Primitive War Brings Dinosaurs to the Vietnam Battlefield in Director Luke Sparke’s Ferocious Survival Thriller

Wednesday, December 10

Dinosaurs, Soldiers, and a Jungle That Eats Everything Alive

What happens when a search mission in the Vietnam jungle turns into a fight against creatures that shouldn’t even exist? That is the heart-pounding premise of Primitive War, the latest survival-action thriller from writer and director Luke Sparke, now roaring onto Lionsgate Play this December.

Set deep in the unforgiving wilderness of Vietnam, the film throws viewers into a chaotic battleground where prehistoric predators hunt alongside the horrors of war. It’s an unexpected mash-up that feels fresh, unhinged, and irresistibly entertaining for anyone who loves adrenaline-driven cinema.

Starring Ryan Kwanten, Tricia Helfer, and Jeremy Piven, Primitive War pushes soldiers into the ultimate survival test. Sparke takes the grit of war movies, fuses it with the ferocity of Jurassic-era creatures, and turns the jungle into a nightmare that bites back.

A Routine Mission Turns Into a Prehistoric Bloodbath

Primitive War follows The Vulture Squad, an elite recon unit sent to locate a missing Green Beret platoon somewhere in remote Vietnam. Instead of enemy combatants, the team stumbles into something far more terrifying: dinosaurs and abandoned Soviet experiments hidden in the jungle.

Cut off from reinforcements, the squad must face lightning-fast predators, land mines, and a landscape where every movement could be their last. The danger becomes relentless, and the soldiers are forced to fight enemies they never trained for.

This survival thriller brings a new angle to both war films and creature features. Instead of focusing solely on military conflict, Primitive War injects prehistoric terror into the mix, creating a world where gunfire, fear, and sharp teeth collide in explosive fashion.

A Childhood Fascination Brought to Life

The spark for Primitive War came from a surprising place. In an interview with SYFY News, director Luke Sparke shared how the idea first hit him:

“I was just scrolling through social media and came across the cover art of a raptor jumping out of the jungles of Vietnam as a soldier. It immediately just grabbed me, because it took me back to my childhood. … I had to know more.”

That curiosity led him to the novel by Ethan Pettus, which eventually became the blueprint for the film. The combination of military history and dinosaur action was too unique to ignore, and Sparke leaned into the challenge of bringing something that bold to the big screen.

Balancing History, Action, and Sheer Mayhem

Despite its wild premise, Sparke wanted the military aspect of the film to feel grounded and respectful. To achieve this, he collaborated closely with a Vietnam War veteran who had worked on numerous war films.

In his interview with Supanova, Sparke explained: “We brought in one of the best military advisers to help me look over the script. He is a Vietnam veteran and has contributed to heaps of war films. He gave me great advice on how to structure the script in a militaristic way.”

This attention to authenticity gives Primitive War more emotional weight. The battles may be fantastical, but the soldiers’ experiences, fears, and strategies still echo the realities of war. The result is a film that blends grounded military drama with creature-action spectacle.

Jeremy Piven’s Surreal Experience Filming Primitive War

Actor Jeremy Piven, who plays General Jericho, described making the film as both exciting and surreal. His character is a seasoned general who loses several Green Berets under mysterious circumstances. When he discovers a dinosaur tooth, his world begins to unravel.

Sharing his experience, Piven said:

“I play Jericho, one of these old-school, passionate generals. He just lost a bunch of his green berets. He’s a guy that’s seen everything, but he’s never seen this. Suddenly he comes across a dinosaur tooth, and nothing’s making sense. I love taking these two worlds and having them clash.”

For Piven, Primitive War pays homage to classic war films like Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket, but flips the script by placing soldiers against prehistoric predators. This collision of genres delivers tension, grit, and plenty of jaw-dropping moments.

Filipinos have always enjoyed genre-bending action films, especially ones with strong survival elements. Primitive War combines everything that appeals to Southeast Asian audiences: jungle landscapes, military grit, unexpected threats, high-stakes chases, and relentless suspense.

The film also speaks to a growing trend in entertainment, where creators take bold risks by mixing genres that typically don’t intersect. For fans of creature features, military thrillers, and childhood dinosaur obsessions, Primitive War hits all the right notes.

This harks back to the Philippines’ affection for kaiju-level excitement, military stories, and edgy survival narratives found in local and international films.

Prepare for the Ultimate Jungle Throwdown

Whether you’re curious about alternate-history storytelling, fascinated by dinosaur lore, or simply craving non-stop action, Primitive War delivers a ferocious cinematic experience. It is unapologetically wild, visually intense, and designed to keep its audience on edge.

Catch Primitive War starting December 12 on Lionsgate Play via PLDT Home, Smart, and Cignal, and brace yourself for a prehistoric ambush in the middle of wartime Vietnam.

Josh Hartnett Takes on Sky-High Danger in Fight or Flight, Streaming This December

Saturday, December 6

Hollywood favorite Josh Hartnett returns to full-throttle action as he battles assassins at 37,000 feet in Lionsgate Play’s newest thriller.

If you’ve been waiting for a movie that delivers pure, chaotic fun, Fight or Flight is ready to take off. This wild action-comedy throws Josh Hartnett into the middle of an airborne battle where nothing is as it seems, proving that the most dangerous fights happen in the tightest spaces  including a commercial airplane packed with killers.

The film lands on Lionsgate Play this December 5, making it a perfect pick for your next adrenaline-filled movie night.

A High-Flying Comeback for Josh Hartnett

Josh Hartnett is best known for psychological thrillers and dramatic roles, but Fight or Flight marks his return to the type of physical, stunt-heavy action fans haven’t seen from him in years. Here, he plays Lucas Reyes, a disgraced former secret service agent whose routine assignment goes sideways the moment he discovers assassins on board — all targeting one mysterious passenger called “The Ghost.”

What follows is a chaotic mix of overhead-bin ambushes, improvised weapons, back-alley humor, and brutal close-quarters combat. Hartnett plays it with a mix of grit and wisecracking charm, giving fans a fresh, unfiltered version of the actor.

A Plane Full of Assassins and Zero Safe Spaces

Once the flight takes off, Lucas realizes he’s trapped thousands of feet above ground with rival killers who all want the same thing. As alliances shift and secrets unfold, the plane becomes a cramped battleground where every aisle, seat row, and drinks cart becomes part of the fight.

The movie blends action with comedic timing, making the chaos feel unpredictable and fun — a refreshing twist for fans who love thrillers but enjoy a dose of humor.
Real Stunts, Real Sweat: A Film That Doubles Down on Practical Action

Directed by James Madigan in his feature debut, Fight or Flight stands out for its dedication to practical stunt work. The team kept CGI to a minimum, choosing instead to let the actors move, fight, and tumble through the narrow aircraft set.

Josh Hartnett shared how invigorating — and challenging — it was to do his own stunts again, saying:

“I was able to do my own stunts for it, which I haven't been able to do since I was in my 20s, and it’s a lot different when you’re in your 40s, but I thought that would be an interesting challenge.”

He even described one of the film’s biggest action sequences:

“They shot all of that in one long tracking shot… we tried to keep the sequences as intact as possible.”

Hartnett likened the choreography to live theater:

“It wasn't just one punch at a time… that sort of choreography, that dance was fun to create.”

A Sharp Ensemble Cast Elevates the Chaos

Adding to the fun is a strong supporting cast, including:
  • Charithra Chandran (Bridgerton)
  • Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica)
  • Julian Kostov (Shadow and Bone)

Each brings their own flair to the film’s claustrophobic, high-altitude madness, making the story feel both intense and unexpectedly funny.

Whether you’re tuning in for the stunts, the humor, or Josh Hartnett’s all-in return to action, Fight or Flight promises a fast, chaotic, and entertaining ride from takeoff to landing. It’s the kind of movie that doesn’t slow down and doesn’t apologize for it.

Catch Fight or Flight on Lionsgate Play starting December 5, and prepare for turbulence.

Christian Bautista and Raisa Spread Joy in New “Rainbow” Music Video

Monday, November 17

Sometimes, it’s the simplest moments that leave the deepest mark on our hearts. Filipino balladeer Christian Bautista and Indonesian pop icon Raisa capture this very sentiment in their latest single, “Rainbow.” Their newly released music video is a gentle reminder that hope, connection, and happiness often live in the ordinary moments we might overlook.

A Quiet Moment in Jakarta

Shot in a cozy cafĂ© in Jakarta, the music video showcases both artists enjoying a calm escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Christian Bautista explains that the concept is about finding “the rainbows” in everyday life—those small sparks of joy that can truly brighten a day.

Directed by Jonathan Tal Placido of Toothless Productions, the team traveled to Jakarta to bring this vision to life. According to Bautista, the video beautifully conveys the song’s message through a mix of cinematic elegance and heartfelt storytelling.

Celebrating Everyday Beauty

The music video mirrors the song’s warmth, inviting viewers to savor life’s little pleasures: sharing coffee with friends, laughing across the table, and simply being present. Each frame encourages us to pause and recognize the quiet joys that are often taken for granted.

Beyond the everyday moments, “Rainbow” celebrates cultural harmony. The collaboration bridges Filipino and Indonesian artistry, and filming in Jakarta adds authenticity, texture, and emotional depth to the visuals. “The city helped us reflect the connection the song celebrates,” Bautista shares.

Chemistry on and Off Stage

Christian Bautista and Raisa first performed together during a 13-city ASEAN concert in Japan, where their friendship and stage chemistry began to flourish. Their rapport translates naturally on screen, making the music video feel intimate and genuine.

Bautista recalls that scheduling was the biggest challenge, but once everything aligned, the result was deeply rewarding. “Seeing it all come together after months of planning was such a special moment,” he says.

Finding Joy in Small Moments

“Rainbow” is more than a music video, it’s a celebration of everyday beauty and the subtle, unspoken bonds that unite people across borders. Bautista and Raisa remind us that joy doesn’t always come from grand gestures; sometimes, it shines brightest in life’s smallest details.

The single “Rainbow” is now streaming on all major platforms via Sony Music Entertainment. Watch the music video on Christian Bautista’s official YouTube channel.
