Wednesday, July 31

PLDT High Speed Hitters

The High Speed Hitters just leveled up their roster with the return of Russian powerhouse Lena Samoilenko and the addition of rising star Angge Alcantara. Can this dynamic duo be the missing piece to finally clinch that elusive championship?

Lena Samoilenko: Back with a Vengeance

Lena Samoilenko

Remember Lena Samoilenko? The Russian spiking sensation who absolutely dominated the PVL a few years back? Well, she's back, and she's taller, stronger, and even more determined.

Standing at a towering 6'4", Samoilenko is a force to be reckoned with. She's already racking up insane stats and leading the league in scoring. But it's not just about the numbers for her. She's here to win a championship for PLDT.

“I missed the team, and I’m hungry for a title,” Samoilenko said. “I want to bring that championship feeling from Kazakhstan to the Philippines.”

With her killer serve, explosive spikes, and relentless energy, Samoilenko is a nightmare for any opposing team.

Angge Alcantara: The Rising Star

Angge Alcantara

Meet Angge Alcantara, the young gun who's ready to make waves in the PVL. She's got big shoes to fill, stepping in for veteran playmaker Rhea Dimaculangan, but she's not afraid of the challenge.

“I’m living a dream right now,” Alcantara gushed. “Playing with my idols is surreal. I’m learning so much from Ate Rhea and Ate Kim Fajardo.”

Alcantara's got the talent and the drive to succeed. With her quick wit and impressive court vision, she's already proving to be a valuable asset to the team.

Can PLDT Finally Break Through?

With Samoilenko and Alcantara joining forces with PLDT's core of Mika Reyes and Jovielyn Prado, the High Speed Hitters are looking more formidable than ever. They've finished in the top five for three straight seasons, but now it's time to take the next step.

Can this dynamic duo lead PLDT to their first-ever PVL championship? We can't wait to find out!

Ahead of the league’s opening on February 20, all eyes are on the volleyball team supported by PLDT Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan, as it faces 11 other participants, kicking off the biggest Philippine volleyball action this 2024.

All once part of the national team, they came to prominence during their collegiate days with the De La Salle University Lady Spikers. They each carry three UAAP gold medals, among other silver finishes and individual awards.

Savannah Davison

After finishing as PVL’s top scorer in her rookie year in the last conference, Savannah Davison is seen as a credible threat on the court. She contributed 202 points through 173 attacks, 22 blocks, and seven service aces at the end of the eliminations.

MVPs meet the MVP

A few days before the new season kicked off, the PLDT High Speed Hitters dropped by the PLDT headquarters in Makati City for a courtesy visit with PLDT President/CEO, Manny Pangilinan.

“The goal is to have as many Filipino volleyball athletes as possible representing us in international events—and maybe even the Olympics. We will continue to work with partner leagues and organizations to help make this possible. Of course, the work begins with our team. They make us very proud, and we hope they continue to play their hearts out on the court,” Pangilinan said.

The team also had the chance to meet, interact, and play games with PLDT and Smart employees to promote the upcoming season.

McDonald’s Philippines celebrates World Bicycle Day with its second Tour De McDo

Thursday, June 15

Tour De McDo

McDonald’s Philippines President and CEO Kenneth S. Yang together with cycling participants at McDonald’s Quirino Mabini for its 2nd Tour de McDo last June 4.

After the success of its first Tour de McDo, McDonald’s Philippines hosts its second community bike ride in celebration of World Bicycle Day. The latest ride brought together several cycling communities and personalities simultaneously in three key areas across the country – Pampanga, Intramuros, and Tagaytay.

Tour de McDo is a multiple-stage bike challenge introduced under McDonald’s Green and Good campaign – the QSR giant’s initiative to do better for the environment by implementing sustainable and alternative solutions in their restaurants and operations. Through Tour de McDo, McDonald’s encourages its customers to explore a healthier lifestyle for themselves and for the environment, while also highlighting various scenic cycling routes that pass through McDonald’s stores equipped with bike-friendly features.

Earlier this year, Tour de McDo’s first round highlighted McDonald’s fifth flagship Green and Good store–the McDonald’s Nuvali, Sta. Rosa branch. McDonald’s Nuvali, the QSR giant’s 700th store nationwide, boasts its bike-friendly features, utility-efficient solutions, and green building solutions. Aside from its sustainable restaurant innovations, the strategic location of the store makes it an ideal stop for the strong cycling community in Nuvali.

Celebrating World Bicycle Day with its second Tour de McDo

Following its success and strong demand from cycling communities, the sophomore ride now features three new scenic routes to cater to the different levels of cycling: Manila, Intramuros for the beginner route (20KM), Clark, Pampanga for the intermediate route (34KM), and Tagaytay for the advanced route (48KM).

Almost 100 participants joined the event and received Tour de McDo kits, which include an exclusive Tour de McDo Dri Fit shirt, Tour de McDo limited-edition stickers, and a McDonald’s breakfast meal, all for free.

“For a long time, our McDonald’s stores have played an integral role in many bike rides as a stopover or pit stop. This gave us an opportunity to find more ways to bring together the interests of our customers and care for the planet, under our Green and Good campaign. By promoting sustainable active mobility through Tour de McDo, we hope to encourage more people to get on a bike, so we can collectively do our part in lessening CO2 emissions,” shared McDonald’s Philippines President and CEO Kenneth S. Yang.

McDonald’s stores featured in the various routes were: McDonald’s Quirino Mabini, McDonald’s Clark CM Recto Pampanga, McDonald’s Porac Pampanga, McDonald’s Nuvali, Sta. Rosa, and McDonald’s Delos Reyes, Tagaytay all offer bike-friendly features such as a Bike & Dine facility, so that cyclists can dine in with the safety of their bikes. The stores also opened dedicated Bike Repair Stations that offer free use of tools for any basic repairs.

Extending the celebration of World Bicycle Day all throughout the month, McDonald’s Philippines introduces its Cyclists Meal, a special McDonald’s App offer available for all weekends of June 2023. Cyclists who go on weekend rides can pass by any McDonald’s store and present the Cyclists Meal voucher on the McDonald’s app to get a Cheesy Eggdesal with Sausage and a Medium McCafe Iced Coffee Original for only 99 pesos.

The World Finals of Red Bull Half Court 2023 will go down in Serbia in September, and following both teams’ win at the National Finals, Triple TNT Giga and Uratex Dream are motivated more than ever to secure the championship in their respective division.

Red Bull and Raph Trinidad Bring Wake Paradise to Life on the Scenic Island of Palawan

Monday, May 29

Raph Trinidad Red Bull

Filipino wakeboarding prodigy and Red Bull athlete Raph Trinidad showcased his arsenal of skills on some of the most breathtaking islands of Palawan during Wake Paradise. The latest project by Red Bull aims to promote the sport in the country and shed light on Trinidad’s rapid rise to the top of the wakeboarding world.

Hailing from Liloan island in Cebu, Raph Trinidad started his wakeboarding journey at the ripe young age of 14. With such an early starting point to get his foot in the sport, Trinidad quickly acquired the necessary skills to compete at such a high level and establish himself as a household name in the wakeboarding scene.

In his past international competitions, Trinidad bagged silver in the 2019 World Cable Wakeboard Championship Men’s Open in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the 2022 IWWF World Championship in Pathum Thani, Thailand. Trinidad’s amazing feats during this run cemented him as the current number two wakeboarder in the world.

“Wakeboarding in Palawan really gave me the opportunity to enjoy what I love doing most and embrace the beautiful scenery of the islands around the Philippines. Having the opportunity to wakeboard in such a beautiful destination was a surreal experience and I’m pretty sure that all my fellow wakeboarders will love to ride in a place I’d love to call Wake Paradise,” said Trinidad.

Trinidad left spectators in awe with his wide range of wakeboarding stunts infused with a twist. Straying away from the conventional method of being pulled by ropes connected to systems and winches, Trinidad pushed the limits of his skills in the open seas of Palawan. Propelled forward by the speed and engine power of a bangkarera, Wake Paradise redefined the boundaries of the realm of wakeboarding while showcasing Trinidad’s passion and love for the sport.

The success of Wake Paradise showed Red Bull’s dedication to giving wings and empowering athletes to break barriers and aim to inspire them to pursue their dreams. In the process, Trinidad also solidified his position as a sports icon, setting the bar immeasurably higher for the next generation of wakeboarders and water sports enthusiasts nationwide.

PLDT Group, Football for Humanity team up to promote safe spaces for children to play, through sports

Monday, January 2

As part of its advocacy to create safe spaces for children both online and offline, PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) through the ‘Better Today’ program, have partnered with Football for Humanity (FFH) to empower youth through sports.

Together with MVP Sports Foundation, Smart Sports, FFH, and JCI Manila, ‘Better Today for Kids Playground’ is the culmination of PLDT and Smart’s month-long initiative on mental health in time for the recent World Mental Health Awareness month.

“We believe that sports can become an enabler for strong mental resilience and well-being, which is fundamental to our much broader digital wellness advocacy. This drives us to collaborate with like-minded individuals and organizations such as FFH, to generate collective impact and promote a culture of empathy among our communities,” said Stephanie V. Orlino, AVP and Head of Stakeholder Management at PLDT and Smart.

Over fifty (50) children aged seven and above joined a morning of games and football drills with FFH coaches and Azkals Development Team Captain Stephan Shrock at the Ateneo de Manila University football field.

“It’s great, we need more of these events, more awareness, more supporters, more people that promote and organize [football]. I can speak from my own experience; football was my safe space. Whenever I got to play on the green carpet, I felt safe, I felt happy,” shared Shrock.

For FFH vice president and co-founder Belle Tiongco, sports play a vital role in shaping the future of children. “Happy children make happy adults. And happy adults make a country progressive and powerful,” she said.

“Play is a child’s right. Play can transform. Sports command discipline, it commands concentration, and the best thing about sports is that you live in the moment. And Better Today for Kids Playground is totally in sync with what we do: providing safe spaces, giving the children resources, supporting them when they play. It’s a great experience that the children will not forget,” Tiongco added.

Sports for mental health

In line with the advocacy, PLDT and Smart were also invited to speak in a panel organized by the Football for Humanity and Virtual Soccer Schools to speak about the ‘Power Move Project’ and how it could serve as an example for international youth organizations in the United Kingdom.

“We tapped Filipino athletes and even executives in our organization to support the #BetterToday advocacy. PLDT and Smart have always believed that sports can teach our youth important values that enable them to become good citizens of this country,” said Jude H. Turcuato, Head of Sports at PLDT and Smart.

These initiatives emphasize the commitment of PLDT and Smart to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG #3: Good Health and Well-Being. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/BetterTodayPH.

EJ Obiena: ‘Before being the best athlete, I need to be a better person’

Sunday, November 27

27-year-old Filipino Olympic pole vaulter EJ Obiena shares his story of strength and resilience on the road to become Asia's best -- from overcoming stigma in the sport, to balancing his heart and mind as he dreams of bringing the Philippines glory in the sport that he loves.

In the middle of back-to-back schedules during his short break in the Philippines before returning to Italy for another round of intense training, Filipino Olympian EJ Obiena sat down for the last episode of #BetterToday conversations in this year’s Power Move Project, an initiative of PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) to promote mental resilience through sports.

“To maintain a strong mental headspace, I think it’s a matter of knowing how hard I’ve worked and that I’ve done everything in my capacity going to that day – all the training that I did throughout the year, all those days that I threw up on the side of the track. I deserve to be there, I deserve to compete with the best, and to be one of the best in the sport,” the Olympian shared.

His conviction and commitment to the sport have been validated multiple times, with his record-breaking performances in his latest tournaments, beating other veteran pole vaulters.

“There are a lot of challenges in the sport. Being Asian is one thing, because Asians are not known to excel in pole vault. These kinds of stigma did affect me, but I learned to embrace that challenge. I make sure that I win the competition and prove that stereotype is not true,” Obiena shared.

Obiena started in the sport through his father, who brought him to Rizal Memorial Stadium when he was just a kid. Now, with years of experience under his belt, the pole vaulter also said that his approach to the game is simply winning.

“The best EJ as an athlete is going to be the best person that he is. Therefore, before becoming the best athlete, I need to be a better person,” he said. “From getting knocked down to getting back up to knowing the best approach and mindset -- there are a lot of things I can improve on.”

As the number 3 pole vaulter in the world, Obiena shared that his biggest dream is to hopefully bring the country glory, especially in the upcoming Paris Olympics in 2024. The young pole vaulter also told the youth to find something that they truly enjoy, but to also endure the hardship that they are bound to face. “Achieving something historic would not come overnight. You need time and a lot of effort. There’s going to be a lot of pain, but stay with it. Focus and keep striving. Next thing you know, you’re closer to your goal than you ever were today.”

Watch EJ Obiena’s episode on #BetterToday Conversations here. The #BetterToday Power Move Project is part of the PLDT group’s broader program to help ensure the digital wellness of Filipinos particularly the youth.

Negrenses in Sports

Friday, July 8

This month, Negros Season of Culture celebrates sports.

Negrense Julie Uychiat is an international-class marathon runner. This year she will take on the World Marathon Challenge 2022 – seven marathons on seven continents in seven days. And yet, just seven years ago, Julie hated running. And only because up until 2015 she’s had no running background. Self-imposed fear of failure went out the window when her sister urged her to give running a chance, saying, “It won’t kill you”.

And we all know what happens when something doesn’t kill you. Stronger, Julie has since done almost all of the major world marathons – Berlin, Chicago, Boston, New York, London, and soon, Tokyo. And in October this year, at the World Marathon Challenge, she will be running to raise awareness and funds for the children of Kalipay Negrense Foundation.

Synchronized swimming, now renamed artistic swimming because solo and duet events have been added to the traditional group performance, has attracted Negrense Giella Sanchez. She is a mover of the Garcia-Sanchez Swim School in Bacolod, the same Garcia-Sanchez family that has excelled for years in dance and performing arts. From these disciplines, Giella summons a balance of grace and skill.

Focused on this goal, the Garcia-Sanchez Swim School has formed an artistic swim team with Giella as coach. She performs duet with her niece Carmina. Meanwhile, Carmina also represents the team in artistic swimming solo category. The Garcia-Sanchez Artistic Swimming Team has competed for the Philippines, reflecting the Negrense desire to step up the plate and live up to the challenge.

MTB DH is Mountain Bike Downhill. The Jumpong Hill Downhill Bike Challenge recently held in Don Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental, was the first live event that Negros Season of Culture covered. We followed one of the racers, Lek Brodeth, the leader of the Cyclopaedia Race Team. Lek’s journey to biking was totally unplanned but strewn with obstacles that came in quick succession, pushing the detours he made. But a knee injury and the pandemic lockdown had plans for Lek other than retirement. The lure of MTB DH adrenaline rush was just too much to resist. The Negrense’s passion for adventure does not fade. It may rest to heal, it may even morph, but for sure it will rise again.

Butuan-native Riemon Lapaza topped PH leg of 2022 UCI Gravel World Series

Wednesday, April 6

With some of the most inspired riding and trying tracks in a race this year, the 2022 UCI Gravel World Series Philippines is in the books, literally in the history books, as being the starting point of the first-ever race series of its kind under the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).

The multi-nation, multiple-leg race series kicked off last April 3, 2022 in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija, a picturesque municipality that has become a favorite destination within the global biking community for the past few years.

After enduring the dirt road with a flat tire near the finish line, Butuan native Riemon Lapaza emerged as the top placer of the Philippine leg in all categories, clocking in 3:06:46.7. The champion of the men’s 35-39 years old category was trailed behind by Norway’s Rick Nobel, who placed first in the men’s 19-34 category.

Mellisa Jane Jaroda topped the women’s 19-34 category, and ranked first among female racers with 3:39:00.639.

Close to 400 riders were in attendance, all vying for the chance to finish the 85-km race. Each qualifier was awarded with a finisher medal, and 25% of each rider category earned a UCI qualifying medal and automatically made it to the UCI World Championships.

Participants from the Philippines and the rest of the world powered through all the ascents, river crossings, water features, and everything else that Bongabon’s legendary terrain put in front of them. As Vic Narciso, one of the riders, described the journey as he crosses the finish line, “it was the most challenging and violent race I’ve ever done, but I can’t stop smiling.”

Ann Aleonar, who has been racing since 2010, shared that she was overwhelmed with gratitude. “I took a 5-year break from racing, and anyone who’s raced knows that it isn’t easy to come back – especially up to racing level,” Aleonar said. “And then the pandemic happened, it really wasn’t easy. When I actually finished and qualified, the first feeling I felt was gratefulness.”

The Philippine leg attracted competitors from Europe and Asia, who not only found victory here in the country, but a biking scene that welcomed them with open arms. Tokyo’s Junro Nagashima of cycling team Roppongi Express, said that he was not surprised at how friendly the Filipino riders were, but that he was surprised at how comfortable they all made him and his teammate feel. Rick Nobel from the Netherlands, who placed first in the 19-34 Male category, was also seen smiling from ear-to-ear, in the midst of his newfound friends within the local riding community. Jared Hui, a rider from Singapore, wrote a long testimony on Facebook about how local MTB legend Bans Mendoza lent him his personal bike after he realized that his own two-wheeler wasn’t the right setup for the race.

Bongabon Mayor Allan Gamilla also made an appearance and expressed gratitude to the organizers for tapping Bongabon, Nueva Ecija as the first and only Asian leg in the 2022 UCI Gravel World Series. “This is a big boost for Bongabon as a destination for sports tourism. We hope to make use of the municipality’s potential to help promote the country, and further establish it as major global hub for gravel riding.”

These were just a few of the stories of how an amazing sporting event brings all kinds of people together, with everyone leaving the venue with full hearts already asking about the next race. Clearly, in more ways than one, UGWSPH made its mark.

Philippines only Asian country to qualify at the 2022 Trek UCI Gravel World Series

Thursday, February 17

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is set to hold its inaugural sanctioned gravel world championships series, with the first event to take place in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija in the Philippines on April 03, 2022.

The Trek UCI Gravel World Series will serve as its alternative off-road version for the premier UCI Gran Fondo World Series and World Championships, and the winners will be awarded with the coveted UCI rainbow jersey.

The Switzerland-based governing body for sports cycling, which also oversees international competitive cycling events, announced in a press release in September last year that it will “organize—in collaboration with events organizer Golazo [Sports]—a UCI Gravel World Series consisting of events enabling athletes to qualify for the Trek UCI Gravel World Championships.”

With more than 15 events serving as qualifiers, the races are anticipated to be “mass participation events,” as Gravel continues to be a booming discipline around the world, combining elements of road and mountain bike, and takes place mainly on unsealed roads such as gravel, forest tracks, farm roads, and cobbles.

On the Trek UCI Gravel World Series’ first iteration’s criteria for participation, Erwin Vervecken, the off-road and gravel manager for Belgium-based sports marketing agency Golazo Sports, told American cycling magazineVeloNews that whereas the Gran Fondo focuses on masters and cyclotourists, the Trek UCI Gravel World Series is more geared towards non-professionals. “In gravel, elite riders of the top level, riders from the WorldTour, from UCI teams, can participate, can qualify and do world championships. We expect the top riders.”

In order to qualify for the 2022 Trek UCI Gravel World Series, participants must finish in the top 25% group per gender and age group, with each age group ranging five years between 19 and 79. Riders with no license, holds amateur and masters license, cycling for all license, and elite license. The equipment and course regulations of Gran Fondo will apply to Gravel World.

While the final list of locations are yet to be revealed, races will be held in select event venues in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia.

The Trek UCI Gravel World Series Philippines event will include an 85km (qualifier distance for 19 to 49) and 62km course (qualifier distance for 50 and above)—the majority of the race is flat and fast. Starting in Vega Grande, located north of Bongabon, the 85km course is a mix of flat gravel roads along the river, forest roads, and dirt roads. The shorter, 62km course includes a shortcut to the same finishing point of the 85km course.

The first race of the Trek UCI Gravel World Series will coincide with Bongabon’s festive season, which includes the Sibuyas Festival, held every 10th of April. The celebration is a form of thanksgiving for a bountiful onion harvest. Perfect in the summer, tourists can also enjoy the Falls Deepsap waterfall at Barangay Labi and a visit to Mount Labi Peak.

Bongabon Mayor Allan Xystus A. Gamilla is honored that the municipality will be part of the upcoming UPCI Gravel Series in the Philippines. “Bongabon, being an emerging destination for cycling tourism and outdoor recreation, offers breathtaking sceneries with the most wonderful views of the Philippines’ untapped countryside. It’s also a great place with exciting backroads, trails, and routes that every adventure seeker would be thrilled to experience. Perfect in the summer, tourists can also enjoy the refreshing rivers and the cool weather at Mount Labi. It is also the home of the Bongabon Bike Park in Ariendo, an Enduro and Downhill MTB destination for the gravity riders.”

As the first Trek UCI Gravel World Series inch closer, organizers hope that its inclusiveness and scale will inspire “any rider who wants a shot at the rainbow stripes.”

The 2022 Trek UCI Gravel World Series – Bongabon Philippines is supported by brands and institutions who push the sport forward for the cycling community: Black Mamba, 8A Apparel, Genesis Eyewear, iGsport, Milo and Yakult.

Bank of China and SM link up to celebrate sport and promote recovery in 2022

Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics

With the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics happening this month, Bank of China and SM Supermalls have partnered to celebrate and support the Philippines lone entry in the winter games, Alpine skier Asa Bisquera Miller. He will be competing in the men’s slalom and the giant slalom.

With support from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), the Philippine Skating Union (PHSU), the Philippine Olympic Committee, and the Chinese Embassy, Bank of China Manila and SM recently showcased some of the country’s best ice skaters in the newly iced SM Mall of Asia Ice Skating Rink. Entitled “Together on Ice,” the campaign seeks to bring more visibility towards winter and ice sports, a rarity in a tropical country like the Philippines.

According to PSC Commissioner Celia Kiram, these initiatives are especially important in today’s current context. “Despite the limitations of the pandemic, we need to continue and support our Filipino athletes, as well as promote the moral values that come with sports. Because sports promotes community–something that has been missing for a lot of people during this difficult time.”

“We’re thankful for organizations and activities that actively promote winter and ice sports in the Philippines, especially since we have no winter,” said Jim Palomar Apelar, President of the Philippine Ski and Snowboard Federation. “This is an important step towards attracting more Filipino athletes to the fold.”

Together on Ice

In the rare ice performance at the SM Mall of Asia skating rink, young, up-and-coming skaters showed just how much local talent we have in a sport that does not come natural to our region. Performers included members of the Philippine National Developmental Pool, namely Skye Frances Patenia, Hayden Balucating, and Skye Chua. All home-grown talents, and all multi medalists both locally and internationally.

“Despite not having a winter season, we have several extremely talented winter and ice athletes,” said Nikki Cheng, President of the Philippine Skating Union. “Through this initiative, we hope to make ice experiences more accessible and show Filipinos the beauty and viability of winter sports.”

A partnership for community and recovery

The idea behind Bank of China and SM’s partnership borrow heavily from the official slogan of the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, which is "Together for a Shared Future.” The slogan reflects a commitment to overcome global challenges as a community with a shared future for mankind. It also demonstrates unity and a collective effort, embodying the core values and vision of the Olympic Movement and the goal of pursuing world unity, peace and progress.

“It is this spirit of collaboration and togetherness that will be central to economic recovery in 2022,” said Deng Jun, Country Head of Bank of China Manila. “As a global banking group, it is also a philosophy that Bank of China advocates. That’s also why we wanted to work with SM to promote the Winter Olympics, an event where thousands of people from many different nations come together to celebrate their shared humanity.”

The idea of promoting community through sport takes on even greater meaning given the ongoing pandemic, when social activities have been put on hold, and people lack venues for community.

“At SM, our mission is to give Filipinos a venue for meaningful moments,” said Steven Tan, President of SM Supermalls. “After almost two years of social distancing, Filipinos are eager for a sense of normalcy and community. The re-opening of our ice rink is certainly a step towards us being able to provide Filipinos that venue.”

The groupings were finalized during Saturday’s Media Conference launching PBA 3X3 to Philippine media.

The 3X3 basketball game reflects the roots of basketball as the familiar “tatluhan” kids, particularly young Filipinos, grew up playing so expect the PBA 3X3 to exhibit the skills of the players as it puts premium on short but very intense playing minutes. More or less played for about 15 minutes, the PBA 3X3 is perfect for mobile phone viewing.

Saturday, September 4

AROO! The long wait is over. Spartan Race Philippines is back with four events lined up for 2021. Spartan started in the Philippines in 2017 with the inaugural Spartan Sprint in Timberland, Rizal. This year, Spartan Philippines partnered with Batangas Lakelands to deliver an out of the ordinary race course by building a semi-permanent structure at the facility to cater to racing in the new normal.

Aside from this we will also be launching new races for 2022 in the Philippines:

  • DEKA™, the decathlon of functional fitness designed for all levels. This event emphasize training with a purpose, exercise gamification, and plenty of opportunities to celebrate personal fitness, combining ten functional training zones each proceeded by 500 meters of running (5k total).

The Spartan Ambassador Program

Spartan ambassadors are athletes who inspire others to get off their couches and race. Beyond that they are representative of the ideals and attitude of a Spartan, not only are they successful in sports and fitness but they also embody the Spartan spirit of community, commitment, and never giving up. Over the years Spartan Race Philippines has been fortunate to have a strong and solid roster of ambassadors and this year is no different. The Spartan Ambassadors are Steve Near, Lharbs Policarpio, JP Yap, Kaizen dela Serna, Brigitte Lim, Kitch Gamilla, Lairca Nicdao, Aga Casidsid, Rkin Casanada, and Nicolette Muralla-Celis.

Spartan Pro Team

The Spartan Pro Team was made to showcase that there are serious athletes who travel to compete all over the world nearly every weekend, chasing not just fire jumps but podium finishes as well. It furthers the dream to see “OCR in the Olympics” in the coming years. In fact, with the collaboration Spartan Philippines has with Pilipinas Obstacle Sports Federation through its president Atty. Al Agra, the pro team will be able to represent the country both for the Spartan Trifecta World Championships in Greece and the Spartan World Championship in Abu Dhabi this year.

Spartan Race Philippines in the Now Normal

While people anxiously await the steady return of competitive racing amid the pandemic, its role and meaning continues to change during these trying times and moving forward. Racing is more than just an entertainment. It is more than just an escape from reality. Spartan Race, like most other races, is a platform for change. A platform to further the conversation. A platform to help, inspire, educate, and guide. With the help of the new roster of Ambassadors and Pro Team, Spartan Race Philippines would like to be ready to open races in the Now Normal. The mentality to wait and expect things to go back to as it was before is over.
