How To Start A Blog

Wednesday, November 1

Bloggers blog for different reasons. I started blogging in 2003 because I want to have a creative outlet. I was an accountant back then and I felt like I've been dealing with too much numbers. There are so many thoughts bottled up inside my mind. I created an account with Tabulas, a free journal hosting website. Most of my articles were personal stuff.

You probably want to blog because you see your blogger friends sharing photos from events they attended and the products they receive from brands. I hate to burst your bubble but blogging is not all about parties and freebies. When I decided to take blogging seriously in 2013, I was never invited nor received any products from brands. I am a nobody. I would only get 5-10 visitors in my blog a day.

So you really want to be a blogger? Here are some things you need to know.

Plan ahead

Determine your niche.

  • What do you want to write about?
  • Who are your target readers?
My blog articles were all about food and travel during the first few months. These are expensive niches especially for a newbie because no one will sponsor you yet. There are also thousands of established travel and food bloggers already. How will you make your blog standout? Do you have something new to offer the readers? My Snapped and Scribbled has eventually evolved into a lifestyle blog.

I created a new blog last April, Forty and Beyond. I turned 40 and thought of writing articles for people like me who are in their 40s and are much more conscious about their beauty, health, fitness and wellness. I'm no health buff but I try my best to have a healthy lifestyle.

Determine your branding.

  • What is the name of your blog?
  • What is the design of your logo?
  • What is the color scheme of your website?
  • What font will you use?
  • Tagline? Hashtag?

Choose a web host

You don't need to spend yet on web hosting. WordPress, Blogger, and WIX are some of the sites offering free hosting. I've been using Blogger. I tried WordPress but I just can't figure it out. I am more comfortable with Blogger.

These web hosts also offer free templates. You can also customize the templates or use a different templates.

Buy a domain

The free web host will provide you with a free domain (.blogspot.com; .wordpress.com) but if you want a more professional blog, I suggest you buy a domain. You don't want to waste money so make sure you have already decided on your blog's name. I buy my domains at GoDaddy. Your only problem is if the domain name you want is already taken.

Create social media accounts

The best way to share your article is through your social media accounts. Make sure that they are easily identifiable with your blog.

My facebook page is www.facebook.com/snappedandscribbled, my instagram account is www.instagram.com/snappedandscribbled and my twitter account is www.twitter.com/snapscribbled

Start writing!

Whether you are a newbie or have been blogging for years, it is very important to have a list of the topics you want to write and have a regular schedule for your blog posts. Your readers should have something new to read every time they visit your blog.

My blog is now on it's 4th year and has reached 600k visitors. I don't rely too much on social media as source of traffic since I don't have thousands of followers yet. But I'm happy that I average 35k visitors every month.

If you have a blog or just started blogging after reading this, share your link on the comment. I'll visit and leave a comment too :)

Start Your Own Blog With These Niches

Wednesday, June 14

I started blogging in 2004. The articles were purely personal. I don't know if any of you have heard about Tabulas but it was through this platform that I realized I really love to write. When tabulas was no longer available, I searched for another platform and learned about blogspot. It was in 2013 that I decided to pursue what I love. Snapped and Scribbled was born and here I am 470,000 visitors and counting.

I totally turned my back from the corporate and followed my mantra " let what you love be what you do". Many friends have been asking me how to be a blogger. They thought it's all about attending events, travels, food, freebies, and perks. They thought it's an easy way to earn money. I say blogging is all about passion. Money will eventually come.

If you want to be a blogger, it is very important that you find a niche you are really interested to write about. Remember that you need to build an audience if you want to earn from blogging. Here are some of the niches that have great following you might be interested.

Food

Starting a food blog is very expensive and diet should not be in your vocabulary. You will not earn right away from a food blog. You will actually spend a lot as a newbie. Photography skills are also very important. You must be able to entice your readers through your food photos. Have you seen my FOODIECHEATDAY Instagram? I curated the photos of all the food served on my restaurant reviews and foodie meet up invites in my food niche instagram.

TIP: It is also an advantage if you have an account with ZOMATO. If you share great, honest reviews on their site, you'll have a chance of getting invited to foodie meet ups exclusive to members.

One of my popular food articles is the Heat Stroke Grill in Marikina. Check out the photos and the write up!

Travel

Whether you are a budget traveler, a backpacker, or a money-is-not-an-issue type of traveler, there are people who are interested to read about the places you've been to. Make sure that you offer them information that they won't find in other travel bloggers' articles.

My Universal Studios Singapore offers tips on how to make the most of your Day Pass and this has been read 14,425 times.

How To

People search the internet for DIY projects and crafts. If you are good in creating awesome stuff, you can use your blog not just to share How To instructions but you can also use it to set up your online store and sell materials for projects or find customers who are interested with your product.

Fashion

Do you love sharing your #OOTD on your social media accounts? A fashion blog is perfect for you. And if brands start noticing you, you'll get  invites to exclusive fashion events, shopping spree, and sponsorship!

Health and Fitness

I recently started a new blog that is all about health and fitness. People nowadays are more health conscious and are looking for ways to keep fit. I got really serious with health and fitness when I turned forty last year and what started out as a #FitAtForty hashtag on my instagram eventually made me create www.fortybeyond.com. It's all about health, fitness, and wellness for people who are forty and beyond. But it's also a great read for those who wants to start taking care of their health early in life.

These are some of the popular niches. You can also find blogs about technology and gadgets, anime, entertainment, photography, kdrama, and even horticulture. You must decide first which one you would like to focus on.

Are you ready to start your own blog?

Blog Domain Authority Checker

Sunday, April 3

How well does your website rank on search engines?

I encountered a brand looking for bloggers with a domain authority score of 40 and higher to collaborate with them. I have no idea what domain authority is all about and so I consulted my ever reliable friend -- google.

Domain Authority is a score (on a 100-point scale) developed by Moz that predicts how well a website will rank on search engines. Use Domain Authority when comparing one site to another or tracking the “strength” of your website over time. (source: https://moz.com/learn/seo/domain-authority)

I have almost 240,000 website visitors and I really got curious of my domain authority score. I'm still learning about search engine optimization and how to improve my blog's SEO. I entered my domain url and here's the result:

I found out that I'm way below the required domain authority. And then there's another term to google -- page authority. So what's page authority?

Page Authority is a score (on a 100-point scale) developed by Moz that predicts how well a specific page will rank on search engines. It is based off data from the Mozscape web index and includes link counts, MozRank, MozTrust, and dozens of other factors. It uses a machine learning model to predictively find an algorithm that best correlates with rankings across the thousands of search results that we predict against. (source: https://moz.com/learn/seo/page-authority)

Page Authority vs. Domain Authority

Page Authority measures the predictive ranking strength of a single page while Domain Authority measures the strength of entire domains or subdomains.

Want to know your score? Click the link below. Share your score on my comment section. I would love to know your score.
