Stepping into Wonderland: My Whimsical Theater Experience with REP’s Alice in Wonderland

Thursday, August 28

There are days when adulting feels like a never-ending cycle of bills, traffic, and endless to-do lists — and honestly, I sometimes wish I could just escape to a world where imagination rules. That’s exactly what happened when I stepped into the REP Eastwood Theater for Repertory Philippines’ (REP) newest musical treat: Alice in Wonderland. Running from August 23 to December 14, 2025, this production brought back a childlike sense of wonder I didn’t realize I was missing.

From the moment I walked into the theater, I knew I was in for a whimsical ride. The set immediately transported me “down the rabbit hole” — vibrant colors, playful designs, and a stage that seemed alive with anticipation. Unlike other shows that ease you in slowly, Alice in Wonderland pulls you right into the magic with a mix of music, movement, and larger-than-life characters.

My Experience & Thoughts

What I loved most about this production was how it balanced nostalgia with creativity. We all grew up knowing Alice, the Mad Hatter, and the Queen of Hearts, but seeing them brought to life by such a talented Filipino cast made the story feel new again.

The music by Janet Yates Vogt and Mark Friedman was catchy and playful, perfectly matched with Joy Virata and Cara Barredo’s direction. I also have to give a shout-out to the choreography — watching the tap-dancing playing cards was a highlight for me. Costume-wise, Hershee Tantiado and Phillip Domingo’s designs deserve all the love; every detail added to the magic, from Alice’s classic dress to the Queen of Hearts’ dramatic ensemble.

But what really struck me was how Alice in Wonderland wasn’t just for kids. Sure, it’s a Repertory Theater for Young Audiences (RTYA) show, but adults in the crowd were equally enchanted.

I found myself laughing at Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum’s antics, tearing up a little with the Mock Turtle’s melancholy song, and snapping photos (with permission!) of the dazzling stage projections by GA Fallarme.

If you’re looking for a break from the daily grind — whether you’re a parent wanting to treat your kids, a tita who loves musicals, or just someone craving a colorful escape — Alice in Wonderland at REP Eastwood Theater is the perfect getaway. It’s fun, family-friendly, and full of heart.

Take it from me: you don’t need to look for a rabbit hole to find magic. Sometimes, it’s right here in the city, waiting for you at the theater.
