Grassroots esports teams play to help feed the hungry, break stigma on mental health

Tuesday, February 28

Who would have thought that a mobile game tournament could be an opportunity to change lives?

For GameLab and Redlist, winning the recent GIGA Arena Street League, an esports tournament powered by Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) allowed them not only to showcase their skills in Mobile Legends, but also to extend help to those in need.

“Even if we are just playing, we are still able to help different communities who need our support. This event also opened a lot of doors for us and enabled us to enter the professional scene in Mobile Legends,” said Mark Ferry “Dokmen” Nazar, captain of GameLab.

GameLab was able to donate 325 kilos of sustainably grown rice worth P20,000 to Rise Against Hunger Philippines (RAH). The rice is sourced from rice growers in Santa Cruz Occidental, Mindoro supported by Smart’s ‘Buy Local’ program, who are practicing climate-smart and eco-friendly farming system.

RAH and Smart have been partners since December of last year through the “Rice Together!” program to help feed over 19,000 families in Manila, Pasig, and Laguna.

“Everybody has a role to play in addressing hunger. It is very heartwarming to know that the youth are also getting involved, because we are normally supported by big corporations. This donation will go a long way to feed many families,” said Jomar Fleras, Executive Director, Rise Against Hunger Philippines.

Third placer Redlist chose the Youth for Mental Health Coalition, a group of youth advocates that work to elevate the Filipino youth’s consciousness on mental health and end the stigma on mental illness, as their beneficiary. “Mental health is a very important part of our life. Because of the pandemic, this has become one of the biggest issues among the youth,” said Elmer Christian Dela Merced, team captain of Redlist.

Redlist was able to donate seven (7) Smart Bro Pocket Wifi devices worth P10,000 with P1,000 worth of load cards that can be used by the organization to conduct trainings and activities for the youth.

“We would like to thank Redlist and Smart for this very generous gift. This will help us achieve our mission to raise the consciousness on mental wellness and end the stigma. Paulit-ulit naming sinasabi na ang kalusugang pangkaisipan ay isang kritikal na public health issue, hindi ito nabibigyan ng pansin. Wala mang pisikal na anyo, kinakailangan nating pangalagaan ang ating mental health dahil ito ay apektado at nakakaapekto sa ating pangkalahatang wellness,” said Ms Benica Ventilacion, Vice Chairperson for Finance and Legal Support, Youth for Mental Health Coalition. [We have always reiterated that mental health is a critical public health issue, and it does not get much attention. Even if it is not tangible, we need to take care of our mental health because it can affect our overall wellness.]

Empowering the Filipino youth

Following their win in the Street League tournament, GameLab shared that they have qualified in the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Development League (MDL), the second official league in the Philippines by Moonton. They are also part of the pool for SIBOL, the national team for esports, who might represent the Philippines in the upcoming Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia this year.

“This just shows that events like these go beyond connectivity and the network already. It is about empowering the youth, giving them opportunities to help them support their advocacies, and providing them a platform like GIGA Arena where they can showcase their talents to the world,” said Melvin Consunji Nubla, FVP and Group Head, Go-to-Market and Subscriber Management at Smart.

The Street League tournament held on Smart GIGA Arena (gigaarena.smart) is in line with Smart’s long-standing support for Philippine esports to cultivate the passion and talent of Filipino gamers.

Gaming enthusiasts can continue to join local esports tournaments by logging in to GIGA Arena, the country’s first all-in-one esports platform for Filipino mobile gamers. The platform is open to all Smart and TNT customers and lets users match up with fellow players to compete in daily, weekly, and monthly tournaments for prestige and cash prizes.

To continue enjoying the best gaming experiences powered by Smart, subscribers are encouraged to register their Smart and TNT SIM at http://www.smart.com/ph/simreg and receive 3GB free data upon successful registration.

Play Like a PRO: OhMyV33nus on being an LGBTQ+ pro player in esports

Friday, July 1

OhMyV33nus

Esports has become a significant part of the culture of today’s Filipino youth, with games spanning generations like Counter-Strike and Defense of the Ancient (DotA) and today’s wide variety of locally-popular games like League of Legends (LoL), Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB), and Valorant.

More recently, homegrown athletes started to dominate their respective esports leagues. Among such athletes is top MLBB player Jonmar “OhMyV33nus” Villaluna. Playing for Blacklist International, OhMyV33nus went against all odds to become one of the most successful Filipino esports players today.

Like most esports athletes, OhMyV33nus’ love for the sport started when she was still a kid. Growing up on PC games, with a particular interest in MMORPG and MOBA, OhMyV33nus decided early to become a part of the local esports community.

“Since I was a child, my dream has always been as simple as playing for a team,” OhMyV33nus shared. “Before, I just used to watch a lot of League of Legends international tournaments. Watching their struggles and winning moments motivated me to become who I am today and inspired me long before esports became popular in the Philippines,” she added.

With her own share of struggles and heartbreaks, OhMyV33nus admits that it has not been an easy journey. She was a product of a decade of wins and losses — and after winning the MLBB M3 World Championships as the mid laner of her team, OhMyV33nus is now an international esports champion. With this success, OhMyV33nus serves as an inspiration for a new generation of Filipino gamers — particularly those who are members of the LGBTQ+ community.

To all aspiring LGBTQ+ esports players, OhMyV33nus shares this piece of advice, “Becoming a professional esports athlete requires intense physical and mental preparations and this sport transcends all those defining factors that we normally see in other sports — height, race, social status, and sexuality is irrelevant in this field. Don’t let anyone look down on you just because of your gender or sexuality.”

 Barangay Grassroots Esports League

Winners of the recently held Barangay Grassroots Esports League (BGEL) in Pasig City visited the Pasig City Hall for a quick meet-and-greet session with Mayor Vico Sotto and executives from Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart). A program of Smart together with Omega Academy, BGEL enables local government units (LGUs), particularly youth organizations within the LGU, to connect with their constituents through esports.

Tatin Manalo of Santolan’s Pride, the champions of the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang tournament shared, “We competed against great players during the league, but we received so much support from our barangay, especially from the Sangguniang Kabataan of Santolan. Because of that, we had no other objective than to win this battle and make our barangay proud.”

For Diego Aguilar, who emerged as the Most Valuable Player from the Call of Duty Mobile (CODM) event, he joined to gain more experience and hopefully, get a chance to be a professional player.

“It feels great to win the CODM BGEL tournament. We didn't have a coach or any practice, but we managed to win,” Aguilar said.

For his teammate Lawrence Remolin, the tournament was a way to help his family financially. “For me, I wanted to see how much I’ve improved as a CODM player, plus I really wanted to win the cash prize to help our family pay the bills.”

BGEL is also supported by the Pasig Youth Development Council, with the guidance of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Esports Organization (PESO). On the other hand, Omega Academy is the developmental department of Smart Omega which aims to find and develop young talents in the Filipino esports industry. Smart Omega is the Smart-supported professional esports team which competes in The Nationals, the top esports league in the Philippines.

Omega Academy also pushes for a healthy balance between physical and online activities for the holistic development of potential esports athletes. Smart Omega has also been joining programs such as Better Today, the mental health advocacy program of PLDT and Smart, to help promote mental health across all generations.

“We are grateful for the support of the leadership of Pasig City for this event. The Barangay Grassroots Esports League is our way to help communities empower the youth with competitive activities during the pandemic,” said Jude Turcuato, First Vice President and Head of Sports at PLDT and Smart.

“Having a good internet connection puts us at an advantage against our opponents during the online game. It is essential in esports or online tournaments because it serves as one of our tools to enable us to win,” said Charles Angeles, a member of the CODM team.

Smart also provides Filipino gamers with the best mobile gaming experience on 5G devices with its continuous network improvement.
