Holiday Escapes: How Filipinos Travel, Shop, and Pay During the Season

Survey by Visa shows Filipinos' shift toward contactless payments, experience-driven travel; Singapore and Japan preferred holiday destinations

It’s the holiday season—at least for Filipinos—and with it comes a surge in holiday shopping, travel, get-togethers, and festive activities. With the season being a peak time for getaways, Filipinos prioritize experience-driven travel, with Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan being top destinations. Visa’s latest Green Shoots Radar survey[1] reveals a significant shift in how Filipinos plan and pay for their travels, showing a growing preference for contactless payments alongside the continued use of cash.

Travelling for new experiences, shopping

For Filipino travelers, the holiday season is an opportunity to explore new experiences and create lasting memories as travel peaks in December, with 32% of surveyed respondents planning domestic trips and 23% choosing international destinations.

The survey found that most Filipinos travel to relax (80%) and seek new experiences (43%). While sightseeing remains the top activity (82%), experiencing local cuisine and dining (67%) and shopping (67%) are also key priorities. This shows that Filipinos are looking for destinations that offer a blend of leisure, entertainment, and adventure.

Singapore, a long-time favorite, emerged as the top destination for Filipino travelers over the past 12 months, with 38% of respondents visiting the city-state. Singapore continues to draw Filipino tourists with its vibrant blend of urban attractions and rich cultural experiences. Its close proximity to the Philippines, ease of access, and wide range of activities makes it an ideal choice, especially during the holiday season.

Hong Kong remains a favorite at 31%, particularly for travelers who enjoy combining shopping with festive celebrations. Its expansive retail scene and diverse culinary offerings make it appealing to Filipino families seeking both luxury and bargain shopping experiences.

Japan, known for its picturesque landscapes, festive markets and shopping districts alongside its deep cultural heritage, is another popular destination, with 30% of Filipinos visiting to experience the Land of the Rising Sun.

As Filipinos head overseas, many are also drawn to the Philippines as a tourist destination. Inbound travel to the Philippines is also on the rise, with the country welcoming 3.66 million international visitors from January to August 2024—a 10.14% increase from the same period last year, according to the Department of Tourism.[2] Additionally, data from the World Travel and Tourism Council’s 2024 Economic Impact Research (EIR) forecasts that international and domestic tourism spending will reach P715.6 billion and P3.7 trillion, respectively, surpassing 2019 figures by 5.7% and 1.8%.[3]

Jeff Navarro, Country Manager for Visa Philippines, said: “At Visa, we are committed to ensuring a seamless, secure, and convenient experience for Filipino travelers heading abroad and for inbound visitors to the Philippines. We recognize that tourism plays a vital role in the economy, contributing to job creation and overall growth. We’re working to support the Filipino government's efforts to enhance tourism by improving digital payment methods and providing tourists with an enjoyable experience, which will help to further drive economic development and strengthen the tourism industry.”

Visa helps drive the growth of tourism in the Philippines by leveraging its global network and collaborating with local markets to promote the acceptance of Visa cards, creating a more enjoyable payments experience for tourists. In the Philippines, Visa supports small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) by providing tools and knowledge for cashless transactions such as the SME Online Toolkit. Post-COVID, Visa launched the POSM Visibility Initiative to enhance marketing materials in tourist hotspots. Additionally, Visa partnered with the Pacific Asia Travel Association to conduct finance and digital skills workshops for tourism SMEs and Department of Tourism officials, benefiting 120 participants across Southeast Asia including Laguna in the Philippines.

Shift in Payment Preferences: Contactless and Cash

A key trend emerging in Filipino travel habits is the shift toward contactless payments. In a survey commissioned by Visa done by YouGov[4] in Aug 2024 reveals that 66% of Filipino travelers now prefer using contactless methods like mobile wallets and tap-to-pay cards, while 67% said they will likely get cards with contactless features.

"As cross-border travel continues to grow, Visa sees a tremendous opportunity to remain a key part of the traveler’s journey. The convenience and security of digital payment options give travelers greater confidence when making transactions abroad—whether they are booking accommodation, dining, or shopping. Our goal is to continue supporting travelers at every stage, from planning and booking to the entirety of their trip, by encouraging the use of Visa for a seamless, secure, and hassle-free payment experience," Navarro added.

Despite the rise in contactless payments, 71% of holiday travelers still carry cash as a backup, particularly in areas where digital payment infrastructure may not be as widely available. The continued use of cash illustrates that there is some way to go towards full contactless payments, especially for holiday destinations that have not fully shifted to cashless payments.

As the holiday season approaches, the preference for more experience-driven travel, combined with evolving payment methods, reflects the changing dynamics of how Filipinos shop, pay, and explore the world. Whether through cash or contactless payments, the essence of Filipino travel remains centered around creating memories and sharing moments with loved ones—values that are as enduring as the destinations themselves.

Building empires from home: Celebrating sustainable businesses by mompreneurs

Tuesday, October 15, 2024

Gawad Madiskarte 2024

PLDT Home honors mompreneurs through Gawad Madiskarte 2024, awarding the most innovative and sustainable businesses founded and led by mothers.

Filipino mothers are the role models the world needs. Not only are they caring, nurturing and resilient, they also bring communities together and embody the country’s spirit of innovation. When something is lacking, they find ways to make it whole; when they are constrained by their financial situation, they dig deep into their experiences to find solutions.

They do all this with a smile as they share advice and encourage each other. These are the moms of Madiskarte Moms PH (MMPH), an online community of mom entrepreneurs helping women start their path to financial freedom. Founded during the pandemic when thousands of women lost their jobs, moms added another role to their name: mompreneur.

PLDT Home recognized from the outset that this movement was the future of entrepreneurship in the Philippines. Building empires from home—starting with micro-, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs)—is the new way to financial independence as the platform lets mompreneurs showcase their ability to learn new skills and manage their roles as caregivers, teachers, and business owners.

Today, the community has 190,000 members, 450+ members turned brand affiliates, 150 recipients of business toolkits, over 24,900 trained mompreneurs, and 16 online masterclasses and webinars.

And so Gawad Madiskarte was born to celebrate the triumphs of Filipino mompreneurs, those who inspire not just their families but their communities through their creativity and hard work. The awards are supported by PLDT Home as part of its commitment to nation building and its purpose of inspiring innovation and meaningful connections.

Gawad Madiskarte 2024 is set for October 19 at Seda Hotel in BGC. It will award mompreneurs in three categories: Diskarteng Angat, Diskarteng Eco-Friendly and Diskarteng May-Puso in start-up and scale-up divisions. The panel of judges for this year's competition is a formidable lineup of industry leaders and experts, each bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table. Their diverse backgrounds and accomplishments make them a truly distinguished panel. This panel is composed of Butch Jimenez, Chief Operating Officer, PLDT Inc.; Jonjon San Agustin, Executive Vice President for Marketing, SM Supermalls; Tweetie de Leon, owner of TdLG Designs; Angela Chongco, owner of Mayumi Organics; Pia Hontiveros, broadcast journalist; and Annette Gozon-Valdes, President, GMA Films.

Gawad Madiskarte 2024 puts the spotlight on mompreneurs who champion sustainability as business owners, whether it’s by leaving the least carbon footprint in their manufacturing process and operations, supporting local communities, or creating products that are part of the circular economy.

Nominees and prizes

Six (6) mompreneurs can bring home the major prizes across three subcategories (Diskarteng Angat, Diskarteng Eco-Friendly, Diskarteng May-Puso) where each will receive ₱100,000. Two (2) winners across two subcategories (Diskarteng Digital, DiskartengHomebiz) will each receive ₱50,000, and all other finalists will each receive ₱25,000.

Also lending their support to the mompreneurs is delivery and logistics company Lalamove, which will provide ₱10,000 worth of Lalamove vouchers to the six (6) major winners; and ₱7,500 worth of Lalamove vouchers to two (2) special award winners. Mompreneurs can use these vouchers for their product deliveries and business operations that require courier services. To make their home life easier and more fun in the kitchen, home and kitchen appliances brand Tough Mama will give all winners a Detachable Electric Griller and Plate; and Tough Mama Hand Mixer to all 18 finalists.

On top of all these prizes is a beautiful trophy created by world-class sculptor Ram Mallari. Throughout his career, Mallari has brought sustainable art to a whole new level. His artworks are made from discarded metal and other materials, and given new life as he fashions them into provocative works of art.

This year’s nominees for Diskarteng Angat are (start-up) Olivia’s Partyland, Pixellab Self Portrait Studio, Le Vourge Scents; (scale-up) MomiBigbig's Kitchen, Ulap Bedsheet, Love My Pajamies, HTP Clothing. For Diskarteng Eco-Friendly, the nominees are (start-up) Bloomingdale Collections, Bayong Pampanga, Xavier &Xandrie; (scale-up) MP Nieva’s Flower Company, OPC, Isay Bags. For Diskarteng May Puso, the nominees are (start-up) Bounty Honey - Pure ,Raw,Wild from Mindanao, Isla PH Essentials, Bahay Ugnayan Educational Services; (scale-up) Jobiba Baby Diaper and Wipes, FH Moms.

Using “waste,” not adding to it

Sustainability may be fashion’s biggest trend judging from the recent Fashion Week series in New York, London, Milan and Paris. In London especially, eBay and Vinted put on runway shows of preloved clothing and accessories, showing once again that with fashion’s cyclical nature, nothing really goes out of style.

A number of this year’s nominees recognize that fashion can be sustainable by upcycling materials and making use of “waste” to create something new and beautiful. One nominee makes bayong bags embellished with PVC straps. Think Pretty Woman, but instead of going back to show them she had money, our heroine-slash-entrepreneur started experimenting on lowering the costs of PVC bags. And the rest is history.

Another nominee focuses on middle-class women who prefer reusable, earth-friendly items that would last them a long time. The company upcycles factory-reject materials into bags. It’s a family business that started from scraps of venetian blinds that their dad would bring home from the factory. What began as a home business in 2009 scaled up through bazaars and online shopping.

These women exemplify entrepreneurs that prioritize their social responsibility by adapting sustainable practices, local sourcing, and community engagement. Just what the world needs.

Be part of the future of entrepreneurship and this inspiring movement by joining the Facebook group.

Philips EasyKey 9300

The smart lock brings the future of security to Megaworld properties

Philips EasyKey, alongside leading real estate company Megaworld Corporation, is redefining smart security for Filipinos with the launch of Philips EasyKey 9300.

Digitalization has increasingly integrated itself into many facets of people’s lives—from devices to general electronics, and now homes. In the Philippines, around 12.2% of households indicated they have smart homes, a trend expected to increase to 22.8% by 2028.

Global trends show more people embracing the convenience of smart home technologies, automating lighting, climate control, and appliances. However, increased adoption brings security concerns, as more connected homes raise the risk of breaches, highlighting the need for better security measures.

This is why Philips EasyKey partnered with Megaworld and equipped their world-class properties with only the best-in-class smart locks we have on offer, the Philips EasyKey 9300. With its intuitive and intelligent interface, the partnership aims to provide Filipino families with a comfortable, convenient, and safe high-quality life.

The Philips EasyKey 9300 features a fingerprint sensor strategically located on the handle, ensuring your finger naturally falls on it when touched. Upon detecting a recognized fingerprint, the door unlocks instantly. This system is encased in tempered glass, as durable and strong as an artificial diamond.

It also includes an auto-lock system that securely locks the door once it closes. If the door remains unlocked, an internal timer will notify residents to close it. This ensures effective home security, allowing you to leave and return with peace of mind.

Additionally, it lets residents control their lock with the Philips EasyKey app, regardless of their location. The app can also remotely unlock the door and includes a built-in alarm system that triggers if the lock is tampered with.

Securing smart homes one smart lock at a time

Philips EasyKey believes in experiencing change at your fingertips, where products are able to visibly improve your quality of life. The Philips EasyKey 9300 exemplifies this by combining convenience with advanced security, ensuring your home is protected through state-of-the-art smart technology. Home Credit and Marian Rivera: A partnership built on longstanding trust

Marian Rivera

Marian Rivera gets real about her tiwala journey with Home Credit

Marian stands out as someone who has longevity and staying power in the Philippine entertainment industry. Known for her heartwarming presence on screen and in real life, the celebrated and award-winning actress dubbed as the new queen of all media, mom, and wife is someone who embodies credibility and reliability, understanding the importance of ‘tiwala’—whether it’s the trust she nurtures with her fans or the different brands she works with.

Marian carefully aligns herself with brands and causes that resonate with her values. For more than a year, she’s been the face of the country’s leading consumer finance company, Home Credit Philippines. The brand and Marian’s partnership was built on more than just promoting the brand—it equally underscores Filipinos' need for a trusted financial ally—a reliable partner to hold their hands as they move up in life.

“When I endorse a product, I always ask myself, what can I contribute to my fans and those who love me? For me, my fans are like family, and they always ask, oh, you’re endorsing Home Credit. Why did you choose to be part of that brand? What can it do for us? I want to be able to give a meaningful answer,” Marian shares.
She found that meaningful answer in Home Credit’s mission. The company’s commitment to providing accessible financial services, especially through 0% interest offers for essential needs like household appliances, gadgets, school supplies, and many more, resonated with Marian on a personal level.

A Mother’s Perspective

Marian’s connection with Home Credit is deeply rooted in her role as a mother.

“As a mom, I know how many expenses we have,” she says. “Nowadays, school isn't just about buying school supplies like paper and pens—our kids need gadgets like laptops and smartphones, which are expensive, but essential for modern education. Sometimes, schools even identify specifications!”

For Marian, Home Credit’s services offer peace of mind. “With Home Credit, I know I can provide these needs without worrying too much about the financial strain. It gives mothers like me peace of mind, knowing that we can give our children what they need for their education,” she added.

More Than Just a Brand Ambassador

Marian sees her role with Home Credit as more than just an endorsement.

“When I endorse something like Home Credit, I’m promoting a service that genuinely helps people, including those who trust me,” she says. “My fans are curious, and I want them to know that Home Credit offers a way to address their needs, whether it’s groceries pang araw-araw, school supplies para kina ate at kuya, or even something like rubber shoes para kay bunso.”

For Marian, this partnership is about advocating for financial empowerment, particularly for Filipino families. “I want people to know that my endorsements are not just for show, but a reflection of what I believe and trust in. By working with these brands, I can assure my fans and those who believe in me that they are the best products and services I can recommend,” she emphasizes.

Trust and responsibility

As a consumer herself, Marian knows the importance of making trustworthy choices. “We all need to be responsible, whether we’re buying milk for our kids or a new appliance for our home,” she explains.

“It’s not just about the price—it’s about checking what’s in it, its specs, its quality, and payment terms. Sometimes, something might seem reasonably priced but turns out to be not worth it. This is why I only trust brands that deliver what they promise, just like Home Credit.”

This trust is also central to her role as a brand ambassador.

“Trust is everything, especially when you’re asking people to believe in something you’re endorsing. If I don’t believe in it, I can’t ask others to trust it. I’m transparent, and use the products and services I endorse,” she says.
With Home Credit, Marian’s trust is unwavering. “I trust Home Credit one hundred percent because it has proven itself as a reliable financial ally of the Filipinos who has served close to 11 million customers in 11 years, across more than 15,000 partner stores in 75 provinces nationwide. That’s something hard to find these days.”

A Message of Empowerment

Beyond her role in the spotlight, Marian’s story with Home Credit is one of mutual trust and respect. It shows how a celebrity partnership can be grounded on shared values rather than purely commercial interests. For Marian, this partnership is more than just a job—it’s a way to inspire people to take control of their financial journeys and make informed choices that will benefit them and their families.

As the partnership between Marian Rivera and Home Credit continues to flourish, it’s clear that it is about creating trustful and meaningful connections and empowering them with financial opportunities that will allow them to live more rewarding lives.

“I’m proud to be part of something bigger,” Marian says. “It’s not just about endorsing a brand—it’s about empowering people to believe in themselves and the choices they make for their future.”

Marian Rivera’s partnership with Home Credit serves as a reminder that the best collaborations are those that come from the heart. This partnership is a powerful testament to the value of trust—not just between Marian and Home Credit but including every Filipino who is striving to build better, empowered lives.

Recently, Home Credit released a digital film that highlights Marian’s Tiwala journey with Home Credit and how the brand serves as a helping hand and a financial ally for every Filipino in achieving their life goals.
