Philippine Program Wins Global Grant for Pet-Assisted Trauma Care

Friday, July 03, 2026

The healing power of pets goes beyond companionship. Around the world, trained therapy animals are increasingly being recognized for helping people recover from trauma, reduce stress, and improve emotional well-being. Now, a Philippine initiative is receiving global recognition for using the human-animal bond to support trauma survivors and the professionals who care for them.

The Philippine Human-Animal Bond Institute (PHABI), the nonprofit organization behind Communitails, has been awarded a grant from the Royal Canin Foundation to expand Brave Tails, an innovative trauma-informed animal-assisted services program. The recognition marks a historic milestone, making Brave Tails the first initiative from the Philippines and Southeast Asia to receive funding from the Foundation.

Brave Tails Brings Animal-Assisted Care to Trauma Recovery

Recovering from trauma often requires more than medical treatment. Survivors of abuse, violence, and exploitation frequently face long-term emotional and psychological challenges, while caregivers and frontline workers are also at risk of burnout and secondary trauma.

Brave Tails was created to address these challenges through structured interactions with trained therapy animals. The program offers safe, supportive spaces where both survivors and care providers can experience emotional healing while strengthening resilience.

By combining trauma-informed practices with animal-assisted services, the initiative promotes recovery in a way that nurtures both people and animals.

Healing Through the Human-Animal Bond

At the heart of Brave Tails is the belief that healing can happen through meaningful connections between people and animals.

According to Rohani Navarro, President of the Philippine Human-Animal Bond Institute, the program is designed to benefit everyone involved.

"Designed around the principle of mutual healing, Brave Tails uplifts the well-being of all participants, such as survivors, care providers, therapy animals, and their human stewards. By cultivating a practice of caring for animals, self, and others, the initiative creates emotionally safe, brave, and restorative spaces that promote trust, belonging, and meaning."

Rather than focusing solely on therapy for trauma survivors, Brave Tails also supports the emotional well-being of caregivers, recognizing that sustainable care begins with healthy support systems.

Royal Canin Foundation Recognizes the Philippine Initiative

The Royal Canin Foundation supports projects worldwide that demonstrate the positive impact of cats and dogs on human health and welfare, as well as initiatives involving search and rescue dogs.

Each year, organizations undergo a rigorous evaluation process that considers project impact, sustainability, feasibility, and animal welfare standards before receiving funding.

For 2026, the Foundation selected projects addressing a wide range of human health needs, including support programs for war-affected communities in Ukraine, therapeutic animal-assisted interventions for elderly care in Spain, and cat-assisted therapy for hospitalized children in Italy.

The inclusion of Brave Tails alongside these international initiatives highlights the growing recognition of the Philippines' contribution to trauma-informed care.

Carlos Andres-Luna, President of the Royal Canin Foundation, shared the importance of supporting programs like Brave Tails.

"At the Royal Canin Foundation, we support initiatives that highlight the role of pets in human health and welfare. Brave Tails is a strong example of how the human-animal bond can meaningfully support wellbeing in sensitive contexts."

Expanding Mental Health Support in the Philippines

With support from the Foundation's grant, PHABI plans to expand Brave Tails to reach more trauma survivors and care providers across the country.

The funding will also strengthen evidence-based, trauma-informed animal-assisted services while helping establish sustainable models that can benefit communities for years to come.

The program builds on PHABI's broader work through Communitails, which promotes the human-animal bond across healthcare, education, and community settings while advocating responsible and ethical animal care.

A Shared Commitment to People and Pets

The grant also strengthens the ongoing partnership between Royal Canin Philippines and Communitails, both of which have collaborated on community education initiatives promoting empathy, responsible pet ownership, and the positive role of companion animals in society.

Past projects have included storybook reading activities and public education campaigns that encourage compassionate relationships between people and pets.

According to Gerard Poa, Market Head of Royal Canin Philippines, the recognition is a proud milestone for the country.

"Our partnership with Communitails reflects a shared commitment to both human and animal wellbeing. We are proud to see a Philippines-led initiative gain global recognition and support through this grant."

A Milestone for Animal-Assisted Therapy in the Philippines

As conversations around mental health continue to grow, innovative approaches like animal-assisted services are gaining attention for their ability to complement traditional care.

The international recognition of Brave Tails demonstrates how the human-animal bond can become a valuable part of trauma recovery while promoting responsible pet care and community well-being.

More importantly, it places the Philippines on the global map for pioneering programs that recognize healing as a shared journey between people, animals, and the communities that support them.
