Taiwan Beats Showcase drops official recap video, featuring breakout Asian acts at SXSW

Tuesday, May 6

From Taipei to Texas, Taiwan’s vibrant soundscapes resonate across borders

Taiwan Beats Showcase, a flagship initiative championing Taiwan’s most dynamic music talents on the global stage, has released its highly anticipated recap video, providing an exciting visual diary that captures the energy, artistry, and cultural spirit of its standout representatives.

This year’s spotlight shines on six trailblazing acts: Amazing Show, Enno Cheng, ?te (Whyte), TRASH, HSIEN CHING, and Andr—each one bringing a unique sonic stamp that reflects the ever-evolving landscape of Taiwanese contemporary music. Through the recap, fans across the globe, including the Philippines’ ever-curious music lovers, are invited to relive the magic and momentum of Taiwan’s showcase at SXSW 2025.

Organized under the Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development (BAMID), Ministry of Culture, this year’s edition revolved around the theme, Connection, an ode to the universal language of music and its power to build bridges across cultures, communities, and industry frontiers. True to the collaborative ethos of SXSW, the special showcase functioned as an eclectic hub of cross-border creativity and musical dialogue.

The festivities began with a vibrant Day Party, headlined by Japanese rock band Enfants and Malaysian rapper Zamaera, which set the tone for an international exchange of styles and stories. Running parallel to the performances, the TAICCA Meet-Up forum welcomed global music executives and creatives to discuss the shifting dynamics for Asian artists navigating the North American music market.

As the sun set, the evening showcase unfolded with memorable performances: singer-songwriter HSIEN CHING opened with soul-stirring tracks from her latest album, “If Every Day Could Be Happy Happy, Who’d Want Sad,” accompanied by producer Sōryo. Next came the enigmatic neo-soul artist Whyte (?te), whose boundary-pushing set resonated with the growing international presence.

Pop newcomer Andr brought a breath of fresh air to the lineup, earning a coveted slot at SXSW's official International Night Showcase. She also shared the spotlight with Japan’s Luv and Paris Death Hilton, holding her own as a standout performer. Enno Cheng, a beloved voice in Taiwan’s indie music scene, returned to SXSW post-pandemic with new music from her upcoming album, Moon Phases. Her emotionally resonant performance reaffirmed her status as one of Taiwan’s most introspective and compelling singer-songwriters.

Alternative rock band TRASH ignited the stage with a high-octane set that could rival stadium performances, while The Amazing Show wrapped up the night with an otherworldly spectacle, featuring custom-built instruments and their iconic “cyber Taike” aesthetic.

The momentum continues beyond SXSW: ?te (Whyte) has just released “Let Me Be Me,” a heartfelt collaboration with Japanese artist TENDRE that explores the parent-child dynamics through a soulful lens. Meanwhile, Enno Cheng is steadily expanding her artistic footprint in South Korea, with the release of a new music video for “Rarely Think of It” . She’s also slated to perform at the upcoming Asian Pop Festival in Korea.

Ely Buendia drops sophomore album, Method Adaptor

Sunday, November 10

Ely Buendia Method Adaptor

Listen to the focus track “Kandarapa”

OPM icon Ely Buendia marks an essential chapter in his solo career with the release of his sophomore album, Method Adaptor—out on Friday, November 8, 2024, via Offshore Music and Sony Music Entertainment.

Maintaining the sonic hallmarks that have made him a beloved figure in Pinoy rock, Ely Buendia’s new album examines memories, experiences, and social issues with both self-awareness and maturity. As someone who is known for unpacking cultural and personal narratives in ways that could be incisive but relatable, Ely has truly mastered the art form of reflection, especially when he weaves words and feelings with intricate instrumentation. On Method Adaptor, he delivers mastery in both restraint and complexity, often balancing both skills to create a sonic tapestry that instantly pulls listeners into its orbit.

As Ely explains it best, “I think all the songs have something to do with rebelling—be it from the disappointments and hardships of life or from the control that people want to have on your mind. I would say these are the most defiant songs I’ve written so far.”

Navigating through themes of sorrow, anger, joy, and triumph, the ten-track record shapes up to be one of the most captivating rock releases that came down the pike in recent memory. After being in the music business for more than 30 years, Ely admits that this album explores vulnerability that comes from a place of complicated humanity, revealing moments of fragility and darkness as he deals with the pressures of social expectations and career.

“Fame didn’t mix well with me,” Ely Buendia shares. “I just felt it got in the way of my trying to evolve as an artist and made me more guarded as a whole. Coming out for me means owning everything, both my failures and successes.”

Produced by Jerome Velasco and Audry Dionisio, with a little help from Erwin Romulo, Method Adaptor sounds consistently delightful from top to bottom, but with enough room to surprise or provoke.

"Kandarapa," the album's focus track and one of its highlights, is about fighting through the hard times not knowing if you can make it until the end. The music legend reveals that there are times when pressure in life can be a bit overwhelming, and all you want is to buckle and submit to the whim. “Sometimes you feel like you’re going to have to battle your way through the rest of your life.”

Other featured tracks in the album include previously releases “Tagpi-Tagping Piraso” and “Bulaklak Sa Buwan;” the somber piano ballad “Faithful Song,” the brooding, synth-pop tune “Kontrabando,” and the menacing stomper “Tamang Hinala”—to name a few.

Check out the Method Adaptor track list:

1. Faithful Song
2. Kandarapa
3. Bulaklak Sa Buwan
4. Tamang Hinala
5. Deadbeat Creeper
6. Sige
7. Tagpi-Tagping Piraso

James Reid expresses the joy of summer romance on “Mirasol”

Saturday, October 19

James Reid Mirasol

The delightful pop track serves as the third single off his upcoming EP “jgh,” to be released next month

James Reid continues to earworm his way to pop ubiquity with the release of “Mirasol”—out today via Sony Music Entertainment.

His latest single not only oozes with undeniable charisma but also reinstates his potential as a hitmaker of first-rate caliber, boasting an impressive run of inescapable chart-toppers in the 2010s.

According to James, the song is about falling in love with a sunflower and how romance is something that requires appreciation, protection, and understanding. “Love is an organic process and needs to grow naturally,” he adds.

“Mirasol” is co-written by James and Alison Shore, an R&B artist whose work brims with effortless cool and ‘90s suave. Both accomplished artists thought of using the sunflower as a metaphor “for a relationship that gives off an air of sweet summer romance and innocence.”

As James explains it further, “I want to connect on a different level with my fans that I haven’t been able to do before. Writing in Tagalog (Filipino) was a very welcomed challenge for me, and I’ve enjoyed it so much.”

One Click Straight’s Tim Marquez, a frequent collaborator of James himself, also brought a tapestry of effortlessly blissful sound that complements the romantic nature of the lyrics. The final product evokes the more commercial and critically acclaimed work of James Reid during the Diary Ng Panget era, but rendered with more sophistication and subtlety, production-wise.

“Mirasol” serves as the third single off his upcoming EP, jgh, which is slated to drop on November 22, 2024. The soon-to-be-released EP, which contains tracks such as “Sandal” and “Hurt Me Too,” is described to be a “return-to-form” record, touching on his softer, more vulnerable side and more pop-leaning direction.

James Reid’s “Mirasol” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment and Careless.

Ely Buendia Rocks Through the Apocalypse for Music Video of New Single, Tagpi-Tagping Piraso

Monday, October 7

Ely Buendia Tagpi-Tagping Piraso

In preparation for his upcoming album, “Method Adaptor” Ely Buendia is set to guide listeners through a dystopian, fiery landscape for the official music video of his new single, “Tagpi-Tagping Piraso” to be released on October 24, 2024.

With the sound being heavily reminiscent by fast-paced rock, with the lyrical narrative that touches on retrospection and the beauty of just letting things be, Ely Buendia proudly announces “Tagpi-Tagping Piraso” as an additional single for his upcoming album, “Method Adaptor”, to be released under OM.

The track itself is a telling of the complexities of human emotions especially in areas where said emotions are buried beneath time. It is a track that makes use of an upbeat, almost a callback to 80’s rock, for its signature sound, while lyrically, the song is a direct melancholic acceptance to certain situations that simply cannot be fixed.

Since the release of his latest material, “Bulaklak Sa Buwan”, Ely Buendia has been relentless in honing his musical prowess to guide listeners to a world that goes beyond what an average listener would expect from the OPM icon. His consistency along with his itch for innovation seeps through exponentially on this new single as it not only dives deep into a tale through his signature style of storytelling, but the adaptation of said story through the lens of CGI is a sure fire way to be worth the anticipation from fans, both new and old.

The stunning, futuristic visuals to accompany the track is made possible by the talented folks over at Glitch.Asia—-a new-age video production company that utilizes the power of Virtual production through the power of CGI, augmented reality, motion capture, and other ultramodern filmmaking techniques that makes the process cost and time efficient without undermining traditional means such as integrating real-life and animated components.

The incorporation of these technical advancements as visualizer for the track is also a way for younger fans to connect with Ely Buendia’s current project as a solo artist. “Tagpi-tagping Piraso” aims to string listeners along through an unabashedly raw telling of destructed pieces from past situations all while embracing its brokenness, while ultimately expanding the story through the unique storyline and look in the music video.

The music video will be available at: https://www.youtube.com/@elybuendia9000

The track will be available on all streaming platforms.

Muri to launch debut EP 11ème with shows in Manila and Bali

Monday, September 16

The violinist/singer-songwriter’s forthcoming release is a “concoction of feelings, stories, and languages”

Muri is gearing up for the release of her highly anticipated debut EP, 11ème on all digital music platforms worldwide this Friday, September 20, 2024.

The indie soul-pop release will explore themes of adjustments, desolation, and challenges that one has to go through when settling in a new city far away from the comforts of home. This record is special to Muri as it allowed her to “try new things, challenge her assumptions about songwriting, and inject elements of multiple worlds.”

“Writing this EP was a journey of learning to let go, dealing with change, and rebuilding one’s self,” explains the globetrotting singer-songwriter and violinist. “We all learn to rewrite our own stories, but first we need to grieve, accept, and trust ourselves.”

For her new EP, Muri assembled a team of France-based musicians and worked with them together in different locations, including Beajoulais and Paris. The multi-talented artist, who also happened to be The Ransom Collective’s violinist, also collaborated closely with indie producer Sacha Arnaud in helping her vision come to life.

She also recruited Remi Klein and Tamino Edener as part of the musician pool and recorded the final output at Audioscope in France. The result is a sonically arresting release infused with dreamy synths, spoken word, and snippets of multiple languages.

“I’m excited to just share a little bit of my world with everyone,” Muri shares. “It's a concoction of stories, feelings, and languages. And I want the music to simply be an exchange, a conversation. I want the music to serve as a medium for sharing the insights I've gained from the world and for listening to and understanding the narratives of others as they engage with it."

EP launch and AXEAN Festival 2024

Muri will launch her new record, 11ème at Sari-Sari Cocktails in Makati City on Sunday, September 22. Her band The Ransom Collective will also reunite for a special set, along with performances by some of her music peers, including Leanne & Naara, Kai del Rio, Jerms, and Billz. Muri, on the other hand, will debut the songs from the EP live with her backing band.

Muri will also take the center stage at the AXEAN Festival 2024 in Bali, Indonesia, on September 28-29, 2024. The globally renowned showcase festival has grown to become an internationally recognized platform that features musical talents from Southeast Asia and beyond, while also providing a place for artists and music industry professionals from around the world to connect through genuine face-to-face networking opportunities.

Kai Del Rio releases comeback single “Ang Nag-iisa”

Kai Del Rio

Kai Del Rio (formerly known as Kai Honasan) has finally dropped her new single “Ang Nag-iisa” via Underdog Music.

The bluesy pop-rock anthem serves as the Filipino singer-songwriter’s comeback single, smashing her way out of her confines with unapologetic rage and grit.

A proof of Kai’s versatility as a solo star with so much potential, “Ang Nag-iisa” is a brash, sobering look at a woman coming to terms with her own pain and disappointments in life, carefully put together for the world to deservedly hear.

“Ang Nag-iisa was written from a need to find a place to put down my anger, shares Del Rio. “The past few years as a songwriter, I’ve had massive writer’s block and didn’t know who I was as a singer anymore. One day, I just asked myself, ‘What is the biggest emotion I am feeling right now,’ and the answer was rage. It was pain. It was disappointment. It was sadness. Then just like that, the words flowed.”

Kai adds, “It took me a few weeks to finish, because I kept second guessing myself and thinking, “maybe this is too real?” But to be quite honest, what we need more of is raw emotion. That, I feel, creates the best art. Whether it’s pure, shameless joy or the isolation of heartbreak, what is real will always feel the most authentic.”

“Ang Nag-iisa” is written and performed by Kai Del Rio, and produced by veteran musician Karel Honasan. Kai and Karel also gathered an all-star band to fully execute the ideas behind the drawing board into reality, recruiting the likes of Ira Cruz on guitars, Nikko Rivera on keys, and Rickson Ruiz on drums. With the help of Tower of Doom sound engineer Macoy Manuel, they took the song and turned chaos into art.”

“I don’t know how many times I cried in that session, but I could not have imagined a more amazing group of musicians to take hold of this song, and I will be forever grateful,” says the Liwanag act.

Next week, Kai Del Rio will drop the piano ballad “Storm Like Me” as part of her non-consecutive “double single” release. The stripped-down track, a stark contrast to Ang Nag-iisa's ferocious energy, delves into Del Rio's confessional vulnerability, a skill that she has expertly covered in her previous releases.

The former The Voice of the Philippines season 2 semi-finalist reveals, “As a way to balance out the fire of Ang Nag-iisa, I wanted the other side, a calm energy. A classic ballad. But still the same heart. I gathered the same team again to do lay on the drama for this song and they effortlessly killed it. Once these two songs were done, Gabi Na Naman Productions and Underdog Music came into the picture, and took on the task of making sure these songs were properly unleashed into the world.”

Kai Del Rio’s “Ang Nag-iisa” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Underdog Music.

Paolo Sandejas takes alt-pop sound to exciting new places with “all the time”

Tuesday, September 10

Paolo Sandejas

The rising OPM star pens another lilting charmer suited for late-night drives and bedroom introspection

Filipino singer-songwriter Paolo Sandejas continues to carve his own lane with the release of his new single “all the time,” out today via Sony Music Entertainment.

Stepping up his craft with a more subdued but sophisticated sonic direction, Sandejas delivers another guitar-pop gem that throws listeners into a whirlwind of adolescent love and drama.

In a press statement, the Sunday Star act reveals that the lilting summer tune is all about “getting caught in your thoughts about someone” and wondering if they ever feel the same way.

“I was in a writing flow the day I penned the track and let it pretty much write itself,” the charming indie pop artist shares. “All the lyrics fit so naturally into the arrangement I made, and it was one of the quickest songs I’ve ever finished.”

Written and produced by Paolo Sandejas with constant collaborator Xergio Ramos, “all the time” thrives in its carefree simplicity. Similar to his previously released track “Sirens,” Ramos refined Sandejas’ initial demo and worked closely with him during the entire production process. The result is a lovely little bop suited for a late-night drive.

While it complements Sandejas' boy-next-door appeal and sincere demeanor, the indie pop charmer comes with the intention of making a song that's easy to sing along to with an engaged crowd live.

“all the time” will be part of Paolo Sandejas’ highly anticipated full-length debut album to be released this year. Combining unapologetic lyrics with silky-smooth guitar arrangements and captivating melodic lines, the new album reflects Sandejas’ incredible musicianship that makes him a total standout from the pack.

Paolo Sandejas’ “all the time” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.

Josh Cullen drops first solo album, Lost & Found

Saturday, September 7

Josh Cullen Lost & Found

The nine-track release unravels openness with riveting sincerity

Josh Cullen opens up about his old wounds and internal struggles on his debut solo album, Lost & Found—released under Sony Music Entertainment today.

The nine-track release revels in the space of openness and pain, not afraid to tackle themes that are often considered a sign of weakness. Here, the SB19 leader shares an unadulterated version of himself as he deals with past traumas in life, recovers from its ruins to find light in an often cruel world, and takes control of his creative agency by telling an inspiring story of resilience and hope.

The acclaimed P-Pop singer-songwriter explains, "This album explores themes of pain and suffering, redemption, and the strength of human resilience, inspired by my inner truth. In Lost and Found, I wrote about the pain that never truly goes away, the trauma that lingers long after we think our wounds have healed, and discovering strength within ourselves.”

Lost & Found, taken as a listening experience, shows Josh Cullen’s songwriting strengths in its unfiltered sense. He doesn’t mince words about the pressures and fakery of the industry, and even in exploring his recollections of childhood, he surmounts the dreadful experience of having to go through the bins all over again, with nothing but a pen as armor. Josh treats vulnerability as a form of refuge: it stings and lingers, but its effect only fuels his spirit as a storyteller.

He points out, “I know what it means to be lost and found. I've experienced being lost throughout my life, sometimes trapped between trying to process all these intense emotions while desperately hoping to be found. I hope to connect with my fans and listeners who have been through the same journey or are going through the same.”

Sonically speaking, Lost & Found marks a vital vibe shift from the rap/urban-leanings of his pre-album era to a more amorphous musical strain that blends emo, pop-punk, and alt-rock sensibilities with producer-driven hip-hop and R&B influences. Moving towards genre-defiant territory, Josh’s unmistakable chameleonic presence, coupled with his affinity for emotionally captivating lyrics and inescapable hooks, makes Lost & Found a more intriguing but enjoyable effort.

From the hard-hitting, guitar-rock swells of "1999," where he navigates the harsh realities of life, to the suave electro-pop strums of "See Me," where he shares the beautiful, glowing feeling of finding happiness in someone else's love and presence, Lost & Found shimmers with tension and pull, and surprisingly rolls with effortless transition from one sound to another. Other standouts include the sensual and moody “Lights Out,” which features Mo of P-Pop group Alamat, the ceiling-punching anthem “No Control,” and the acoustic ditty “Honest.”

Check out the Lost & Found track list below:

1. 1999
2. See Me
3. Silent Cries
4. Honest
5. No Control (ft. (e)motion engine)
6. Lights Out (ft. Alamat Mo)
7. Sumaya
8. Silent Cries (Instrumental)
9. No Control (Instrumental)

James Reid reconnects with his mellow pop roots on new single “Sandal”

Saturday, August 31

James Reid Sandal

The stripped-down OPM track marks the new direction of his upcoming EP, to be released soon

Following the resurgence in popularity of his OPM smash “Randomantic,” James Reid returns to his mellow, pop-leaning roots with the release of “Sandal,” his new single under Sony Music Entertainment and Careless.

Stripped down the core with acoustic elements and smooth vocals, “Sandal” recreates the magical pull of his earlier records with a balance of accessibility and finesse.

As expected, Reid demonstrates his keenness to turn a simple gesture of romantic affirmation into a sterling piece of work. On “Sandal,” he is back with another serenade that has so much potential on both the commercial and artistic front.

“I just wanted to reconnect with my roots in music, blending my past music with my new sound and writing style,” the award-winning singer-songwriter and label mogul admits. “It’s also been a long-time request from my fans. Most of the songs in my new EP are written in Filipino.”

The recording superstar wrote the track together with Luke April of the Davao-based hip-hop and R&B group, Playertwo. Both Reid and April wanted to create a material that aims to easily comfort someone going through a tough time. As the former pointed out in his press statement, “The idea is that love is strength and vulnerability, and that I will be your sanctuary.”

James Reid adds, “This song means a lot to me personally. I wrote it for my girlfriend when she was having a terrible day. I wanted her to know that no matter what you’re going through, you can always lean on me.”

“Sandal” is also produced by Tim Marquez, who has helmed tracks for eclectic Filipino acts such as Ena Mori and Zild, and previously worked with James Reid on the piano ballad “Hurt Me Too.” Building on the initial ideas brought by Luke April, Tim approached Reid's new direction with a slow dance feel.

James Reid’s “Sandal” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment and Careless.

Barbie Almalbis explains overcoming internal struggles on new single “homeostasis”

Friday, August 23

Barbie Almalbis Homeostasis

The song serves as the second single off her upcoming fifth album, to be released at the end of the year

Following the critically acclaimed comeback single “Desperate Hours” last month, Barbie Almalbis makes her early-awaited return to deliver another eclectic follow-up to mark the continuation of a new music era.

The award-winning singer-songwriter has released her second single, “homeostasis,” which was derived from a biological term that illustrates our body’s regulating process as a way to adjust to changing external conditions.

“I’m no scientist, so I’m using this concept very loosely and explaining it in the simple way I understand it,” explains theDahilan pop-rock visionary. “It’s the process by which our body always returns to equilibrium, a balanced state, like how we involuntarily sweat when we’re too hot and shiver when we’re too cold. It’s the same with emotions: our body doesn’t want us to stay too ecstatic or too sad; it tries to bring us back to a steady state.”

Almalbis was undergoing a very challenging phase in her life, and felt the need to channel her frustrations into art. She couldn’t do anything to change the situation, so she thought of making a song that perfectly describes what she was experiencing at that moment.

The influential music figure reveals, “Homeostasis was giving me hope, that everyday my body is going to adapt, I’d feel less and less terrible in time, because it has that built-in function.”

Her constant collaborator Nick Lazaro of Eclectic Kiss arranged and produced the song, with Almalbis penning the material on guitarlele and brother/bandmate Karel Honasan writing the instrumental parts. The result is another riveting, non-conventional track that combines Almalbis’ confessional and poetic lyrics with edgy, art-rock production and minimal synths: think of St. Vincent or PJ Harvey, but with a more saccharine take in terms of vocal delivery.

“I love how Lazaro put all the dance and synth pop elements on it, as well as the more aggressive guitar riffs,” says Almalbis. “I’ve been interested in that dance pop/rock genre for a while. I had some songs like Run For Cover and Wicked Heart, but I love how Nick was able to do it this way, where the rock and edgy sound is more present; it kind of sounds closer to how we play these songs live too.”

Barbie Almalbis’ “homeostasis” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide.

The show's format features Japanese and international music guests performing a song in one take, filmed with shots of the artists and a microphone against a minimalist and usually white backdrop.

To date, THE FIRST TAKE renditions of “GENTO” and “MAPA” have amassed more than 4.5 million views on YouTube, becoming one of the most viewed performances from an Asian pop group/band.

“We’re eternally grateful to THE FIRST TAKE for giving us an opportunity to showcase our work on a platform known not just for its massive global following but for elevating the audio-visual experience of music fans with much-needed authenticity and rawness,” SB19 shares in a collective statement. “The performances really challenged us to work within our limitations and deliver with the best of our abilities. We’ve always considered performing as a sanctimonious process that deserves utmost preparation, love, and respect. Constantly reminded by THE FIRST TAKE that we can only perform the songs once, we had to reconnect with our roots and embrace the beauty of spontaneity.”

SB19 is the first Southeast Asian group and the first Filipino artist to be invited on the globally renowned platform, which also served as host to several acclaimed performances by other artists such as aespa, ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION, Hitsujibungaku, MANESKIN, ITZY, (G)-I-DLE, imase, Maluma, and more.

For THE FIRST TAKE version of “GENTO,” SB19 delivered a genuinely compelling performance that highlights the five-piece act’s incredible talent and range in harmonizing, singing, and rapping.

The chart-topping hitmakers also took musicality on a different level with their rousing version of “MAPA,” which SB19 redressed with a soaring arrangement and an inspiring gospel-infused delivery.

Both versions are now available for streaming and are bundled with its original versions:

SB19 and Gloc-9 join forces on uplifting new single “KALAKAL”

Thursday, August 15

The collaborative track pushes their artistry in a bold direction

OPM is abuzz with excitement as P-Pop kings SB19 and legendary rapper Gloc-9 drop their joint single “KALAKAL” today on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.

The monumental collaboration finds both music titans taking their creative direction to previously uncharted places and harnessing their gifts with a balance of star power and dynamism.

According to SB19, they reached out to Gloc-9 first for a potential partnership after performing together on the well-received PAGTATAG! Finale concert, which was held at the Araneta Coliseum a few months ago.

“What sets this collaboration apart from anything that we’ve done before is that we took it upon ourselves to be as involved as possible from the beginning of the creative process,” the GENTO hitmakers share in a press statement. “Aside from brainstorming from scratch, we were really hands-on in sharing our melodic and lyrical ideas. Sir Gloc-9 also approached the material with his own creative stamp and further solidified the storytelling aspects of our final output. The result is something that we’re excited to share with our music fans: a rousing chant that brings out the best of both worlds in uniquely inspiring ways.”

All members of SB19 and Gloc-9 contributed individual songwriting parts and verses on “KALAKAL,” while putting their collaborative hats together in coming up with the chorus and hooks. The five-piece pop act admits that the iconic hip-hop star’s presence motivated them to write from a place of vulnerability and truth, while taking into consideration the anthemic aspects of the production.

“We’ve always wanted to make a song that resonates with people of varying generations, a material that will encourage them to beat their chests out and sing along in their full emotional glory,” SB19 explains. “KALAKAL, with its impactful instrumentation and earworm appeal, was made in pursuit of authentic human connection.”

More than shining a light on unique Filipino consumerism, “KALAKAL” is a powerful track that showcases their journey of empowerment and longevity. It also chronicles their story of building their legacy as artists through years of hard work, perseverance, humility, and pure talent.

Gloc-9 adds, “This song is all about believing in your own craft. Despite being years ahead of them, I was actually inspired by SB19’s level of dedication and confidence. I also admire their willingness to learn and explore ideas that may not necessarily reflect the way they work. I would love to collaborate with them again, if given a chance.”

Stream SB19 and Gloc-9’s new single “KALAKAL” via Sony Music Entertainment.

As part of their ongoing campaign to promote “KALAKAL” on a grassroots level, SB19 partnered with select local businesses to engage its followers in exploring the deeper meaning behind the song through the member’s individual preferences. PhilPop Himig Handog releases 12-song compilation on streaming platforms worldwide

Tuesday, July 23

PhilPop Himig Handog

Maki, Moira, Johnoy Danao, Ice, VXON, Ferdinand Aragon, and more, join this year’s esteemed roster of interpreters

PhilPop Himig Handog Songwriting Competition has released a compilation featuring the top 12 songs that made it to the final round.

The diverse selection of fully produced tunes was handpicked by the two music institutions (PhilPop and Himig Handog), who have made history by teaming up to find the next wave of global superstars and industry titans.

According to Jonathan Manalo, the creative director of ABS-CBN Music, the final roster of tracks was determined through a rigorous adjudication process. The selection of songs involved direct consultation with the songwriters to determine the creative direction of their respective material and identify collaborators who aligned with their overall vision for the competition.

Jonathan Manalo

Manalo explains, “We then shortlisted possible interpreters for each track, and a lot of things had to be considered or fall into place. The next steps include choosing an artist that fits the genre and production schedule. We couldn’t simply pick someone based on name value. They had to make sense in terms of style, the songwriter’s vision, and overall commitment to the song, among others.”

Ice Seguerra

Some of the artists who interpreted the songs include chart-topping R&B sensation Maki, award-winning singer-songwriters Moira and Johnoy Danao, folk-pop icon Ice Seguerra, recording pop artist Jolianne, Cebuano pride Ferdinand Aragon, P-Pop boyband VXON, and newcomers: KHIMO; Lyka Estrella, Annrain, and Geca Morales; Kurt Fick; Noah Alejandre; Shantel Cyline and Extrapolation; and FANA and Tiara Shaye.

Dinah Remolacio, PhilPop Executive Producer, also emphasized the importance of finding the right team of producers when developing the final version of the songs.

“Respect for language was also taken into consideration as we wanted artists who naturally spoke the languages that are not necessarily Tagalog and not someone who would pretend to sing in a language that he or she wasn’t familiar with. Overall, the production was a process that required a lot of components to fall into place, as well as a lot of patience and dedication. But we’re excited for people to finally hear these songs.”

The shortlisted entries explore the different facets of OPM in a modern, globalized setting while retaining its unique storytelling style and individuality. Based on the final output alone, the pioneering batch of PhilPop Himig Handog Songwriting Competition stays true to its unwavering commitment to promoting OPM on a scale that’s never been done before: break new territories and captivate the international audience with music that is distinctly global yet very Pinoy.

As Manalo puts it, “The Top 12 have been very proactive and collaborative in their tracks. They really care about the final output of their songs, and there’s a drive to achieve their vision for their respective tracks. There was definitely a conscious effort, not just to make these songs globally competitive but also to make them a beautiful reflection of this generation’s stories and context. I think what we’ll hear for this batch is a representation of the current landscape of OPM that’s very diverse, young, and vibrant.”

Remolacio adds, “I think you can expect a fresh batch of pop songs that have the ability to break borders globally and represent the diverse but interconnected culture of our country. We hope that through these tracks, our local fandoms will be proud of our music, and we hope that these songs will strengthen the local music scene and the music breaking borders movement.”

SB19 The First Take MAPA

SB19, who recently made headlines by surpassing 100 million views on their official lyric video for “MAPA,” is back to “THE FIRST TAKE” with a new performance of another hit song.

Following their viral hit "GENTO," which they performed during their debut on YouTube channel “THE FIRST TAKE” on July 1st, their second performance video for "MAPA" premiered on July 15th (Monday) at 9:00 pm, Manila time.

For their second performance on THE FIRST TAKE, SB19 will showcase the emotional song "MAPA," a stark contrast to the explosive "GENTO." In this performance, attention should not only be given to their performance but also to the heart-warming lyrics dedicated to their parents and parent figures.

“We’re excited to share a different version of MAPA to the local and international audience through THE FIRST TAKE,” shares SB19 in a press statement. “We’re honored to showcase Filipino music on a music platform with a reputable track record of elevating the global presence of the artists performing. Mad props to THE FIRST TAKE for giving us a chance to impart a piece of our cultural and music sensibilities in ways that could be challenging but exciting.”

“THE FIRST TAKE” is a Japanese YouTube channel that invites top singers and artists from all over the world to perform a song recorded in one take. Videos on “The First Take” are filmed in a studio, with shots of the performing artist and a microphone, set to a background that is usually white.

SB19 on the other hand, is the first Southeast Asian group and the first Filipino to be invited in the influential music media outlet. They recently trended on X after the announcement of their return to “THE FIRST TAKE.”

SB19, who held their first concert in Japan at Tokorozawa Sakura Town on April 29th (Monday) and achieved great success, continues to grow their fandom both domestically and internationally. Following their debut performance of "GENTO" on "THE FIRST TAKE" as the first Filipino artists to be featured, the video has surpassed 2 million views. In response, the members released a thank-you video to their global fans, saying, "We were able to come this far thanks to the support of all the A'TIN." This generated even more attention ahead of their return.
