Earn Money Through Job Referrals: GCash, PasaJob launch GJobs to provide income opportunities

Friday, November 10

GCash, the Philippines’ number one finance super app, has partnered with PasaJob, the country's first and only long-chain referral-based employment platform, to introduce a brand-new way of earning money aside from the regular 9-5 or business via referrals. Users may earn up to Php10,000 by successfully referring their friends and family for any job opportunity.

With this partnership, GCash and PasaJob are launching GJobs, a new GCash feature that leverages referrals to make hiring easier, faster, and more reliable, as vouched for by professionals.

“In line with our vision of ‘Finance for All’, this partnership is a good opportunity for our millions of users to earn additional income and to look for their dream jobs that are being offered by the biggest and best companies in the Philippines.” said GCash Chief People Officer Robert Gonzales. “We’re starting with big companies right now but we’re really hoping we can attract micro, small, and medium enterprises as well in posting their job requirements on GJobs.”

To use the feature, simply navigate through the GCash app and tap "View All." Scroll down to the “Enjoy” category where you can find the “Jobs” icon. Once the user clicks on the Jobs Icon, they will be able to refer jobs from reputable companies from BPO to IT, Sales, and over 20 more industries with their corresponding referral fees, totaling millions of potential earnings for referrers.

How to refer and earn through GJobs?

  1. Run through the job list and carefully assess if anyone from your network fits the job qualifications and could be a qualified candidate.
  2. Search the job list with ease by utilizing the filters for different categories or sorting the jobs according to the newest listings, top salary, or top referral fee.
  3. Once you find the perfect job, click the “Refer” button.
  4. Enter the full name and email address of the person you will refer the job to. You have six referral credits per job opening, and make sure to read the payout rules for your potential earnings.
  5. Whenever you make a referral, you and your referee will receive an email from PasaJob. You can also check the status of your referrals by tapping "Referrals" on the navigation bar at the bottom of the app.
  6. If a referral leads to a successful hire, you, as the referrer, will receive the referral fee as a reward based on the job’s payout schedule, and terms. Just like that, you’re all set to earn more while helping your friends and loved ones find their dream jobs!

To sign up for a GJobs account, you may download the GCash app from the Google Play Store and the App Store. For more information, please visit www.gcash.com and https://pasajob.com/gjobs.

What You'll Need To Become a Paralegal

Tuesday, May 23

Choosing a career as a paralegal offers various opportunities for growth and development, as well as rewarding work experience. The demand for paralegals has risen considerably in recent years, making it an attractive career path for many. But what does it take to become a successful paralegal, and what skills are necessary to excel in this profession? This article will outline the key requirements for becoming a paralegal and provide valuable insights to help you on your journey. Keep reading to find out more.

Educational Requirements and Certification

The first and most crucial step in becoming a paralegal is meeting the educational requirements. Most employers prefer candidates with at least an associate degree, and increasingly, they are looking for those with an American Bar Association (ABA) approved bachelor's degree in paralegal studies or a related field. Earning a degree from an ABA approved paralegal certificate program can make you even more competitive in the job market.

Additionally, many employers prefer paralegals who are certified. While certification is not always required, it shows a commitment to the profession and expertise in the field. Several organizations offer paralegal certification examinations, including the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) and the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA). These certifications can complement your educational background and provide an extra edge when applying for paralegal positions.

Lastly, joining professional associations such as the National Association of Scholars as a student is also beneficial to further your professional development. Membership in these organizations can provide you with access to resources, training, and networking opportunities that can help boost your career.

Develop Essential Skills

Paralegals perform a wide range of tasks and responsibilities, making it essential to have solid skills to succeed in this field. One of the most important skills for a paralegal is strong written and verbal communication. Paralegals often draft legal documents, conduct interviews, and communicate with attorneys, clients, and court personnel. As such, effectively expressing ideas and information is of utmost importance.

Moreover, paralegals need excellent research and analytical abilities. They are responsible for gathering and analyzing legal information and evaluating the relevance and strength of potential evidence. Such skills require attention to detail, critical thinking, and the ability to synthesize large amounts of information.

Technical proficiency is also crucial for a successful paralegal career. Familiarity with legal research platforms, document management software, and Microsoft Office applications can greatly improve your efficiency and productivity in the workplace.

Gaining Practical Experience

While obtaining a strong educational background and developing essential skills are important, gaining practical experience is just as crucial for aspiring paralegals. Internships, externships, or entry-level positions can provide you with invaluable hands-on experience and exposure to the legal industry. These opportunities allow you to acquire a better understanding of the paralegal role, as well as the specific tasks and responsibilities commonly encountered.

Volunteering in legal aid organizations or pro bono law offices can also be an effective way to enhance your paralegal skills and gain practical experience. These experiences help you gain confidence in your abilities, demonstrate your commitment to the legal profession, and allow you to build a network of valuable connections.

Keep Learning and Stay Informed

Staying informed of new developments and trends is essential as the legal industry evolves. By remaining up-to-date on changes in the law, new technologies, and industry best practices, you can ensure that your paralegal skills remain relevant and competitive. Make it a point to attend conferences, workshops, and webinars regularly. Additionally, subscribe to legal publications, participate in professional associations, and engage in online communities to further your knowledge and maintain your expertise.

Continuing education is also essential for maintaining paralegal certifications. Many certificate programs require paralegals to complete a certain number of continuing legal education (CLE) credits to maintain their credentials. This helps ensure you remain current with the latest legal developments and maintain high competence in your field.

By following the steps outlined above, aspiring paralegals can increase their chances of obtaining a rewarding and fulfilling career in the legal field.

WorldRemit continues to recognize OFWs’ hard work and global impact this Labor Day

Sunday, April 30

 OFW Labor Day

Labor Day is celebrated to honor the contributions of workers and the centuries-old labor movement. Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), among the largest group of migrant workers globally, are no exception from being recognized back in their home country. Often, OFWs endure challenging work conditions, homesickness, and cultural differences just to provide for their family and friends back home.

“Labor Day is a time to pay tribute to the hard work, determination, and selflessness of OFWs. It’s also the perfect time to recognize how they provide for their families, but also help improve the global economy,” said Earl Melivo, Head of APAC at WorldRemit

Christian, a sea-based electrical engineer, shared about his experiences working abroad for over a decade. "As an OFW, I know firsthand the struggles that we face every day to provide for our families. It was especially hard during the pandemic, but till now we keep working to support everyone who’s counting on us," he said.

Indeed, the COVID-19 pandemic brought a new set of challenges to OFWs. For instance, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported a 75% drop in OFW deployment in 2020—the lowest deployment number in over three decades which had a flow-on effect for both international and local economies. The Department of Migrant Workers have also cited that deployments remain below one million workers per year for the past three years, still below pre-pandemic levels.

Rising cost of living caused by increased inflation and global supply chain issues have also reduced migrant remittances. The IOM cited a decline in overseas money transfers due to an economic downturn and job losses in a 2022 report.

Despite the challenges, Christian urged his countrymen to not lose heart.

“The migrant work landscape has come a long way since I first started over 10 years ago, but there’s still much to improve about it. We should continue to work together to advocate for better working conditions and the protection of our rights,” he said.

“Para na ‘to sa future ng mga pamilya natin, mga susunod pa sa ‘tin, pati na rin ng bansa!” he added. (We should do this for the future of our loved ones, the next generation of OFWs, and also the country!)

With proactive support from the government in recent months, migrant Filipinos stand to fill gaps in a global, post-pandemic labor market.

Digital remittance platform WorldRemit joins Christian in honoring the unwavering dedication of OFWs this Labor Day. Together with the administration, it aims to remain a valuable partner to millions of hardworking Filipinos abroad.

"On behalf of WorldRemit, we would like to express our gratitude and appreciation to all OFWs and migrant workers around the world. Your hard work inspires us to keep doing what we do, and we are always proud to be a part of your journey,” said Melivo. “We wish you all a happy Labor Day!"

 best workplace

Best Places to Work says that the company delivers outstanding work experience for its employees

Amway Philippines has been hailed as the top workplace in the country in 2022 by Best Places to Work, a prestigious international certification program that’s considered as the “Platinum Standard” in identifying and recognizing top workplaces around the world.

According to Best Places to Work, Amway Philippines—the local affiliate of Amway, a leading entrepreneur-led health and wellness company and the number 1 direct-selling company in the world—ensures that their “employees are happy, healthy, and enjoy coming to work”. In fact, Amway also emerged as the program’s fifth best place to work in the world in 2022 for “demonstrating excellence in the workplace by creating differentiated employee experiences and inclusive cultures that lead to stronger, more sustainable business results”.

The international organization pointed out that despite the global challenges of increasing employee turnover and declining engagement level, the average level of engagement of the Amway Philippines and the seven other top employers in the Philippines is at 84%.

“This achievement not only demonstrates the ongoing commitment of those employers to building and sustaining an open and transparent work environment, but also their efforts in keeping business engagement firmly rooted in trust, ethics, and behaviors,” Best Places to Work underlined.

To determine the top workplaces in the Philippines for the year, Best Places to Work deployed a methodology that aims to understand how well organizations engaged their employees and demonstrated best human resources or HR practices. Every year in Philippines, the program also partners with over 50 organizations across different industries to help them measure, benchmark, and improve their HR practices and use data-driven insights to add value, enhance agility, and increase organizational effectiveness.

“This recognition from no less than a prestigious international body is an affirmation of Amway Philippines’ longstanding commitment to our employees’ overall wellbeing. We believe that organizations where employees feel valued can provide the best level of service to their customers and stakeholders,” said Leni Olmedo, the Country Manager of Amway Philippines.

“This belief is founded on The Founders’ Fundamentals and Values which are deeply embedded in our corporate culture globally and remain unchanged since the company’s inception in 1959. These values of partnership, integrity, achievement, personal worth, personal responsibility, and free enterprise have guided decision-making at all levels, and for this reason, there is a great sense of belongingness and cohesiveness within the organization. This achievement will further inspire us to work harder to sustain and strengthen our employee engagement and workplace culture.”

More female linecrew set to join Meralco workforce

Friday, December 16

 female linecrew

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is set to welcome new female linecrew as part of its continuing efforts to champion diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

Thirty-four (34) aspirants, including 13 women, have completed the six-month Meralco Linecrew Training Program (MLTP) that started last May. They will be endorsed for further assessment and possible hiring and deployment.

The MLTP is a comprehensive training course open to both men and women that involves a series of lectures, thorough physical conditioning, critical assessments, and on-the-job training (OJT) program geared towards Meralco’s efforts to continuously develop a pool of skilled linecrew.

“All of the new MLTP trainees are equipped with the necessary training and tools so that they can safely perform their jobs to the best of their abilities. I am confident that the latest batch of MLTP graduates will use their new learnings to help deliver excellent service to Meralco’s customers,” MLTP Manager Roman Leandro Manlapaz said.

KEEPING THE LIGHTS ON. Thirty-four (34) Meralco Linecrew Training Program (MLTP) graduates, including 13 women, are ready to join Meralco to help deliver stable and reliable electricity service to customers after completing the six-month course at the Meralco Power Academy - Power Base in Antipolo City.

Traditionally operating in a male-dominated industry, Meralco pioneered the training and hiring of female linecrew in Southeast Asia back in 2013. A total of 11 women from the first batch are still working in the company in various capacities, helping deliver stable and reliable electricity service to Meralco customers.

This year’s relaunch of the MLTP forms part of the power distributor’s goal to increase women representation in the workforce to nearly half or 40% by 2030.

Zuzette Castro, a 32-year-old overseas Filipino worker who is part of the newest batch of MLTP graduates, said the MLTP gave her an opportunity to return to the Philippines at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic to raise her one-year-old son.

“Being a linecrew is hard but what motivates me is the thought that this job will allow me to provide for my family and be of service to the public,” she said in Filipino.

From working as a gasoline station cashier in Dubai, Castro is now equipped to climb utility poles to ensure a steady power supply. During her OJT, Castro was among those who helped restore power in Rizal province following the onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm Paeng.

Like Castro, John Dexter Alonte also joined the MLTP in hopes of finding a stable job so that he can better provide for his family.

The 27-year-old, who worked as a contractual hardware salesman for three years, takes inspiration from his fellow female linecrew trainees for their dedication to the craft.

“Seeing women take on jobs that are typically done by men motivates me to excel in my work since I can see them all striving to do well,” Alonte said in Filipino, adding: “When I feel discouraged or tired, I tell myself that if women can do it, so can I.”

The inclusion of female linecrew aspirants in the MLTP is part of #MBrace – Meralco’s overarching diversity and inclusion program aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (UN SDG) 5 on Gender Equality and UN SDG 10 on Reduced Inequalities.

Meralco also partnered with Don Bosco College-Canlubang for a technician scholarship program for the benefit of 15 aspiring female electrical technicians. The program covers the tuition and allowances of students undergoing the Technical Vocational Education Training Program for the dual NC II Program on Electrical Installation and Maintenance and Mechatronics that started in August.

personal trainer

A career as a personal trainer has the potential to be very lucrative and can take you in many different directions. As more people become interested in maintaining their health and fitness through a variety of activities, the demand for personal trainers also rises.

The first thing you need to do is look for a gym. If you are unable to find a personal trainer in your area, there are some gyms that offer personal training courses that are more cost-effective than paying for individual training sessions with a trainer. The next step is to enroll in a reputable online fitness training course, such as those offered by https://www.americansportandfitness.com, which will educate you on everything from the fundamentals of anatomy to the significance of maintaining a healthy diet. Now is the time to begin your job search!

The Core Competencies That Are Necessary To Be A Successful Personal Trainer

1. Health and wellness of the body

It goes without saying that a person who works as a personal trainer needs to have a high level of fitness themselves. To begin, how can your clients have faith in you to assist them in getting into shape if you yourself are overweight and out of shape? Second, a good personal trainer will demonstrate to their clients the techniques that they should be using, and in order to do this task successfully day in and day out, you need to be in excellent physical shape.

2. Knowledge of good nutrition

Personal trainers have a diverse set of abilities that can assist clients in accomplishing the goals that they have set for themselves regarding their physical fitness and healthy eating. They are extremely knowledgeable in the areas of physical fitness, nutrition, and eating in a way that is healthy. The information that they provide can assist individuals in making decisions regarding their diet, level of physical fitness, and general health.

3. Understanding of mental health and communication

Fitness and mental well-being are not two distinct but interrelated aspects of health. The psychological health of a personal trainer can have a significant bearing on the success of their business, as a healthy trainer is more likely to maintain consistency with their personal training sessions and their clientele. Personal trainers ought to have a basic understanding of the significance of psychological and mental health. When coping with mental health issues such as anxiety or depression, communication is an essential tool for protecting both yourself and your clients.

4. Social interaction and business management

Interactions in social settings are an extremely useful instrument for distinguishing one person from another. They have the ability to inspire you as well as impart a significant amount of knowledge regarding the individual with whom you are interacting. People in this day and age have a plethora of opportunities to engage in conversation with one another thanks to the proliferation of social media platforms and other channels of communication. These interactions may have a positive or negative impact on the individuals involved, and either way, they have the potential to mould individuals' personal fitness and inspire them to improve their own personal fitness. You also need to keep in mind that you are operating a business, which means that you need to understand how businesses operate, know how to market yourself to potential customers, and adhere to the rules and regulations specific to your industry.

Working as a personal trainer is a demanding occupation that comes with a significant amount of responsibility. You are assisting other people in becoming happier, healthier, and more physically fit versions of themselves. If you want to be successful in the field of personal training, you need to have all of the skills listed above in your toolbox. Only then can you hope to become a good personal trainer.

Overseas Filipino nurses bolster families amid pandemic

Monday, June 6

The coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the important role that health workers play in keeping communities operational. As modern-day heroes, nurses are on the frontlines caring for the wellbeing of citizens across the globe.

Filipino nurses in particular have helped mitigate a worldwide shortage of approximately 5.9 million nurses. In celebration of Migrant Workers Day on June 7, WorldRemit spoke with two Filipina nurses to share their stories of hope and sacrifice they have experienced in the past two years.

Overseas Filipino nurses
Karen Pros, Filipina nurse living in Texas, U.S.A

For Karen Pros, a Filipina nurse who now lives in Texas, the greatest challenge she overcame when moving abroad was the differences in culture and the different role nurses play in the United States. .

In the Philippines, Karen often worked alongside a team of intern nurses and fellows. However in the U.S., she works closely with a team of doctors in the hospital with a higher volume of patients. Her work was made even more vital by the pandemic as the nurse-to-patient ratio in certain states increased from its recommended 1:1 to 1:4.

Overseas Filipino nurses
Katrina Creer, Filipina nurse living in Australia

In 2009, Katrina Creer emigrated from the Philippines to New Zealand in search of new opportunities. Nursing can be tough and for Katrina, the greatest challenge has been adapting to the increased pressure her responsibilities at work have put on her family, many times having to isolate from her family while treating COVID-19 infected patients.

Now located in Melbourne, Australia, Katrina is regularly pulled outside of her day-to-day responsibilities and asked to work extended hours or take on additional shifts in hospitals across the city due to a high demand for healthcare professionals

Despite the challenges she has faced in the field over the past two years, Katrina says the fulfillment that she gets from nursing is enough to outweigh the challenges.

“The best part of being a nurse is to be able to say that with my job, I am able to help make the world a better place. To me, nursing is a calling rather than a profession. When I get to see patients get better and families thanking the medical team, that’s more than enough. It’s something that money can’t reciprocate or compensate for,” she said.

Katrina has also given back to her country by hosting over 30 Filipino nurses during her time in New Zealand. As one of the first Filipina nurses to migrate to New Zealand, she helped new OFWs get settled and taught them the tips and tricks of living abroad, while also accommodating them for six weeks at a time as they studied for bridging courses.

Through remittances, Karen and Katrina have given back to their country and communities. For Katrina, she is now helping her cousins finish their college degrees by sending money home for their education. While for Karen, her eldest child has been inspired by her mothers’ career and through receiving remittances, is pursuing a future in healthcare.

Online money transfer services enable Filipino nurses to continuously care and provide for their families back home despite the distance—from paying for tuition fees and uniforms, to health expenses. With the speed of WorldRemit, Katrina was able to quickly support her father when he contracted COVID and again when Typhoon Odette devastated her home province of Cebu in 2021.

“Despite the physical and emotional demands of their occupation, our Filipino nurses manage to continue to provide for their loved ones. Throughout this pandemic, OFWs have continued to be a life-force to the Philippine economy, their own households, and the citizens in their host countries. WorldRemit provides OFWs with cost-efficient, reliable digital remittance services to bridge connections and build brighter futures for their families and many others across the world,“ said WorldRemit Country Director, Earl Melivo.

Do you have enough work experience to land a healthcare job abroad?

Friday, May 13

 healthcare job abroad

Overseas doctors in countries like the UAE must have a minimum of five years of professional experience from their home country, while nurses must have at least two to three.

After long hours of studying, countless exams, hospital rotations, and clinical internships, you’re finally ready to put your healthcare degree to good use and take on actual work in the hospital. If you’re aiming to gain that experience overseas, you might need to be a little bit more patient as some healthcare regulators in other countries require a few years’ work experience in the medical field before you can land a job.

The National Health Service (NHS), the United Kingdom’s largest healthcare employer that hires a diverse range of healthcare workers worldwide, usually recommends overseas doctors to have at least two to three years of practice, post-graduate training, and certain internships to work in the UK. Meanwhile, overseas nurses need to have a registered nurse license and at least one year of work experience to have a chance to be shortlisted in the NHS.

In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), overseas healthcare professionals require work experience in the home country to qualify. For example, registered nurses must have at least two to three years of relevant work experience. On the other hand, specialist roles require more extensive consulting experience.

In other countries like the United Arab Emirates, overseas healthcare professionals need more work experience. Doctors need a minimum of five years of work history, while nurses require at least two to three. If you’re aiming for specialty roles, you need to have been in practice for at least eight years.

While this might sound discouraging for medical workers with limited work experience, don’t fret because there are many ways to gain relevant healthcare work experience:

Volunteer for medical missions. Medical mission trips allow healthcare workers to put their knowledge and skills to good use, and ultimately make them better practitioners, while at the same time help the less fortunate without access to healthcare.

Find entry-level positions that do not require work experience. There are medical facilities that are willing to hire new nurse graduates. Fresh graduates may want to look into becoming a nurse for private clinics, academic institutions, residential nurses, or in-home care.

Find a supported internship or program supported by your school. Schools may have internship programs that may be useful to develop industry knowledge and nursing skills. Sometimes, internships can lead to a network of connections and future jobs.

Explore related positions. While it’s great if your first job is a nurse, it may not always be the case for some new graduates. For others who are struggling to secure a job as a nurse may want to consider other related positions such as lab assistants or data-entry clerks. These roles can give fresh graduates some industry knowledge, which may be useful in their nursing careers.

Having these initiatives on your resume will increase your credibility and highlight your commitment to your medical career. Once you feel confident enough, you can try looking for jobs that fit your skills and work experience on TrueProfile.io, a healthcare career platform which works alongside a POEA accredited agency to provide Filipino medical professionals around the world with the opportunities they need to secure a lucrative career abroad.

Simultaneously, you must collect all the basic requirements, which include either a 1x1 or 2x2 ID picture, a PSA-authenticated birth certificate, a resume, college diploma, transcript of records, employer contract, marriage contract (if applicable), NBI clearance, a passport (valid for at least six months), as well as licenses and certifications. You must also apply for a working visa once the employer offers the job.

All these documents must be verified, which you can easily do with the help of TrueProfile.io. Through its blockchain technology, you no longer need to verify your documents over and over again when you apply. Meralco relaunched recruitment for aspiring female linecrew

Friday, April 22

female linecrew

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has relaunched a recruitment and capability-building program for aspiring female linecrew members as part of the Company’s commitment to drive and heighten gender diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

The Meralco Linecrew Training Program (MLTP) aims to develop a pool of skilled female line workers, who are envisioned to eventually become part of the Meralco workforce.

A total of 15 individuals will be part of the newest batch of trainees under the MLTP. For a period of five months beginning May, they will undergo a series of lectures and rigorous physical training and endurance conditioning programs that will build and hone their skills to properly use manually operated tools and safely climb Meralco utility poles. They will subsequently be assessed for hiring and deployment.

Meralco, which operates in a traditionally male-dominated industry, pioneered the training and hiring of female linecrew in Southeast Asia back in 2013. The power distributor currently has nine female line workers who help deliver reliable electricity service to Meralco customers.

Charmaine Angeles, who was part of the pioneering batch and currently works as a linecrew member at Meralco’s Valenzuela Sector, said that the program helped broaden her knowledge and experience in her line of work.

“I learned how to drive a truck, got along with my colleagues, and most importantly, helped in delivering electricity service to homes,” she said in Filipino, adding: “I believe that women are also capable of doing what men do. It only takes courage, knowledge, positivity, and trust in oneself to be a successful linecrew member.”

Solidifying commitment to diversity and inclusion

The MLTP is among the initiatives on gender inclusivity geared towards helping Meralco reach its goal to have women employees represent 40% of its workforce by 2030.

Meralco’s recently established policy on Diversity and Inclusion further cements its commitment to advancing workforce diversity and to nurturing an inclusive and safe workplace for its employees by ensuring equal employment opportunities for all.

Through this new policy, Meralco pledges to respect all individual and value differences across gender, age, ethnicity, physical appearance, health, family status, religion, sexual orientation, and socio-economic background.

“The Company believes that when its people feel respected, valued, and treated fairly, they are more motivated to perform – delivering the Meralco core value of malasakit when serving customers and community,” the policy states.

The Diversity and Inclusion Policy extends to all areas of Meralco’s business and is also promoted across the Company’s subsidiaries and affiliates.

In addition, earlier this year, Meralco partnered with Don Bosco College-Canlubang for a technician scholarship program that will benefit 15 aspiring female electrical technicians.

The program will cover the tuition fees and allowances of the students who will undergo the Technical Vocational Education Training Program for the dual NC II Program on Electrical Installation and Maintenance and Mechatronics beginning August.

All the above initiatives fall under Meralco’s overarching Diversity and Inclusion program called #MBrace, which aims to promote and nurture a gender-balanced and inclusive workplace.

#MBrace’s aims are aligned with United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (UN SDG) 5 on Gender Equality and UN SDG 10 on Reduced Inequalities.

The program also fortifies Meralco’s commitment to the UN Global Compact’s Principle 6 on Elimination of Discrimination in Employment, and supports the UN Women’s Empowerment Principles as well as the advocacies of the Philippine Business Coalition for Women Empowerment.

When developing tech leaders, a global perspective is key

Global Leaders Program

Shopee cultivates tech talent with overseas training and exposure

Over the last decade, technology has radically changed the way businesses all over the world look and operate. Accompanying this meteoric change among businesses, is the need for different leadership traits.

According to Forbes[1], key traits that future leaders will need to possess include the ability to embrace technology and employ a global citizen mindset. This mindset includes celebrating diversity and understanding new cultures in order to gain knowledge on how to enter and succeed in new global markets. On the other hand, embracing technology will allow leaders to improve efficiency in the organization.

Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, continues to instill these fundamental traits into young, tech-driven talent through the Global Leaders Program. This year marks its fourth iteration as it continues to mold tech leaders of tomorrow.

The Global Leaders Program is a 2-year graduate program consisting of four 6-month local and overseas rotations open to final-year students and young professionals with up to two years of working experience. Participants can expect to receive mentorship from senior management, a rigorous training curriculum under the various Shopee departments, and the opportunity to work on highly impactful projects. And one of the key experiences of the Global Leaders Program is the opportunity to work in different Shopee markets across the region and gain pivotal exposure to the tech industry. Throughout the overseas rotation, Shopee will provide mobility support to GLP Associates to ensure hassle-free overseas accommodations and seamless visa applications.

Karen Perez, Head of People at Shopee Philippines, said “At Shopee, we understand how crucial developing a global perspective is in pushing the Philippine tech industry forward. Through the overseas rotations of the Global Leaders Program, we believe that we can help broaden the horizons of young Filipino talent. We are deeply committed to delivering more opportunities to hone the skills of young Filipino professionals and support the growth of our local digital economy.”

Jan, a GLP associate currently completing her second overseas rotation in Thailand under the Marketing Department, has shared what influenced her decision to apply. “The promise of diverse rotation and regional exposure at such a young age attracted me to the Global Leaders Program. I believe the program brings in many unique opportunities that would allow me to launch my career and create immediate impact.” she said.

For Lance, another GLP associate that is also currently assigned to Thailand, the opportunity to gain regional exposure abroad has provided him with a better understanding of our local situation. He shared, “Being able to live and work in the same company, but in a different country immediately provides me with a new ‘perspective’. This is quite useful because it helps me notice the differences between Thailand and the Philippines in terms of the needs of our buyers and sellers, organizational structure, and working-style. These differences helped me strategize on how we can better tailor our solutions or ways of working to fit different local contexts.”

Koko, on the other hand, completed his overseas training in Singapore last August 2021. Being trained abroad gave him the opportunity to grow as both a professional and an individual. He said, “I was able to experience different work functions, roles, industries, and even markets in the short span of two years. I also had the opportunity to take on a lot of responsibility early on in my career, which helped me build confidence in my own knowledge and skills.”

Young Filipinos looking to challenge themselves and drive change in the tech industry are welcome to apply to Shopee’s Global Leaders Program here: https://careers.shopee.ph/GLP. The application period has been extended until April 30 2022.

Human-centered, tech-driven strategy define FWD’s future of work

Friday, April 1

FWD Life Insurance

FWD Life Insurance is equipping its employees with an app built in-house complemented by a new human-centered office design in its head office in BGC, Taguig. This is the latest FWD Anywhere initiative, which embraces different styles of working and is aligned with FWD’s global Group Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy of harnessing value in its people’s talents.

“Our people are what make us a vibrant and dynamic workplace. The pandemic gave us an opportunity to further our efforts on celebrating their unique strengths and explore innovative solutions to create an environment where everyone can do their best work while boosting their health and wellbeing,” says FWD Life Insurance President and CEO Li Hao Zhuang.

Workspace Plus

FWD’s exclusive work management app called Workspace+ was the result of an evaluation of the employees’ needs as the world moves toward the next normal. The Insurer’s hybrid work arrangement is the future of work that offers its employees greater flexibility.

FWD employees have the choice to work from the office 50% of the time, and they are given the freedom to work from anywhere for the remaining half. Employees use the app to agree with their managers and teams in advance of their work schedule, reserve work desks and parking spaces at the office building. They confirm their reservation simply by scanning the QR code in the app to check in – all to provide a positive experience in the tech-enabled hybrid work setup.

Vita Marie Guillen, FWD’s Chief People and Culture Officer, says that FWD’s key priority is the wellbeing of its employees. “We care about our employees’ overall health. It’s part of our DNA and it defines how we work. By giving them these tools, we enable them to efficiently plan their schedule in the office, balance quality time at home, and afford them the opportunity of sustainable behavioral change,” Vita affirms.

FWD has been implementing a “work from anywhere” policy since 2018. Initially designed to help ease employees’ daily traffic and commuting woes when the pandemic lockdowns and quarantine protocols were implemented by the government, all FWD needed to do was enhance its hybrid work plan and fully enforce it into the future of work.

Human-centered workplace

FWD refurbished its BGC head office in a way that enhances employee experience, focusing on building a collaborative, supportive and respectful environment, and giving priority to employees’ physical, mental and social wellbeing.

They are given the best seats right by the floor-to-ceiling windows and corner spots where natural light streams and a spectacular view of the bustling city can be seen.

The new office is generous with space to promote social distancing, at the same time encouraging employees to move around freely and be physically active, including the option of standing work desks. The pantry is big enough to double as a huddle area. Collaborative areas are conducive not just for brainstorming sessions but socializing as well.

Creativity and innovation pervade the atmosphere. The state-of-the art media studio is designed to allow FWD creators to produce valuable, quality content for its customers. The orange brand color dominates the entire office to fuel passion, vibrance and dynamism among the employees. Greenery and trellises in the Innovation area add to the inspiring work atmosphere. Meeting rooms have been assigned names after popular Filipino festivals such as ‘Ati-atihan’, ‘Sinulog’ and ‘Dinagyang’ not only to promote local culture but to also reaffirm the company’s tagline: Celebrate living.

“We intend to celebrate diversity and innovation in the way we work toward the next normal with a motivated workforce who will continue changing the way people feel about insurance,” concludes Li Hao.

Is it a good time for Filipino nurses to apply to work abroad?

healthcare professional

The recent surge of the new COVID-19 variant has forced many countries to close their borders once again. For many industries, this has meant that dreams of working overseas are on hold for now. However, for healthcare professionals, the majority of travel restrictions are loosened due to the current global health crisis. In particular, Filipino nurses are needed now more than ever in many parts of the world.

So if you’re a Filipino nurse dreaming of pursuing a career abroad amid the pandemic, TrueProfile.io, a platform that provides Filipino healthcare professionals around the world with the tools they need to secure a lucrative career abroad, shares some tips to make the dream happen:
