A fusion of water and architecture: GROHE SPA unveils “Aquatecture” spaces at Milan Design Week

Friday, May 10

Throughout history, the symbiotic relationship between nature and culture has significantly influenced art, fashion, and architecture. Aiming to unravel the various dimensions in which nature can serve as a wellspring of inspiration, Milan Design Week is centered around “Materia Natura”. Embracing this theme, the world’s largest annual design event serves as an ideal stage for GROHE SPA, the premium sub-brand of GROHE, a leading global brand for complete bathroom solutions and kitchen fittings. The word SPA originally comes from the first letters of “Salus per aquam”, which is the founding concept behind GROHE SPA. Celebrating the transformative power of water at the impressive Palazzo Reale near the Duomo, GROHE showcases carefully curated bathroom solutions that epitomize new luxury and bespoke quality in a holistic installation.

A tribute to nature and history

Based on the concept of “Aquatecture” – the fusion of water and architecture – the GROHE SPA installation in the courtyard of Palazzo Reale unveils a series of spaces that elevate the significance and importance of water in architecture, and the health and well-being benefits this infusion brings. Conceived by the in-house LIXIL Global Design and Brand Identity team, the “Aquatecture” installation pays tribute to the history of the building, interwoven with the contemporary GROHE SPA “Salus per aquam” concept. Inspired by the former courtyard garden and in synergy with Milan Design Week’s theme “Materia Natura”, it thoughtfully blends nature and architecture to create immersive spaces that reflect the essence of GROHE SPA. These carefully curated spaces echo the former garden, creating sensual areas to reflect, revitalize, and energize.

“Through our installation at Palazzo Reale, we reflect the intricate bond between nature and human creativity, intertwining the rich history of the royal palace with the modern ethos of GROHE SPA. Inviting visitors on a sensory journey to deeply experience ‘Salus per aquam’, our ‘Aquatecture’ spaces exhibit the powerful connection of water in architecture. They stand not only as showcases but as inspiration for architects and designers, encouraging collaboration and experimentation,” explains Patrick Speck, Leader, LIXIL Global Design EMENA.

Redefining spa luxury across four tiers

Each “Aquatecture” space represents one of the four tiers that bring GROHE SPA to life. Visitors embark on their immersive journey at the fourth tier that shows industry-leading products to create the ultimate home spa hideaway. Shower solutions like GROHE Rainshower Aqua and the F-Digital Deluxe modules combine timeless elegance with modern technology, using light, steam, sound and smell to delight the senses. In addition, the GROHE Atrio Outdoor Shower provides a refreshing and rejuvenating experience, enabling a stronger connection to nature and the tranquility this brings. Transitioning to the third tier, the spotlight is on the GROHE Colors Collection with the new Satin finish. Offering a luxurious touch and expanded design choices for a personalized look, the new finish is available for GROHE Allure and GROHE Atrio, as well as matching showers and accessories in the colors Satin Steel and Satin Graphite.

The highlight of the second tier is the new GROHE Allure Gravity Private Collection. Blending a slim square silhouette with boundless avenues for customization, the faucet line comes with exchangeable cover plates expertly crafted from glass, mirror or marble. GROHE is partnering with Caesarstone, the global pioneer of premium countertop surfaces, to craft cover plates from the brand’s durable surfaces in timeless designs. Culminating the exhibition, the first tier is comprised of the GROHE Icon 3D collection: The 3D metal-printed products redefine what is possible, while taking sustainable product design with ultimate customization options to a new level.

CSB Interior Design student wins American Standard Design Award 2023

Thursday, June 22

Aevan Georgeline De Jesus

Aevan Georgeline De Jesus, a fifth year Interior Design student from the De La Salle – College of St. Benilde, bagged the top award in the recent American Standard Design Award (ASDA) 2023, a competition for students that seeks to uncover the power of design to create not only a bathroom where one can recharge and rejuvenate but a space that is truly loved by everyone in the family.

Themed ‘A Home to Love, A Space for Everyone,’ the ASDA competition, organized by American Standard, part of LIXIL, aims to reflect the relevance of multi-generational living with a design approach that balances hygiene, ergonomic, safety and convenience for user of different age groups – from children to parents and grandparents.

De Jesus’ design, entitled “The Grid: Close Family Ties, an Ode to the Warmth of Home,” – in keeping with the Residential Bathroom Space Design challenge – bested more than 300 other entries, all of which focused on the importance of bathroom aesthetics for urban living in high-mass housing. The designs were judged by an esteemed panel of judges that included LIXIL Water Technology (LWT) Philippines leader Hermie Limbo, Atelier Almario Corporation creative director & co-founder Cynthia Almario, PDP Architects CEO Architect Cathy Saldaña, and WTA Architecture and Design Studio’ Arvin Pangilinan who represented principal architect William Ti.

According to De Jesus, The Grid, is inspired by the warmth of close family ties found in Asian homes. By separating every area in the bathroom, users get to perform their tasks without having to wait for the othersto finish. The floor plan was designed to be functional at 360 degrees with the shower on the left, toilet on the right and opposite is the basin area with the built-in laundry. On the left side of the cube is a vanity set with hanging rods and tall mirror and a house plant to brighten the morning. Meanwhile, on the right side is a reminder board so every family can jot down notes, letters, and paper posts to organize the house activities.

De Jesus used colors, materials and finishes that mimic a warm home such as opaque glass and wood panels to create a Capiz look typical in a Filipino home. To complete the functional space, De Jesus used American Standard products that are helpful to every household member – from children and parents to the elderlies. Some of the key pieces include the Signature Vessel EasySET Exposed Shower Auto Temperature Mixer with Integrated Rainshower Kit (3- Way), Acacia Evolution High-Spout Basin Mixer (Side Lever), and Acacia SupaSleek One-Piece Toilet (S-Trap 305mm)

As the national level winner, De Jesus qualified for the Asia-Pacific (APAC) round where her design was judged by a regional panel of judges, among them LWT APAC leader Satoshi Konagai, LIXIL Global Design Asia leader Antoinne Besseyre Des Horts, and LWT APAC leader, Category Management Jihae Kim.

Renowned interior designers and architects from international firms across participating countries in Asia Pacific were also among the regional judges. Joining Almario, Saldaña, and Ti were Mai Chongchaiyo, Steve Leung Design Group’s director of design; Hayley Mitchell and Samantha Eades, directors of Mitchell and Eades; Hun Chansan, re : edge Architecture’s founder and principal Architect; Martin Aerne, founding director of Aerne Architects & Associates Co. Ltd.; Ashok Prabhu, CEO of DWP Interics; Gaurav Premchandani, MD India at JOI Design; Thiyagarajan Rajagopalan, director of DPA Consultants Pvt. Maximizing Efficiency in Setting Up New Business Premises

Monday, June 19

business premises

When a home-based business outgrows its birthplace or an online store seeks to expand its physical footprint, a move to new business premises becomes necessary. While the recent move towards home working has made commercial renting and real estate more of a buyers’ market, it’s still one that requires you to be flexible and smart in your choices, particularly when it comes to scheduling. Time being the lifeblood of business, a speedy transition is paramount to avoid costly delays and start reaping profits swiftly.

In order to make the overall process faster and less stressful - and, just as importantly, more affordable for you as a business - it is essential to keep some principles in mind.

Finding Ready-to-go Premises

The key to a rapid move lies in choosing nearly ready-to-use premises. The less work required before occupancy, the lesser the potential for unforeseen jobs that can disrupt schedules. Opt for spaces where lighting infrastructure simply needs a refresh with LED retrofit kits instead of a total replacement. Prioritize recent vacancies over fixer-uppers, reducing downtime and keeping your focus on your primary business operations. The need for minor repairs can even serve as a bargaining chip to negotiate a better lease or purchase price. Especially if the lease holder has recently had clients move out, they’ll be keen to see movement and will likely be flexible for a quick sale.

Scheduling the Renovation

Effective planning can expedite the renovation process. Minimize delays by taking on DIY tasks or ensuring that contracted teams hit the ground running on day one. Pre-arrange any necessary inspections and certifications, lining them up to occur immediately post-repair. This strategy not only shortens waiting times for available inspectors but also establishes a firm deadline for the completion of the renovations. Few things focus the mind quite like a deadline, and readiness to move fast is going to be essential throughout this process.

Visualizing the Finished Premises

Having a clear vision of your finished premises prior to initiating repairs is crucial. This foresight allows you to prioritize high-traffic zones and streamline the overall setup. As each area is refurbished, furniture, equipment, and other necessary items can be moved in simultaneously. This strategy negates the need for a secondary move-in process, reducing further delays. Additionally, it allows you to make any repairs that may result from the move-in - because damage to flooring and walls from incautious handling of desks is something that always seems to happen.

Conclusion

Timely setup and operationalization of new business premises hinge on three core strategies: selecting nearly ready spaces, scheduling renovations smartly, and visualizing the finished setup in advance. The more proactive and efficient you are, the faster your transition will be, turning your new premises from a potential overhead expense into a profitable asset. After all, every moment your business isn't running is a moment of lost potential profit. So, choose your space wisely, plan ahead, and soon you'll be flipping the switch on your new lights and welcoming clients into your new location.

As a Bespoke refrigerator, the Bespoke Infinite Line fridge naturally features a modular design made from high-quality materials that can be customized and combined to suit consumers’ changing needs. Infinite Design enhances that versatility by ensuring that the refrigerator will remain stylish no matter how consumers’ lifestyles change. With its simple lines, smooth surface, Timeless Greige finish and elegant gold copper edge frame, the Bespoke Infinite Line Refrigerator looks outstanding in any interior and will not become outdated.

The refrigerator’s exterior is made from premium aluminum that is more dent- and scratch-resistant and allows marks and stains to be easily wiped away. The interior is bright and refined with its Black Metal Cooling and Tunnel Lighting – two features that epitomize the refrigerator’s elegant balance of form and function.

Applied to the duct and door, Black Metal Cooling not only creates a sense of depth for a distinctly premium look, but it also helps keep food fresher for longer by quickly compensating for heat loss. The Tunnel Lighting on the frame and shelves enhances the aesthetic while giving users clear views of every corner of their fridge. Not only is the interior striking, but it is also spacious. The fridge and freezer feature a combined capacity of 805 liters, while the wine cellar offers room to store up to 101 bottles.

Raising the Bar for Kitchen Convenience

To offer users an experience that is more in tune with how they use their fridge today, the Bespoke Infinite Line Refrigerator comes packed with features that maximize convenience. Together, these technologies provide instant access to food and refreshments for a truly outstanding user experience.

The new Auto Open Door features a sensor on its side that instantly opens the door with a simple touch. This makes it easy for users to access their fridge even when their hands are full of groceries or sticky from food prep. The door’s built-in sensor means there is no handle to get in the way, while its stylishly simple look reflects modern consumers’ demand for clutter-free designs.

The dishwasher-safe, BPA-free AutoFill Pitcher provides easy access to refreshingly cold filtered water, anytime. It also features a built-in infuser that allows users to create deliciously flavored beverages by adding any fruits and herbs they like. The Dual Auto Ice Maker, meanwhile, ensures that users always have plenty of ice, offering a choice of either whiskey ball ice or cubed ice.

Flexible Cooling for Optimal Freshness

The Bespoke Infinite Line Refrigerator’s flexible storage options allow users to simultaneously store different foods under optimal conditions, keeping everything inside deliciously fresh.

The Flex Pantry is an independently controlled drawer that can be quickly converted to different preset temperatures to suit users’ daily needs. The two built-in temperature modes are ideal for storing a wide range of high-quality ingredients, from meat and fish to fruits and vegetables, preserving their natural flavors and textures for longer.

The wine cellar’s Triple Temperature Zone brings that same level of optimized freshness to wine storage. With three separate climate zones and precise temperature controls, it allows users to simultaneously store different bottles of wine under optimal conditions, delivering the ultimate in wine preservation. The UV Protect Glass Door has triple-glazed glass with UV ray protection. It safeguards it from changes in the outside temperature, so the internal temperature remains stable, and shields it from harmful UV rays.

Seamless SmartThings Integration

The refrigerator’s seamless connectivity makes using it a breeze by simplifying everything from wine storage to managing energy use.

Support for SmartThings Sommelier at Home offers users a richer and more delicious dining experience. Part of the SmartThings app, SmartThings Sommelier at Home takes the guesswork out of storing wine by analyzing wine labels and offering details on optimal storage conditions. When combined with SmartThings Cooking, the service recommends the perfect food to pair with wine, just like a real sommelier.

SmartThings Energy support allows users to easily monitor and manage their refrigerator’s electricity use and offers tips to reduce their carbon footprint and save money. AI Energy Mode takes that efficiency to the next level by analyzing usage patterns and other factors and optimizing settings to save energy.

10 Filipino designs shortlisted as finalists in World Architecture Festival 2022

Monday, December 5

World Architecture Festival 2022

Ten projects by 8 Filipino designers and architects have been shortlisted as finalists in this year’s World Architects Festival (WAF), one of the world’s most prestigious annual festival and awards ceremony in the architecture and development industry. Not only is this the most typologically diverse showing for the Philippines yet, it is also the most number of Filipino designs that have been selected for WAF, topping the previous record.

GROHE, a founding partner of WAF and leading global brand for complete bathroom solutions and kitchen fittings, supports the local designers, some of whom are veterans and previous winners of WAF, namely previous winner BAAD Studio, last year’s WAFX special prize winner WTA Architecture and Design Studio, Highly Commended recipient BUDJI+ROYAL Architecture+Design, Jorge Yulo Architects and Associates, and HANDS Design Studio. In addition, three design firms also make their WAF shortlist debut this year: Studio Fuerzo, DST Design+Build, and Davao-based BERSABARC Design Studio.

This year's WAF theme is “Together” in order to consider how architecture is responding to the renewal of collective life post-pandemic and committing to combating climate change. In line with the theme, it has also been three years since the global community of architects and designers have been able to meet in-person at WAF. It will be an opportunity for speakers and panels to discuss issues and conditions which relate to the collective use of architecture and public space in a variety of settings, including changes as a result of health considerations and how domestic life, workplace culture, and social engagement is operating in our new world.

“The pandemic has changed how we live at home and at work. Each year, climate change is also becoming a more pressing issue and an important consideration in building homes and office buildings. With these in mind, GROHE looks forward to WAF where the talent of Filipino designers and architects will be on full display for the world to see. GROHE is proud to support local architects and designers and their designs that are unique to the Pinoy perspective of what we’ve experienced of the pandemic and climate change in our country,” said Hermie Limbo, LIXIL country general manager.

WAF award categories are Completed Buildings, Future Projects, and Landscape. Aside from the WAF awards, there will also be special prizes, such as the WAFX Award, among others. The WAFX Award celebrates cutting-edge design approaches to address major world issues, such as the climate emergency.

Looking back on the online Crit sessions at the WAF last year, Jorge Yulo, who is also a finalist this year, said, “They look for your narrative and the social and environmental responsibilities you addressed. Aesthetics takes a back seat after the shortlisting.”

“Equilateral House”

Vying for the Completed Buildings award, under the House & Villa, Urban/Suburban category, are Jorge Yulo Architects and Associates with their entry, “Equilateral House,” and BUDJI+ROYAL Architecture+Design with “Pandemic House.” For the House & Villa, Rural/Coastal category, BAAD Studio submitted, “The Mendoza Farmhouse.” For the New and Old category, Studio Fuerzo’s entry is the “New Provincialate House,” while under the Hotel and Leisure category, HANDS Design Studio’s entry is “Casa Tropica.”

BAAD Studio’s “Pilgrim’s Shelter”

In the Future Projects award shortlist, under the Civic and Community category is BAAD Studio’s “Pilgrim’s Shelter.” For Competition Entries, there are BERSABARC’s “Hexarion Martian Colony” and WTA Architecture and Design Studio’s “BSP Security Plant Complex.” WTA Architecture and Design Studio also submitted “Batangas Forest City” for the Masterplanning category. Rounding out the finalists is DST Design + Build’s “The Tree House Project” in the House category.

DST Design + Build’s “The Tree House Project”

Speaking of his WAF experience last year, William Ti, who is also a finalist this year with WTA, said, “I remember a comment about how there seems to be something going on in Philippine architecture with many more projects getting in to WAF. This makes me feel proud about how far we’ve come and look forward to the time when Filipino architecture can be recognized globally.”

The Filipino finalists will join the other shortlisted international contestants for WAF in Lisbon, Portugal from November 30 to December 2. As part of the competition, they will take part in Live Crit Rooms, which are unique live-judged awards programs. The Live Crit Rooms are also opportunities for them to discover inside knowledge of the most outstanding projects in the world and gain invaluable insights from a panel of expert judges, who are world-renowned architects from leading practices.

Launched in 2008, the World Architecture Festival is the world’s largest annual international architectural event and includes panel discussions and talks by leading global architectural thinkers and industry personalities.

This youthful expression highlights simple and graphic forms to create a contemporary look that celebrates attention to detail. Expect bold monochrome patterns mixed with splashes of red for a playful touch, contrasted by soft, sandy beiges and light woods to add warmth. It’s functional and innovative, with a distinctly modern attitude.

Express yourself

The epitome of modern style, this solution introduces the art of self-expression in the bedroom. It’s the ultimate personal space – so let’s celebrate that by making it your own unique pocket of the world with fresh and fun ideas.

Designer Hannah Wilcox’s graphic prints are a great place to start. You might find love at the end of a non-conventional rainbow with the TAPETMAL pillowcase, or get to know some furry friends with the new PURPURBRÄCKA bed linen. Add a lucky burst of red with some bold, block-colour cushions and your room will instantly feel like a joyful place to be.

The TAPETMAL pillowcase is proof that you don’t always have to stay between the lines. A black and white rainbow that knows no bounds? We’ll take it.

Meet the designer: Hannah Wilcox

London-based designer Hannah Wilcox draws her inspiration from nature or visiting museums and art galleries.

“I see patterns everywhere,” she says. “I could be in a town or the countryside, but I’m always taking pictures and seeking out new colours and shapes.”

For her latest set of prints, she was influenced by a little tabby cat who kept coming to her door while she was living in Dublin during lockdown.

“One day he ran through my legs and up to the bedroom – he was everywhere, so I decided to paint him.”

“I then started seeing birds as Dublin has so many seagulls, and I loved the idea that these weren’t glamorous animals, but locals that were part of the neighbourhood.

The prints developed by having the concrete elements of the city, like organic spots on the roadside, mixed with the playfulness of the animals.

"They’re simple, fun and organic.”

“I hope this collection appeals to everyone,” she continues. “I think that purchasing something fun and quirky for the house is a great way to cheer everyone up; and given its simplicity and the use of one colour, people can also make it their own.”

“My favourite print from this collection is the Irish cat. He will always be in my heart now, I’ll never forget him.” — Hannah Wilcox, designer

Outfit your home for the new season

Just like your personal fashion wardrobe, a few small yet contemporary updates to your home can make all the difference for the season ahead. It’s not about transforming your entire look, but being smart and savvy with what you already have.

Instead of replacing your beloved foundation pieces, like KLIPPAN and POÄNG, give them a new lease of life by refreshing them with modern accessories. Perhaps it’s a statement cushion like TALLSPINNARE (courtesy of print designer Hannah Wilcox) or a graphic seat cover, the key is making effortless updates that feel endlessly inspiring.

Naturally calm, naturally made

This modern solution invites you to retreat inwards; to call in the calming effects of the outside world with dreamy bedroom textiles and wall decor made from natural fibres.

Why not weave in artisanal touches with MOLNSKOG, made with sustainable palm leaves? Alternatively, dive under the soft covers of KLYNNETÅG or look to the printed ODDNY cushion – both designed by Hannah Wilcox – for extra zest.

When your bedroom feels this serene, don’t be surprised if the snooze button becomes your best friend.

How to put the fun in home furnishings

Check it out. This Tic Tac Toe-inspired print brings endless opportunity to have fun – you just have to spot your moment, or board in this case. Ready to play? LYCKSELE and SPIKKLUBBA are.

Choose between different variations of the same design, mixing and matching different grid sizes to build a graphic look that inspires your creativity. Throw in some bold red furniture or statement wall art for a guaranteed win. The rules are, there are no rules.

A nostalgic feel

With traditional Gustavian influences, this look calls to mind the nostalgic, calming ambience of Scandinavian cottages. Expect a harmonious combination of dreamy pastels and soft tactile textures, decorated with romantic patterns including wild florals, stripes, and abstract dots.

Think rustic charm meets artisanal craftsmanship.

Layer like a pro

Got a thing for traditional florals? So do we. This season, celebrate the power of print by mixing and matching different blooms and textures to create a look that’s uniquely yours.

Why not start with the new NÄSSELKLOCKA bed linen, then build intrigue with a clashing pattern like the VERSTERVIG rug. The colour palette is still the same but the layered effect keeps it fresh. Dial it up, dial it down – the choice is yours, and that’s the beauty of it.

“Colors tie everything together, whether you’re mixing smaller prints with bigger ones or playing with the same patterns on different backgrounds. The aim is to create softness and have some fun!”
— Joseph Abbott, Interior designer

Coziness in full bloom

Stop for a moment and daydream: you’re transported to a sunkissed field in the countryside, surrounded by wild flowers without a care in the world. What if you could create that nostalgic feeling at home?

This solution is designed to do exactly that. It evokes a cosy, rustic mood with traditional patterns and materials that tie together beautifully with a soft pastel palette. Highlights include the new TIMJANSMOTT floral-print duvet and the OLDERDALEN bedside table. Ready to relax? We thought so.

Elevate any space with the new OLDERLADEN bedside table. This elegant piece of craftsmanship stands out for its sophistication, while blending in beautifully thanks to its calming – and versatile grey-green hue.

Opposites attract

One bed for two? No problem. You can still express your unique style and personality, even if it’s dramatically different to whoever you’re sharing it with. From early risers to night owls, traditionalists to trend-seekers – there’s something for everyone to ensure a perfect night’s sleep in a space that feels truly yours.

Perhaps you’re into stripes, like the LAPPDUNÖRT pillowcase, while your partner prefers soothing florals (hint: they’ll love the SOMMARSLÖJA duvet). Maybe you enjoy relaxing by candlelight, but they get more satisfaction from dimming a lamp. No one way is better than the other, it’s all about cosy compromises that celebrate the best of both.
