On its 30th year, Ballet Manila continues to inspire generations and surpass expectations

Monday, February 17

Lisa Macuja Elizalde

Against all odds and surpassing every expectation, Ballet Manila triumphantly celebrates its 30th anniversary – a testament to its resilience, unwavering passion and boundless creativity. From its humble beginnings beset by skepticism and naysayers, Ballet Manila has risen to become a symbol of artistic excellence, and a beacon of hope that has inspired countless individuals to pursue their own dreams with passion and hard work.

Three decades of dedication and passion for excellence

Reflecting on the journey, Lisa Macuja Elizalde, Ballet Manila's CEO and artistic director, shares that Ballet Manila has built a legacy that speaks for itself and at its core are values instilled by its first artistic director, Eric V. Cruz, and her co-artistic director of many years, the late Osias Barroso Jr.

“Taking company class every day and jumping until the end of class is a must-do for everyone in the company. The rule really was no class, no rehearsal. No rehearsal, no performance. All part of the discipline needed to stay in top form to be able to dance well,” recounts Lisa. She emphasized daily class, discipline, and prioritizing dancers' welfare have been a cornerstone of the company's success.

These values have helped Ballet Manila achieve numerous milestones over the past three decades. She fondly highlights classical ballets like “Swan Lake” and La Bayadere” with an exceptionally strong female corps de ballet as well as “Reconfigured” and “Bloom” that showcased the prowess of their male ensemble. Their specialized performances, such as "Circus De Ballet" and "Ballet and Ballads," have captivated mass audiences, while the Lisa Macuja Swan Song series celebrated a ballerina's illustrious career with live orchestral accompaniment.

A particularly proud moment for the company was the international premiere of "Ibong Adarna" at the Karmiel Festival in Israel in 2014, marking the first Filipino full-length ballet to achieve such a feat.

These highly acclaimed shows prove that Ballet Manila’s dancers are a product of the company’s commitment to excellence and artistry.

Many of its alumni have gone on to achieve great success in their careers. Christine Rocas, for instance, retired after being a principal dancer with the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago, Illinois for over 15 seasons. Katherine Barkman is currently a soloist with the San Francisco Ballet, and Chris Mohnani, now Managing Director of the Samsung Performing Arts Center, was a principal dancer of Nashville Ballet and former artistic director of Dance Theater of Tennessee. Jeffrey and Pamela Espejo both serve as faculty at Steps and Academy One, while Elline Damian, Aileen Gallinera, and Eduardo Espejo were principal dancers with Ballet David Campos in Barcelona, Spain. Ea Torrado has established herself as the artistic director of her dance company, Daloy.

Lisa also highlights the thriving current crop of teachers and dancers at Ballet Manila and the Lisa Macuja School of Ballet, including Romeo and Sofia Peralta, Eileen Lopez, and Gerardo Francisco Jr. Among all, Lisa considers the late Osias Barroso Jr., co-artistic director of Ballet Manila before his passing, her best and most successful student: “He has taught so many dancers and has basically changed the landscape of male ballet dancers in the Philippines,” she says.

While its dancers remain to be the backbone of Ballet Manila, Lisa also acknowledges the pivotal role of technology in keeping the dance company on top of the game. Lisa shares, “I think we would not have survived the pandemic if we didn't have the technology to connect with other dancers and teachers through online learning.” It has also helped in recalling choreography and re-staging ballets through filming and recording rehearsals and performances. However, she also emphasized the importance of face-to-face instruction, adding, “I still believe that face to face instruction and meeting inside the sacred walls of the studio is still the most effective way of learning as a dance student and teaching as a dance instructor.”

Dancing into the future

As Ballet Manila celebrates is 30th year, Lisa has so many reasons to be excited about. As a mentor, performer, and artistic director, she hopes to continue finding joy in her work. And it’s all set to happen with the many plans and projects already in the pipeline.

Currently, she’s hard at work for “PEARLS,” a new choreography for the Pearl Gala to celebrate the company’s 30th anniversary. Aside from this, she is also eager for her Princess Trilogy by adding a fourth Princess Ballet. She also envisions extending their Filipino series, which includes "Ibong Adarna" and "Florante at Laura," to incorporate other literary works studied in high school and college.

She also hopes to follow up her "La Traviata" with another ballet based on an opera emphasizing that the possibilities for new creations are endless. Excitement is also building for their upcoming international and local tours in 2025, which will see Ballet Manila blockbuster ballets "Ibong Adarna" and "Cinderella" brought to various locations here and abroad.

The best is yet to come!

Ballet Manila remains dedicated to its mission of "bringing ballet to the people and people to the ballet." Lisa's strategy is simple yet powerful: "To keep on dancing, one high-quality performance at a time. Every time I talk to my dancers during our Green Room before the performance begins, I always tell them to dance so well that the audience will want to come back again and again. That’s the way to keep on bringing ballet to the people and more people to the ballet. One great performance at a time that people will not want to miss!"

With this rousing outlook, Ballet Manila is heading into a bright future, driven by a strong foundation and continuous innovation. With a school regularly training and feeding the company with professional dancers, a strong social media presence, local and international tours, and support from its patron Fred J. Elizalde, Ballet Manila is well-positioned for continued success.

As Ballet Manila celebrates this monumental milestone, the company reaffirms its dedication to excellence, creativity, and bringing the beauty of ballet to the hearts of all. The journey may have begun 30 years ago, but the story of Ballet Manila is far from over. As Lisa passionately declares, "The best is always yet to come!"

Ballet Manila’s Florante at Laura: A symphony of creativity and harmonious ingenuity

Sunday, October 6

Ballet Manila Florante at Laura

The landmark production brings together some of the country’s finest dance and musical artists for a world premiere that spotlights yet another Filipino literary masterpiece

“Something magical happens when artists come together! ”

Lisa Macuja Elizalde, Ballet Manila's creative director, couldn't contain her excitement when asked about the upcoming world premiere of Florante at Laura.

The outstanding production, which comes at the heels of the ballet company’s highly successful Ibong Adarna, will be staged at the Aliw Theater on October 12, 2024, at 8 PM, and on October 13 and 19, 2024 at 5 PM. Florante at Laura will gather some of the country’s highly esteemed creatives in music, literature, ballet, and stage production.

A collaboration of masters in their craft

Lisa Macuja Elizalde

“Florante at Laura was a project that was going to be Gerardo Francisco’s next epic adventure. This was planned way before the pandemic happened,” recalled Lisa.

Gerardo is the dance company’s longtime principal dancer and co-artistic associate, who also choreographed the award-winning Ibong Adarna. Working with him is the exemplary British choreographer Martin Lawrance who is behind Ballet Manila’s full length innovative retelling of Romeo and Juliet in the Filipino setting.

With this collaboration, Gerardo shared, “Clear communication, thorough discussions, and mutual support were crucial in keeping us on track.” To this, Martin agrees. “We just seem to click and bounce ideas off of each other. It has so far been a very fruitful collaboration. Communication has been the key! ”

From the collaboration between Gerardo and Martin, the intricate pieces to this masterpiece of a production started falling into place when Lisa invited renowned writer and balagtasan expert Professor Michael Coroza as a guest in her show, Art 2 Art, where she asked him to watch Ibong Adarna. “I then invited Michael to collaborate with Gerardo and Martin Lawrence to create the libretto for Florante at Laura.”

Soon after, the quest for a composer began. Lisa imagined someone who can create original compositions akin to a Filipino Tchaikovsky—sweeping, dramatic, powerful, and romantic. “I was so very thrilled when National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab said yes!” shared Lisa.

One of the pillars of Original Pilipino Music (OPM), Ryan Cayabyab, was named National Artist for Music in 2018 with an extensive body of work ranging from orchestras and full-length musical productions to television and commercials. “It had been quite some time since I wrote a large musical work,” he shared.

Despite being a seasoned composer and musician, Ryan was thrilled to work with fellow creatives: “Most important before I start creating music is the mutual understanding among the other creatives and the producer regarding style and medium of music.”

Breathing life into his original compositions is the Orchestra of the Filipino Youth (OFY) under the baton of his son, Toma Cayabyab—another dream fulfilled for Ryan. “Everything is a surprise and wonder for me. I challenged myself into accepting this landmark ballet production, and I hope that it becomes an important legacy for all of us involved in it.”

An epic production with mesmerizing visuals

A literary masterpiece written by Filipino poet Francisco ‘Balagtas’ Baltasar and published in 1838, Florante at Laura follows the story of Florante, a duke who was held captive and enslaved by the Turks. But with the help of Aladin, he managed to escape from his captors to return to his country, Albania, to face off the usurper Count Adolfo, seek redemption, and reunite with his beloved Laura.

To translate the story’s universal themes of love, betrayal, and friendship in dramatic visuals, Ballet Manila tapped the expertise of key players who have been involved in many local and international productions for decades. Set designer Mio Infante explained that his designs depict not just the actual setting in the story. “This epic ballet includes a diverse set of locations, which not only serve as physical spaces but also symbolize the internal and external conflicts of the characters, as well as broader themes of love, war, loyalty, and betrayal.”

Complementing his designs are the stunning costumes from Make It Happen, led by Otto Hernandez & Therese Arroyo Hernandez. The duo noted, “Costumes play a crucial role in conveying the story and message of a production. It can contribute to the overall visual aesthetics, help define characters, evoke emotions, and enhance the audience's understanding of the narrative.”

Meanwhile, lighting director John Batalla emphasizes the importance of using a distinct lighting color palette to differentiate the varied locales of Florante and Laura. “Mood is certainly a major part of the themes that lighting has to tackle in a production such as this in order to transport the audiences to a different time and far-away places.”

Expect more from Ballet Manila

As one of the country’s leading dance companies, Ballet Manila has been known for its keen eye for excellence and artistry. While it has created many award-winning productions, the audience can expect more world class performances thanks to the leadership of Lisa.

But for now, she wishes the audience to bask in the magical greatness of Florante at Laura. “That’s why we work so hard every day – to create art that people will want to watch again and again.”

All performances will be staged at Aliw Theater, Pasay City. For tickets, visit www.ticketworld.com.ph. To learn more about Ballet Manila and its shows, visit www.balletmanila.com.ph.

Ballet Manila’s Giselle to feature global superstars Renata Shakirova and Alexei Timofeyev

Saturday, August 17

Ballet Manila Giselle

World-renowned ballet superstars from the prestigious Mariinsky Ballet, Renata Shakirova and Alexei Timofeyev, will be coming to Manila for a rare Philippine performance in the restaging of Ballet Manila’s Giselle set to happen at the Aliw Theater on August 31, 2024 at 8pm and September 1, 2024 at 5 pm.

This much-awaited collaboration with the Russian superstars of ballet once again highlights Ballet Manila’s artistry and keen eye for excellence in every production, by working with world-class performers – this time for Giselle. This very special collaboration was made possible by Lisa Macuja Elizalde, Ballet Manila’s artistic director and chief executive officer, and her close ties with the Mariinsky Ballet (formerly Kirov Ballet) where she also trained and became the first foreign soloist in the mid-80s. She shared, “The fact that we are collaborating with guest artists and star performers Renata Shakirova and Alexsei Timofeyev will always bring out the best in the company.”

With their star power, Macuja Elizalde couldn’t be more excited for their rendition of the well-loved Giselle. “I think that Renata’s true romantic style of dancing and the fact that she is dancing with her real-life prince Alexei is going to transform Ballet Manila’s Giselle to a Giselle of another level,” she adds. The world-renowned Russian dancers, incidentally, are married to each other in real life.

Renata Shakirova

Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Renata joined Mariinsky Ballet, one of the leading dance companies in the world, upon her graduation in 2015 and was immediately given her first principal role as Kitri in Don Quixote. That same year, she was listed among the 25 to Watch by Dance Magazine. And in 2016, she competed in the Bolshoi Ballet Competition, where she won first prize.

Alexei Timofeyev

Meanwhile, Leningrad-born Alexei joined Mariinsky Ballet in 2004 and is currently the soloist of the dance company. As a soloist, he managed to secure various awards under his belt, including prize-winner at the VII International Ballet Competition in Seoul in 2010; diploma-recipient at the XVI International Rudolf Nureyev Ballet Festival in 2010 where he was cited for his superb levels of professionalism and contribution to the development of ballet in the Republic of Bashkortostan; and diploma-recipient at the XI International Ballet Dancers’ and Choreographers’ Competition in Moscow in 2009.

While it is their first time to perform on the Philippine stage, Renata is looking forward to connecting with the Filipino audience through her performance. “What’s important to be able to connect with the audience, wherever they are, but especially with a Filipino audience, is to highlight the small nuances that are included in the performance, like the turn of the head or the eye-to-eye contact with your partner, so that the emotions in the story can be conveyed and that the audience can enjoy the show.”

Meanwhile, Alexei excitedly looks forward to performing in front of a new audience, as he noted, “We are feeling the good kind of vibes with the Filipino audience, and we want them to live the story of Giselle with us on stage. It’s going to be our first time, and we hope to share that special experience with all of them.”

The third offering of Ballet Manila’s 26th performance season, dubbed Ballet Masterpieces, Giselle is a classic love story of a village girl (Giselle) who falls in love with Albrecht, not knowing he is already engaged. When she finds out, she dies of a broken heart and becomes a wili, joining the souls of girls who are also wronged by their men. Meanwhile, Albrecht visits the grave of Giselle, who protects him from Myrtha, the vengeful queen of the wilis.

Complementing their performances is a dynamic ensemble made up of young and veteran dancers from Ballet Manila, which, according to Macuja Elizalde, is the main change for the restaging of Giselle. “Ballet Manila Corps de Ballet is made up of more young members who have just joined the company post-pandemic - standing side by side with Ballet Manila dancers who are "veterans" and have performed the ballet many times before.”

The two-act ballet will interestingly showcase the talents of real-life couples both on and off stage. Ballet Manila's principal dancers Abigail Oliveiro and Mark Sumaylo will headline the performance on August 31 at 1pm while the world-renowned duo Renata and Alexei will take on the title roles on August 31 at 8pm and September 1 at 5pm.

All performances will be staged at Aliw Theater, Pasay City. For tickets, visit www.ticketworld.com.ph. To know more about Ballet Manila and its shows, visit www.balletmanila.com.ph

This season promises a spectacular showcase of technical brilliance, virtuosic feats, and enchanting storytelling, blending classical ballet masterpieces with timeless Filipino literary classics.

Tatlong Kwento ni Lola Basyang: Filipino Literary Classics in Ballet Form

In May, Ballet Manila brings the magic of well-loved Filipino tales to life with "Tatlong Kwento ni Lola Basyang." Partnering with Anvil Publishing, this production is based on Christine Bellen Ang's retelling of Severino Reyes' timeless stories. Anvil Publishing president Xandra Ramos Padilla emphasizes the significance of instilling pride in local art, noting that Lola Basyang's stories, beautifully translated into dance by Ballet Manila, have been cherished for generations.

Adding an extra layer of excitement is the presence of celebrated performing artist Mitch Valdes, who injects her signature wit and humor into the role of Lola Basyang. This unique fusion of local classics with world-renowned masterpieces is a rare opportunity for audiences to witness the richness of Filipino folklore on a classical ballet stage.

Giselle: An Ethereal Ballet of Love and Loss

Completing the season is the ethereal ballet "Giselle" in August and September. This romantic masterpiece explores themes of love, tragedy, and loss, providing a captivating conclusion to the "Ballet Masterpieces" season.

A Glance Into the Future: Florante at Laura, Ang Ibong Adarna, and Holiday Cheer

Looking ahead, Ballet Manila continues its commitment to excellence with the world premiere of Gerardo Francisco's and Martin Lawrance's cutting-edge version of "Florante at Laura" in October. In November, the Filipino classical tale "Ang Ibong Adarna," choreographed by Gerardo Francisco, will grace the stage at the Areté Theater, thanks to the ongoing partnership with Aréte Ateneo.

The holiday season will be filled with joy as Ballet Manila presents Lisa Macuja-Elizalde's take on "Snow White" from December 25 to 30, 2024, in the Holiday Cheer Series.

Lisa Macuja-Elizalde expresses hope that by the season's end, audiences will rediscover and develop a newfound appreciation for classical ballet and the vibrant Filipino culture that Ballet Manila passionately represents. CCP brings world-class Granada Flamenco Ballet to the Philippine stage

Wednesday, September 13

Granada Flamenco Ballet

Straight from the heart of Seville, Spain, Granada Flamenco Ballet is set to perform its riveting rendition of “Báilame (Dance for Me)" for the first time on the Philippine stage on September 20 and 21 at the Casino Español de Cebu in Cebu City, and on September 22 and 23 at the Tanghalang Ignacio B. Gimenez (CCP Blackbox Theater) inside the CCP Complex.

This production is a collaboration between the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the Embassy of Spain in Manila, the Casino Español de Cebu, and the Flamenco Agency from Seville to commemorate the Philippines and Spain’s diplomatic relations for 75 years.

“Granada Flamenco Ballet is more than a dance ensemble; they are the living testament to the art form that influenced many Filipinos. The fusion between history and artistry will definitely create an unforgettable experience that appeals to both aficionados and newcomers to the Flamenco scene,” said CCP vice-chair Margie Moran-Floirendo.

Báilame is a ballet performance focusing on finding a greater balance between music and dance. For this show, the audience will be enthralled by the absence of a plot, making everything else focused on the dancers' movements.

The repertoire for the Philippine premiere will focus on sensations and feelings associated with the sound of the Flamenco shoes or castanets, other acoustics, or the most profound silence while dancing.

Traditional Dances Reimagined

Founded in 2007 by Dr. Jaime Trancoso, the Granada Flamenco Ballet has taken its artistry to international audiences, earning a reputation of having the best Flamenco artists in Spain.

Similarly, the dance group has graced prestigious venues across the globe, such as the National Center for the Performing Arts Opera House in Beijing (NCPA), Shanghai International Dance Center Grand Theatre (SIDC), Aga Khan Museum (Canada), and the Teatro Campoamor de Oviedo (Spain).

“While keeping the traditional elements of Flamenco, Granada Flamenco Ballet has a fearless approach to fusion. And with each performance, they exceed expectations and leave a lasting impression,” shared CCP president Michelle Nikki Junia.

Flamenco dances often demonstrate stories through graceful movements and intricate footwork coupled with acoustics. Spain also had a significant influence on the Philippine dance traditions during the 16th century.

This led to the birth of the country's national dance, Cariñosa, and other famous Flamenco-inspired folk dances, such as Pandanggo sa Ilaw, Zarzuela, and Tinikling, which are still performed with pride during important events up to this day.

“Filipinos love to dance. It is deep within our roots. To see where it bloomed would definitely be an experience. This staging is also a testament to the rich blending of cultures that lived through time,” said CCP artistic director Dennis Marasigan.

Promoting authentic Flamenco production on the local stages strengthens CCP's mission and dedication to providing more diverse cultural experiences for Filipino audiences. CCP also hopes this staging will inspire the younger generation to engage in the arts.

Ticket prices for Cebu range from Php800 to Php1,000, while for Manila at Php2,000. Discounts for students, PWDs, and senior citizens also apply. Granada Flamenco Ballet's Báilame tickets are available at Ticketworld https://premier.ticketworld.com.ph. Visit https://culturalcenter.gov.ph/ for more info.

Take advantage of this culturally ground-breaking performance from world-class dancers!

Ballet Manila partners with ARETÉ to bring world-class performances in QC

Friday, September 1

Ballet is a beautiful art form that should be shared and appreciated by many. It is with this thought that the country’s premiere classical ballet company Ballet Manila, and ARETÉ, the hub of creativity and innovation within Ateneo De Manila University’s (ADMU), have partnered to make classical ballet more accessible to audiences in northern and eastern Manila.

The partnership, recently unveiled at the Hyundai Hall, ARETÉ inside ADMU, will allow the two institutions to co-produce a series of shows that will take place in the said venue. With this, more Filipinos, especially those from Quezon City and nearby areas, will have an alternative venue to watch Ballet Manila shows, apart from its home in Aliw Theater.

ARETÉ is a generative space that features theaters, art galleries, studios, laboratories, a makerspace, teaching and meeting rooms, and several open areas. The space allows groups from different fields and disciplines to create, collaborate and share knowledge, skills and practices.

“Ballet Manila’s partnership with Ateneo’s ARETÉ came at a very opportune time,” shared Lisa Macuja Elizalde, Ballet Manila’s artistic director and chief executive officer. “Fresh from concluding our 25th performance season, we’re looking to sustain the momentum by co-producing more shows that will reach a broader audience base. Bringing ballet to the people and more people to the ballet has always been Ballet Manila’s mission and vision.”

For ARETE’s artistic director Dr. Ricardo Abad, the partnership with Ballet Manila is one that he hopes will help create interest in the performance arts among more Filipinos. “I’ve been dreaming of a partnership like this for Areté and I was thrilled to know that Lisa had a similar vision for Ballet Manila. This partnership will strengthen our creative and social missions as we strive to reach out to diverse publics and communities. Join us in this effort.”

To kick-off the partnership will be the re-staging of Martin Lawrance’s modern and Filipinized iteration of “Romeo & Juliet”; which was part of Ballet Manila’s recently concluded 25th performance season, “Of Hope & Homecoming”. Show dates are on September 16, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and September 17, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. at the Hyundai Hall, ARETÉ in Ateneo de Manila University. Tickets to the shows are available through Ticketworld.

Areté and Ballet Manila have also hinted at its plans for 2024, which include a collaboration with the Lisa Macuja School of Ballet and providing various immersive learning opportunities in dance, among others.

Ballet Manila’s “Rise!” ushers in the renaissance of live performances

Monday, September 26

Ballet Manila Rise

The double bill show is a rare treat for fans as it will feature all the beloved elements of performing arts such as opera, popular, OPM, and orchestral music.

“We will come back leaner but stronger,” This was the promise made and fulfilled by Prima Ballerina and Ballet Manila artistic director and CEO Lisa Macuja Elizalde as the foremost dance company returns to stage one of its special performances of 2022: “Rise!”, set for October 7 (8pm) and 9 (5pm), at its fully upgraded home venue, the Aliw Theater.

Echoing a message of hope and light amid a time of uncertainty and fear, Ballet Manila’s new show captures the essence of rising through adversities and fulfilling Macuja-Elizalde’s well-publicized “phoenix rising” pronouncement after the home theater was razed by a fire.

Much more than just incorporating a phoenix’s nature of rebirth and new beginnings, the special performance is also a celebration of the return of live performance. “Rise!” is a double bill show that will begin with a pop program entitled “Ballet & Ballads” and a retelling in ballet of the opera “La Traviata” as choreographed by Lisa Macuja Elizalde.

While the moving performance of Ballet Manila is the centerpiece of the much-awaited production, “Rise!” is a rare treat for fans as it will feature the beloved elements of performing arts such as opera, popular music, OPM, and orchestral music.

Featuring the highly respected conductor Maestro Gerard Salonga as the musical director and orchestra conductor, the show will be graced by renowned artists, including pop singer Bituin Escalante who is touted as one of the country’s best female vocalists. Award-winning opera singer Jade Riccio and multi-talented singer Ivan Nery are also headlining the show.

Supporting these prominent artists is a powerhouse creative team, led by prima ballerina Lisa Macuja-Elizalde as overall artistic director, theater artist Michael Williams as the stage director, playwright Luna Inocian as the scriptwriter and Gerardo Francisco Jr. and Martin Lawrance as choreographers. There is a 12 person opera ensemble and a 60-piece bespoke orchestra handpicked by the Maestro Salonga himself.

The fire, the pandemic, and the challenges before this amazing comeback – Macuja-Elizalde believes they gave the company the opportunity to rest, recover, rebuild, and rethink their future – reinventing both the theater and Ballet Manila to become leaner, meaner, better, and ready to adapt to any kind of change that the winds may bring.

“It’s great to be back with a real live performance. There’s nothing like live performances after two years of video, filmmaking, and teaching ballet online. They say seeing is believing. We can do it and we have done it. Yes, we will soar. We all need each other to make this happen, not just Aliw, Ballet Manila, but all of the creative industries. We are here for you and we can do this together,” Macuja-Elizalde concluded.

‘Rise!’ will be staged on the 7th of October at 8:00 pm and on the 9th of October at 5:00 pm at the Aliw Theater.
