SM Skating MOA Hosts Ice Hockey Challenge Cup of Asia


The 2018 Challenge Cup of Asia is happening on April 3-8, 2018 at the SM Skating Mall of Asia in Pasay City. This is the first time that the Philippines  will sponsor the annual international ice hockey tournament that is sanctioned by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). 

“We are very proud and excited to host, for the first time, the IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia which has been held in different countries since it was founded in 2008,” said Chris Sy, Federation of Ice Hockey Philippines president.

The 2018 Challenge Cup also marks the first time that the Philippines will compete in the men’s top division of the annual tournament among some of the best ice hockey teams in the region.

Riding on the momentum of its gold medal victory in the first-ever ice hockey event of the 2017 Southeast Asian Games, the Philippine Ice Hockey Team, backed by the SM Group, hopes to make a podium finish in the 5-nation Challenge Cup of Asia as it plays against Thailand on April 3, Kuwait on April 5, Mongolia on April 6, and Singapore on April 8. All games of the Philippine team are scheduled at 7PM.

Other Challenge Cup of Asia games will feature Singapore vs Mongolia on April 3 (3:30PM), Mongolia vs Kuwait on April 4 (7PM), Thailand vs Singapore on April 5 (3:3PM), Mongolia vs Thailand on April 7 (3:30PM), Kuwait vs Singapore on April 7 (7PM), and Kuwait vs Thailand on Aril 8 (3:30PM).

During the Challenge Cup, the Olympic-size ice skating rink at the SM Skating Mall of Asia will be the battleground of the competing ice hockey teams. It is equipped with complete facilities such as a digital scoreboard, players’ boxes, scorekeeper and penalty boxes, locker rooms, and a 200-seater stands located around the rink.

“We are honored to be a part of this wonderful opportunity to host the first official IIHF event in the country. This shows how the Philippines can truly be at par with its Asian neighbors not only in terms of the quality of its sports programs and athletes, but also in the quality of its sports facilities,” said Herman Medina-Cue, COO of SM Lifestyle Entertainment, Inc., the only company in the Philippines to carry Olympic size ice rinks.

Jollibee Opens First Branch in Europe


How long are you willing to wait in line just to have a bite of Jollibee Chickenjoy?

The country’s largest fast-food chain has opened its first-ever European branch in Milan, Italy where an estimated 170,000 Filipinos live and our kababayan flocked at Piazza Diaz 7, Milan. The Jollibee branch is just a stone's throw from Duomo, Milan Cathedral.

In the early hours of its opening day, customers—families, young people, members of the Filipino community, and even locals—were already seen lining up in front of the Jollibee store just to have a taste of its world-famous Chickenjoy.


Among those who patiently waited for Jollibee’s doors to open was Tommy Flores Jr. who believed that the experience was all worth it. “Naghintay kami ng four hours sa labas pero sulit,” he shared in his Facebook post, while the Aquilon, Flores, and Mendoza families unanimously exclaimed, “Kahit mahaba ang pila, sobrang sulit ‘yung pagpunta namin! It tastes just like the Chickenjoy sa Pinas!”

The queue of eager and ecstatic customers outside of the outlet was so long that it poured out of the restaurant, and into the crowd on the street outside. 

"Getting a foothold in Milan is a fundamental step for Jollibee, as well as a launch pad for the expansion of the brand to the rest of Europe,” said Jollibee Foods Corporation Chief Executive Officer Ernesto Tanmantiong. 

"This newest venture sets off our journey that will lead to opening more stores around the continent - an ambitious goal, which we will achieve by consistently offering a unique dining experience with our delicious food and warm service that brings joy to all,” added Tanmantiong.

The opening of the Jollibee branch in Milan followed the signing of a joint venture between Jollibee Foods Corporation and Singapore Blackbird Holdings to export the fastfood chain to Europe.


"We want to bring Filipinos 'a taste of home', and at the same time share with Italians – who are famous for their gastronomic heritage – both the unique culinary experience that our crispy Chickenjoy offers and a series of common values: taste, conviviality, love of tradition and the joy of being together,” Tanmantiong said.

159 of the 164 Registry of Deeds Offices Now Online


Securing a Certified True Copy of your property title is easier and more convenient. 99 percent of the Registry of Deeds offices are now online. The Land Registration Authority launched its Anywhere-to-Anywhere (A2A) online program back in 2012. The online shift allows title holders the faculty of requesting for their Certified True Copy (CTC) titles by visiting the Registry of Deeds office nearest to them, filling up a form, and claiming it on the same branch after it has been processed.

For easier applications, the LRA has continually worked on expanding its online reach by establishing satellite offices all over the country. Out of the 164 registry offices scattered nationwide, 159 offices are already computerized and ready to provide A2A services.

The launch of A2A follows the heels of LRA’s Online Tracking System (LOTS) which lets title holders check the status of their transactions. The digital service, which can be accessed through the department’s website, sets the pace on the online expansion of LRA’s other services. In the pipeline are other digital projects like the LRA Aksyon Agad Center, e-Title service, Parcel Verification Service, Lot Location Service, Title Trace Back Service, and Geo-Spatial services. 

Currently, the LRA is focused on improving their A2A project by expanding their reach nationwide. The ultimate objective is to incapacitate every land owners and those property buyers for the first time to process easy and convenient registration transaction anywhere in the 7,107 islands in the Philippines.

The Circle Hostel Shares Coke Vision of a World Without Waste



We are at the point where the environment needs TLC. There are different reasons why organizations put up environment protection programs. For The Circle Hostel, the Philippines’ annual 1.88 million tons worth of plastic waste in the oceans was reason enough for its avid surfers and environmentalists to create their multi-award-winning program, The Plastic Solution.

“We were encountering plastic debris in the ocean, in our surf, and we wanted to do something about it, something that was not only low-tech but also community-driven,” shared Fiona Faulkner, The Circle Hostel environmental officer.

With this in mind, they started The Plastic Solution, an environmental movement which aims to raise awareness of the negative effects of plastic waste consumption and reduce plastics by promoting a zero-plastic lifestyle among community members and repurposing non-biodegradable materials through eco-bricking.

The foundation of the project is eco-bricking, the process of stuffing PET bottles with non-biodegradable waste such as shampoo sachets, plastic straws, snack wrappers, and other single-use plastics. The eco-bricks are then used as simple alternative fillers in constructing walls, fences, benches, low-cost community structures, and more.

The Circle Hostel project shares the vision of a World Without Waste of The Coca-Cola Company with the goal of collecting and recycling one bottle for each that it sells globally by 2030.

The Plastic Solution starts by teaching volunteer partners the basics of eco-bricking then they provide outlets for eco-bricks and accept eco-bricks from volunteers through their collection partners. The organization has successfully constructed different low-cost builds with eco-bricks, including outdoor showers, walls and perimeter fences for their hostels, and an eco-brick base used for a reforestation nursery, in partnership with the Aeta community of Yangil, Zambales.

The Circle Hostel is among the winners of the 15th Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (TAYO) Awards and is the recipient of the special Coke Barkada Award.

“The Coke Barkada is an award that we’ve been giving for the past 12 years to the group that best demonstrates the Coke Barkada spirit of collective volunteerism, working together for the community and living the value of positive action for change. The awardee for today is also fitting very well with our commitment as a company to a world without waste,” said Jonah De Lumen-Pernia, Coca-Cola Philippines Public Affairs and Communications director.

Aside from this environmental initiative, the Philippine business unit of The Coca-Cola Company also spearheads other advocacy programs such as the 5by20 Sari-sari Store Training and Access to Resources (STAR) Program, Minute Maid Nurisha supplemental program, and the Coca-Cola Agos Program.

Coca-Cola, along with the TAYO Awards Foundation, Inc. and its other partners, continue to recognize outstanding youth organizations which have made a positive impact on the country through innovative programs, returning with the 15th TAYO Awards.

Philippines International Furniture Show 2018


The longest running furniture show in the Philippines is showcasing over 200 of the country's best furniture designers and manufacturers on March 8-10, 2018 at SMX Convention Center Manila, SM Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay.
