SM Pickleball Opens Six New Courts at SM City East Ortigas

Tuesday, October 13, 2026

Players and guests at the opening of SM Pickleball's six new courts at SM City East Ortigas.

SM Pickleball has expanded to SM City East Ortigas with six new courts, bringing its nationwide total to 108 courts across 33 SM malls.

Finding time to stay active can be easier when there's a fun activity to enjoy with friends and family. For Filipinos looking for a sport that combines movement, friendly competition, and social connection, pickleball is becoming an increasingly popular option.

SM Pickleball is bringing the sport to more communities with the opening of six new courts at SM City East Ortigas. The addition raises the number of SM Pickleball courts nationwide to 108 across 33 SM malls, strengthening its position as the country's largest pickleball destination.

The new facility officially opened on September 25 with an open-play session attended by celebrities and SM executives.

SM Pickleball Brings More Playing Space to East Ortigas

Located at SM City East Ortigas, the new facility gives players in the eastern part of Metro Manila another place to discover pickleball, practice their skills, or enjoy a friendly match.

The six-court facility caters to both beginners and experienced players. Whether someone is trying the sport for the first time or already enjoys regular games, the courts offer a dedicated space to get moving and spend time with others.

For those who prefer a more private setting, the facility also has a dedicated private court. This option can accommodate exclusive games with family, friends, colleagues, or fellow pickleball enthusiasts.

The opening event brought together celebrities known to enjoy the sport, including Anna Clarice Patrimonio, Cherry Pie Picache, Nikki Valdez, Diana Zubiri, Eruption, Andy Smith, Mark Solis, Meg Imperial, Carlene Aguilar, Inez Veneracion, Vince Abrenica, and Sophie Albert.

They joined Ronald Allan Brosas, senior assistant vice president for operations of SM Supermalls, and Joseph Francis Silva, senior assistant vice president of SM Sports & Leisure Centers, for the open-play event.

More Than a Game: Making Active Living Social

Part of pickleball's appeal is that it offers an opportunity to be active while spending quality time with other people. A game can bring together friends, family members, coworkers, and even people meeting for the first time.

That social element makes the sport an appealing option for those who want to add more movement to their routines without making exercise feel like another chore.

SM Sports & Leisure is positioning its pickleball facilities as spaces where communities can develop an interest in the sport, build friendships, and enjoy recreational activities together.

“Expanding SM Pickleball to East Ortigas is all about making the sport accessible and bringing it closer to home,” said Joseph Francis Silva, senior assistant vice president of SM Sports & Leisure Centers.

“Beyond building courts, we're creating a welcoming space across Metro Manila where players of all skill levels can come together, build lasting friendships, and help grow the pickleball community,” Silva added.

With six additional courts at SM City East Ortigas, more players have another option for incorporating sport and social time into their leisure days.

Helping Children With Aggressive Behavior: A Parent’s Guide

Parent talking calmly with a child in a supportive home environment.

When a child repeatedly lashes out, bullies others, or struggles to control anger, parents may find themselves wondering what went wrong. Should they be stricter? Is their child dealing with an emotional problem? And when does aggressive behavior call for professional help?

According to Constantine L. Yu Chua, MD, a child and adolescent psychiatry specialist at Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed), there is no single explanation for violence among children and teenagers. Biological, psychological, and social factors can all play a role, making it important to understand each child's circumstances rather than assume that one cause explains everything.

For parents, the challenge is to recognize concerning behavior early, establish clear boundaries, and help children develop healthier ways to manage emotions. Professional support can be important, but parents, teachers, family members, and other trusted adults also have a role in helping young people feel supported and accountable for their actions.

Why Do Some Children and Teenagers Become Aggressive?

Aggressive behavior can develop for different reasons. A child may struggle with frustration, act out after experiencing bullying, or have difficulty managing intense emotions. In other cases, a mental health condition or an unsafe home or school environment may contribute.

Dr. Yu Chua identifies several factors that may influence aggressive behavior.

Biological and mental health factors. Some conditions can affect mood, judgment, impulse control, or how a young person interprets social situations. However, having a mental health condition does not automatically make a child violent.

Psychological factors. Difficulty regulating emotions, solving problems, considering consequences, or understanding another person's perspective can make conflict harder to manage. Persistent hostility, hopelessness, and the belief that other people are enemies may also warrant attention.

Social and environmental factors. Children who experience bullying, abuse, or repeated exposure to violence may come to see aggression as an acceptable way to respond to conflict. A lack of supportive relationships can also leave them with fewer healthy ways to cope.

Online influences and access to weapons. Digital environments can expose young people to harmful interactions and content. The influence of media and games, however, should not be assumed to explain an individual child's behavior without evidence. Access to weapons is also an important safety concern because it can make a threat more dangerous.

These factors do not guarantee that a child will become violent. Supportive relationships, a sense of belonging, positive role models, and timely intervention can help protect young people and encourage healthier behavior.

What Warning Signs Should Parents Look For?

Children and teenagers can become angry or defiant at times. A single argument or emotional outburst does not necessarily indicate a serious behavioral problem.

Parents should pay closer attention when concerning behaviors become repeated, more intense, or increasingly difficult to manage.

According to Dr. Yu Chua, potential warning signs include a pattern of conduct problems, such as bullying, stealing, vandalism, and substance use. Persistent aggression and difficulty responding to appropriate boundaries may also require closer attention.

Parents should take particular care when a child:

  • Repeatedly threatens, intimidates, or physically harms others.
  • Bullies classmates or appears to take pleasure in another person's distress.
  • Expresses a specific intention to hurt someone, whether in person or online.
  • Has frequent, intense outbursts and struggles to regain control.
  • Shows a pattern of increasingly risky or destructive behavior.
  • Says they need help managing their thoughts, feelings, or actions.

These signs are not a diagnosis. They are reasons to understand what is happening and consider whether additional support is needed.

A child's willingness to talk about having a problem should also be taken seriously. Young people may recognize that they are struggling before they know how to ask for help.

What if a child threatens to hurt someone? Take the statement seriously, remain calm, and focus on safety rather than dismissing it as attention-seeking. If there is an immediate threat, a weapon, or a credible plan to harm someone, keep others safe and contact emergency services. Do not wait for a routine appointment when someone may be in danger.

How Can Parents Discipline a Child Without Making Things Worse?

Dr. Yu Chua recommends an approach he calls “connect and correct.” The idea is to understand a child's feelings while still holding them responsible for harmful behavior.

Connecting means listening to what the child is experiencing without immediately dismissing their emotions. Correcting means setting clear expectations, explaining the consequences of harmful actions, and helping the child learn what to do differently.

For example, a parent might say: “I can see that you were angry when your classmate said that. But hitting someone is not acceptable. Let's talk about what you can do next time.”

This response recognizes the emotion without excusing the action.

Parents can put the approach into practice in several ways.

1. Listen before reacting.

When everyone is safe, give the child a chance to explain what happened. Ask open-ended questions about what they felt, what triggered the incident, and what they thought would happen next.

Listening does not mean agreeing with every explanation. It helps parents understand the behavior so they can respond more effectively.

2. Set clear and consistent boundaries.

Explain which behaviors are unacceptable and what consequences will follow. Consequences should be proportionate, predictable, and focused on accountability and learning rather than humiliation.

3. Reinforce positive behavior.

Notice when a child handles frustration calmly, resolves a disagreement without aggression, or takes responsibility for a mistake. Specific praise can help reinforce the behaviors parents want to see more often.

4. Teach practical ways to manage anger.

Children can learn to pause before reacting, step away from a heated situation, use words to express frustration, and ask a trusted adult for help. These skills often need repeated practice.

5. Model the behavior you expect.

Children observe how adults respond to stress and conflict. Parents who manage disagreements without threats, intimidation, or physical punishment demonstrate healthier ways to deal with difficult emotions.

Understanding a child's feelings is not the same as excusing harmful actions. Empathy and accountability can work together.

When Should Parents Seek Professional Help?

Professional help may be appropriate when aggressive behavior is persistent, escalating, affects relationships or school performance, or seems beyond what the family can manage safely.

A child and adolescent psychiatrist can assess the young person's emotional and behavioral concerns, developmental history, family circumstances, and possible underlying conditions.

Dr. Yu Chua explains that a psychiatric evaluation may involve clinical interviews and, when appropriate, psychological assessments or medical tests to investigate possible contributing factors.

Treatment depends on the individual child's needs. Options may include counseling, psychotherapy, family-based support, behavioral interventions, and medication when clinically indicated.

No single treatment works for every child. A professional assessment helps determine which approaches are appropriate and whether different forms of support should be combined.

Parents should also involve the child's school when appropriate, particularly if the behavior involves bullying, threats, or repeated conflict with classmates. Teachers and school counselors may be able to identify patterns, help establish consistent expectations, and support a coordinated response.

Seeking help is not an admission of parental failure. It is a step toward understanding what a child needs and preventing problems from becoming more serious.

Why Do Children Need Support From More Than Their Parents?

Helping a child change harmful behavior rarely falls on one person alone. Parents can provide stability at home, but teachers, relatives, counselors, health professionals, and other trusted adults may also play important roles.

A supportive network can help children experience consistent expectations across different settings. It can also give parents guidance when they feel overwhelmed or unsure how to respond.

Dr. Yu Chua emphasizes the importance of modeling healthy behavior and building relationships in which young people feel loved, supported, and able to discuss their problems.

Giving children opportunities to contribute, help others, develop interests, and experience success can also encourage a sense of purpose and belonging.

These steps do not guarantee that aggressive behavior will disappear. They can, however, form part of a broader effort to help children build emotional skills, healthier relationships, and safer ways to handle conflict.

Helping a Child Begins With Understanding, Not Fear

Aggressive behavior in children and teenagers deserves attention, particularly when it becomes persistent or involves threats and harm to others. But labeling a child as bad or dangerous without understanding the circumstances can make it harder to identify the support they need.

The goal is not to excuse violence or remove consequences. It is to protect those at risk while helping the child understand their actions, develop self-control, and learn healthier ways to respond.

As Dr. Yu Chua's guidance suggests, meaningful change requires both connection and accountability. With appropriate professional care and support from the adults around them, children who struggle with behavior can have a better opportunity to learn, grow, and make safer choices.

ASUS Zenbook 14 Arrives in the Philippines With New Colors and AI Features

A laptop can be powerful and still be a burden to carry every day. ASUS is addressing that balance with its latest ASUS Zenbook 14, which launched in the Philippines on October 7, 2026, with prices starting at ₱76,995.

The new Zenbook 14 lineup comes in three processor configurations: Intel, AMD, and Snapdragon. It combines a lightweight design starting at 1.1kg with ASUS-exclusive Ceraluminum materials, AI-focused computing features, and new color options designed for users who want their everyday technology to reflect their personal style.

For Filipino professionals, students, and frequent travelers, the appeal goes beyond a slimmer laptop. The choice of processor, battery life, display configuration, and connectivity will help determine which version makes the most sense for everyday work and entertainment.

How Much Does the ASUS Zenbook 14 Cost in the Philippines?

ASUS Philippines announced the following introductory prices for the new Zenbook 14 series.

  • Zenbook 14 UX3480AA Intel Core Ultra, up to Series 3 Core Ultra 9 ₱106,995
  • Zenbook 14 UX3480KA AMD Ryzen AI, up to Ryzen AI 7 345 ₱86,995
  • Zenbook 14 UX3480QA Snapdragon X ₱76,995

The new lineup became available nationwide through official ASUS Exclusive Stores starting October 7, 2026. The listed prices are introductory prices, so buyers should confirm current offers and final configurations with authorized stores.

The Intel version is the most expensive option, while the Snapdragon model has the lowest starting price. The AMD version sits between the two.

That price difference makes it worth checking the specifications of each configuration before deciding. Processor performance, software compatibility, battery needs, and the specific display fitted to a local unit can matter more than choosing a laptop based on price or color alone.

What Makes the New Zenbook 14 Different?

A lightweight design with a distinctive finish

The Zenbook 14 weighs as little as 1.1kg and uses an all-metal chassis. Its compact build is intended for people who regularly move between home, the office, school, cafés, and other workspaces.

One of its defining features is Ceraluminum, an ASUS-exclusive material used on the laptop lid. It combines a ceramic-like tactile finish with durability features designed to resist scratches, smudges, and everyday wear.

ASUS describes the material as part of a longer-term design approach: creating a laptop that maintains its appearance as it ages rather than focusing only on how it looks when new.

The new Zenbook 14 comes in three nature-inspired colors: Arctic Blue, Komodo Coral, and Zabriskie Beige. However, availability varies by processor configuration.

For users who carry a laptop throughout the day, a lightweight body and a finish that can withstand regular handling are practical considerations. The actual experience will still depend on how the device is transported and maintained.

Battery life designed for mobile work

ASUS claims the new Zenbook 14 can deliver up to 33 hours of battery life, alongside fast charging and a compact USB-C charger.

That figure is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee of how long every user can work between charges. Battery performance can vary depending on the processor, screen brightness, applications, connectivity, and workload.

For someone who regularly works away from a power outlet, battery life can influence how comfortably a laptop fits into a daily routine. Those who frequently join video calls, edit photos, or use demanding applications should look for independent battery tests under similar conditions.

An OLED display for work and entertainment

Selected local configurations feature an ASUS OLED display with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a screen-to-body ratio of up to 89%.

The taller 16:10 format offers more vertical screen space than a traditional 16:9 display of the same width. That can be useful when reading documents, editing spreadsheets, browsing websites, or working with longer pages.

OLED technology can also deliver deep blacks and strong contrast, making it appealing for watching films and viewing photos. Exact display specifications may vary by configuration, so buyers should check the resolution, refresh rate, brightness, and other panel details for their preferred model.

The laptop also includes dual speakers with Dolby Atmos, a backlit keyboard, and a larger touchpad with smart gestures.

How Do the Intel, AMD, and Snapdragon Models Compare?

The three Zenbook 14 versions offer different processor platforms, each with dedicated hardware for AI-related tasks.

  • Intel UX3480AA Up to 50 TOPS NPU performance Software support, processor performance, and workload requirements
  • AMD UX3480KA 50 TOPS NPU performance Multitasking, application support, and performance needs
  • Snapdragon UX3480QA 45 TOPS NPU performance Battery requirements, Windows on Arm compatibility, and everyday applications

TOPS stands for trillions of operations per second. In this context, it measures the potential processing capacity of a neural processing unit, or NPU, a component designed to handle certain AI workloads efficiently.

All three configurations are certified as Copilot+ PCs. These Windows computers meet Microsoft's hardware requirements for a range of AI-powered experiences, although the availability of individual features depends on the device, software, region, and updates.

An NPU can help handle supported AI tasks without relying entirely on the CPU or graphics processor. This can be useful for features such as certain creative tools, intelligent search, and video-call effects.

However, a higher TOPS figure does not automatically mean a laptop is faster at every task. Traditional applications, games, editing software, and specialized programs can depend on other hardware and software factors.

What should buyers choose? Those already committed to specific Windows applications should check compatibility first, especially before buying the Snapdragon version. Buyers comparing the Intel and AMD options should also consider independent performance tests, memory and storage configurations, and the applications they use most often.

What Connectivity and Productivity Features Does It Offer?

The Zenbook 14 includes USB-C, USB Type-A, HDMI, and a combination audio jack. This range of connections can reduce the need to carry separate adapters for common accessories and external displays.

A USB-C charger can also be useful beyond the laptop itself, depending on the charger's supported power output and the requirements of other devices.

For everyday work, these details can make a difference. Someone who regularly connects an external monitor, transfers files from older USB devices, or uses wired headphones may appreciate having the necessary ports built in.

The improved thermal system features a larger fan, refined airflow, and added dust protection. ASUS says the design supports up to 35W thermal design power, a 25% increase over the previous generation.

Thermal design power, or TDP, is a measure used to describe a processor's thermal and power-design requirements. It is not a direct measure of speed or a guarantee of sustained performance. Real-world results depend on the processor, cooling system, and workload.

ASUS ZenMouse MD202: A Matching Accessory for ₱4,995

ASUS is also introducing the ZenMouse MD202, a wireless mouse designed to complement the Zenbook series with a matching Ceraluminum top cover.

Available in Moher Gray and Scandinavian White, the mouse supports Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless connections and can connect to as many as four devices simultaneously.

Its Track-on-Glass sensor is designed to work across a range of surfaces. Users can also adjust sensitivity from 800 to 4,200 dots per inch (DPI) and assign shortcuts through the MyASUS app.

ASUS claims the rechargeable battery can last up to seven months. The company also says one minute of USB-C charging can provide up to 16 hours of use, depending on usage conditions.

The ZenMouse MD202 is scheduled to become available exclusively at ASUS Exclusive Stores in the Philippines from mid-October 2026, with a price of ₱4,995.

For people who regularly switch between a laptop and other devices, its multi-device support could be more useful than simply matching the laptop's finish. Buyers should weigh those features against their existing mouse and accessory needs.

Where Can You Buy the ASUS Zenbook 14 in the Philippines?

The new ASUS Zenbook 14 series is available through official ASUS Exclusive Stores nationwide, with the three processor configurations carrying different introductory prices and color options.

The initial color lineup is as follows:

  • Intel and AMD: Arctic Blue
  • Snapdragon: Komodo Coral
  • Snapdragon in Zabriskie Beige: Expected later in the fourth quarter of 2026

Each laptop also comes with a bundle of software and accessories, according to ASUS Philippines. The package includes an ASUS laptop sleeve, a lifetime license for Office 2024 Home, a one-year Microsoft 365 Basic subscription with 100GB of cloud storage, up to 700GB of ASUS Cloud Storage, and three months of Google AI Pro. ASUS also includes its No. 1 Quality and Service Package.

Buyers should confirm the exact bundle, subscription activation terms, storage eligibility, and warranty coverage with the retailer before purchase.

Is the ASUS Zenbook 14 Worth Considering?

The new Zenbook 14 brings together three things many laptop buyers look for: portability, a refined design, and hardware built to support newer AI-enabled computing features.

Its starting price of ₱76,995 makes the Snapdragon configuration the least expensive entry point, while the AMD and Intel models offer alternatives for buyers with different performance and compatibility requirements.

The most useful approach is to choose based on actual needs rather than specifications alone. Frequent travelers may prioritize weight and battery performance, while content creators should examine display quality and application compatibility. Professionals who depend on specific desktop software should confirm that their preferred programs run properly on their chosen processor platform.

With three processor options, new colors, and a lightweight design, the ASUS Zenbook 14 gives Philippine buyers more than one way to approach premium ultraportable computing. The right choice will depend on how well each configuration fits the work, travel, and entertainment demands of everyday life.

Kris Aquino Returns as the Queen of All Shopee

Wednesday, October 07, 2026

Before affiliate links, shopping hauls and creator storefronts became part of everyday online life, Kris Aquino was already known for sharing the things she personally liked with an audience that paid attention.

Now, that familiar relationship with product recommendations is returning to the digital shopping space.

Shopee has welcomed Aquino back as its brand ambassador, introducing her as the “Queen of All Shopee.” The partnership brings the longtime television personality into Shopee's shopping and entertainment features, including Shopee VIP, Shopee Live, short dramas and the platform's major double-digit sales events.

For Aquino, the partnership also feels personal. She says she has been a Shopee VIP subscriber since December 2025 and regularly uses the membership's shopping perks.

From product recommendations to online shopping

Aquino's influence around products has long been part of her public persona.

Whether discussing beauty, fashion, food, travel or everyday discoveries, she became known for being particular about what she liked and explaining why. The phrase “Kris Aquino-approved” eventually became shorthand for her personal recommendations.

That style of sharing predates the current creator economy, where product recommendations can be built into livestreams, affiliate links and dedicated shopping pages.

Her return to Shopee essentially brings that familiar approach into a platform designed around both shopping and entertainment.

“I’ve always enjoyed sharing the things I genuinely like, and I think people know by now that I can be very particular about my choices,” Aquino said.

She added that returning to Shopee felt natural because she already shops on the platform.

Kris Aquino joins Shopee Live

One of the more interesting parts of the partnership will be Aquino's involvement in Shopee Live, where she will share personal picks, discuss products and interact with shoppers in real time.

Unlike edited television segments or traditional product endorsements, livestream shopping puts the personality and the audience in the same space. Viewers can ask questions, react to products and follow recommendations while browsing.

Aquino appears ready to embrace that format.

“I actually think I’ll be a good live seller,” she joked, adding that she likes the unpredictability of live selling and the opportunity to respond to people in the moment.

For someone whose career has largely involved communicating directly with audiences, livestream shopping offers a different version of a familiar skill: talking about products while people are actually deciding whether to buy them.

A Shopee VIP subscriber talks about holiday shopping

Aquino is also entering the partnership as a Shopee VIP user rather than simply as a campaign personality.

She has been subscribed to Shopee VIP since December 2025 and highlighted the membership's daily 20% discount and other benefits as useful during the holiday shopping season.

“Christmas means shopping for family, friends, gifts, and of course, there are always a few things you end up wanting for yourself,” she said.

Her advice is straightforward: if you're already planning to shop, look for ways to make those purchases work harder for your budget.

Of course, shoppers should still check the current terms, participating products and applicable limits of any Shopee VIP benefit or promotion before making a purchase.

Catch her during Shopee's biggest sale events

The Queen of All Shopee will appear during some of the platform's biggest shopping dates, including the 10.10, 11.11 and 12.12 mega sales.

Aquino is expected to share product picks, react to deals and shop alongside viewers during Shopee Live.

Her debut is scheduled for later this September, with more appearances planned through the rest of the year.

The partnership is an interesting fit for an era when entertainment and shopping increasingly overlap. But for Aquino, the role is also a continuation of something audiences have seen from her for years: finding something she likes, forming an opinion about it, and telling people exactly why.

This time, the shopping cart is on Shopee.

Bossing Vic Sotto and Ninong Ry Team Up for a Hanabishi Kitchen Collab

What happens when Bossing Vic Sotto walks into Ninong Ry’s kitchen?

A Chinese feast, plenty of stories, and a conversation that offers a rare look at one of Philippine entertainment’s most enduring personalities.

The two familiar faces recently came together for a special collaboration with Hanabishi Appliances, with Ninong Ry putting his kitchen skills to work while using several Hanabishi appliances to prepare a Chinese-inspired spread for Sotto.

The episode, which is available on Ninong Ry’s YouTube channel, has already surpassed 4 million views as of the time of writing.

The collaboration comes as Hanabishi marks its 40th anniversary, bringing together two personalities who have had long-standing relationships with the appliance brand.

Ninong Ry cooks up a Chinese spread

The episode begins in the kitchen, where Ninong Ry prepares several dishes with a lineup of Hanabishi appliances.

Among them is Fried Mantou, made with the Hanabishi Professional Stand Mixer Master Series 5L HPSTMIX-50 and Food Steamer HFS85.

The Food Steamer also comes into play for the steamed fish, while Ninong Ry prepares his version of Dong Po Pork using the Hanabishi 18-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker HDIGPC-18IN1 and Hanabishi Juice Extractor HPJ750SS.

The cooking segment gives viewers a practical look at how different appliances can be used across multiple stages of preparing a meal, from mixing and steaming to pressure cooking.

For a content creator whose appeal is closely tied to approachable food and humor, the kitchen setting also provides a natural backdrop for the collaboration.

Vic Sotto talks about his entertainment journey

Once the food is ready, Sotto and Ninong Ry sit down for a conversation that goes beyond the usual celebrity appearance.

Sotto talks about his early years in show business, including how he initially entered the entertainment industry through music before moving into comedy and eventually appearing in a gag show with his brothers.

He also reflects on how comedy has changed over the years and shares memories from the early days of Eat Bulaga, which began airing in 1979.

The conversation gives viewers a glimpse into the career of a performer who has spent decades working across music, comedy, television and film.

Sotto also looks ahead to the noontime show's upcoming 50th anniversary.

A collaboration built around longevity

For Hanabishi, bringing Sotto and Ninong Ry together was particularly fitting as the Filipino appliance brand celebrates four decades in the market.

Sotto has been a Hanabishi brand ambassador for many years, while Ninong Ry has also worked with the brand on multiple occasions.

“Bossing Vic has been a brand ambassador of Hanabishi for many years already, and we have worked with Ninong Ry countless times. Bringing them together was a dream collaboration for us as we mark our 40th year,” said Cherish Ong-Chua, Hanabishi Appliances Vice President for Finance and Marketing.

During the conversation, Sotto drew a comparison between Hanabishi and Eat Bulaga, pointing to the longevity of both the brand and the television program.

“Parang Eat Bulaga ang Hanabishi,” Sotto said. “For 40 years, subok na ng buong bayan.”

He also recalled hearing from people about the durability of Hanabishi appliances and how some products have remained in use for years.

For Hanabishi, that idea of familiarity and long-term use is central to the brand's 40th-anniversary celebration.

“As we celebrate our 40th year this year, we thank all the people who have partnered with us like Bossing Vic and Ninong Ry, and everyone who has chosen Hanabishi as their ka-partner in their homes and even their offices,” Ong-Chua said.

The collaboration ultimately brings together three familiar elements of Filipino popular culture: food, comedy and the comfort of personalities audiences have followed for years.

And with millions of views already, the Bossing Vic and Ninong Ry episode appears to have found an audience well beyond the kitchen.

How to Enjoy a Long Weekend Trip With Less Travel Stress

Travelers preparing for a long weekend getaway

A long weekend can feel like a mini vacation without using another day of leave. But because the getaway is short, a little planning can make the difference between actually relaxing and spending half the trip dealing with avoidable problems.

Whether the plan is a quick beach escape, a road trip with friends, or a few days exploring another city, the goal is simple: make the most of the time you have.

That means thinking beyond the itinerary. Flights can be delayed, bags can go missing, plans can change, and unexpected expenses can quickly eat into a carefully planned travel budget.

For travelers heading overseas, one way to prepare for those possibilities is to include travel insurance in the pre-trip checklist.

Start with the essentials before you leave

The shorter the trip, the more tempting it can be to leave preparations until the last minute. But a long weekend does not leave much room for fixing problems once you're already on the road.

Before heading to the airport, check the basics: passport validity, flight details, accommodation, transportation from the airport, mobile connectivity and payment options at your destination.

It is also worth knowing what protection is available should something go wrong.

Through the GCash app, travelers can purchase GInsure's Standard International Travel Protect, with plans starting at ₱299. According to GCash, the policy can be purchased in as little as five minutes and up to two hours before a scheduled flight.

Coverage includes up to ₱500,000 in Emergency Medical Assistance, ₱50,000 in Travel Inconvenience Benefit, ₱1 million in Personal Liability Benefit and ₱1 million in Personal Accident coverage, depending on the policy and coverage level selected.

As with any insurance product, travelers should review the policy terms, exclusions, limits and eligibility requirements before purchasing.

Keep your phone connected

Losing mobile connectivity after landing can turn a simple arrival into an unnecessarily complicated one, particularly when you need to book a ride, contact your hotel or pull up directions.

A travel eSIM can eliminate the need to purchase and install a physical SIM card after arriving at your destination.

GCash Travel eSIM offers mobile data in more than 160 countries, with plans starting at ₱25. Having connectivity ready to go can make those first few hours in an unfamiliar place considerably easier.

Make payments easier abroad

Another part of travel planning that is easy to overlook is how you'll actually pay for things once you arrive.

For everyday purchases, GCash users can use Scan to Pay with Alipay+ QR codes in participating destinations. Eligible transactions may also come with discounts of up to ₱1,000, subject to applicable terms.

For contactless purchases, GCash Tap to Pay offers another way to pay, with eligible transactions offering up to ₱1,500 in discounts.

The important thing is to check the current participating merchants, destinations and promotional terms before relying on a particular offer.

Have a card for larger expenses

Cash is still useful when traveling, but carrying too much of it is not always practical.

For larger purchases and situations where cards are more convenient, GCash Cards can be used at participating merchants and ATMs locally and internationally. GCash says its cards have 0% foreign exchange fees, while transactions can be monitored through the GCash app.

That expense tracking can also be useful for keeping a long-weekend budget in check. A few restaurant meals, attraction tickets and impulse purchases can add up quickly when the trip is packed into just a few days.

Give yourself room for the unexpected

A good long-weekend itinerary should leave some breathing room.

Instead of scheduling every hour, allow extra time between flights and activities. Keep digital and physical copies of important travel documents. Have a backup payment method, and make sure someone at home knows your basic itinerary.

Travel insurance can be another part of that preparation, particularly for international trips where medical emergencies, travel disruptions or other unexpected situations could result in significant expenses.

For GInsure Travel, users can open the GCash app, go to Explore the App, select GInsure, and choose the Travel icon. After purchasing coverage, policy information can be accessed through the My GInsure tab.

The idea behind a well-planned long weekend is not to eliminate every possible problem. That's impossible. It is to prepare for the things you can reasonably anticipate so that an unexpected hiccup does not take over the entire trip.

Because when the break is only a few days long, the best souvenir is coming home feeling like you actually had a vacation.

How Gen Z Is Redefining Adulting in 2026

For Gen Z, adulting in 2026 is less about checking off a traditional list of milestones and more about figuring out what a stable, meaningful life looks like on their own terms.

Financial independence, meaningful work, better health, and eventually owning a home still matter. But for many young adults, the timeline is less straightforward. Rising everyday expenses, uncertainty about the future, and changing ideas about work have made “having it together” a moving target.

Instead of asking whether they are hitting traditional milestones at the expected age, Gen Z is increasingly asking a different question: How can I build the life I want without sacrificing everything I enjoy today?

That shift is changing what adulting looks like.

What does adulting mean to Gen Z today?

For previous generations, adulthood often came with a fairly predictable sequence: finish school, find a stable job, save money, buy a home, start a family, and prepare for retirement.

Gen Z has inherited many of those same ambitions, but the circumstances around them are different.

Young Filipinos are entering adulthood in a world where career paths are less linear, technology has changed how people work, and financial decisions increasingly have to account for immediate needs as well as long-term goals.

That does not mean Gen Z has abandoned traditional measures of success.

Research on Filipino Gen Z workers has found that financial stability remains important, while career choices are also influenced by purpose and social impact. Homeownership likewise remains an aspiration, although younger Filipinos face a different economic environment from previous generations.

The result is a broader definition of success.

A “good job” may now mean one that provides enough income while also offering flexibility, personal growth, or a sense of purpose. A healthy lifestyle may involve both exercise and protecting mental well-being. And financial independence can mean having enough flexibility to handle an unexpected expense rather than simply having a large bank balance.

Why is financial security such a big concern?

One of the biggest challenges facing Gen Z is the gap between what they want for the future and what their current income allows them to do.

A 2025 Deloitte global survey found that 52% of Gen Z respondents were living paycheck to paycheck. The survey also found that 41% worried they would not be able to retire comfortably.

These findings are global rather than specific to the Philippines, but they illustrate a broader tension facing younger workers: earning money today does not automatically translate into feeling financially secure about tomorrow.

The situation is particularly relevant in the Philippines, where household budgets can be stretched by everyday expenses, family responsibilities, housing costs, and other financial commitments.

Boston Consulting Group's research on the Filipino consumer found that only 46% of Filipinos felt prepared for a financial crisis.

For someone just beginning a career, that can make long-term planning feel difficult. Saving for a home or retirement can seem far away when the immediate priority is paying rent, transportation, food, bills, or helping family.

Is Gen Z becoming more intentional with money?

There are signs that young Filipinos are becoming more engaged with formal financial services.

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas data cited in 2026 reports showed that the share of young adults aged 15 to 19 with financial accounts, including bank accounts, e-wallets, and other transaction accounts, increased from 27% in 2021 to 34% in 2025.

The increase does not mean younger Filipinos have solved their financial challenges. Having access to an account is different from having sufficient savings, understanding financial products, or being financially prepared for emergencies.

Still, greater access can make it easier for young adults to begin developing financial habits earlier.

For Gen Z, that may mean using digital banking and e-wallets to manage everyday spending, setting aside money automatically, learning about investments, or exploring protection and savings products as their income grows.

The bigger change is that financial planning is becoming less about waiting until “later” and more about making small decisions now.

Why does wellness matter to Gen Z's version of adulting?

Money is only one part of the equation.

Gen Z also came of age during the COVID-19 pandemic, an experience that disrupted education, work, social lives, and everyday routines. That period helped push health and wellness higher on the priority list for many young consumers.

Wellness today can mean more than simply going to the gym.

It can include eating better, getting enough sleep, taking breaks from digital platforms, protecting mental well-being, and creating routines that make daily life more manageable.

That mindset also changes how young adults think about the future.

Being financially secure is useful, but so is being healthy enough to enjoy the life they are working to build.

Is homeownership still part of the Gen Z dream?

For all the talk about changing priorities, owning a home remains an aspiration for many Filipinos.

The challenge is affordability.

Younger adults may have to balance housing ambitions with student expenses, family obligations, transportation, lifestyle costs, and the realities of starting a career.

That has made the idea of homeownership more flexible.

For some, it may mean buying a condominium. For others, it could mean saving for a house later in life, purchasing property with a partner, or simply building enough financial security to make the decision when the opportunity comes.

The important point is that Gen Z does not necessarily reject traditional milestones. They are redefining the timeline for reaching them.

What can Gen Z do while working toward bigger goals?

There is no single formula for adulting, but financial planning can make long-term goals easier to approach.

A practical starting point is to separate financial goals according to timeframe:

Immediate needs: monthly expenses and essential bills
Short-term goals: emergency savings, travel, major purchases, or education
Medium-term goals: a vehicle, business, or home down payment
Long-term goals: retirement and broader financial security

This approach can help prevent every financial goal from competing for the same peso.

It also recognizes an important reality of adult life: plans need room for unexpected events.

An emergency fund, appropriate insurance coverage, and long-term savings are different financial tools, but together they can provide a stronger foundation than relying on a single solution.

Where does financial protection fit in?

For young adults who are beginning to plan beyond their immediate expenses, insurance and savings products can be part of a broader financial strategy.

EastWest Ageas, for example, offers Dream Builder, a protection-oriented product that provides guaranteed annual cash payouts of 5% and offers 10-Pay, 5-Pay, and 2-Pay payment options.

The 2-Pay option is the newest of the three payment structures and is designed for customers who prefer a shorter payment period.

As with any financial product, the details matter. Potential buyers should review the policy's benefits, conditions, charges, coverage, payment requirements, and suitability for their individual financial situation before making a decision.

The broader lesson is more important than any one product, though: financial planning does not have to begin with having a lot of money.

It can begin with understanding where your money goes, identifying what you want to protect, and deciding which goals deserve attention first.

Adulting doesn't have to follow a deadline

Perhaps the biggest difference between Gen Z's version of adulting and the traditional one is the timeline.

There is less certainty that everyone will follow the same sequence at the same age. Career changes, side businesses, delayed homeownership, flexible work arrangements, and changing lifestyle priorities are increasingly part of the picture.

That does not make Gen Z less ambitious.

If anything, it suggests that younger Filipinos are becoming more deliberate about what they consider worth pursuing.

Financial stability still matters. So do health, meaningful work, independence, and having a place to call home.

The difference is that Gen Z is trying to build those things while also making room for life as it happens.

Maybe that's what adulting looks like in 2026: not having everything figured out, but having a plan that can grow with you.

Paulino Alcántara: The Filipino Footballer Who Made History at FC Barcelona

Filipino football pioneer Paulino Alcántara during his FC Barcelona career

More than a century before Filipino footballers began making headlines on the international stage, Paulino Alcántara was already making history in Europe.

Born in Iloilo on October 7, 1896, Alcántara became one of the earliest stars of FC Barcelona and remains one of the most remarkable figures in Philippine football history. On what would have been his 130th birthday, his story offers a reminder that Filipino football talent has been reaching beyond the country's borders for generations.

His career took him from the Philippines to Barcelona, back to the Philippines to study medicine, and eventually to the football pitch again in Spain. Along the way, he represented both the Philippines and Spain and became one of Barça's most prolific scorers.

Who was Paulino Alcántara?

Paulino Alcántara Riestra was a Filipino-born footballer who became one of FC Barcelona's first major stars.

He joined Barcelona's youth setup as a teenager and made his first-team debut on February 25, 1912, when he was just 15 years old. He scored three goals in a 9-0 victory over Català Sporting Club. FC Barcelona continues to recognize him as its youngest player to appear for the first team.

That debut established the pattern for a career built around extraordinary goalscoring.

FC Barcelona currently credits Alcántara with 395 goals in 399 games across his two spells with the club. His tally remained the club's overall scoring record until Lionel Messi surpassed him in 2014.

Because football records from Alcántara's era included both competitive and friendly matches, historical Barça sources have also recorded a lower total of 369 goals in 357 matches. The difference reflects how matches and goals from that period have been classified over time.

What made Alcántara's Barcelona career remarkable?

Alcántara was not simply a prolific scorer. He became one of the first footballers to achieve genuine star status at Barcelona.

He played during the club's formative years and helped Barça win five Spanish championships and 10 Catalan championships during his career.

His powerful shooting also became part of his legend.

In 1922, while playing for Spain against France, Alcántara struck a shot so hard that it broke through the goal net. The incident earned him the nickname “El Rompe Redes,” or “the net breaker.”

For a player who came from the Philippines at a time when international football careers were far less accessible, his rise was extraordinary.

Alcántara also represented the Philippines

His connection to Philippine football went beyond his birthplace.

After returning to the Philippines in 1916 to continue his medical studies, Alcántara played for Bohemian Sporting Club and helped the team win Philippine championships in 1917 and 1918.

In 1917, he represented the Philippines at the Far Eastern Championship Games in Tokyo, where the Philippine team defeated Japan 15-2.

The Philippines went on to win the silver medal in the tournament. The 15-2 result remains the country's biggest win in international football.

That part of Alcántara's career is particularly important today because he was not simply a Filipino-born player who happened to find success overseas. He also wore the Philippine colors on an international stage.

Why did Paulino Alcántara leave Barcelona?

Football was not the only ambition Alcántara pursued.

He returned to the Philippines in 1916 to study medicine. During his absence, however, Barcelona struggled and eventually asked him to return.

Alcántara went back to Spain in 1918 and resumed his career with Barça. He later combined football with his medical studies before eventually retiring from the sport in 1927 to become a doctor.

His career therefore followed an unusual path for a professional footballer: elite sport and a medical profession existed side by side.

After retiring as a player, he remained connected to Barcelona and served on the club's board of directors from 1931 to 1934.

What is Paulino Alcántara's legacy in Philippine football?

Alcántara's legacy has become part of the country's football identity.

The Copa Paulino Alcántara, the Philippine Football Federation's domestic cup competition, was named in his honor in 2018. He was also inducted into the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame in 2021, becoming the first Filipino football player to receive the honor.

The significance goes beyond the trophies and records.

Alcántara provides historical proof that Filipino footballers have competed at an elite international level before the modern era of professional football, global scouting, and international youth academies.

His story also complicates the idea that Philippine football is a relatively new sporting phenomenon.

The Philippines has a much longer football history than many casual fans realize.

What can today's Filipino footballers learn from Alcántara?

The football world of Alcántara's era was vastly different from today's game.

There were no modern football academies, global transfer networks, social media scouting platforms, or international development programs connecting young players to clubs around the world.

Yet Alcántara still found a route from the Philippines to one of Europe's most recognizable clubs.

That does not mean today's players can simply repeat his journey. The sport has changed dramatically since the early 20th century.

What remains relevant is the idea that Filipino football talent is not a new development.

Alcántara established a precedent more than 100 years ago. Today's players have different opportunities, different challenges, and a much more competitive global football system. But they are also building on a sporting history that already includes a Filipino who succeeded at one of the world's most famous clubs.

A Filipino football story that started in Iloilo

Paulino Alcántara died in Barcelona in 1964, but his name remains connected to both sides of his life: the Philippines, where his story began, and Barcelona, where he became a football legend.

Today, as the Philippine football community marks what would have been his 130th birthday, his story feels particularly relevant.

The modern Philippine football journey did not begin with the latest generation of players.

It began with players like Alcántara, who crossed borders long before it was common for Filipino athletes to build careers overseas.

From Iloilo to Barcelona, his career remains one of the most extraordinary chapters in Philippine sports history.

And perhaps the most important part of his legacy is not the number of goals he scored.

It is the fact that, more than a century ago, a Filipino footballer showed just how far the game could take him.

Hong Kong Halloween Month Brings Street Parties, Theme Park Frights and Free Rides

If Halloween is your excuse to book a quick trip, Hong Kong is turning October into one big spooky-season playground.

For the first time, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is bringing Halloween celebrations beyond the city's theme parks with Hong Kong Halloween Month, a city-wide celebration taking place every Saturday from October 17 to 31, 2026.

With the theme “Make the Streets Your Runway,” the celebration encourages visitors and locals to dress up and bring their Halloween looks into the city's streets. Expect cosplay parties, themed installations, music, photo spots, food, and family-friendly activities across several popular districts.

And there's an especially fun incentive for visitors: on selected dates, those in costume can enjoy free rides on Hong Kong's iconic Ding Ding Tram and a Halloween-themed open-top sightseeing bus.

What can travelers expect from Hong Kong Halloween Month?

Rather than concentrating all the festivities in one location, Hong Kong Halloween Month spreads the celebrations across several districts.

That makes the event particularly interesting for travelers who want to combine sightseeing with Halloween activities. You can explore the city during the day, then turn your evening itinerary into a costume party without necessarily heading to a theme park.

Here are some of the highlights.

Central gets a Halloween makeover

Central will feature large-scale Halloween installations designed to turn the city's streets into photo opportunities.

Visitors can encounter giant eyeballs, a mysterious gateway, and a haunted jail, alongside an outdoor music party and family carnival.

For travelers with children, the combination of installations and daytime sightseeing could make Central an easy addition to a family itinerary.

Kai Tak gets a Halloween party for pet lovers

Pet parents are also included in the festivities.

The Kai Tak Sports Park Halloween Party will feature pet photo spots, neon-lit installations, and live busking performances.

It offers a different take on the usual Halloween party, giving visitors a chance to bring their four-legged companions into the celebration.

Lan Kwai Fong turns into Monster Mash

For those looking for a bigger nightlife atmosphere, Only in LKF! Halloween Cosplay Party @LKF Monster Mash brings cosplay and street-party energy to Lan Kwai Fong.

The celebration includes three themed events:
  • Monster DJ Night
  • Wizard Block Party
  • Monsters Night

Expect roaming cosplayers, monster flash mobs, and DJ performances as Lan Kwai Fong becomes one of the city's Halloween party destinations.

Mong Kok brings Halloween to the streets

Over in Mong Kok, Next Stop, Mong Kok! Langham Place Halloween Street Party combines Halloween installations with food and shopping.

One of the more eye-catching attractions will be the “Mong Kok Haunted MiniBus,” a Hong Kong red minibus transformed into a Halloween-themed installation.

Visitors can also look out for themed snacks and limited-edition desserts, making this a good stop for travelers who like to mix their sightseeing with food and Instagram-worthy moments.

Tsim Sha Tsui East adds music by Victoria Harbour

The TST East Halloween celebration will bring local and international DJs to the waterfront.

With Victoria Harbour as the backdrop, the event gives visitors another option for spending Halloween evening outside the city's theme parks.

What about Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean Park?

Hong Kong's major theme parks are also getting into the Halloween spirit, so visitors who prefer traditional theme-park scares and seasonal entertainment will have plenty to choose from.

At Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, Disney Halloween Time brings seasonal entertainment, food, merchandise, and Trick-or-Treat experiences to the park.

The 2026 lineup includes the new musical celebration “Mickey’s Happy Halloween Adventure,” along with “Uninvited! A Villains Takeover Party” and the musical “Let’s Get Wicked.”

For Disney fans, this offers a different kind of Halloween experience from the city's street parties, with familiar characters and villains becoming part of the seasonal programming.

Meanwhile, Ocean Park Hong Kong is staging its annual Halloween Fest, featuring four scare experiences alongside themed entertainment, interactive activities, food, and limited-edition merchandise.

One of the headline attractions is a collaboration with “Under the Castle,” an original intellectual property created by artist Jackson Wang. The experience is designed as an immersive, multi-sensory horror attraction.

How can you get free rides during Hong Kong Halloween Month?

Here's one detail travelers may want to plan around.

Visitors wearing Halloween costumes can enjoy free rides on the Ding Ding Tram and a Halloween-themed open-top sightseeing bus on October 17, 24, and 31.

The open-top sightseeing bus will stop at all five street-party locations, making it possible for visitors to move between celebrations while taking in the city along the way.

The Ding Ding Tram, one of Hong Kong's most recognizable forms of public transport, will be available for the Halloween promotion between Causeway Bay and Sheung Wan (Western Market).

For travelers, this is more than just a transportation perk. The tram itself becomes part of the Halloween experience and offers a particularly Hong Kong way to get around the festivities.

Why Hong Kong Halloween Month could be worth adding to an October itinerary

Halloween in Hong Kong has traditionally been associated with major attractions such as Disneyland and Ocean Park. This year's city-wide approach expands the experience into neighborhoods, shopping areas, nightlife districts, and public spaces.

That means travelers don't necessarily have to choose between “Halloween activities” and “seeing Hong Kong.” The two can become part of the same itinerary.

A possible day could start with sightseeing or shopping, continue with a themed food stop in Mong Kok, and end with a street party or waterfront DJ event.

For Filipino travelers who enjoy dressing up, taking photos, trying seasonal food, or simply looking for a different October getaway, the street-party format also makes Halloween feel less like a single-ticket attraction and more like a city-wide celebration.

When is Hong Kong Halloween Month happening?

Hong Kong Halloween Month takes place every Saturday from October 17 to 31, 2026.

The three main celebration dates are:
  • October 17, 2026
  • October 24, 2026
  • October 31, 2026

These dates also correspond to the free-ride promotion for costumed visitors.

With street parties spread across Central, Kai Tak, Lan Kwai Fong, Mong Kok, and Tsim Sha Tsui East, plus separate Halloween programming at Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean Park, travelers have several ways to build a spooky-season itinerary.

For Filipino visitors planning an October trip to Hong Kong, the easiest strategy may be to pick a Saturday, pack the costume, and let the city's Halloween celebrations determine where the evening takes you.
