Curated booths in the event offered sisters instant self-care experiences the whole day, and they only needed to trade in Physiogel or other skincare brands' empties to join! This gave them VIP access to the Strength Booth, where participants styled their work OOTDs, Softness Booth which featured a journaling session, Moisture Booth for the make-up lovers, and lastly, the Cleanse Booth where a meditation session took place. 

The highlight of this sisterly bonding? Truly inspiring chikahan sessions with our guest sisters! Beauty influencer Toni Sia graced the first leg in Southwoods Mall while actress Bianca Umali joined us in UP Town Center, sharing their unfiltered stories and empowering words with host Bianca Valerio. These sisters are life pegs personified, for they exude such strength in softness! 

Despite always looking so put together they admitted that their journey to self-love wasn't a smooth one. Bianca only realized this when she took a short break from her work. "I'm not really malaaga sa sarili dati. But because of the pandemic, I learned how to make myself feel that I am at peace and that I am okay. So that pushed me to take care of myself". Toni candidly narrated that she started from the inside by learning how to say no. "With things that don't resonate with me, I just say no. When I feel like my intuition says that something is not meant for me, then I say no and stay firm in what I believe in.", Toni shared. 

These ladies made it a point to prioritize themselves because self-care is non-negotiable! When it comes to their skin, at the top of their reco list is, of course, Physiogel. I am such a late bloomer when it comes to anything Korean. For the longest time, it's only Lee Min Ho that I am familiar with and it's because my sister is a big fan. I only started watching K-drama a few months ago. Managed to watch  two series: Prison Playbook and Something in the Rain. When it comes to skin care, I'm the most lazy. I can't religiously keep a regimen. 

I'm guilty of neglecting my skin. I can't even remember when was the last time I had a facial. I only panicked when I noticed the dullness of my skin. The blackheads and the annoying large pores also concerned me. I'm 42. Though many people say I look younger than my age, I could not say the same when it comes to my skin.

I've been hearing about the Korean skin care routine and it's overwhelming. The 10 steps seem too much for me. But if it will help erase my blemishes and improve my complexion, I'm willing to give it a try. 

A few days ago, I visited Skinfinity Skin and Body Spa in BGC. The clinic was founded by Filipino-Korean beauty and skin specialists. The machines and the products they use are from Korea. I tried the 24K Gold Facial and experience the Korean skincare routine.

Step 1: Cleansing Cream

The cleansing cream removes the make up and dirt from the skin

Step 2: Cleansing Milk

Double cleansing is done to remove the oil residue and the remaining skin impurities 

Step 3: Scrubbing

Scrubbing removes the dead skin cells that makes the skin dull and flaky. Exfoliating also prevents the pores from getting block by dirt and oil. 

Step 4: Steam

Steaming the face opens the pores. It helps soften the dead skin cells and release dirt that causes blackheads and acne.

Step 5: Pricking and Extraction

Stubborn blackheads on my nose has always been a problem. I normally enjoy the extraction of blackheads since it's almost painless. I don't have any pimple during my facial so I was spared from the pain of pricking.

Step 6: Toner

A toner was applied on my face to bring back the skin's pH balance. My skin started to redden as soon as the toner was applied. It's not a concern though because it always happen and will be okay after an hour.

Step 7: Diamond Peel

Diamond peel minimizes the appearance of acne scars. It also aids in the stimulation of collagen production thus removes fine lines and wrinkles.

Step 8: High Frequency 

High frequency facial addresses my problem with enlarged pores. It also reduces the appearance of fine lines and prevents acne breakouts. 

Step 9: Gold Mask

The use of the 24K Gold mask dates back to the time of Cleopatra. This is an anti-aging treatment and helps improve sun damaged skin. The mask will give you an instant glow and gives the skin a firm appearance.

Step 10: Moisturizer and Sunblock Gel

The last step is the application of moisturizer and sunblock gel. Lately, this step is something I exert an effort to do every morning before I go out.  

My skin never felt so soft and clean. I've got a darker skin tone as of the moment (and will even darken when I visit La Union again in November).  The enlarged pores are still too visible and the appearance of my acne scars still bother me. Our bodies are affected in many different ways by genetics. Genes are made up of DNA and determine the characteristics of everything from hair and eye color, to the way we process and store nutrients, to our type of skin and how it reacts to the sun. Our bodies hold between 20,000 and 25,000 different genes, some of which will affect us negatively.

We all inherit two copies of each gene, one from each parent. Most genes are the same for everyone, but a small number (less than 1 percent) are slightly different between people and these small differences contribute to each person’s unique physical characteristics.

Because you receive your DNA through your family line, if your parents and their parents had skin problems such as freckles, acne or rosacea, you may have a greater chance of also experiencing those issues. However, the outcome can be regulated by proper skincare and many of these skin irregularities caused by your DNA can be lessened or eliminated.

Freckles

Freckles show on the skin as small flat spots appearing slightly darker than the surrounding area. These darker areas are caused by the absorption of the sun’s UV (ultra-violet) rays which, through genetics, triggers an excess production of melanin, the pigment that regulates skin color. Freckles are harmless but are sometimes confused with more serious skin problems. Anyone who has one or more pigmented spots of which they are not certain should consult a doctor or dermatologist.

Freckles are rarely treated but several safe methods are available to help lighten or reduce their appearance. Not everyone's skin will improve with treatment, and freckles often recur with additional UV exposure. Bleaching or fading creams containing hydroquinone and kojic acid, combined with a retinoid over a period of months may lighten the appearance of freckles. Cryosurgery, laser treatments or chemical peels are quicker but more expensive options.

Freckle prevention is more effective than freckle removal: use sunscreens with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 50, wear a wide-brimmed hat and sun-protective clothing (shirts with long sleeves), and avoid exposure during the peak sun hours of 10 a.m. to 4 pm by seeking shade or staying indoors.

Acne

The formation of acne is set in motion when the lining of a pore in the skin begins to produce skin cells at a rate higher than normal. Dead skin cells then accumulate in the pore faster than the sebum (oil secreted by the sebaceous gland at the base of a pore) can push them to the surface. Then, the oily sebum gets trapped under dead skin, along with acne bacteria. The immune system manufactures an inflammation to kill the bacteria, but the bacteria release chemicals that resist.

There are two factors that initiate the production of acne: intrinsic and extrinsic.

Intrinsic factors are genetics and hormones and we have no control over either one. Genetics play a significant role in acne formation as they can be responsible for the creation of defective oil glands and pore linings or the production of abnormal sebum. Hormones vary throughout life according to age and the differences in male and female development.

Extrinsic factors are a large and diverse category over which we have much more control. This category can include medications, external stress, and the type of skincare products used.

Rosacea

Experts are not certain about what specifically causes rosacea, but they believe that it is due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors: family history, chronic sun exposure, and being fair-skinned and of eastern or northern European descent such as those from Ireland, Scotland or England.

Rosacea typically involves the central portion of the face, mainly the forehead, cheeks, the lower half of the nose, and the chin. Currently, it is believed that rosacea patients have a genetic inability to dampen facial inflammation caused by factors such as sunburn, flushing, and certain medications.
