Ballet Manila brings an extended run of Florante at Laura to Hyundai Hall in Areté

Monday, November 18, 2024

Responding to overwhelmingly positive reviews, Ballet Manila is set to rekindle the magic of Florante at Laura, the iconic Filipino epic poem turned ballet, with a much-anticipated restaging, this time at the Hyundai Hall, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University, in Quezon City, from November 22 to 24, 2024. The production recently captivated audiences with its stunning choreography, evocative original music, and breathtaking dancing during its triumphant world premiere at the Aliw Theater last month.

A Filipino literary masterpiece, ‘Florante at Laura,’ was written in 1838 by the Prince of Tagalog Poets, Francisco ‘Balagtas’ Baltasar. It is a narrative poem that tells the story of Florante, the Duke of Albania, who is captured by Turks. His beloved Laura is forced to marry Count Adolfo, the usurper. With the help of the warrior Aladin, Florante escapes, returns to confront Adolfo, and seeks redemption as he reunites with Laura.

Under Lisa Macuja Elizalde's artistic direction, Ballet Manila has assembled a world-class creative team to bring this epic Filipino tale to the stage.

“Florante at Laura” is more than just a performance; it is a cultural experience that celebrates the rich literary heritage of the Philippines. Not only does this performance pay tribute to the timeless masterpiece by Francisco ‘Balagtas’ Baltasar, but it also showcases the exceptional talents of the dancers, choreographers, and creative minds behind this production.” Ballet Manila CEO and artistic director Lisa Macuja Elizalde said.

The performance will feature the recording of the original score composed by the esteemed National Artist for Ryan Cayabyab as performed by the talented Orchestra of the Filipino Youth, conducted by Maestro Toma Cayabyab. This powerful combination of music and dance has captivated and moved audiences, making each part of the performance an unforgettable experience.

“This full-length composition is one of my legacy pieces. It is my gift to the Filipinos, and I want Ballet Manila to share it with generations to come,” said Cayabyab.

Members of the ballet's creative team include choreographers Gerardo Francisco Jr. and Martin Lawrance; libretto consultant and the foremost Balagtas expert, Dr. Michael Coroza; award-winning set designer Mio Infante; lighting director John Batalla; and costume designers Make It Happen.

Margie Didal Makes Triumphant Comeback with First-Place Win at the Red Bull Buenos Aires Conquest

Filipino skater and Red Bull athlete Margielyn “Margie” Didal has made a triumphant return to the international skateboarding scene, skating her way to first place for women’s division at the Red Bull Buenos Aires Conquest. Didal makes her return to the podium following her journey to recovery from an ankle injury.

Last November 9, a crowd of 2,000 people gathered at the University of Buenos Aires Law School to witness the Red Bull Buenos Aires Conquest, a prestigious, unconventional street skateboarding competition. The competition brought together 24 of the world’s best skaters, including skaters from South Africa, the Netherlands, France, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, and the Philippines.

Didal won first place in the women’s division of the competition, besting some of the top women skaters in the world including Argentina’s Aldana Bertran and Brazil’s Leticia Bufoni, in the qualifying round, and Argentinian Camila Cáceres in the semi finals. It was down to Didal and Dutch skateboarder Roos Zwetsloot for the finals, with the Filipino athlete ultimately taking home the trophy.

Brazilian skater Gabryel Aguilar reclaimed his spot as the men’s division champion after winning the title the previous year. He competed against Mexican athlete Brayan Coria in the final round, after Aguilar defeated Argentina’s Axel Mansilla and Uruguay’s Emilio Dufour in the qualifying round. Aguilar was up against Dufour again in the semifinals, which the Brazilian skater won.

The fourth edition of the global skating competition featured riskier tricks and showcased the culture and history of the host city, coursing through iconic local skateboarding obstacles. The University of Buenos Aires Law School was transformed into a 800m² custom-designed skatepark inspired by the host city’s most iconic spots. The skaters competed on replicas of renowned locations such as the Customs Plaza, the “Hubba” from Policlínico Bancario, the Ministry of Economy stairs, and the pyramid at the National Library.

During the competition, the skaters battled in a 1v1 elimination format and had three minutes to showcase their skills on the course. Winners were decided by a judging panel consisting of key figures in the skating acne including Argentina’s Diego Bucchieri and Enrique Rosso, USA’s Anthony Claravall, and Brazil’s Biano Bianchin and Larissa Carollo.

Buenos Aires was the final stop in the global competition, after stops in Paris, Lisbon, and Rio de Janeiro with iconic backdrops in each stop. The competition served as a celebration of skate culture, allowing skaters from across the world to demonstrate their skill and style on a global platform.

A Mother's Quest for Truth Leads to an Alliance with Her Daughter’s Killer in 'Without Sin’

Without Sin

Get ready to unravel a deadly web of deception with ‘Without Sin’, the gripping psychological thriller streams exclusively on Lionsgate Play this month.

What if everything you believed about the biggest tragedy of your life was suddenly thrown in doubt? In the gripping four-part psychological thriller Without Sin, viewers will be thrust into the tumultuous world of Stella Tomlinson, portrayed by the talented BAFTA winner Vicky McClure. As a mother shattered by her daughter’s murder, Stella is drawn into a web of mystery and deception when she meets Charles Stone (BAFTA nominee Johnny Harris), the man convicted of murdering her daughter.

With another teen's life in peril, the unlikely duo is forced to work together in a desperate bid to uncover the true events of that fateful night. What begins as a quest for closure quickly spirals into a complex web of truth and lies, making Stella question everything she thought she knew about that night.

As Stella delves deeper into the investigation, she begins to question not just Charles's guilt, but the very foundation of her beliefs about her daughter's murder. Without Sin takes viewers on a rollercoaster of suspense and raw emotion, leaving audiences pondering the thin line between villain and victim, and the lengths one will go in search of redemption.

On how the series was conceptualized, writer and creator Frances Poletti told LeftLion, “Vicky [McClure] was looking for a project to do back in Nottingham, and she’d watched a Channel 4 documentary about restorative justice and thought there was something really interesting in that. She wanted to dive into the question of what would happen if a mother went to meet the man she believed had killed her child, hoping for an apology, and then he flipped the meeting on its head. So I met with Vicky about the idea, and once I left the room it was all I could think about. Johnny Harris and Vicky have been good mates since the This Is England days, and they wanted to work together again, so I teamed up with them to develop a story.”

In an interview with Big Issue, Vicky McClure spoke about her character saying, “This show used to be called Redemption. And that word is very important. It runs through the heart of the series. Because they both need that. Stella has absolutely nothing to lose. No matter what she finds out, it’s not going to bring her little girl back. At the moment she has very little purpose. Everything’s crumbled around her. So if, all of a sudden, there is a possibility of more answers, she wants to know what those answers are, as painful as it will be.”

Buckle up and prepare for a wild ride as the gripping whodunit, ‘Without Sin’ is set to stream exclusively on Lionsgate Play this November 15.

Mentos Philippines upcycles plastic waste into bus terminal benches to provide commuters a refreshing pit stop

Through its partnership with PCX Markets (PCX), Perfetti Van Melle Philippines has transformed over 1,000 kilograms of plastic waste into 100 Mentos benches, distributed to bus terminals nationwide.

As part of its Mentos “Yes to Fresh” campaign, Perfetti van Melle is exploring new ways to refresh Filipino commuters, especially during the recent All Saints’ Day long weekend (Undas) when millions of Filipinos travelled to their provinces to visit friends and family, and in preparation for the upcoming Holiday season. Mentos looks forward to provide some much-needed freshness to commuters in major bus terminals in Batangas, Naga, Bacolod, and Cagayan de Oro. Besides sharing its beloved Mentos candies and other goodies, the brand donated 100 Mentos-blue benches made from 100% recycled plastic, giving commuters a chance to rest, refresh, and say ‘Yes to Fresh’ while waiting for their buses.

The Mentos benches, which will remain as permanent fixtures at the bus terminals, also offer a fresh lease of life to plastic waste that might otherwise have ended up in nature or landfills.

“As so many Filipinos enjoy our products every day, we have a unique opportunity to help drive positive change. By integrating sustainability into our brand plans, brands like Mentos can bring joy to consumers while also supporting the development of a circular economy for plastic in the Philippines. These “refreshing” Mentos benches, made entirely from recycled plastic waste, are a great example of how this can be done,” said David Roos, Perfetti Van Melle Philippines’ Managing Director.

Perfetti Van Melle has a strong commitment to sustainability and reducing its environmental footprint globally. The company continues to reduce plastic in its packaging and is dedicated to finding meaningful alternatives to plastic packaging materials. In the Philippines, Perfetti Van Melle partners with PCX Markets to support projects that divert plastic waste from nature. Besides the innovative Upcycled Benches project, the company supports recycling initiatives and social impact projects like the Aling Tindera waste-to-cash program, which empowers women micro-entrepreneurs to become sustainability champions in their communities, as well as company-wide beach clean-ups.

“This initiative is a fantastic example of how businesses can help fund the cleanup of plastic waste, bringing much-needed financing to our country’s emerging waste management sector, while also creating a circular economy by driving demand for the final product,” said Rudi Ramin, Commercial Director, PCX Markets. It encourages the elimination of unnecessary plastic and enables the responsible recovery and processing of any remaining plastic, ensuring it doesn’t end up in nature.

7 Medical Societies Converge to Elevate Lung Cancer Care in the Philippines Through Multi-Disciplinary Approach

In observance of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, experts from esteemed medical societies and patient organizations gathered to raise awareness on the prevention, screening, diagnosis, and management of lung cancer.

In the Philippines, lung cancer remains the second most common type of cancer— and the most prevalent and deadliest type of cancer among Filipino men.¹,³ Around 25% of Filipinos aged 15 years and up smoke tobacco. This places millions of the population at risk for developing lung cancer.² These staggering statistics emphasize the need for continuous and vigilant screening to make sure this, as with all types of cancer, is detected and subsequently treated as early as possible.

Lung and oncology experts from seven medical societies alongside patient advocacy groups gathered at the EDSA Shangri-la Hotel recently to further raise awareness around prevention, screening, diagnosis, and management of lung cancer.

The well-attended event aimed to facilitate a multi-disciplinary discussion on the crucial role of each specialty in the lung cancer care continuum, focusing on lung cancer management.

Dr. Janeth Samson, president of the Philippine College of Chest Physicians (PCCP) opened the program by emphasizing the need for a unified approach among all key stakeholders to battle this condition, including committing due diligence to find the right diagnosis, optimal approach, and minimizing the number and invasiveness of procedures. “Hindi po lahat ng cancer pare-pareho ng treatment. We go to the procedure that will give us the best diagnosis.”

In 2022 alone, 23,728 people were diagnosed with lung cancer and many more remain under the radar.⁶ Mr. Emerito Rojas of the Lung Health Alliance of the Philippines or LungHAP who has been advocated for everyone’s right to breathe cleaner air to preserve and protect lung health, also shed light on the experiences of lung cancer patients and their families, and the importance of a supportive community. “We need to push for early detection and lung screening. We need sustainable funding and we need to develop a strategy. Together with your support, we can make an impact.”

Experts then gathered for an informative and engaging panel to discuss the journey of the lung cancer patient. Dr. Josephine Lapena, President of the Philippine Academy of Family Physicians (PAFP), Dr. Karlos Aleta, President of the Philippine Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons (PATACSI), Dr. Josephine Tolentino, President of the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology (PSMO), and Dr. Herdee Luna, President of the Philippine Society of Oncologists Inc. (PSO) joined PCCP president Dr. Samson to discuss how to execute the multidisciplinary team approach, which is highlighted by taking a deeper look into a patient’s lifestyle and situation.

“Importante na alam namin ang sitwasyon hindi lang ng pasyente, kundi pati ng pamilya. We need to know what the family is dealing with. What they do, where they live,” said Dr. Lapena.

Dr. Tolentino, alongside Dr. Ma. Teresa Benedicto of the Philippine Radiation Oncology Society and Dr. Joey Joson of the Philippine Society of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, discussed the importance of end-to-end care for lung cancer care, taking note of holistic health, especially when in advanced stages. “We advise patients to continue with a healthy lifestyle and to take care of mental health,” said Dr. Tolentino.

“We address not only physical. We also address psychosocial, spiritual, and existential issues, and the family, too, na hindi na-address ng iba naming colleagues. ‘Yun po ‘yung puwede naming maitulong sa kanila,” elaborated Dr. Joson.

Dr. Cyril Tolosa, Medical Affairs Director of AstraZeneca Philippines, underscored how each accurate intervention can help make the healing journey easier for patients. “AstraZeneca is driven by its bold ambition to eliminate lung cancer as a leading cause of death worldwide, and that includes transforming the landscape of lung cancer care here in the Philippines through early intervention and innovative treatment options,” said Dr. Tolosa. “We’re positive that through this multidisciplinary collaboration with seven medical societies and lung cancer patient groups, we can create real world impact to further improve health outcomes of our lung cancer patients.”

He added, “Earlier this year, the collaboration of AstraZeneca and AC Health successfully integrated an AI-based chest x-ray tool into key hospitals within the AC Health network, allowing patients to undergo early screening for lung nodules and assess their risk of malignancy. This collaboration enhances the accessibility of advanced diagnostic technology and enables healthcare providers to offer timely and accurate evaluations potentially improving patient outcomes.”

Fr. Jerry Orbos

Fr. Jerry Orbos, a lung cancer survivor and spiritual adviser of LungHAP, recalled his own journey to conquering lung cancer. He exhorted patients and advocates to bank on faith despite the challenges of the disease. “Don’t give up on hope. Hold on to discipline, take your medicine, follow your doctors, and be patient. It’s a journey. Have a joyful mindset, and of course, faith in God. The big C is nothing compared to the biggest C, who is Christ.”

Carmen Auste of Cancer Coalition Philippines (CCPH), Inc. was also in attendance. She called for stakeholders, specifically authorities, to put a bigger emphasis on the voice of lung cancer patients. “Kailangan natin palakasin ‘yung boses ng survivors. Ang paniniwala po natin, anumang guideline or standard na gagawin, ito ay mas magiging responsive at makabuluhan kung nandoon ang lived experiences ng ating mga pasyente,” said Auste.

All the medical societies and patient advocacy groups then gathered to engage in a commitment exercise, further solidifying their partnership in the fight against lung cancer.

Finally, PCCP’s Dr. Janeth Samson closed the program by facilitating the launch of the PCCP Lung Cancer registry, which will further provide a caring, efficient network for lung cancer patients and their families. “This registry represents a critical step towards enhancing the knowledge base and improving outcomes for individuals affected by lung cancer,” explained Dr. Samson.
