and Certificate of Attendance that is recognized globally.
