Moymoy Lulumboy 6 and other fantasy titles lead Lampara Publishing’s new releases

Wednesday, September 18

With ABS-CBN picking up the rights to develop the beloved fantasy series into a multimedia franchise, Moymoy Lulumboy 6 instantly became one of the most anticipated releases on the biggest and longest running book fair in the Philippines.

The sixth installment debuted during the first day of the Manila International Book Fair (MIBF) last September 13 at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasig City.

Following Moymoy Lulumboy’s journey as a fascinating character who continues to grapple with the complexities of adolescent life, Lampara Publishing’s latest novel succeeds in debunking the preconceived notions about aswang by going beyond its role in popular culture.

In addition to Moymoy’s adolescent issues, the book marks the boy-aswang’s return to the enchanting world of Gabun where he saves his brother Alangkaw and childhood friend Hasmin from evil forces.

Moymoy Lulumboy: Ang Ugat at ang Propesiya is Segundo Matias Jr.’s sixth offering from the Moymoy Lulumboy series. When asked about the novel’s transition towards a more “Young Adult” direction, the award-winning author pointed out his fascination on writing characters that navigate a flawed life. “Gusto kong gumawa ng isang YA novel na gaya ng Mga Batang Poz. Yung buhay ng isang teenager o young adult: nag-e-explore, madalas magkamali at pagkatapos ay natututo sa buhay.”

These vulnerable, colorful and inspiring creatures populate Segundo Matias Jr.’s string of young adult titles such as Angelica, Ang Multo Ng Balete Drive, whose heroine broke ghost rules to save a friend’s life, and Moñito, Ang Mabait na Demonyo, a kindhearted demon born without a horn and a tail. Both novels were launched on the same day as Moymoy Lulumboy: Ang Ugat at ang Propesiya, leading Segundo Matias Jr.’s growing roster of fantasy titles.

Completing the publisher turned novelist’s showcase during MIBF week is Mga Batang Poz, a 2018 young adult novel whose digital series adaptation is considered to be one of the most viewed streaming titles on popular online platform, iWantv. Threading an important step forward in understanding the lives of People living with HIV-AIDS, the book garnered generally positive acclaim from various critics and publications, with Philippine Star Supreme praising the material for bringing attention to a subject that has long been derided by religious conservatives.

Moymoy Lulumboy: Ang Ugat at ang Propesiya, Angelica, Ang Multo Ng Balete Drive, Moñito, and Mga Batang Poz are available on Precious Pages retail outlets, National Book Store, Pandayan book shop and leading books stores nationwide. For inquiries you may contact, inquiry@lamparabooks.com.ph.

Focus On What Matters

Monday, December 5

Have you ever been in one of those moments when you feel like you've wasted a year in your life because despite all the efforts you put into achieving something, you ended up empty-handed?  I welcomed 2016 secretly crying while watching the fireworks. I felt so gypped. I had a happy life (or so I think.) What happened?

It has only been two weeks since my dad passed away when I was invited to attend the launch of Coach Pia Acevedo's second book "Focus on What Matters" at Edsa Shangri-la Hotel. Although I self-imposed that I'm taking a short leave from attending events, I felt like I need to hear what Coach Pia has to say and hoped that this book will help me find focus amidst the drama in my life.

Coach Pia shared her near-death experience that has led her to putting things in perspective. It was January 1, 2004 when she woke up having difficulty in breathing. She went to sleep okay and then woke up with a severe allergic reaction that almost ended her life. It was at this moment that she asked herself, "If these were my final moments before judgement, then have I loved enough? Have I maximized my full potential here on earth? Have I lived my life's purpose?" It was through these life-changing situations, or even ordinary and neutral ones, that it is always wise to focus on what matters.

"Focus on What Matters" talks about how to live a meaningful life and the process one has to go through to be able to focus on the things that are necessary and let go of the things that are not.

A peek into the chapters of the book
"Focusing on what matters begins with laying the foundation for finding clarity through the exercise of self-mastery, self-development, and self-commitment -- a process we call "Inner Work", says Coach Pia.

The book also comes with a journal where you can write down your thoughts as you go through the chapters. This will help you gain insights and evaluate your feelings as you go deeper in your personal process.

"How do I stay focused?"

I need this book. I have vowed to devote a day every week to work on finding focus. I want to understand the gap between my personal preferences and the expectations of the world. I want to hone my skills at finding clarity and staying focused despite the uncertainties that life continues to bring me. I want a better ME.

Are you losing sleep because of overthinking about the things you did or should have done? Are the people's opinions of who you are affect you because you felt like they were not seeing the real you? Do you want to find balance in your life? Grab a copy of this book and let us together welcome 2017 with a positive outlook and a certainty that we will be better than who we were in 2016.

"Focus on What Matters" is available in Fully Booked and selected National Bookstore branches nationwide.

Virginia Close: The Murder In Desert Inn Book Launch

Wednesday, November 18

I was invited last Monday to attend the book launch of The Murder in Desert Inn written by Filipino author Virginia Close at the cozy Book and Border Cafe in Tomas Morato.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Virginia was a Mass Communication graduate of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. She moved to Australia in her 20's where she started a family and explored the world. Writing has always been her passion but was placed on the backseat while she raised her children. One of her child was even amused when she found out that Virginia loves writing. Thirty years later, her dream of publishing a book came true.

THE BOOK

Virginia's love for mystery and drama is evident in The Murder in Desert Inn. Somehow, parts and pieces of the main character Nelly reveal something about Virginia. At times I felt like I was reading about her.

Nelly is a Filipina journalist who's fond of adventure and well-traveled. The interesting characters that were introduced in the book have played  vital roles for Nelly to find what she has been looking for -- her identity.

I don't want to give out too much and spoil the mystery. Buy the book and be prepared to spend hours reading.

THE EXPERIENCE

It was surreal to meet someone face to face whose reality is my lifelong dream. Like her, I also dream of one day publishing my own book.

One day... someday...
