A Love Song for the Philippines

Friday, April 04, 2025

Asia’s Phoenix, Morissette is the powerful voice behind the Department of Tourism’s (DOT) new Love the Philippines song, which showcases the many reasons to fall in love with the country.

More than a travel destination, the Philippines is home to many beautiful things worth discovering. Food, festivals, traditions, and the people all add to the connections that are developed and strengthened when travelers explore and experience what makes the Philippines beautiful and unique.

Having traveled around the globe for her career as a singer, Morissette is proud to have the opportunity to share with the world what makes the Philippines more than just a fun destination but a place anyone can easily feel at home and experience love through many forms. Born and raised in the vibrant city of Cebu, Morrissette carries the warmth and spirit of her hometown wherever she goes. "My family and I were based in Cebu City Proper. I love how it's a perfect mix of the province and city vibe." she shares, her eyes sparkling with affection for her hometown.

Where Her Love Began: A Cebuana at Heart

Born and raised in Cebu City, Morissette holds a deep affection for her hometown. “One of the things I've always loved about Cebu but only got to fully experience now as an adult, is that there are so many different things and activities to do there,” she shares. Having experienced her childhood in such a beautiful city, it’s no wonder that this experience has shaped her love for the Philippines.

A Love for Filipino Flavors

Morissette's love for the Philippines is deeply intertwined with her love for the local food. "One of my favorite Filipino dishes is anything barbecued," she shared, saying her favorite Cebu barbecue spot is Larsian, a big barbecue hub. She fondly recalls pairing every dish with puso rice, a staple in her hometown. Of course, no Filipino food experience is complete without something sweet, and for Morissette, nothing beats having a halo-halo, a popular local iced dessert. “Perfect [treat] to combat the Philippine heat, especially during the summertime.”

Onwards Across the Islands

The Love the Philippines music video beautifully captures the country’s abundance of places worth exploring, showcasing the treasure trove of experiences that travelers can expect, not just beaches, which the Philippines is well known for.

Together with her husband, Morissette enjoys exploring the Philippines’ 7641 islands, embarking on various trips, like hikes with their two beloved dogs. "We’ve been to Baguio and Tagaytay, and have also taken them on beach trips to Batangas and La Union." she said with a smile. “By car, we've been loving Tagaytay because of how close it is to Metro Manila and you get to enjoy a colder weather and all the woodsy feels. On a plane, we've been loving Bohol. We get to relax there, and I've also seen some of the best sunsets in the Panglao area,” she added.

She also finds herself frequently visiting Cebu and Quezon province the most, being her and her husband’s hometowns. “We get to see family when we visit and just [feel] right at home.” But it doesn’t stop there. Her travel bucket list is still brimming with destinations waiting to be explored, “I’d love to visit Bataan, Camiguin, and Palawan,” she excitedly shared. She’s also eager to go on a full tour of Intramuros, explore Palawan’s geological sites, and taste the famous mangoes of Guimaras.

A Song as Beautiful as the Philippines

As the voice behind the DOT’s Love the Philippines song is an honor that Morissette cherishes deeply. “I am thrilled to be the voice of the latest tourism campaign of the Philippines. I hope it reminds a lot of our kababayans of how there's also so much to love, explore, and experience [in] our country, and that we've always been rich in culture, especially in music,” she enthused. Through her voice, she hopes to inspire Filipinos to embrace their homeland, see it with fresh eyes, and fall in love with what the Philippines has to offer.

Reflecting on her collaboration with the Department of Tourism, she describes the experience as a dream come true. “I'm so grateful to be given the trust and opportunity, this has always been a dream of mine to represent my country this way. And even in my own ways as I continue to travel around the world also, I will continue to try to be the best representation of the Philippines, especially in my music and craft.” This commitment shows her passion in showcasing not just Filipino talent but also the Philippines to the world.

“I will always be proud of the Filipino hospitality and congeniality, whether here in our country or abroad. There's so many of our kababayans all over the world and I've heard time and time again from other nationalities of how Filipinos are always some of the most friendly and hardworking people. On the other hand, I will always vouch for our music scene here, both with Original Pilipino Music and local concerts. And of course, we have a lot of beautiful islands, an interesting history and a vast mix of cultures.” Having heard countless stories of Filipinos known for their kindness and hard work across the globe, she strives to carry that same positive spirit wherever she goes. Through her music, she hopes to keep the Filipino identity alive and inspire others to celebrate their heritage, as they fall in love with the Philippines, one experience at a time.

LUMOS Tablet Review: A Surprisingly Affordable Game-Changer

I’ll be honest. I was super excited when I first got my hands on the LUMOS Tablet. With so many affordable tablets on the market, most tend to skimp on either performance or usability. But after using the LUMOS Tablet for a while, I have to say—it’s a solid little device that punches way above its price tag!

First Impressions: Sleek and Lightweight

Right out of the box, the 10.1-inch display caught my attention. It’s slim, lightweight, and easy to carry, which makes it perfect for tossing into a bag without worrying about extra bulk.

One of my favorite things? The LUMOS Tablet Bundle. Instead of just the tablet, you get a Bluetooth keyboard, mouse, stylus pen, and a case cover that doubles as a stand. Basically, it turns this tablet into a mini-laptop, which is a huge plus for someone like me who works from anywhere (WFA). I don't even need to bring my laptop when I'm on a working vacation.

Performance: Snappy for Everyday Use

Let’s talk specs. The tablet packs 8GB of RAM (which is rare in budget tablets), and you can definitely feel the difference. Apps open quickly, multitasking is smooth, and there’s no frustrating lag when switching between tasks.

I mainly used it for:

Work on the go – With WPS Office and Google Docs, I managed to draft emails and edit documents without needing my laptop.

Netflix and YouTube – The 4K-supported IPS display made streaming surprisingly enjoyable.

Online games - It’s not a gaming tablet but it runs smoothly. I enjoy playing my favorite Gardenscapes and Bingo Blitz whenever I need a break from work.

Battery Life: All-Day Use? Yes, Please!

One of my biggest pet peeves with tablets is having to charge them constantly. Thankfully, the 6000 mAh battery on the LUMOS Tablet lasts around 8 hours on moderate use. I took it on a café for a quick work session, watched videos, browsed the web, and it still had juice left by the evening.

Extra Features That I Loved

Screen Mirroring – I didn’t expect this feature at all! You can wirelessly cast the tablet to your Smart TV or your LUMOS Projector, making it perfect for streaming movies or showing presentations.

Parental Controls – If you’re a parent, you’ll love that YouTube Kids and other parental settings that are built in, making it a safe device for kids. I can share this with my 9-year old nephew without worry.

Final Verdict: Is the LUMOS Tablet Worth It?

For its PhP6,999 price tag, the LUMOS Tablet is an absolute steal. It’s not just a budget tablet—it’s a well-rounded device that offers great performance, a solid display, and useful accessories at an affordable price.

If you prefer the LUMOS Tablet Bundle with keyboard, mouse, pen, and case cover, you can get it for only PhP8,499.

If you’re looking for a tablet for work, study, entertainment, or casual browsing, this one’s a great pick. With its budget-friendly price, you’ll be pleasantly surprised with its top-notch performance!

Would I recommend it? 100% YES.

What’s Brewing in Shillong? ASEAN-India Artists’ Camp Returns: 10 Days, 3 Regions, 1 Cultural Canvas

Wednesday, April 02, 2025

ASEAN-India Artists’ Camp

  • The camp brings artists from ASEAN, Timor Leste, and India into a shared creative space, where ideas will flow as freely as paint and conversations bridge cultures
  • The masterpieces created during the camp will first be displayed in a special exhibition in Shillong, followed by showcases in New Delhi and Malaysia, the ASEAN Chair for 2025

The ASEAN-India Artists’ Camp (AIAC) is set to return for its third edition from March 29 to April 7, 2025, bringing together 21 artists from ASEAN Member States, Timor Leste, and India for a ten-day residency in Shillong. Organized by Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in collaboration with Seher, the camp will mark ten years of India’s Act East Policy, using art as a medium for cultural dialogue in line with the decisions taken and endorsed in the 21st ASEAN-India Summit and India’s comprehensive strategic partnership ahead in the field of culture.

First conceptualized in 2017 by Sanjeev Bhargava, Founder-Director of SEHER, AIAC has emerged as a key platform for cultural engagement between India and Southeast Asia. Unlike traditional diplomatic gatherings, it will offer a more intimate setting, where artists from different regions, tucked away together, will spend days exchanging techniques, experiences, and perspectives over steaming cups of tea. The focus is not solely on the stunning works they will create - though those are sure to impress - but on the quiet, meaningful exchanges that will echo long after the camp wraps up. Over ten days, artists will create original works, take part in workshops on classical dance, music, and handicrafts, and explore India’s artistic traditions in a collaborative setting. They will also hold interactive sessions with local art students in Shillong and conduct a special workshop at a local school, where visiting ASEAN artists will share their skills and experiences with young learners.

Some of the ASEAN artists taking part in the camp are Ms. Chong Ai Chezer (Singapore), Mr. Abilio da Conceição Silva (Timor Leste), Mr. Panich Phupratana (Thailand), Mr. Phonesith Yernsensuly (Lao PDR), Ms. Mohana Kumara Velu (Malaysia), Ms. Lou Lim (Philippines), Ms. Nwe Ni Soe (Myanmar), Mr. Ros Norak (Cambodia), along with Indian artists Ms. Mrudula Kunatharaju (multi-disciplinary artist), Ms. Mousumi Biswas (realistic figurative paintings), Ms. Japani Shyam Dhurwey (Gond artist), Mr. Kazi Nasir (realistic contemporary nature and wildlife paintings), Mr. Prakash Joshi (Phad artist), Mr. Aayush (wash painting), Mr. Vinay Kumar (Cheriyal artist), Mr. Bappa Chitrakar (Kali Ghat artist), Mr. Chandan Bez Baruah (Postmodernism in Landscape), Mr. Raphael Warjri (acrylic painting).

During the camp, the artists will talk about various forms of painting and their shared cultural histories in various styles and forms of art, initiated and guided by the esteemed Mentors of the Camp—Samindranath Majumdar, Tanmoy Samanta, and Yogendra Tripathi. Each artist will create one work of art, representing different styles—contemporary, modern, traditional, impressionist—while still carrying the essence of their own culture and history.

Mr. Sanjeev Bhargava said, "This camp feels like a heartbeat shared across borders. A gathering where artists don’t just meet, but truly see each other. It’s special because it’s messy and real: paint-stained hands, late-night stories, and the kind of laughter that bridges languages. For me, it’s about watching strangers become family through art, carrying their traditions and dreams into something new, something that lingers in your chest long after the brushes are down."

A virtual introductory session on March 25 will bring the artists together ahead of the residency. The official press conference and launch of the camp will take place in Delhi on March 29, before the camp moves to Shillong. The event will close with a ceremony featuring cultural performances and an exhibition, attended by senior officials from the Ministry of External Affairs.

The masterpieces created during the camp will first be unveiled in New Delhi in a two-day showcase before making their way to Malaysia, the ASEAN Chair for 2025, for a week-long exhibition. With each edition, AIAC continues to add a new dimension to ASEAN-India Dialogue Relations, using art to build deeper cultural and regional ties.

Dioceldo Sy’s legacy immortalized in a heartfelt children’s book

Dioceldo’s Big Dream

The most touching moment of Dioceldo Sy’s 67th birthday celebration was the unveiling of a deeply personal tribute – his daughter, Denice Sy, authored a children’s book in his honor.

Titled “Dioceldo’s Big Dream”, the book captures the inspiring journey of Dioceldo, Ever Bilena Cosmetic Inc.’s founder and CEO who’s also hailed as the Father of Philippine Cosmetics, from childhood to his remarkable achievements in the cosmetics industry.

Co-authored by Ivan Arlantico and illustrated by Angelica Valdez Agulto-Pulido, the book draws inspiration from biographies like Big John (about John Gokongwei), A Letter to My Grandchildren by Waltermart founder Wilson Lim Jr., and Manila Bulletin’s Emilio Yap biography. Denice expressed that “Dioceldo’s Big Dream” is not for sale but was created as a family keepsake, ensuring that her father’s legacy lives on for generations.

The book was unveiled as part of a grand birthday celebration, spearheaded by Dioceldo’s life partner, Christine Codrington and his children, Denice and Donway, at Sage Grill in Makati Shangri-La Hotel. Over 100 of Dioceldo’s closest friends and family gathered to surprise him. Hosting the event was his brother, Silliman Sy, Ever Bilena’s COO, who set the tone for an evening filled with laughter, heartfelt moments, and surprises.

Among the distinguished guests were business leaders such as Herbert Sy of SM Markets, Robina Gokongwei-Pe of Robinsons Retail Holdings Inc., Luis Yu of Landers Philippines, Samuel Po of JS Unitrade Merchandise Inc., Atty. Nilo Divina of Divina Law, and retired Bloomberry President & COO Thomas Arasi. Also in attendance were Miss Grand International 2021 1st Runner-Up Samantha Bernardo-Moore, actress Ara Mina, boxing champion Gerry Peñalosa, and Greek Ambassador to the Philippines Ioannis Pediotis and his wife, Aliki Pediotis. His high school batchmates reunited for the special occasion as well.

KAIA collaborates with hitmaker Zack Tabudlo on the lighthearted pop banger “TANGA”

The song tackles a kind of love that borders on blind innocence

Filipino girl group KAIA continues to deliver another inescapable bop in the form of “TANGA”—out today via Sony Music Entertainment. Produced and composed by Zack Tabudlo, one of the country’s most sought-after hitmakers, the track blends pop confection with a lightness and ‘90s R&B flair.

For the five-piece alphas, the opportunity to collaborate with Zack Tabudlo was a dream come true.

“At first, it was hard to believe that we were actually given the opportunity to work with him, especially since we’ve been fans of his music for so long,” the group shares in a collective statement. “From our trainee days and pre-debut era, we would sing along to his songs, and now, it feels surreal to have collaborated with him on TANGA. We've been preparing this song and keeping it a secret since last year, and we’re so excited to finally share it with you all soon.”

At its core, “TANGA” centers on a love that borders on naiveté, a relatable feeling that some people go through at some point in their life. Balancing a humorous, light vibe with a sense of introspection, the song tells the all-too-familiar story of choosing to ignore the red flags in a relationship just to hold on a little longer.

KAIA explains the rationale of interpreting a material that doubles as a cautionary tale. “When we first listened to the song, it made us feel less alone. It’s like a reminder that it’s okay to go through a phase where you feel ‘tanga’ in love, as long as you eventually find your way back. The contrast between the playful sound and the introspective lyrics makes the song even more special: it’s a journey of realizing your worth. And in the end, you see that the people who truly care for you, like your family and friends, have always been there to support you.”

Beyond lending his expertise as a songwriter and producer, Zack was integral in adding a unique dimension to KAIA’s well-roundedness, allowing them to showcase their range and versatility with a more nuanced approach.

According to the Walang Biruan phenoms, the award-winning chart-topper was very detail-oriented as a collaborator, pushing them to own their artistry in the recording booth, which it turns out, was actually his home.

“The whole process felt so organic,” KAIA describes the collaborative process between them and Zack. “He encouraged us to be looser and freer in creating our own ad-libs and melodies. Zack also introduced us to new styles and techniques, which made the experience even more exciting. Seeing how he works and how effortlessly he brings a song to life was truly inspiring.”

With “TANGA” marking a pivot to an interesting sonic direction for the girl group, KAIA is currently gearing up for their upcoming EP, which they hint will feature “new styles, fresh vibes, and music that truly represents us.”

KAIA’s “TANGA” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.
