Steps to ensure a healthier family in 2021

1/14/21

Adopting a new healthy habit and sticking to it is easier said than done. It is difficult to do it for yourself and even more challenging if you want the entire family to start living a healthy lifestyle.  The new normal way of life is undeniably stressful. Even those who are already embracing a healthy lifestyle have fallen into bad habits. The key to establishing good habits is to take small, sustainable steps to ensure a healthier family in 2021.

Start with a healthy, regular meal

Food deliveries have become the most convenient way to feed the family. Those who work from home tend to skip meals or opt for fast food. Parents set an example for their children. They eat what you eat. Make healthy choices whenever possible. If you can't find time to cook, look for restaurants that offer healthy food options that will help the family's overall nutrition.

You can also prepare meals in advance. Store in the freezer fruit and vegetable cut-ups which you can make into a smoothie or grab as a fruit snack.

Keep physically active

Did you know that exercise can make you happy? Endorphins are chemicals naturally produced by our body when we do certain activities like working out. It helps reduces stress and gives a feeling of happiness. Develop a simple workout activity where the family can all participate. Go for a walk, jog, or bike around the neighborhood. Make it fun for kids by having an "active game night" during weekends instead of binge-watching.

Sleep well

Not getting enough hours of sleep can affect how we perform our daily tasks. The health also suffers because our body goes through healing and repair during sleep. Being sleep-deprived could lead to the risk of heart disease, kidney disease, and even obesity.  A good night's sleep boosts the immune system and the family needs a strong immunity from diseases more than ever.

To sleep well, make your bedroom conducive for rest. Reduce your exposure to blue light from your gadgets in the evening. You should also avoid engaging in extreme physical activity an hour before bedtime. A hot bath can also be relaxing and improves the quality of your sleep.

Take care of mental health

Dealing with the uncertainty brought about by the pandemic makes all of us suffer mentally. We sometimes find ourselves helpless and not knowing how to respond to the things happening around us. It is a difficult time for everybody. Take time reaching out to your family members. Have regular and meaningful conversations. It's okay to not feel okay all the time. Make each other know that there is someone always ready to listen and help make it through the bad days.

A lot has changed with the way we live. We still do not know what is in store for us in 2021 but we are more prepared now. As we spend more time at home with the family, promoting healthy lifestyle is achievable. These small steps can make a big difference in your family's health and well-being.
