Boehringer Ingelheim launches its first-in-class broad-spectrum topical parasite treatment for cats

Monday, July 3

topical parasite treatment for cats

NexGard® COMBO for cats is a one-and-done, easy-to-use formula with the eprinomectin, praziquantel and next-generation active antiparasitic ingredient: esafoxolaner, which has been specially formulated for cats.

Boehringer Ingelheim, a global leader in animal health, has launched the parasite treatment, NexGard® COMBO for cats. With nearly 20 years of expertise in preventing parasites such as fleas, ticks, Lyme disease and more in dogs, NexGard® now adds a feline-specific product to the NexGard® family. The new treatment is designed to safeguard cats from a wider range of parasites than any other product on the market, covering both external parasites and internal parasites such as fleas, ticks, ear mites, face mange, hookworm, roundworm, vesical worm, lungworm, heartworm prevention, as well as tapeworm infections that affect their health and quality of life.

Parasite infections are common in cats and prevalent across Asia. According to an epidemiological study of over 1,000 cats in eastern and Southeast Asia, 43% of pet cats suffer from external parasites such as fleas, ticks and mites and 14% harbour deadly internal parasites such as hookworm, heartworm and roundworm.

“Boehringer Ingelheim has always been on the cutting edge of research and development in the parasiticide space. Trusted by pet owners and veterinarians alike, our NexGard® family of products is currently ranked top in pet parasiticide sales worldwide. In Asia where over 26% of pet owners have cats, we are thrilled to expand our feline parasite prevention line-up, which includes Broadline® and FRONTLINE PLUS® Cat, with NexGard® COMBO for cats. It is an innovative one-and-done formula with esafoxolaner, the first isoxazoline parasiticide formulated for cats plus eprinomectin and praziquantel for the broadest external and internal parasite coverage to date,” said Sukje Sung, Head of Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Philippines, Inc.

Common misconceptions about parasites in cats

Parasite infections are often disregarded as trivial issues but can cause serious health complications in cats such as bloody diarrhoea, dehydration, skin inflammation and anaemia. Ear mites are common causes of feline ear infections which are often picked up when roaming outdoors and can cause itchiness, inflammation and swelling of the ear canal.3 Additionally, some internal parasites such as hookworms can attach themselves to the intestines and to feed on the blood of cats. Left untreated, hookworm infections can result in potentially life-threatening blood loss, weakness, and malnutrition.4

Despite the high prevalence of parasite infections, many pet owners remain unaware of how common they are. In fact, according to veterinary specialist Dr. Ross Antonio Banayo, Technical Manager for the Companion Animal Business Segment of Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Philippines, Inc. pet owners remain misinformed about how these parasites are transmitted and impact their cats. These common misconceptions include:

● Cats that are kept indoors are not susceptible to parasite infections and do not require regular veterinary visits.

● Cats only require treatment when they are infected with parasites. Preventive treatment is not necessary.

● Parasite infections are self-limiting and do not cause serious health issues.

● Removal of ticks and fleas can be effectively managed with parasite prevention shampoos alone.

According to Dr. Ross Antonio Banayo, Technical Manager for the Companion Animal Business Segment of Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Philippines, Inc. “Parasite infections can be particularly dangerous for cats. Common feline behaviours like grooming and roaming outdoors put them at a higher risk of contracting a variety of parasites. Often, cats only present with symptoms much later into the infection, resulting in worse complications. This highlights the need for us to change perceptions and move towards a preventive approach to parasite infections to safeguard their health.”

Parasites can be transmitted and affect human health too

Parasite infections not only impact the health of cats but can be transmitted to humans to cause complications such as skin infections, anaemia, gastrointestinal disturbances and more. Fortunately, transmission can be effectively prevented by administering regular parasiticide treatment for cats and adhering to regular follow-ups with a veterinarian.

“The lives of pets and humans are so deeply interconnected that their health issues can impact our own. Just as we are shifting towards a preventive approach to human health, NexGard® COMBO is our preventive solution to preserve the health of cats. It represents the next step that we are taking to improve the health of animals across the region and drive a positive impact on our own health into the future,” said Sung.

The monthly treatment protects pet cats and their households from the deadly, debilitating, and transmittable internal and external parasites.

Important Safety Information

NexGard® COMBO is for topical use only in cats. The most frequently reported adverse reactions include vomiting, application site reactions, and anorexia. If ingested, hypersalivation may occur.

Avoid direct contact with application site for 4 hours or until visibly dry.

Esafoxolaner is a member of the isoxazoline class. This class has been associated with neurologic adverse reactions including tremors, ataxia, and seizures in cats with or without a history of seizures.

Use with caution in cats with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders.

The safety of NexGard® COMBO has been tested and is approved in breeding, pregnant, or lactating queen (cats) in the Philippines. The safety of the product has not been established in breeding male cats.

3 easy ways to keep your cats happy and healthy

Wednesday, January 11

Cats make excellent companions and are sure to bring joy and laughter to your home. That’s why it’s important to make sure they get that extra tender, love, and care so they stay healthy, strong, and enjoy the best furry life.

From giving them nutritious and tasty food that they love, to watching their health and lifestyle, here are easy and useful tips from Goodest, an a-fur-dable wet cat food brand, to make sure you win your cat’s love and keep them in top shape:

cat exercise

Help your cat exercise more. Cats need to work out too. Regular play time can help keep their weight on the right side of the scale and work off that extra energy. Exercise is also good for their mental well-being so they don’t get depressed and bored. Play with your cat for 10 to 15 minutes at a time and give them some new toys – perhaps a mouse-shaped toy or a pointer laser that can give your cat endless entertainment. Taking your kitty on a walk for a few minutes is also a great way to keep your feline friend active. Just make sure to put on a soft harness so your cat enjoys that exciting yet comfortable “catwalk”.

cat hygiene

Keep up with your cat’s hygiene. Despite being known for their independent, self-sufficient ways, cats need a bit of help, especially when it comes to cleaning and grooming. Give your cat the occasional bath when their fur gets dirty, sticky, or smelly. Make sure to use lukewarm water. Don’t forget to trim furbaby’s claws to prevent dirt from accumulating - and of course, for your and your kitty’s safety. It’s also important to monitor your cat’s ears on a regular basis for debris, discharge, swelling, excess wax, odors, or pests such as ear mites. Clean your kitty’s litter box regularly to avoid risks brought by parasites and allergens.

cat nutrition

Give them balanced and proper nutrition. Along with taking care of your cat’s active lifestyle and proper hygiene, giving your beloved cat the proper nutrition that they need for every life stage is also the key to keeping them happy and healthy. Not only does giving your cat proper nutrition help lessen the risks of them getting sick and having illnesses, but it can also save you from a trip to the vet that may often put a dent in your pocket. Good thing, Goodest Cat provides your cat a balanced and proper nutrition that they need with its a-fur-dable and 100% nutritious cat food that comes in 3 flavors – Tender Tuna, Chicken Chomp, and Meaty Mackerel!

This extra scrumptious and a-fur-dable meals-in-a-pouch is made with only the freshest ingredients that your cat will surely love – enriched with vitamins and minerals for complete nourishment. Goodest Cat is also approved by experts and follows the standards of quality and safe pet food set by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) which establishes guidelines for ingredient definitions, product labels, feeding trials, and laboratory analyses of the nutrients that go into your cat’s food.

Spend a paw-fect day with your fur baby at the Tiendesitas Pet Village

Wednesday, August 17

Pets and their owners have a secret language only they understand. A simple wag of the tail or even a particular bark or meow is enough to convey a message.

Want to teach your pets a new trick? Teach them the word “Tiendesitas” to let them know that they’re in for a treat! Since it opened in 2005, Tiendesitas Pet Village has earned its well-deserved reputation for being a pet paradise with its clusters of stores that cater to pet needs. From pampering, food treats, grooming and meeting their fur friends to play with, a visit to Tiendesitas is guaranteed to be a great day! Try out this itinerary for a fun-filled day with your pet:

First, a health check for your fur baby. Before shopping and playtime, make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up to date and that they are free of parvovirus, distemper, and fleas and ticks! Yes, we know that pets hate being poked at but the good vets at Animal Care Specialists have mastered the art of calming pets down before a routine checkup or injection. Like with humans, prevention is better than cure with pets.

Take your pet shopping. After being such a good doggo at the vet’s, reward them at Pet Co, which offers pet furniture (what’s another cute dog bed that your dog won’t use because they want to be on yours?); wet and dry food; starter kits for new puppy and kitten parents; pet accessories such as collars and leads, diapers and clothing; health supplies like medicines, vitamins, dental care products, flea and tick drops; and grooming products such as toothpaste, shampoo, brushes and more.

Socialize with other pooches! Now that your pet is looking their best after a session at the groomers, it’s time to meet up and play with their friends. Tiendesitas Pet Village also has an open space for your fur friends such as the Paw Park, and hosts regular play dates like Pet Meetup events with dog whisperer and trainer Lestre Zapanta. Pet playdates are a great way for shy pets (especially rescue ones that have had traumatic experiences) to come out of their shell and learn to be around other pets and humans. It’s a fun time for dogs to be dogs—and humans may socialize with each other too. Keep up to date with these amazing play dates by visiting https://www.ortigasmalls.com/events/tiendesitas/.

Have your pet groomed by professionals. After roughhousing with other dogs, your baby is probably covered with slobber and can use a nice warm bath. The DivineLife staff will trim their excess floof, cut their nails, detangle matted fur, clean their ears and sacs, brush their teeth and make that fur look like a million bucks. DivineLife offers affordable packages and has a staff that genuinely loves animals.

Let your fur baby nap while you shop. A trip to Tiendesitas is not complete without shopping for food or picking up one or two fashion and home accessories. Or maybe even a rare plant. Now that your pet is properly groomed and tired, take them to Petville by Purple Groom for a nap while you shop. Petville is heaven-sent for pet owners who have no one to leave their pets with when they are away. Petville will look after your pet on an hourly basis, daily or weekly. It’s a pet hotel that truly looks after their well-being by providing comfortable accommodations, quality food, and the staff can follow your pet’s routine if you leave them instructions. Make sure to book in advance for short and long stays.

Enjoy more perks for your pets when you become a member of the Ortigas Malls Elite Pet Society. Applicable in all Ortigas Malls - Tiendesitas, Greenhills and Estancia Mall, the membership gives your pets their unique pet ID, exclusive freebies, pet shopping discounts, and even a cake on their birthday when you complete a stamp card! Download the Ortigas Malls mobile app available on Apple App Store and Google Play Store to register.

Tiendesitas is open from 10am to 9pm on Mondays to Fridays, and from 10am to 10pm on Saturdays to Sundays. For more information, follow @TiendesitasPH on Instagram, or visit https://www.ortigasmalls.com/tiendesitas/.

Ways to give your dog furpect love and protection

Friday, July 2

Our pet dogs bring us unparalleled happiness and joy. They are our adorable and fluffy companions that can effortlessly boost our mood despite all the stresses we deal with daily.

Thus, for us dog owners, there is nothing more important than the health and safety of our fluffy furball. We always want to give them the best so that they make the most out of their lives while they are with us.

To help dog owners better take care of their beloved pets, Malayan Insurance conducted the FURfect Love Protection Webinar where Dr. Obet Robles shared insights on how we can tend properly to our fur babies from a veterinarian’s perspective.

Here are five takeaways on looking out for our precious dog’s overall protection.

1. Understand the basic needs of our dog

It is our responsibility as dog owners to understand the basic needs of our pets. These include water and food, shelter, and a good amount of socialization.

When it comes to food, dogs should have a complete and balanced meal which can be found through commercial dog food. This is designed to provide all the nutritional needs of our pets.

We should also be wary of table scraps that are harmful to them such as chocolates, cooked chicken bones, onion and garlic, grapes, raisins, and avocado.

Dr. Robles also mentioned that dogs should be active for at least 30 minutes to two hours every day to ensure that they have enough exercise and to keep them mentally stimulated.

2. Trust the Vet

No one will understand us better than veterinarians when it comes to taking care of our pets. They have the knowledge and expertise on how we can keep our dogs out of danger which is why it is necessary to trust your vet.

This means seeking veterinary care to vaccinate them against diseases and have our pets checked when they show symptoms of an illness. Veterinarians can properly diagnose animal health problems which in turn can treat our pet’s suffering.

3. Be wary of common accidents in dogs

Owning a pet was never risk-free, thus, it is important to watch out for the common accidents that could happen to our dogs. These include car accidents, dog fights, and toxicity from food.

These can cause serious injuries to our pets which is why when we meet any of these, make sure to bring them to the nearest veterinarian so they can be treated immediately.

We can also get our dogs insurance protection which can help us manage these uncertainties.

Malayan Pet Care Insurance

Malayan’s Pet Care Insurance is a 3-in-1 insurance plan for pets and pet owners. It provides coverages such as medical reimbursement for any veterinary treatment, liability coverage, and personal accident (PA) insurance for dog owners.

Medical reimbursement covers up to P300,000 of medical expenses incurred to treat or diagnose the insured dog in case it gets into an accident or acquires sudden illness.

The owner’s liability benefit covers damages and costs incurred for any liabilities to third parties due to the actions of the insured pet such as accidentally attacking other people.

The PA covers the insured dog owner in the event of accidental death, disablement, and dismemberment while the policy is in force.

Dogs qualified under Pet Care have to be between six months to eight years old and currently vaccinated as prescribed by the Philippine Animal Hospital Association (PAHA).

The introduction of an insurance product for pets in the country, specifically for dogs, is part of Malayan Insurance’s plan to produce more innovative products that the company can offer to the general public. It is the company’s way of continuing to push efforts in providing relevant insurance protection to Filipinos in every possible way.

4. Checking our pets

Dr. Obet advised asking these three questions to assess the overall health of our dogs: Is my dog eating well? Is it receiving the proper nutrients it needs? Is my dog playing and energetic?

Likewise, there are indicators we can keep in mind which are appetite, body conditioning scoring (BCS), and energy.

For BCS, the ideal appearance of dogs is if their ribs and spine can be easily felt but not necessarily seen. The waist can be seen when viewed from above and the abdomen is not sagging when viewed from the side. Also, it should look normal, ideal, and even muscular.

5. Watch out for common disease symptoms

Some common symptoms of diseases in dogs are lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, anemia, and respiratory distress. If these signs are observed from our pets, it will be better to have them checked as they might be from a fatal disease.

It can be viral, bacterial, or parasitic diseases if not from the lack of the right nutrition. Some common viral diseases in dogs are canine parvovirus, distemper virus, and Coronavirus.

Meanwhile, for bacterial diseases, pet owners should watch out for the likes of Leptospirosis, blood parasite, Bordetella, Salmonella, or E. Coli bacteria. There are also parasitic infections such as intestinal worms, heartworm, mites, ticks, and fleas.

For nutritional cases, there are diseases that our dogs may get which are urinary problems, bladder stones, diabetes, obesity, and malnutrition.

Royal Canin connects pet owners to trusted veterinary professionals, champions improved healthcare of pets in the Philippines

Friday, May 7

Global leading pet nutrition manufacturer and provider Royal Canin recently launched its Bring My Pet to the Vet (BMPV) campaign as part of its commitment to champion responsible pet ownership among Filipino pet parents. Pet owners across the Philippines can now access over 20,000 free pet checkups and 4,000 BMPV care kits for their furry friends through the Royal Canin Club mobile application, as well as other pet rewards made available on the platform.

Over the past year, more Filipinos are turning to pets as their trusted quarantine companions. However, a survey by Kantar shows that 93% and 50% of cat and dog owners, respectively, do not get their pets checked regularly. The survey also highlights that most owners only bring their pets to the veterinarian for vaccinations and medical procedures, reflecting how wellness checkups are not common in the Philippines.

With this, Royal Canin introduced the BMPV campaign to encourage both new and old pet owners to bring their pets to the vet as early and as regular as they can, and understand the importance of pet preventive healthcare and medicalization. The campaign also underlines the role that veterinarians play in Filipinos' pets' lives, as it provides a platform for pet owners to connect with their trusted vet partners and clinics, ultimately building a more connected and engaged pet community in the Philippines.

This year, Royal Canin leverages its mobile platform, the Royal Canin Club app, to strengthen its 2019 Bring My Dog to the Vet (BMDV) campaign and relate to more pet owners nationwide. To claim the free checkup, pet owners just need to claim the free consultation voucher under the mobile application’s rewards, find the nearest clinic in the store locator by selecting the Vet feature, and reach out to the clinics directly to book their appointments for consultation. On the day of their appointment, pet owners need to present their generated checkup QR code on their Royal Canin Club app to avail of the free consultation. Afterward, users are encouraged to complete their post-checkup survey for more amazing perks and rewards in the application.

Royal Canin’s BMPV campaign seeks to redefine its previous campaign, which gave away 3,000 free consultations for Filipino pet owners through the company’s website. Now made available on the Royal

Canin Club app, it becomes a culmination of two purposeful pet preventive healthcare campaigns. It hopes to further educate pet owners about the signals to watch out from their pets to guide them and encourage them to work closely with their vets in achieving optimum health for their beloved furry friends.

“We, at Royal Canin, recognize the value of preventive pet healthcare and the important role that our veterinary partners and clinics play in one’s pet’s life. Through our new Bring My Pet to the Vet campaign, we hope to instill this mindset and become a platform for pet owners to build a stronger bond with their veterinarians as we work together to safeguard the health of their pets even during such unprecedented time,” says Adriann Eusebio, Royal Canin Philippines’ Country Director. “We want to highlight how important it is for pet owners to have access to credible and reliable pet information, as we continue to improve our services with our loyal customers and partners giving us actionable insights about pet healthcare along the way.”

As the vet checkups require physical visits, Royal Canin ensures everyone that their partner veterinarians and pet shops follow the strict safety protocols of the government when taking in patients and customers. The company works closely with vet clinics to ensure that all pet owners secure appointments first before their visit to avoid overcrowding in their establishments.

“We understand the safety concerns of our partners and customers about going out to visit their vets amid the pandemic. With the lockdowns still in place, our BMPV campaign also ensures to encourage pet owners to become responsible citizens, as much as they are as pet parents, and abide by proper COVID-19 protocols of their vet partners and clinics to avoid the spread of the virus, “ adds Eusebio. “At Royal Canin, we aim to enforce extra precautions to address our customers’ concerns and are committed to improving our services by opening our lines of communication for improvement.”

For more information on Royal Canin’s Bring My Pet to the Vet campaign, pet owners may download the Royal Canin Club application, read about pet healthcare information, and claim their voucher through the platform. One may also visit the Royal Canin Philippines on Facebook and Instagram at @RoyalCaninPH for more details about the Royal Canin Club app and other updates about the brand.

4 key things every puppy parent should know

Monday, March 8

Time flies when there’s a puppy in your home. But just like human babies, they also have a lot of learning to do especially in their early months—and this also goes for every pet owner. With this in mind, Royal Canin recently kicked off Start of Life, a Facebook webinar series about different stages and milestones of your furry companions. The first leg of the series, Royal Beginnings: Kickstart your Puppy's Best Life, was specifically for puppy owners.

Puppy-proofing your home

The opening topic was all about preparing your home for your new puppies’ arrival with speaker Meg Laudit of Klondine Walker. Laudit gave some useful tips on how to puppy-proof your home, from making sure that all cleaning supplies are stored in high cabinets or behind secured doors, to keeping sharp and small objects out of reach.

She also added that while it’s tempting to add more plants indoors, puppy owners should research plants that are poisonous to dogs. This includes common plants such as aloe vera and ivy. Laudit also talked about buying the right gear like food and water bowls as well as collars, leashes, grooming supplies, and other things that can help to make your new puppy feel at home.

Choose tailored fit nutrition for your puppies’ unique needs

Another topic, Proper Food and Nutrition, was discussed by veterinarian and dog owner Dr. Kitsie Torres. Dr. Torres explained how diet plays a key role in every dog’s development and how a solid health foundation with tailored fit nutrition during their early developmental years can benefit your furry friend.

According to Dr. Torres, there are four nutritional requirements for puppies which are the following: more energy, immune system support, high digestibility, and more key nutrients. Also, did you know that dogs choose their food according to smell not taste? Other interesting topics under this segment were about feeding guides, proper portioning, and where and when to feed your puppy.

Take time to bond with your puppies

Singer-songwriter duo and dog parents of two adorable Shih Tzu’s, Moira Dela Torre and Jason Marvin, joined our host to share tips on how to help your pet become more socialized, even mentioning that one of their dogs actually grew up with a Persian cat.

Moira also talked about how important it is to bond with your puppies during their early stages of development while training them to be familiar and at ease with their surroundings. As they grow older and become closer to their owners, they will actually be returning the favor by being great companions and supporters for life.

Puppies deserve committed pet parents

Last but not least was Dr. Ed Unson of Animal House Veterinary Clinic who discussed interesting tips about the health and well-being of your new pup. Dr. Unson shared that owning a pet is a commitment and a responsibility so you need to build your team (a.k.a your veterinarian and everyone in the household) as it’s the key to having a happy life with your pet.

You still can watch the full recorded video of the webinar posted on Royal Canin's Facebook page if you want to learn more about how to build a solid health foundation for your puppies during the early stages of their lives.

For kitten owners, there’s also an upcoming webinar happening on March 12, 2021. Catch Royal Beginnings: Kickstart your Kitten's Best Life, hosted by Janeena Chan with guests such as Troy Montero and Aubrey Miles!

Adopt instead of buy: SM City Masinag launches Pawfect Pair online pet adoption

Sunday, February 7

The first option of people wanting to have a pet is to buy. But there are too many pets in the local shelters and city pounds that are waiting to be adopted and yet only a few consider adoption when looking for a pet. SM hopes to help these furry dogs and cats find a loving home by launching the Pawfect Pair digital platform to enable pet adoption online. In partnership with the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), Marikina City Veterinary Office, and the Antipolo City Veterinary Office, the aim is to connect interested pet parents to these organizations.

Reasons why you should adopt a pet

You will save their lives. Did you know that after a period of time the impounded pets get euthanized? If more people adopt instead of buy, these dogs and cats will become part of your family instead of getting euthanized.

It is inexpensive. The fees you need to pay for the adoption is much cheaper than buying a new pet.

You are helping the shelter. The fees that you pay will provide additional funds for the shelter to care for the other pets that are still left.

You are opening up shelter space.  Adopting a pet gives him a new home and at the same time makes room for stray, lost, and even abused animals.

There are hundreds of AsPins (Asong Pinoy) and PusPins (Pusang Pinoy) are available for adoption from both PAWS and Marikina City Veterinary Office. Some of them are featured within the interactive platform in which interested pet parents at the mall can choose from. After deciding on a particular pet to adopt, SM endorses interested pet parents to the organization. Adoption shall be facilitated by these organizations with fees prior turnover.

Pawfect Pair will also be present digitally at SM City Marikina, SM City San Mateo, SM City Taytay, SM Center Angono, SM East Ortigas through their official Facebook pages starting this February. Stay connected with the latest updates through the official social media accounts of your nearest SM Supermall.
