High Stakes and High Speeds: Discover ‘Spinners’ on Lionsgate Play

Friday, September 20

Rev up for a heart-pounding ride in this critically acclaimed series blending action and raw emotion.

With Lionsgate Play, Pinoy viewers can dive into diverse, global stories right from their homes. In the streaming platform's latest drop, Spinners, we are taken to the gritty underbelly of Cape Town, where the local gangs rule the streets.

17-year-old Ethan (Cantona James) is trapped in a life he never wanted. He's a good kid with few choices, forced into working for a gang to keep food on the table for himself and his younger brother. But there's a spark of hope amidst the chaos: spinning, an extreme motorsport that's as exhilarating as it is risky. Ethan discovers he's a natural behind the wheel. Will Ethan’s talent for spinning be enough to change his destiny, or will the streets claim him before he can escape?

Beyond the adrenaline-pumping races, Spinners also offers a poignant commentary on poverty, privilege, and the human spirit's resilience. Spinners is the first African series to be selected in competition at Canneseries. It has gotten awards and rave reviews for its thrilling action, raw emotion, and powerful performances. With the entire 8-episode series now available on Lionsgate Play, you can witness the journey of Ethan and his fellow spinners as they push the limits.

On what it was like filming in the slums of Cape Flats, lead actor Cantona James told GQ South Africa, "The word 'cathartic' was used a lot on set, because we were surrounded by the story we’re telling. I'm talking about kids from 10 years old and younger, not being at school, working, and selling drugs. I'm telling a fictional story, but these kids are living the life. So, for me, it helped with sourcing the story and the character, and also bringing a sense of responsibility to everyone and everything that we're doing, because we can see who we're doing it for."

Buckle up and catch “Spinners” when it premiers on Lionsgate Play on September 27.

Action and History Collide in Liam Neeson Starrer ‘In the Land of Saints and Sinners’, Now on Lionsgate Play

Tuesday, September 10

Liam Neeson In the Land of Saints and Sinners

Liam Neeson flexes his dramatic chops in the Irish action-thriller film In the Land of Saints and Sinners, now on Lionsgate Play.

Much of Liam Neeson's recent roles have been in high-octane action films that, while highly entertaining, leave little room for character exploration. But an upcoming addition to Lionsgate Play’s library, the Irish action-thriller film In the Land of Saints and Sinners, reaffirms the acting prowess of the veteran actor.

In the film, Neeson plays Finbar Murphy, a retired hitman seeking a quiet life in a secluded coastal town. However, his peaceful existence is threatened when a sinister band of terrorists, commanded by the fierce and cunning Doirean (Kerry Condon, Rome), descends upon the village. As the violence of 1970s Ireland (an era referred to as The Troubles) descends on the quiet town, Finbar has little choice but to return to his old ways. The all-Irish cast includes Jack Gleeson, (most known for playing Joffrey in Game of Thrones), who plays a young hitman who sees Finbar as a mentor.

While In the Land of Saints and Sinners has no shortage of action and intrigue, at its core, it is a touching story about patriotism, violence, redemption, and how the past can haunt us. It's not just another action movie, but rather, a thought-provoking exploration of Ireland’s complex history -- something that will likely resonate with many Filipino viewers.

On how much he recalled of The Troubles, Liam Neeson told The Hollywood Reporter, "I remember a lot... My home own was 30 miles outside Belfast, but I was a university then, 1971 and ’72. It was bad. You could hear bombs going off, drive-by shootings and stuff. It was a very, very nasty, horrible time for everybody. So, it’s interesting to do a film like this, which is entertainment and yet it’s based on a reality that happened. We didn’t bloat on it when we were shooting, but we all just got it."

On how this film strengthens his reputation for playing villains, Jack Gleeson told Eye for Film, "I guess now the parts that I tend to play do tend to be bad guys, but I like that. I don't really mind if I only play bad guys for the rest of my career. I mean, maybe it'll get boring, but I'm not bored yet. I just enjoy it, and maybe that's just what I was put here to do, you know?

Don’t miss In the Land of Saints and Sinners, premiering on Lionsgate Play on September 13 via PLDT Home and Smart.

These multi-talented actors were chosen not only for their acting prowess but also for their remarkable dancing skills, which play a significant role in the film's electrifying performances.

Catriona Gray Dives into The Idea of You with Anne Hathaway, Nick Galitzine

Friday, April 26

The Idea of You

Talks about how they can empower and inspire people to stay true and authentic

Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray recently had the wonderful opportunity to sit down for an exclusive conversation with two prominent figures of the silver screen, Anne Hathaway and Nick Galitzine, in anticipation of the highly awaited release of The Idea of You on Prime Video, set to stream on May 2.

In this captivating interview shared on Gray’s social media, lead actors Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine shared insights into the film's unique appeal and its relevance to contemporary audiences.

"Really fun music. Really, really fun music, great concert scenes, unexpected love connections– sandwiches," remarked Hathaway, teasing the delightful surprises awaiting viewers.

Based on the acclaimed contemporary love story by author Robinne Lee, The Idea of You centers on Solène (portrayed by Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mom who embarks on an unexpected romance with Hayes Campbell (played by Galitzine), the 24-year-old lead singer of August Moon, the hottest boy band on the planet.

During the interview, Hathaway reflected on the film's portrayal of women facing societal pressures and who have “ceased to be seen”. "Robinne tapped into something very real. And she captured something very real that's not fair. And it's sort of shameful in its truth. And the best way to get rid of it is to change it by making something that lives in defiance of it," she noted, highlighting the film's empowering narrative.

Meanwhile, Gray delves into the essence of Galitzine's character – his portrayal as a public figure and musician. With candid honesty, Galitzine shared the inner workings of his creative process. As a young actor, still exploring and trying out new and exciting roles in the industry, Galitzine said, “I think who Hayes was off-camera and off-stage was intriguing to me, and I resonated with him. He's a vulnerable, very feeling young man. He has a very strong moral compass and he's just really– he's looking for that connection.”

Galitzine added, “I mean, maybe not consciously, but when he finds Solène, there's this instant sort of– I use the word nourishing a lot, but it really, it nourishes him and imbues him with this energy that I think he'd been missing a lot of his life and certainly not finding in his career.”

Gray, known for her authentic narratives weaving personal triumphs with struggles, champions the cause of female empowerment. Drawing from her own journey to the Miss Universe crown, she ignites a flame of inspiration, urging women to embrace both their challenges and victories. With grace and eloquence, she underscores the transformative power of shared experiences, nurturing resilience and self-assurance.

As a global icon of empowerment and representation, Gray’s conversation with Hathaway and Galitzine amplifies the film's message of inclusivity and self-discovery.

The Idea of You will stream exclusively on Prime Video beginning May 2. Subscribers can watch movies and series on hundreds of compatible devices from anywhere, at any time, and even download episodes for offline viewing at no extra cost. Prime Video is available in the Philippines for only PHP149 a month.

Gerard Butler Races Against the End of the World in Greenland, Now on Lionsgate Play

Thursday, April 4

Gerard Butler

In this Gerard Butler starrer, a family navigates through an apocalyptic threat, showcasing the resilience and heroism of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances

How far would you go to protect your family as the world ends? In Greenland, Gerard Butler stars as John Garrity, a structural engineer who finds himself facing the ultimate test of survival as a planet-killing comet speeds towards Earth. He embarks on a perilous journey with his estranged wife (Morena Baccarin) and young son, and as cities around the globe are obliterated one after another, they witness both the darkest and brightest sides of humanity. Faced with societal breakdown and the relentless approach of the comet, their journey becomes a harrowing race against time. The family's desperate quest for safety leads them to a last-minute opportunity for salvation, offering a glimmer of hope in the face of an impending global apocalypse. Greenland is a gripping tale of resilience, love, and the indomitable will to survive against all odds.

On what attracted him to the role, Gerard Butler spoke of how the film focuses on personal stories rather than the apocalyptic background: “Rather than the typical kind of action movie where you're focusing on the bigger thing, the comet, that's almost in the background… I felt like the themes in the movie, that it was incredibly emotional and fraught and it's just this family going through hell… It wasn't your typical hero who's going up there to punch the comet in the face. This is just a simple man and a family. The hero here is almost the family unit themselves. The mother is the hero, the son is the hero. And sometimes heroism is literally just fighting enough to survive. So I really enjoy the subtleties and it took me by surprise.”

Greenland starts streaming on Lionsgate Play on PLDT Home on April 5, 2024.

Life lessons big dreamer Willy Wonka can teach us

Saturday, March 23

Stream the fantastical Timothée Chalamet-starrer with your family and friends right at home with HBO GO powered by PLDT Home

Roald Dahl’s vivid imagination brought to life the whimsical and fantastical world of Willy Wonka and his chocolate factory. From chocolate rivers to edible landscapes, the sheer creativity of the setting has been captivating audiences of all ages since the release of the book in 1964.

The latest iteration of the timeless story is the musical film Wonka – directed by Paul King and starring Timothée Chalamet – is now available locally through HBO GO powered by PLDT Home.

Wonka traces the billionaire chocolate maker’s beginnings. Chalamet plays the aspiring inventor, magician, and chocolatier newly arrived in Europe after traveling the world for seven years. Here are a few life lessons that the world’s most popular chocolatier himself can teach us:

Work hard, persist, differentiate yourself

Every entrepreneur or employee faces logistical challenges and fierce competition. Sometimes, it seems impossible to overcome obstacles, but there is always a way. Much like in Wonka, you can’t get a shop without selling chocolate, and you can’t sell chocolate without a shop. That’s indeed a conundrum yet Wonka persists in making his chocolate – leveraging his skills as a magician, inventor, and showman.

Pay attention to details

Wonka learns a lesson by not reading the fine print in Mrs. Scrubitt’s contract and he gets stuck working for her to pay off his debt. In real life, whether it’s a side hustle contract or your rental agreement, remember to always read the fine print! It’s literally fine print because it sometimes stipulates conditions you may not agree to had it been front and center.

Be creative, be imaginative

When people say use your imagination, they usually mean it sarcastically. Well, Wonka does use his imagination –and it pays off handsomely, getting his chocolate to the masses and a measure of popularity. Wonka invents “hoverchocs” or chocolates that make people fly for 20 minutes. He also invents Big Night Out chocolate, which allows the eater to feel like he’s on a night out, making him sing and dance. Wonka’s Broadway Choc has the same effect – but with better choreography as if you were on a Broadway show. They sure got everyone’s attention!

Find your inspiration

Wonka’s inspiration is his mother’s love. “Hold on to your dreams,” his mother told him when he was a young boy. Throughout his difficulties Wonka held on to these words like a lifeline. Whatever it is that inspires you to get up earlier in the morning or work later in the night, use it.

From Paul King, writer/director of the Paddington films, David Heyman, producer of Harry Potter, Gravity, Barbie and Paddington, and producers Alexandra Derbyshire (the Paddington films, Jurassic World: Dominion) and Luke Kelly (Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical), comes an intoxicating mix of magic and music, mayhem and emotion, all told with fabulous heart and humor. Starring Timothée Chalamet in the title role, this irresistibly vivid and inventive big screen spectacle will introduce audiences to a young Willy Wonka, as he becomes the world’s greatest inventor, magician and chocolate-maker.

Starring alongside Chalamet are Calah Lane (The Day Shall Come), Emmy® and Peabody Award winner Keegan-Michael Key (The Prom, Schmigadoon), Paterson Joseph (Vigil, Noughts + Crosses), Matt Lucas (Paddington, Alice in Wonderland, Little Britain), Mathew Baynton (The Wrong Mans, Ghosts), Oscar® nominee Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water, the Paddington films, Spencer), Rowan Atkinson (the Johnny English and Mr. Bean films, Love Actually), Jim Carter (Downton Abbey), with Oscar® winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite, The Lost Daughter, The Crown) and Hugh Grant (Paddington 2, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Notting Hill, Four Weddings and a Funeral). The film also stars Natasha Rothwell (The White Lotus, Insecure), Rich Fulcher (Marriage Story, Disenchantment), Rakhee Thakrar (Sex Education, Four Weddings and a Funeral), Tom Davis (Paddington 2, King Gary) and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (Paddington 2, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Mary Poppins Returns).

Enjoy Wonka with family and friends right at home with HBO GO powered by PLDT Home.

‘Golda’: The Untold Story of Israel's Iron Lady, Exclusively on Lionsgate Play

Friday, March 1

Golda

Discover the intense drama behind the 1973 Arab–Israeli War when ‘Golda’ premieres on Lionsgate Play on PLDT Home on March 8.

The story of Israel’s first and only female prime minister has been the subject of much debate and fascination, which is why Golda is likely to be one of the most talked-about titles on Lionsgate Play. Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guy Nattiv, the film is set against the backdrop of the Yom Kippur War — also known as the 1973 Arab-Israeli War. Golda chronicles the high-stakes, real-life political decisions that Prime Minister Golda Meir (played masterfully by Helen Mirren) had to make during this tumultuous time. Facing insurmountable challenges, Meir's leadership and decision-making faced intense scrutiny as she handled the threat looming over Israel — the narrative journeys with her through daunting political decisions that changed the course of history.

Talking about Helen Mirren's performance as Golda Meir, director Guy Nattiv says, "For me, as an Israeli, and as Jewish, it doesn't matter if you're not Jewish, you're one of the best actresses of our time and you are Golda to me. When I saw her on the first day on set with all the prosthetics I was blown away. My jaw dropped and I was like, this IS Golda. She really depicted every nuance and every move. I am very grateful for working with a legend."

On Meir's controversial legacy, Nattiv adds, "She will always be connected to the failure of Yum Kippur war. Golda was the wrong person, in the wrong place, in the wrong time. She didn't want to be a prime minister, but she had to take the job because no one else wanted it at that time. They pushed her to be a prime minister and then she was thrown into this mayhem and trying to deal with the mess. Israelis are so conflicted about her character. Now, if you look outside of Israel, and Jews outside of Israel, they see more of the romantic story of Golda who came from Milwaukee to Israel when she was a young woman, full of Zionism and a hope to help the country. She was the Iron Lady of Israel and, like Margaret Thatcher, there are some people who love her and some people who hate her."

Witness the powerful, gripping, and often heartbreaking story of one of history’s most controversial figures when Goldapremieres exclusively on Lionsgate Play on PLDT Home this March 8th.

Nicholas Cage Goes Meta in ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’, Coming to Lionsgate Play

Saturday, January 13

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Nicholas Cage takes on his most eccentric role yet: himself.

What happens when Nicholas Cage morphs into a fictionalized, unhinged version of himself? Answer: Tom Gormican’s hilarious action-comedy, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. The film by Lionsgate Play portrays the character of “Nick Cage” as a creatively unfulfilled actor on the brink of financial ruin. When Nick gets invited to appear at superfan Javi’s (Pedro Pascal) birthday party in exchange for $1 million, things get intense – just like Cage’s best movies always do. Cue CIA operatives recruiting him to spy on said superfan, shootouts, high-speed car chases, and Mexican standoffs.

Cage lives up to his legend status in Unbearable Weight – channeling his iconic on-screen characters and even going through a “Cagedom” shrine of props and costumes that signify the actor’s storied career. It immerses the audience in nostalgia, precisely what Director Tom Gormican aimed for when he created a movie that’s “an homage to [Cage’s] body of work.”

Talking about why he chose to create a film about Cage, Gormican says, “Nicolas Cage is unbelievably talented and can do any genre. You’ve seen him in romantic comedies like Moonstruck. You’ve seen him in comedies like The Family Man. You’ve seen him in dramas. You’ve seen him in avant-garde films like Mandy and Wild at Heart. You’ve seen him in big tentpole franchises, action movies like Con Air and Face/Off and National Treasure. There are very few actors that can do every genre equally well, who can switch from comedy to drama – sometimes within the same project – and that’s fascinating to me.”

Gormican adds: “Nick has become something that transcends being an actor. He’s become a cultural figure. As culture gets stranger and stranger and fashion choices get more outlandish, you can trace a direct line back to the patron saint of strangeness, Nicolas Cage. Just seeing his face makes people happy. That’s really interesting and made me want to dig in further and find out who he actually is.”

Meanwhile, Cage revealed that he was initially reluctant to participate in the movie since he “had no interest in playing himself.” But when he read the script and understood Gormican’s vision, reluctance turned into excitement.

On what drew him into agreeing to Gormican’s intriguing and off-kilter ideas, Cage says, “I call Tom ‘The Mind’ because the film really is his fantasy, culled from perceptions in the media and on the internet, as well as blips in my personal life that have gone public. It’s mixed with knowledge of interviews I’ve done and things that have always interested me and drew me down this path. Essentially, the film is an imagination based on Tom’s interpretation of what my life might be like.”

Watch Nicholas Cage perform yet another iconic role on The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, streaming exclusively on Lionsgate Play on PLDT Home on January 19.
