Data from the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) and the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM-2) indicates that one in three Filipino children experiences stunted growth or malnutrition, which can have lasting effects on their physical and cognitive development. Furthermore, the World Bank ranks the Philippines fifth in the East Asia and Pacific region for the highest prevalence of stunting, placing it among the ten countries worldwide with the highest number of stunted children.

This gap leaves children vulnerable to undernourishment during critical early development stages when both body and brain grow rapidly. The long-term consequences of childhood malnutrition, particularly stunting, extend beyond physical limitations, leading to poor cognitive development, lower educational achievement, and decreased productivity in adulthood.

To tackle this issue, we need to understand the root causes of malnutrition. Insufficient dietary intake, suboptimal nutrient absorption, and inefficient nutrient utilization often contribute to undernutrition in various forms, such as stunting (low height-for-age), underweight (low weight-for-age), and wasting (low weight-for-height).

While access to food matters, ensuring that children receive the proper nutrients is essential for combating malnutrition. Parents must provide a balanced diet rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and proteins to support physical and mental growth. Prioritizing nutrition reduces stunting and fosters healthy development.

Healthy growth and development begin in the kitchen. Preparing meals together ensures children get key macronutrients and essential minerals, laying a strong foundation for their well-being while strengthening family connections.

It’s important to focus on key macronutrients and minerals that support children's growth. Protein is essential for children's growth and development as it supports tissue repair and growth in muscles, skin, organs, and more. Including lean meats, dairy, eggs, and legumes in meals ensures adequate intake. Additionally, growth requires extra energy, and underweight children may need additional calories, which should come from nutritious sources like healthy fats, carbohydrates, and protein—not junk food.

Iron and zinc are also crucial for growth. Iron helps deliver oxygen to the body’s cells and supports overall development, with iron-rich foods like meat, eggs, and leafy greens being excellent sources. Zinc plays a key role in cell growth and immune function, and deficiencies can hinder development. Foods like beef, spinach, and beans are good sources of zinc, helping children grow strong and healthy.

Tanaw Collective, a newly formed supergroup comprised of celebrated singer-songwriters Acel Bisa, Aia de Leon, Barbie Almalbis, Hannah Romawac, Kitchie Nadal, and Lougee Basabas, releases their first official single, “Landslide,” today across all digital music platforms worldwide.

A poignant and minimalist cover of Fleetwood Mac’s iconic 1975 hit, “Landslide” represents their shared sentiment of letting go and embracing new beginnings both in careers and personal lives. The track conveys a collective journey of maturity, acceptance, and spiritual growth, marking another chapter in their musical evolution.

“Landslide is a song that we all know and love,” shares Barbie Almalbis. “I think each of us has covered it at some point. The first version I actually heard was the Smashing Pumpkins cover. I was in high school, and I immediately connected with it. The song’s themes of life, love, and the shifting seasons have only deepened in meaning for us as we’ve all grown older together.”

Aia de Leon recalls the pivotal moment when Hannah Romawac sparked the idea to record the song. “This seems to have launched the habit of us recording songs after we have jammed it,” the Sundo act explains. “I can’t stress enough how awesome it truly is to be able to have all these tools and technology available to artists nowadays. All of us have recording capabilities at different levels. For this track, we recorded in different places—Barbie’s home studio became the hub for Acel, Lougee, and Hannah, while Kitchie recorded her vocal takes with her trusty Rode condenser mic in her home in Spain. I also recorded my vocal tracks here from home on the south side.”

Almalbis adds, “Recording with the girls is always such a fun experience—50% work and 50% catching up. It’s a blessing to do something we love with people we love.”

The stripped-down version of “Landslide” was mixed and mastered by Angee Rozul and is being distributed via House of Tunes.

We often hear this phrase when we are unsure of how to respond—especially when it comes to making plans.

However, Megastar and InLife (Insular Life) Dreamweaver Sharon Cuneta-Pangilinan says that when it comes to retirement, we can’t just let nature take its course.

“Think of it this way: If we can plan for the next chapter of our careers habang nagtatrabaho tayo, all the more we should plan for the next chapter of our lives. Start doing more for your future by doing less, by having a retirement income plan as early as your 30s or 40s. The younger you start, the more you will be able to save and the more your savings will grow.”

In her latest vlog as part of InLife’s Dreamweaver Stories, Sharon shared that while she is not yet planning to retire immediately, she nevertheless thinks of it. “Pag sinabi mong retirement, tungkol sa pagtanda lang natin. No, it’s about wanting to finally be able to rest and kasama na doon yung living our lives to the fullest nang hindi na tayo nagtatrabaho.” 

She shares that one of the things she has learned in all her years in showbusiness and as a mother, is the value of planning ahead, including and most importantly, for retirement. “Minsan sa dami ng ginagawa natin, we just get caught up in the present. We work hard, we support ourselves and our families pero hindi natin napapansin na yung panahon natin para maghanda para sa sarili natingfuture ay slipping away.”

She quoted a recent study on retirement commissioned by InLife, which says 80% of senior citizens in the country do not have adequate financial resources once they retire. The respondents surveyed in the research also said they would need a monthly retirement income between P25,000 to P50,000 to sustain the lifestyle they have gotten used to, but this may not fit the lifestyle retirees dream of enjoying. The disparity in funds needed vs available funds upon retirement may become larger due to unforeseen circumstances, often involving healthcare costs.

“In 2023, Filipino households spent over PHP 600 billion out-of-pocket for healthcare. Dagdag pa natin dito ang projected inflation rate na 3% by 2029 - ito yung pagbaba ng value ng pera over time dahil tumataas ang cost of living. Lastly, ang mahirap pong i-predict is how much longer will we live. Kahit marami po tayong i-save, ang nakakatakot we will outlive our savings, lalo pa ngayon nag improve po talaga ang life expectancy dito sa Pilipinas. Mas humahaba ang buhay natin. This underlines the irony that while our lives continue to extend, there is so much to be done to financially prepare for those long retirement years.”

She also underscored the cultural practice of children being expected to take care of their parents. “I know it’s in our culture na maraming Filipinos rely on their kids to take care of them in their old age. Wouldn’t it be a wonderful gift to our children kung hindi tayo magiging pabigat? We don’t want to be a burden to them pagdating ng araw. Para naman lahat tayo sa pamilya—especially our children—can live our lives with less worries.”

All these future concerns, she says, may be addressed by preparing ahead. “We have a chance to turn things around. Retirement planning, it’s intimidating di ba, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. We need to think long term. Magplano para sa ating mga kinabukasan. Launched by IFPI and backed by the recorded music industry, the Official Philippines Chart will be available alongside official weekly rankings from five other ASEAN markets 

IFPI, representing the recording industry worldwide, has today announced the launch of The Official Philippines Chart, bringing official, industry-backed weekly music charts to the country for the first time.

Marilag, the hit song by Filipino R&B star Dionela, has the honour of being the first ever Official #1 track in the Philippines. The song, released in November 2024, soundtracked the remainder of the year and has continued its strong streaming performance into 2025.

The Official Philippines Chart Top 20 will be announced every Tuesday, and will showcase the most popular tracks from local and international artists based on streaming across all major platforms. The Official Philippines Charts will be available alongside Official Charts for five other ASEAN markets at the Official Southeast Asia Charts website (www.officialseacharts.com), and via the related social media channels on Instagram and Facebook, allowing music fans to engage with trending tracks and emerging artists across the region.

Locally, Philippines Recorded Music Rights Inc. (PRM) is working together with IFPI to ensure that the Official Philippines Chart is accessible to Filipino consumers. The charts will be available in their website (www.prm.com.ph) and all social media platforms.

Catch 4 must-see Chinese films at the Red Carpet Cinemas starting from Jan. 29 to Feb. 2

Cinema has the power to transform perspectives, broadening our imagination and deepening our understanding of diverse cultures and human experiences. As the Lunar New Year brings about “Transformative Beginnings” this Year of the Wood Snake, Shangri-La Plaza showcases enriching narratives from world cinema with the 19th Spring Film Festival, the most celebrated Chinese-Filipino festival, at Cinema 3 in Red Carpet Cinemas from January 29 to February 2. 

Made possible in partnership with the Ateneo de Manila University Ricardo Leong Center for Chinese Studies, Ateneo Celadon, Embassy of the Republic of China, and Film Development Council of the Philippines, the 2025 edition of the film festival focuses on four must-see films that cover themes like personal breakthroughs and growth, mirroring the transformative energy of the Year of the Wood Snake.

The first in the lineup is Where’s the Dragon?, a 2015 animated comedy film directed by Foo Sing-Choong. Featuring the voice of celebrated Chinese star Zhang Ziyi, the children’s movie centers on a brave 10-year-old girl named Jen who must work with the legendary Zodiac Animals to find the Dragon, restore order to the world, and save humanity. Where’s the Dragon? opens the film fest on January 29 at 4PM and is scheduled for another screening on February 1 at 7PM.

Written and directed by Adrian Kwan, Find Your Voice is a 2020 Hong Kong drama film about a group of troubled students given one last chance to avoid expulsion: joining a choir trial program for an intercollegiate competition. Their journey of self-discovery begins when a world-renowned conductor, played by Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau, steps in to be their mentor. Catch Find Your Voice on January 29 at 7PM, January 30 at 4PM, and February 2 at 4PM.

Spanning three decades, two generations, and three cities, Somewhere Winter (2019), directed by Wang Weiming, explores the enduring love between An Ran, a student at Beijing Normal University, and Qi Xiao, a Taiwanese photographer. Adapted from the best-selling novel by Rao Xueman, the poignant romance movie portrays the emotional complexities of a relationship torn apart by family dynamics and political shifts. Somewhere Winter hits the Red Carpet Cinemas on January 30 at 7PM and February 1 at 4PM. 

The 2023 Hong Kong comedy drama One More Chance directed by Anthony Pun completes the festival’s 2025 lineup. It features renowned actor Chow Yun-fat who plays the role of Fai, a compulsive gambler who finds a new purpose when he’s given the chance to connect with his autistic son. See One More Chance on the big screen on January 31 and February 2, both at 7PM.

The Spring Film Festival is also promoting Chinese traditional arts at the Grand Atrium with the Chinese Calligraphy Workshopon February 1 at 1PM and a wushu exhibition featuring Filipino wushu athlete Agatha Wong, who’s a five-time gold medalist in the Southeast Asian Games, and the Wushu Federation of the Philippines on February 2 at 5PM. While at it, make sure to sample some snacks and other goodies at the Spring Bazaar on February 1 and 2.

With the goal of empowering mompreneurs and equipping them with a winning mindset to succeed in business, this one-day intensive masterclass program was divided into three sessions with topics ranging from Creating an Entrepreneurial Mindset to Product Innovation and Using AI and Social Media to promote their businesses.

Passion and confidence

Wanderskye's Co-founder and CEO Bianca Larrañaga shared that passion can propel one’s business in a way that money can’t. She emphasized the importance of identifying and pursuing one’s passion as the foundation of a successful entrepreneurial venture.

While it was hard to enter a market already saturated by brands catering to tourists, Wanderskye differentiated itself with unique and quality products. This opened the avenue to partner with national retailers such as Rustan's, The Travel Club and ROX. It also opened stores in Boracay, Siargao and Bohol, as well as in Metro Manila malls and airports. 

President and CEO of Rite Tea Jaypee Morales shared the same sentiment.. He encouraged aspiring entrepreneurs to identify problems in their own lives and develop innovative solutions to address them.

Despite the challenges and setbacks Rite Tea faced during its early stages, Jaypee said perseverance, resilience, and unwavering belief in one's vision can help entrepreneurs overcome obstacles and achieve success.

How to get customers to do your marketing

One of the most challenging aspects of starting a business is creating an identity that people will remember — and love. In hospitality, where the market is transient by nature, it’s essential to make a good first impression immediately or you lose your chance to make new customers.

That is why for Commune Café owner Rosario Juan, first and foremost, one needs a distinctive aesthetic and ambiance to attract customers and make them want to experience your product. Second, never forget the human touch—from exceptional customer service that builds a strong relationship with patrons to the details of the physical store. Third, remember that customers are in tune with market trends—so should mompreneurs be.

As an example, her own Commune Café has carved a unique identity that resonates with its target audience, developing a loyal customer base that spreads positive word-of-mouth.

Failure can lead to innovation

Carmen’s Best is in most grocery stores today but when it started in 2007 founder Francisco “Paco” Magsaysay was sending out his products on individual orders. Paco emphasized the importance of setting high standards and striving for perfection. By delivering exceptional quality, businesses can differentiate their products, build brand loyalty, and attract discerning customers. 

Meanwhile, Potato Corner co-founder and Tokyo Tempura founder Jorge Wieneke found a niche in the market that brought one product outside the fast-food chains and into its own small spaces across 11 countries. Founded 25 years ago, Potato Corner, dubbed “The World’s Best Flavored Fries,” has become a top-of- mind entry point for budding entrepreneurs. 

Jorge emphasized the importance of understanding consumer needs and preferences to identify underserved niches and untapped opportunities in the market. He advocated for a culture of experimentation and risk-taking, highlighting the value of failing fast and learning from mistakes to drive innovation.

Many entrepreneurs say that embracing failure is the first step to success. It sounds ironic, but it’s true, said Zarah Jane Juan, founder of Zarah Juan brand, known for unique Filipino bag designs using icons of everyday life.

AI and social media

Social media is a powerful platform to engage with audiences, build brand awareness and drive sales. Tiktok, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn can help mompreneurs reach an audience beyond the Philippines. 

nRocket Inc. CEO Jay Jazmines said AI can be a game changer for one’s business if used wisely and strategically. Entrepreneur Fibo Lim of the Fibo Lim Group of Companies advised mompreneurs to use their social media content to connect with customers and to educate, entertain, and experience.

Drizzled Chicken owner Maine Fontanilla broke down how to use these platforms, such as TikTok to attract customers, build brand awareness, and encourage dine-ins; and Facebook for collecting online orders, showcasing flavors, and guiding the order process.

● ½ cup Mega Prime Breadcrumbs

● 1 pc. egg

● ¼ cup green onion, thinly sliced

● 1 tbsp. lemon juice

● ¼ tsp. salt

● 500 ml. cooking oil

Instructions:

Drain the sauce of Mega Sardines in Natural Oil.

Place sardines in a large mixing bowl. Stir all the ingredients with a fork, breaking apart the fish until evenly combined.

Portion mixture into patties (about 3 tbsp. each).

Pan-fry fish cakes with cooking oil until golden brown.

Serve and enjoy.

Mega Mackerel Sweet and Sour

This flavorful and balanced dish is perfect for creating an auspicious and vibrant table.

Ingredients:

● 1 can Mega Mackerel

● 1 cup water

● 1 tbsp. white sugar

● 1 clove garlic, chopped

● 1 pc. red onion, chopped

● 1 pc. carrot, chopped

● ½ cup pineapple chunks

● 1 pc. red bell pepper, chopped

● 1 pc. green bell pepper, chopped

● 1 tbsp. white vinegar

● Salt

● Black pepper, powder

Instructions:

Simmer water.

Add white sugar, red onion, and garlic. Stir until it boils.

Add Mega Mackerel and carrots.

Add red and green bell peppers.

Add pineapple chunks.

Add white vinegar.

Add salt and pepper to taste.

Serve and enjoy.

Mega Prime Vermicelli Stir-fry

This festive noodle dish represents a long life and is perfect for sharing with loved ones.

Ingredients:

● 250g. Mega Prime Vermicelli

● 1 tbsp. oil

● 1 chopped onion

● 4 cloves diced garlic

● 1 sliced carrot

● Half cabbage, shredded

● 1 tbsp. soy sauce

● 3 tbsp. Mega Prime Oyster Sauce

Instructions:

Soak vermicelli noodles in warm water for 5 minutes, then drain.

Heat the pan on high heat, and add oil. Sauté garlic and onion.

Add carrot and cabbage.

Continue stirring until soft.

Add vermicelli, soy sauce, and oyster sauce. Mix well.

Serve and enjoy.

Mega Prime Pancit Canton Special

This delightful noodle dish uses Mega Prime Choices Pancit Canton for a hearty and symbolic Lunar New Year meal. Vegetables add a healthy touch.

Ingredients:

● Mega Prime Pancit Canton

● Shrimp

● Lobster balls

● Squid balls

● Cabbage

● Carrot

● Garlic

● Onion

● Salt

● Black pepper, powder

● Soy sauce

● Fish stock

● Water

● Mega Prime Oyster Sauce

Instructions:

In a pan, sauté garlic and onions.

Add shrimp, lobster balls, and squid balls.

Add carrots.

Add flavorings such as salt, pepper, soy sauce, and oyster sauce.

Add fish stock and water until it boils.

Add cabbage, then reduce heat.

Add Mega Prime Pancit Canton and stir until it cooks.

Serve and enjoy.

Mega Sardines Fried Wontons

Add Mega Sardines to steamed or fried dumplings, a traditional symbol of wealth and good fortune.

Ingredients:

● 2 cans Mega Sardines in Tomato Sauce

● 1 piece carrot, diced

● 2 white onions, diced

● 1 pc. egg

● Salt

● Black pepper, powder

● 2 tbsp. spring onion, chopped

● Oil

● 1 pack wonton wrapper

Instructions:

Drain the sauce of Mega Sardines in Tomato Sauce.

Crush sardines.

Add carrot, white onion, salt, pepper, and spring onion. Mix.

Add egg and mix.

Place the mixture in wonton wrappers and seal.

Steam for 25 to 30 minutes or deep fry until golden brown.

Serve and enjoy.
