Why Mel Gibson’s ‘The Passion of the Christ’ Still Resonates, 21 Years Later

The Passion of the Christ

Pause and contemplate the ultimate sacrifice this Holy Week with the powerful Passion of the Christ.

Holy Week is a time of deep spiritual reflection for many Filipinos. It’s an opportunity to pause and step back from the demands of our busy lives and contemplate the profound meaning of this sacred time. Beyond the traditions and rituals, Holy Week calls us to a personal introspection on the enduring themes of sacrifice, redemption, and the power of faith.

During this period, The Passion of the Christe merges as a compelling reminder of the immense suffering and ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. Directed by Mel Gibson and based on Anne Catherine Emmerich’s book, The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, this film is an intense portrayal of the final twelve hours of Jesus Christ’s life, from his agony in the Garden of Gethsemane to his crucifixion and resurrection. It’s a testament to the betrayal, pain, and ultimate offering Jesus bore for the very people he came to redeem.

Gibson recounted how his inspiration for creating the film arose from a period of intense personal struggle, a “spiritual bankruptcy” that prompted him to turn towards the Bible for guidance. Although already familiar with the foundations of Christian belief, meditating on the Gospel in his time of need renewed his faith.

Gibson’s experience might resonate deeply with the Filipino experience, as a society deeply rooted in religious belief and familiar with the story of Christ’s passion. We grew up surrounded by films, drawings, sculptures, and various art forms dedicated to narrating and understanding the man from Nazareth, but reading historical accounts is often not enough for us to understand the gravity of Christ’s sacrifice.

From Caleb Deschanel’s artistic cinematography and John Debney’s moving score to Jim Caviezel’s profoundly moving performance as Christ, The Passion of the Christ makes it difficult for viewers to take their eyes off the screen at any given moment. No matter what you’re looking for this Holy Week, Gibson’s film delivers a visceral, theological, and artistic experience that resonates even today, 21 years after it premiered.

Speaking to Sight Magazine, director Mel Gibson shared what impact he hoped the film would have on its viewers: “I hope it spurs them on to investigate the life of Christ for themselves. And I don’t think you can’t be impacted by it. Some of the images are really strong, and I’ve decided not to hold back. Jim Caviezel (the actor who plays Jesus) said it really well. He said there will be some people that it will freak out…(b)ut there will be other people who can’t stop watching it, and even though they are horrified and terrified by it they will sit through the whole thing…By speaking very loudly, image and sound wise, it’s going to make people think very deeply.”

Gibson is also planning to film a sequel entitled Resurrection, with the hope of releasing it in the near future. This follow-up aims to explore the events after Christ's crucifixion, delving further into the heart of Christian belief.

The Passion of the Christ will stream on Lionsgate Play PH via PLDT Home and Smart starting Maundy Thursday, April 17, 2025.

Everything You Need to Know Before Watching POWER BOOK III: RAISING KANAN S4

Power Book III: Raising Kanan

Power Book III: Raising Kanan returns to Lionsgate Play with yet another exciting season featuring more betrayal, ambition, and electrifying drama than ever before!

Are you ready to re-enter the gritty streets of Southside Jamaica, Queens, where loyalty, power, and betrayal rule the day? Power Book III: Raising Kanan has returned for another electrifying season, and things are about to get even more intense. Whether you're a die-hard fan of the Power franchise or a newcomer curious about the buzz, here's everything you need to know before catching up on Season 4, which is coming soon to Lionsgate Play.

What Is Power Book III?

Power Book III is a gripping prequel to the Power universe, created by Sascha Penn. Set in the 1990s, it explores the origins of Kanan Stark (played by Mekai Curtis) and his rise in the dangerous drug trade. Guided—and sometimes manipulated—by his fierce and calculating mother, Raquel "Raq" Thomas (Patina Miller), Kanan learns that the pursuit of power often comes at a brutal cost.

The series is more than just a crime drama; it’s an exploration of family dynamics, ambition, and the lengths people go to in order to survive. If you loved the original Power, this prequel delivers all the same nail-biting tension with a nostalgic twist.

Do You Need to Watch Power First?

One of the most frequent questions about Raising Kanan is whether you need to watch the original Power to understand it. The answer? Not necessarily. Power Book III stands firmly on its own, offering a self-contained story that dives deeply into Kanan's early life. However, if you're familiar with the original series, viewing Kanan's backstory in Raising Kanan will add layers of depth to key moments in his adult life.

For newcomers, Power Book III is an excellent starting point into the universe.

Season 3 Recap – What You Need to Know

Before jumping into Season 4, here’s a quick rundown of Season 3’s key events:

A Fractured Family: Raq’s attempts to leave the drug business fail miserably as her estranged relationships with her brothers Marvin and Lou-Lou, as well as her son Kanan, spiral further out of control. By the season finale, Raq has fully reclaimed her role as the leader of her drug empire, but her family ties are hanging by a thread.

Kanan’s Betrayal: Kanan’s resentment toward Raq reaches its boiling point. He stages his own kidnapping to extort money from her, taking a step further into darkness as he grows his own heroin operation—and eventually turns into his mother’s competitor.

Unique’s Tragic End: Unique’s rivalry with his brother Ronnie turns deadly, culminating in his brutal death. But a jaw-dropping twist reveals that Unique isn’t finished yet—stay tuned.

Raq’s Survival Instincts: By the end of last season, Raq has fought her way back to power, proving once again that she will stop at nothing to maintain control. Her ruthless decisions, including shocking betrayals, have left her isolated from her family, yet stronger than ever.

Season 3 set the stage for explosive consequences in Season 4—and trust us, you don’t want to miss what comes next.

Mark your calendars for April 11, when the first four episodes of Season 4 of Power Book III drop on Lionsgate Play.

Ben&Ben takes flight with “Saranggola,” a tender ode to friendship and nostalgia

Friday, April 11, 2025

The barkada-themed track premiered this week on Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition

Fresh off the success of their heartfelt ballad “Tomorrow With You,” Ben&Ben returns with “Saranggola,” a moving tribute to the enduring power of friendship amidst life’s inevitable changes.

Exploring themes of nostalgia, emotional connection, and change, the anthemic song reflects on cherished moments shared with friends, while acknowledging the inevitability of growing apart. But amidst shifting seasons and distances, the track affirms how love and respect remain steadfast.

“Saranggola is inspired by the ever-changing seasons amongst a group of friends,” Ben&Ben shares in a collective statement. “It is about the fleeting nature of youth and the reality that while we may not always be ready for change, we eventually learn to embrace it. What has passed becomes something worth appreciating, both in the present and in hindsight.”

The song made its debut this week in an episode of Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition and will be featured in the upcoming deluxe edition of The Traveller Across Dimensions, set for release in 2025.

Written by Paolo Benjamin and Miguel Benjamin, and arranged and produced by the whole band in collaboration with long-time friend and producer Ziv, “Saranggola” marks a graceful return to form: reminiscent of their earlier works, yet imbued with the artistic depth and growth that they’ve nurtured over the years.

The multi-awarded band takes a minimalist approach at the outset with just an acoustic guitar, a cajon, and all nine members singing in unison, before gradually building into a soaring, guitar-driven jam worthy of a barkada sing-along.

“Coming from just having recorded and worked on a whole album, the experience of working on this song came by fairly smoothly,” the band explains. “Everyone focused on their own experience of what this song means to them, while maintaining a balance between melancholy, nostalgia, energy, and grit.”

Beyond the music, the track holds deep personal meaning for Ben&Ben. As they describe it, the song symbolizes their shared journey of “listening to the winds of fate and grasping the present moment.”

The nine-piece collective adds, “It's a reflection of the years we've spent together thus far and a reminder of the importance of every now and then going back to and rediscovering your roots.”

Ben&Ben’s “Saranggola” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment. Keep an eye out for the release of the song's visualizer on the band's official YouTube channel at 6 pm.

YARA Embraces R&B and Urban Pop in Bold New Era with “Sabi Ko Na”

YARA

YARA steps boldly into a new era with a new sound that fuses Y2K nostalgia with modern hip-hop and R&B flavor. This time, the Filipino girl group leans into urban music with an unmistakably Pinoy flair, as evident in “Sabi Ko Na,” composed by JRoa and produced by Yung Bawal.

Characterized by lush melodies, hook-laden beats, and Darkchild-style atmospherics, the song finds YARA at their most confident—delivering attitude and sonic sophistication in equal measure.

Reintroducing themselves as a force in the Filipino R&B/hip-hop realm, YARA trades polished pop for a more sultry, expressive sound.

“This song was heavily inspired by 2000s R&B, expressing raw emotions as they are—no deep words, no hidden meanings, just pure feeling,” the group shares. “We also wanted to highlight the unpleasant emotions, as they, too, are a part of us and shape who we are.”

For this new sonic revamp, YARA enlisted the expertise of award-winning producer, songwriter, and recording artist JRoa, who crafted an effortlessly smooth, soul-infused anthem about love, deception, and the unnecessary baggage that comes with it. Although YARA wasn’t directly involved in the songwriting process, their synergy with JRoa was spot on. “One of the most memorable moments during recording was the pep talk he gave that day,” recalls the four-member act. ‘It really showed his passion and, of course, inspired us to keep pushing for what we love. Every time he demonstrated how to sing a line, we couldn't help but be in awe. We were fangirling the entire time, but we had to snap back to reality and focus on channeling that energy into a performance.

The result is a captivating mix of past and present—a song that honors classic R&B elements while redefining YARA’s musical identity. With Yung Bawal’s moody, after-hours production setting the stage, “Sabi Ko Na” succeeds in reclaiming the Filipino girl group’s space where they can truly shine.

“It’s not always easy to admit to yourself that someone special has fooled you, so we hope this song serves as both a reminder and a source of comfort—because, let’s be real, it’s a canon event,” the charismatic quartet reflects. “Kidding aside, we just want to be part of someone’s moving-on journey, and hopefully, this song helps them heal in the end.”

Earlier this week, YARA sparked intrigue with a social media blackout, signaling a pivot in their influence style not just for this particular release, but also for their overall sound and artist positioning moving forward. This move set the stage for the launch of “Sabi Ko Na,” a track that reintroduces the group as the next movers and shakers in the local R&B/hip-hop scene. Taking creative direction into their own hands, YARA delivers a bold and infectious banger that is rife with so much promise. “You can definitely expect more of this sound,” the group explains. “We had the best time creating Sabi Ko Na, and we can’t wait for you to enjoy it as much as we did.”

YARA’s “Sabi Ko Na” is now available on digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment. Watch out for the track’s lyric video, which will be released today at 6 pm on their official YouTube channel.

The music video will also premiere on April 11 at 6 pm via the group’s official YouTube channel.

JERGE joins Spotify RADAR Philippines 2025, releases new single “Kalul’wa”

JERGE

The track captures the sound of quiet isolation, trauma, and healing

Rising artist JERGE proves that he’s more than just a viral sensation. Known for his comedy skits on TikTok, the multi-talented artist continues to expand his portfolio as a recording star, earning a coveted spot in Spotify RADAR Philippines Class of 2025. This achievement places him alongside the esteemed ranks of emerging Filipino artists, including Dilaw, Ena Mori, BGYO, ONE CLICK STRAIGHT, Costa Cashman, and more.

Expressing his disbelief and gratitude, JERGE took to Instagram to reflect on his journey. “Music has been my way to tell a story, express my emotions, and connect with people since day one. And now, with Spotify and the RADAR program, I get to share my world with even more listeners.”

With these recent developments, JERGE remains steadfast in his creative pursuit, recently unveiling his new single “Kalul’wa,” under evosound PH. Delicately woven with ethereal vocals and somber acoustic instrumentation, the song essays the lingering weight of past traumas and the painful yet necessary process of moving forward.

Rooted in personal experience, JERGE describes the track as a deeply confessional piece. “With everything I've been through these past few years, I've realized that there are really things you need to leave behind no matter how much you love them,” he shares. “Kalul’wa is about accepting that not everything is meant to stay; sometimes we just need to let go to protect our peace.”

Produced by Paulo Agudelo, the track carries a sense of warmth and solace, subtly embracing the listener with its cinematic sound. However, bringing “Kalul’wa” to life was not without challenges.

“Before we could even begin recording, I didn’t have a guitar to compose freely. I had to rely on MIDI from my laptop to create the demo,” JERGE recalls. “Once the demo was finalized, I worked with Sir Paulo Agudelo in the studio, where we recorded the instrumentals and vocals.”

Marked by an evocative sense of quiet isolation, “Kalul’wa” embodies both pain and healing: piercing yet tender, sorrowful yet cathartic.

JERGE’s “Kalul’wa” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via evosound PH.

Collaborative Step Towards A Sustainable Urban Development

San Juan Urban Renewal Project

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the City of San Juan, and Barangay Batis have officially signed a tripartite Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the San Juan Urban Renewal Project, a landmark initiative aimed at transforming waterway easements along the San Juan River into vibrant, sustainable linear parks.

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora

The MOA signing and groundbreaking ceremony, led by MMDA Chairman Atty. Romando Artes, San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora, and Barangay Batis Captain Dino Geneston, underscores the collaborative effort to enhance urban spaces and mitigate environmental challenges.

“This tripartite agreement exemplifies the power of collaboration between national, city, and barangay levels,” San Juan Mayor Zamora stated. “By working together with the MMDA and Barangay Batis, we are creating a sustainable model for urban development that prioritizes both environmental protection and community well-being.”

A Vision for Sustainable Urban Transformation

The San Juan Urban Renewal Project is part of the Metro Manila Flood Management Project (MMFMP) and is designed to enhance urban spaces through nature-based solutions.

The initiative will convert unused river easements into functional green spaces, improve solid waste management, and introduce flood control measures to reduce pollution and mitigate urban flooding.

According to MMDA Chairman Artes, the project will incorporate green infrastructure and flood-resilient systems, making it a model for sustainable urban development.

“This project is more than just beautification; it’s a commitment to sustainability. The linear park will feature rainwater harvesting systems, filtration mechanisms, and eco-friendly design elements that will improve water quality and flood management,” MMDA Chairman Artes explained. “This is just the beginning—we aim to implement similar projects throughout Metro Manila as part of a holistic strategy for urban resilience.”

The linear park will feature gardens, walking paths, community spaces, and crucial environmental safeguards such as rainwater harvesting systems and trash traps to prevent waste from entering the San Juan River.

Alignment with National Priorities and Community Engagement

The San Juan Urban Renewal Project aligns with the national government’s Pasig River Urban Development Project, championed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos, which aims to restore Metro Manila’s waterways.

“Through this collaborative initiative, we are setting a precedent for sustainable urban planning,” MMDA Chairman Artes emphasized. “We envision a Metro Manila where communities thrive within green, flood-resilient environments.”

Community involvement is paramount to the project’s success. Residents and stakeholders in Barangay Batis and Barangay San Perfecto will play a vital role in maintaining the linear park, ensuring its long-term sustainability and integration into the community.

Congresswoman Bel Zamora reiterated San Juan’s commitment to the project’s long-term sustainability, “San Juan is ready to embrace this transformation. We are committed to ensuring that this linear park, and the many projects to come, will be well-maintained and maximized for the benefit of our constituents”.

A Model for Future Urban Development

With the groundbreaking ceremony initiating construction, the MMDA, San Juan City, and Barangay Batis are optimistic that this project will serve as a blueprint for other cities.

“We hope to see this project serve as a model for other cities,” MMDA Chairman Artes concluded. “By integrating environmental protection, urban design, and flood control, we can create more sustainable and livable communities throughout Metro Manila.”

The San Juan Urban Renewal Project signifies a collective commitment to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future, demonstrating the power of intergovernmental and community collaboration in achieving urban development goals.

Refreshing Fun: Leron Leron Sinta and Vita Coco's Prank at Rizal Park

Wednesday, April 09, 2025

Rizal Park recently became the stage for a unique and hilarious prank courtesy of Vita Coco, in partnership with creative agency Leron Leron Sinta. Instead of a typical product sampling, the brand staged a lighthearted prank that left parkgoers both entertained and refreshed.

The “Vita Coco-riton” stunt began innocently enough, inviting people to try Vita Coco's coconut water. However, the "payment" request – a playful suggestion to shave their heads inspired by the infamous gupit buko – sparked a wave of amused disbelief. Many took the initial offer in stride, while others hesitated, leading to some comical moments. A staged, theatrical confrontation added to the absurdity of the scene, culminating in the reveal that it was all a lighthearted prank captured on camera.

The fun didn't stop there. Participants were then offered a blind taste test: fresh coconut water versus Vita Coco from a bottle. The challenge proved surprisingly difficult, with many struggling to distinguish between the two. The reveal – cracking open a coconut to find a Vita Coco bottle inside – highlighted the authentic taste of Vita Coco.

Vita Coco offers a simple, refreshing drink made from 100% natural coconut water, free from artificial additives. It's a straightforward way to enjoy the taste of coconut, perfect for the summer season.
