Red Bull BC One Regional Cypher Philippines

In a spectacular showcase of talent and skill, B-Boy Engski and B-Girl Yani emerged victorious at the inaugural Red Bull BC One Regional Cypher Philippines, held on March 7, 2024, at Apotheka, Manila. Facing fierce competition from over 80 breakers, these two dancers not only captivated the audience and judges but secured their place as the champions, paving the way for their journey onto the global stage.

As winners of the Red Bull BC One Regional Cypher Philippines, B-Boy Engski and B-Girl Yani, along with second-place finishers B-Boy Killafour and B-Girl Liz, are set to represent the Philippines in Indonesia at the upcoming Red Bull BC One Southeast Asia Regional Final on March 22nd. The stakes are high, as the regional champion in Indonesia will earn a coveted wild card slot at the Last Chance Cypher for the Red Bull BC One World Final in Brazil later this year.

Expressing gratitude, B-Boy Engski from Quezon City shared his appreciation for the event, stating, “I’m grateful that a big event like this was held here in the Philippines, as the B-boy and B-girl communities are hungry for it. We hope that they will continue to visit and host large events like this to provide possibilities for us coming from the Philippines.”

Meanwhile, B-Girl Yani expressed her excitement about the inclusion of B-Girls in the Red Bull BC One Regional Cypher, seeing it as a significant step forward for the breaking community. She stated, “I'm happy because this is the first time Red Bull BC One is in the Philippines and will feature a 1-v-1 category. Now that they've opened it for B-girls, I'm overjoyed and overwhelmed because it's not just for me, but for the entire breaking community.”

Leading up to the Red Bull BC One Regional Cypher, the Red Bull BC One All Stars, including renowned Filipino breakers B-Boy Ronnie and B-Girl Logistx, engaged with the local dance community through a series of workshops. This initiative aimed to foster connections and inspire the next generation of dancers, addressing the need for more opportunities and support within the breaking community.

B-Boy Ronnie stressed, “They need more events like this, more support. And also, we did a session with them, and they just need more opportunities to battle, travel, and to build with one another.” B-Girl Logistx emphasized the importance of visibility and support, stating, “A lot of the [Filipino] breakers are so dope, but what holds them back in terms of opportunities is just the visibility.”

With breaking included in the Paris Summer Olympics for the first time, the Red Bull BC One All Stars embraced the opportunity to engage with the vibrant local dance community. This initiative highlighted Red Bull's dedication to promoting dance, arts, and culture in the Philippines, amplifying the significance of breaking on a global stage.

The Red Bull BC One Regional Cypher Philippines marks a pivotal moment for the country's breaking scene, showcasing the talent and passion within its borders. As B-Boy Engski, B-Boy Killafour, B-Girl Yani, and B-Girl Liz prepare to represent the Philippines on the regional stage, they carry with them the hopes and dreams of a nation, poised to leave an indelible mark on the global breaking community.

Coca-Cola PH strengthens recycling presence in Bacolod, 500 stores to join Tindahan Extra Mile

Tindahan Extra Mile

Coca-Cola Philippines, in partnership with Basic Environmental Systems and Technologies, Inc. (BEST) and the Philippine Association of Stores and Carinderia Owners (PASCO), has launched the Tindahan Extra Mile (TEM): Balik PET Bottle Program in Bacolod City.

By engaging 500 sari-sari stores and carinderias as new collection partners, consumers in Bacolod City can take more action around recycling and help advance a circular economy for plastic packaging.

Bacolod City Mayor Albee Benitez welcomed the initiative and emphasized the importance of partnering with industries, companies, social enterprises, and non-government institutions to deliver impactful and sustainable opportunities that can help uplift lives.

"The Tindahan Extra Mile Program is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. By mobilizing our local entrepreneurs and fostering community engagement, we are taking significant strides towards a greener and more sustainable Bacolod,” he said.

"As we launch the Tindahan Extra Mile Program, we are not merely initiating a program; we are igniting a movement," Mayor Albee emphasized. "Together with BENRO, BEST, Coca-Cola Philippines, and our dedicated micro-retailers, we have the power to effect real change and preserve our environment for future generations,” he added.

How does TEM benefit micro-retailers?

Through Tindahan Extra Mile, participating micro-retailers will receive financial incentives by collecting PET plastic bottles. The program encourages the community to partake in a shared responsibility towards a cleaner Bacolod by providing convenient collection points in front of sari-sari stores and carinderias. Residents can easily drop off their empty bottles for recycling. Store owners will accrue environmental points proportional to the bottles they collect, redeemable for cash or products through the bXTRA app.

"Investing in the Tindahan Extra Mile program aligns perfectly with Coca-Cola Philippines' goal to collect and recycle the equivalent of every bottle we sell in the country. By empowering women micro-retailers, who make up a significant portion of sari-sari stores and carinderia owners in the Philippines, TEM creates a convenient and accessible network for consumers to recycle,” said Pablo Medina, Senior Director for Franchise Operations at Coca-Cola Philippines. “This program not only helps foster environmental responsibility but also provides opportunities for financial independence and growth for these female entrepreneurs, driving positive change within their communities.”

How can a micro-retailer become a TEM member?

Any sari-sari store and carinderia owner can become a member of the Tindahan Extra Mile in three easy steps.

Step 1: On the Tindahan Extra Mile Facebook page, sign up on the bXTRA website using your email address.

Step 2: Collect empty PET plastic bottles and bring them to the nearest TEM Trash to Cashback Collection Hub.

Step 3: Exchange your PET bottles for a TEM kit and card to start earning environmental points.

Watch here to learn more about Tindahan Extra Mile.

BEST Senior Vice President Jan Vincent Mercado urges micro-retailers to join TEM as members. "In partnership with Coca-Cola Philippines, our aim is to empower micro- entrepreneurs to become environmental stewards,” he said. “We acknowledge their significance and influence within communities, emphasizing their potential to encourage community members to segregate plastic waste and participate in recycling endeavors,” Mercado said.

Empowering micro-retailers for a World Without Waste

To enable more micro-retailers and inspire collective action towards plastic bottle recycling, Coca-Cola Philippines will bring the Tindahan Extra Mile Program to other areas such as Cebu and Cagayan de Oro in 2024.

Last year, Coca-Cola Philippines launched its consumer engagement program, “May Ikabobote Pa”, to educate, inspire, and engage more consumers to return their empty bottles and cans for recycling.

To advance the circularity of plastic packaging, the company also introduced new bottles made from 100% recycled PET plastic. This packaging innovation is now available in Coca-Cola Original 190ml, Wilkins Pure 500ml, and Sprite 500ml. These bottles can be recycled many times, significantly reducing the volume of virgin plastic created and used.

Consumers can locate the nearest collection points and discover more about Coca-Cola Philippines’ recycling initiatives through the Coca-Cola Sustainability Hub.

IWD 2024: Empowering Women Leadership in Conservation

Monday, March 04, 2024

Rita Wati and her fellow women pioneers in the Maju Bersama movement during their activity in Kerinci Seblat National Park.

Women are crucial to the Philippines’ agriculture, fisheries, and forestry (AFF) sectors. The United Nations highlights that women have the highly specialized knowledge of forests from species diversity, management of resources, to conservation and restoration practices that are vital to sustainable development and food security. The Philippines demonstrates its appreciation for women in these sectors with the Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment Plan (GEWE Plan) 2019-2025 to expand economic opportunities for them.

But gender disparities persist. The Philippine Commission on Women reports that women in the AFF sectors face marginalization in employment, pay, and resource access, constituting only about 25% of workers and often receiving lower wages. Women's significant contributions to AFF are also generally overlooked as their work is typically considered household tasks.

This International Women’s Day (IWD) 2024, Indonesia-based environmental organization that focuses on awareness raising and policy advocacy, The Institute for Studies, Advocacy, and Education (LivE) shares insights on how local organizations can overcome the gender disparities by empowering women to take the helm in sustainability and conservation.

Driving Change with Indonesia's Pioneering Women-Led Conservation Movement

Finding the balance between environmental protection and economic empowerment often met with a dead end, or in most cases, a sacrifice from the one on the other side. This is often made worse by policies that did not consider grassroots aspirations, such as what happens in Indonesia’s Kerinci Seblat National Park, in the western part of Sumatra island.

Public apathy toward conservation of the park led to the depletion of 130,322 hectares in 2014. This impacted the decrease of biodiversity, the water sources, the support systems for many agricultural fields that the surrounding communities depend on. As a result, there was a disproportionate impact on farmers, especially women farmers as they faced not only water scarcity, soil fertility, and crop yields but also the cascading effect on it.

Recognizing the importance of forest conservation and the untapped potential of women in nearby communities, LivE initiated training sessions addressing women's rights in forest management. These sessions tackled challenges encompassing health, domestic responsibilities, production roles, and social engagement, linking them to environmental strains. This is where Rita Wati, a 52-year-old native of Kerinci Seblat National Park and now chairperson of "Women's Group for Environmental Care Maju Bersama," emerged as a driving force behind the park's conservation efforts.

In the early days of her advocacy, Wati faced skepticism for being a woman in role that is often assumed by men and challenges in evolving conservation regulations. She persevered in initiating discussions with the national park authorities which enabled her organisation to submit a proposal that allowed them to be involved in managing, conserving and benefiting from the national park—leading Wati to ink a historic conservation partnership agreement with the national park, marking Maju Bersama group as the pioneering women's group managing a forest area in Indonesia.

"It's truly a joy. Inspired by our progress, now, women in many villages are no longer silent. They are ready to move together to fight for women's rights to the environment and forests," said Rita.

Advocating nature protection and women empowerment

The success story of Maju Bersama group, now comprising 25 members, in securing their rights to participate in forest conservation has sparked a wave of positive outcomes. Beyond empowering their own businesses, they've honed their capacities, influenced policies, and actively engaged in pivotal decision-making processes.

Rita's impactful journey includes participating in national events like The Asia Foundation's 'The Role of Women in Social Forestry for Food Resilience' in 2019 and contributing to the establishment of the Indonesia Social Forestry Manager Association. Recognized by local authorities, Rita leads the park in gender-equitable conservation, aligning with UNESCO's World Heritage Site standards. Her unwavering determination and successful collaboration between the Maju Bersama group and Kerinci Seblat National Park inspire women to advocate for environmental rights, bannering women empowerment in environmental preservation.

‘Golda’: The Untold Story of Israel's Iron Lady, Exclusively on Lionsgate Play

Golda

Discover the intense drama behind the 1973 Arab–Israeli War when ‘Golda’ premieres on Lionsgate Play on PLDT Home on March 8.

The story of Israel’s first and only female prime minister has been the subject of much debate and fascination, which is why Golda is likely to be one of the most talked-about titles on Lionsgate Play. Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guy Nattiv, the film is set against the backdrop of the Yom Kippur War — also known as the 1973 Arab-Israeli War. Golda chronicles the high-stakes, real-life political decisions that Prime Minister Golda Meir (played masterfully by Helen Mirren) had to make during this tumultuous time. Facing insurmountable challenges, Meir's leadership and decision-making faced intense scrutiny as she handled the threat looming over Israel — the narrative journeys with her through daunting political decisions that changed the course of history.

Talking about Helen Mirren's performance as Golda Meir, director Guy Nattiv says, "For me, as an Israeli, and as Jewish, it doesn't matter if you're not Jewish, you're one of the best actresses of our time and you are Golda to me. When I saw her on the first day on set with all the prosthetics I was blown away. My jaw dropped and I was like, this IS Golda. She really depicted every nuance and every move. I am very grateful for working with a legend."

On Meir's controversial legacy, Nattiv adds, "She will always be connected to the failure of Yum Kippur war. Golda was the wrong person, in the wrong place, in the wrong time. She didn't want to be a prime minister, but she had to take the job because no one else wanted it at that time. They pushed her to be a prime minister and then she was thrown into this mayhem and trying to deal with the mess. Israelis are so conflicted about her character. Now, if you look outside of Israel, and Jews outside of Israel, they see more of the romantic story of Golda who came from Milwaukee to Israel when she was a young woman, full of Zionism and a hope to help the country. She was the Iron Lady of Israel and, like Margaret Thatcher, there are some people who love her and some people who hate her."

Witness the powerful, gripping, and often heartbreaking story of one of history’s most controversial figures when Goldapremieres exclusively on Lionsgate Play on PLDT Home this March 8th.
