Fat Fook: Authentic Taiwanese Food at The Globe Tower BGC

Tuesday, November 27

I was super excited when travelling to Taiwan was made easier for Filipinos. I was dreaming of strolling the streets in search for the "must-try" street foods and dishes. But the plan of having a food trip didn't push through and I said to myself I'll probably get lucky next year.

If there's a place in the metro I frequent the most, it's the Bonifacio Global City. It feels like BGC has everything I like and need. And it seems like the BGC universe has heard my heart's desire because Fat Fook, the fast growing Taiwanese restaurant chain, has opened a branch at The Globe Tower BGC.

IG worthy facade of Fat Fook at The Globe Tower 32nd Street
The Instagram-worthy facade of Fat Fook at The Globe Tower will make you wonder for a second if you are in Taiwan. The blue and white porcelain bowls and plates aesthetically provide privacy for the diners. The interior exudes a cozy and friendly vibe that makes dining an enjoyable experience.

Honestly, the only authentic Taiwanese dishes I know are stinky tofu which I am very curious to smell and taste and the Taiwanese sausage I have tasted in a buffet but I'm not convinced if I have eaten the real thing.

Authentic Taiwanese Dishes

You ask me, how authentic are the dishes served at Fat Fook? Well, this Taiwanese restaurant is conceptualize by executive chef Rachel Kao who was born in Taiwan. Fat Fook first served its authentic Taiwanese dishes in 2016. The Fat Fook at The Globe Tower is the 5th branch in the Philippines.

Fat Fook means big blessing or fat luck. I guess I was just been blessed because I was invited at the media launch and the experience was somewhat close to what I have imagined had my trip pushed through.

What's In the Menu

The recipes are passed on by Chef Rachel's parents and made even better for Fat Fook. While some of the dishes has been adjusted to suite the Filipino palate, it's the closest you can have from the Taiwanese version because the ingredients are sourced in Taiwan.

Appetizers

Fried Stinky Tofu, P228

The fried Stinky Tofu got me excited the most. They say you should never miss the chance of eating this when in Taiwan. Of course I would mind tasting this first in the Philippines. Chef Rachel made sure that you will be having exactly how it is served in Taiwan.

According to Chef Rachel, in order for you to fully enjoy the burst of flavor of the stinky tofu you must dip it and eat together with the pickled vegetable side dish.

Taiwanese Sausage, P328

The Taiwanese Sausage tasted way better than what I had before. This will definitely capture the taste buds of the Filipinos. It is sweet, tasty and juicy. These sausages are pan fried and garnished with fresh garlic slivers for more flavor.

Tofu with Century Egg and Pork Floss, P228
The Tofu with Century Egg and Pork Floss is perfect to whet your appetite. The silky texture of the tofu complements the pork floss and the marriage of flavors of the century egg and the sauce will make you look forward to the next dish.

Dimsum

Xia Long Bao has become famous recently in the Philippines and I've seen Chinese restaurants showcasing their versions.

It was my first time to try Xia Long Bao and what made it extra special was I got to sample the truffle variant. Xia Long Bao is a soup dumpling so you have to be extra careful when picking it up with the chopstick.

Pork Xiao Long Bao, 5pcs/8pcs P168/258

Fat Fook's bestseller is the Pork Xiao Long Bao. It is best served with black vinegar and ginger dip. With the truffle variant, I suggest you skip the dip and simply savor the truffle flavor.

New on the menu is the Spicy Wanton. It might be a bit too spicy for others but the trick is to consume this with Fat Fook's Milk Tea.

House Specialties

One of Fat Fook's signature dishes is the Chicken Chop. The breaded chicken fillet seasoned with salt and pepper is deep fried to perfection giving the dish a crunch with every bite without compromising the juiciness of the meat.

New on the menu is the Cheesy Chicken Chop and the Spicy Chicken Chop.

Other dishes to try

Fat Fook has an extensive menu. You must come prepared in order to sample every dish that catches your gastronomic fancy or come back some other day for more. Other dishes to try are String Beans with Minced Pork, Cua Pao, Beef Tendon Hotpot, Taiwanese-style Fried Noodles, Fried Intestine, and Black Pepper Beef.

Food To Go

Lunch time can get busy and the 40-seater Fat Fook restaurant is definitely full of hungry diners. Worry not because they have a take out counter for you to still satisfy your craving. This is perfect for me because I frequent BGC for staycation and take out food is my lifesaver.

The Chicken Chop, Taiwanese Sausage and Cua Pao are in the food to-go menu!

And yeah, you should not forget to pair your food with milk tea. I had the Taro Milk Tea with big tapioca pearls and original nata de coco. I wanna try the coffee jelly (my favorite sinker!) next time with either Roasted Hazelnut or the Dark Chocolate milk tea.

Fat Fook at The Globe Tower is open every day from 11am to 10pm. For more information, follow @FatFookManila on Facebook and Instagram.

I'm feeling a bit generous and would love to let you have a taste of the dishes I've tried at Fat Fook. Make sure you follow my food instagram @FoodieCheatDay for more food photos and my blog instagram @MsRoselleWrites and like my Facebook page @MsRoselleWrites.  I'll be posting the mechanics there soon on how you will get a chance to win P1,000 Fat Fook gift certificate.

2019 Belle de Jour Power Planner Review

Wednesday, October 24

Consider me old fashioned but I really prefer the traditional way of organizing my life. I tried this year using the calendar of my iPad to plot my events schedule and yet I always find myself checking my planner. I remember what I write with a pen rather than what I type.

I've been using the Belle de Jour Power Planner since 2014. It was my sister who gave me my first BDJ planner as a Christmas gift in 2013. At first, I was just excited with the discount coupons.  When I started getting serious with blogging in 2014 and attended events, I appreciated the planner more than the coupons.

If you haven't tried using the planner yet, here's a peek of the 2019 Belle de Jour Power Planner.

For 2019, I'll be using the Belle de Jour Limited Edition cover. My first planner had the classic cover while I had the succeeding planners personalized. I find this year's limited edition design elegant. But what I fell in love with is the butterfly. For me it symbolizes change and hope.

I'm positive that 2019 is a better year for me. Well, 2018 so far is good. But I know there's so much in store for me.

One of my favorite features of the Belle de Jour Planner is the Checklist. It got me through the tough times before when I felt like my life was dull. It challenged me, motivated me, made me get off the couch!

The 3 highlighted items on the 2019 checklist gave me goosebumps. During the weekend launch (this deserves a separate article) I attended the Vision Board Workshop with Trixie Esguerra and these three items are pasted on my board. Looks like the universe know what I really want to do!

Hey, I won't wait for 2019 to tick off the list. I have already started the moment I received the planner.

Notice something new on the monthly divider? Hmm, get your phone and download the Zappar app. See the logo on the lower right? Your planner will magically become interactive (coming soon!). There's a zapper logo also on the back cover. High-tech, huh!

I want to be more productive in 2019 (raket pa more!) and I look forward to filling up the blank spaces.

Getting busy means more moolah so the cash flow tracker comes handy.  It also means I'll be forgetful (I did forget to pay a few bills on due date this year)... bills tracker to the rescue!

Girls, is it just me or you also tend to forget when you had your period? This is important whether you are trying to get (or not) pregnant, planning a vacation or simply monitoring for health reasons.

And here's the #PerksOfABella booklet....

P40,000 worth of treats and discounts are included in the Perks of a Bella coupon booklet. I've used up the CBTL, Parisian, Ace Water Spa and Celeteque from previous years. Make sure you always bring the booklet anywhere you go.

Yey! You made it to this part of the article.

Win the BDJ 10th edition Navi Journal

Navi Journal showcases contents and illustrations of 12 widely celebrated festivals from different parts of the world on its monthly dividers. With special pages such as 101 Checklist, Bucket List, Must-see Destinations, Pre-trip Checklist and Packing List, Navi journal helps you visualize your travel goals and carefully map out your next adventure with ease.

Bound by an intricately-designed matte leather cover, the journal contains 176 full colored pages and horizontal weekly layout with notes page where you can list down your week’s highlights and wonders. What’s more, Navi also has an expandable back pocket that lets you store your travel essentials like tickets, cards, cash and postcards, among others. (source: https://shop.ilovebdj.com/collections/2019-collection-1/products/2019-navi-journal)

The TravelCurious booklet gives you access to P25,000 worth of discount coupons from partner brands.

Thank You To My Number One Fan

Monday, July 16

Mom,

On the 18th of this month will be your 8th death anniversary. I still regret not replying to the last text message you sent me. I guess I wasn't expecting it from you because we were never vocal with how we feel. I should have texted back, "I love you too" but I didn't. But I know you know how much I do.

Thank you for teaching me how to read and write even before I attended kindergarten. You were the best teacher and I am proud of having a mom who was very dedicated to her profession. You also taught me how to overcome my shyness. I can't recall how many school performances I joined. You and dad watching me with so much pride even though my role was just a flower, a tree, an extra. I can still remember how nervous you were during my first music recital at Max's Rustan's Cubao. I was very nervous too but when I glanced and saw you nod and smiled, I felt confident.

Thank you for molding me into a smart and independent woman. You prepared me for life's cruel surprises. Your own experiences when you were younger that you shared with me somehow help me when I am faced with difficult situations. I am strong because you showed me how it's like to be strong.

Thank you for trusting me. I had my first boyfriend at 15. I know that was way too young but you were so supportive. I am so blessed to have parents who are perfect role models when it comes to relationship. We both know dad was the "understanding one" and I've inherited your stubbornness. I guess we are both lucky to have married great men.

I still miss you. Every single day. I wish you could see what I've been busy with now. I know you will be amazed where my life altering decision to quit the corporate has brought me. I wish I could afford before to bring you to more places and buy you more stuff.

Mommy, remember whenever you brought home Goya chocolates from the factory near the school where you worked and I always said I wanted to be trapped inside the factory and eat as much chocolates as I can?

I had a Goya Chocolate Buffet last December and I wished I'll find you home when I brought three bags full of chocolates! Oh, you know how much I love dark chocolate!

Thank you mommy for instilling in me the values that made me who am I today. Thank you for raising me as a grateful person. Life may not be always sweet, but I know that even when life is bitter and I'm not at my best you will always be my number one fan.

Let's end this article on a sweet note, okay?!

How about a giveway?

Merries Tape Diaper: Because Your Baby's Smile Is Precious

Tuesday, September 19

I could never imagine how much happiness a baby can bring  until Choi arrived in our life. He is the first grandchild and my first nephew. Everybody in the family are clueless on how to take care of this little bundle of joy.  It would have been easier if mom is still alive.

When me and my sisters were still babies, tape diapers are not yet a thing. My mom has to diligently wash the cloth diapers and made sure to keep us dry and comfortable all the time. But I'm sure moms who raised babies in the 70s know that rashes and leakage were inevitable.

Moms these days are luckier. There are so many tape diapers available in the market. The question is: which is the best brand for your baby? Choi has tried different brands before his mom finally found the best for him.

Merries Tape Diaper, Japan's most bought baby diaper brand, is now in the Philippines and here are 7 reasons why you should choose Merries for your baby.

#1 It has long lasting dryness

Diaper rash is a common skin irritation among babies. It develops when moisture on the baby's skin and bacteria from urine and stool irritates the skin. Merries tape diaper has a triple layer air-through system that releases the heat and moisture inside the diaper. Its exceptional breathability gives the babies skin long lasting dryness.

#2 No leakage

Stay leak-free with Merries diaper not just from urine. It also has a soft poo leak guard to make babies comfy all the time and mommies worry-free.

#3 Super absorbency

Merries tape diaper quickly absorbs urine before the skin becomes wet thus making babies' skin stays dry and comfortable.

#4 Ultra soft and fluffy surface

Merries tape diaper has an ultra soft and fluffy surface that is gentle on baby's delicate skin

#5 Color-changing wetness indicator

Merries tape diaper has wetness indicator that helps moms know when to change the baby's diaper.

#6 Soft reusable magic seal

Merries tape diaper has a reusable magic seal that can be adjusted easily for that comfortable fit

#7 Cute designs

The cute Merries bunny design will not just look good on your baby but can also make mommies smile

6.2 - THE WRITER'S ZONE

Feng Shui For Writers Mentoring And Coaching
To understand what a writer's zone is, you must first experience the previous state called a writer's block. Then and only then will you understand how you can face it and how you can move to the writer's zone. This zone is exactly the opposite of a writer's block; it is the optimal phase in which a writer can find himself. It is the phase in which Chi flows freely on the writer's path, the creativity is boosted and the writing productivity reaches maximum level.
Having knowledge about both states, a writer's block and a writer's zone, you can save the wasted time between these two phases.
There are some elements that influence your entering into this zone.
  • One of these is your location. Depending on where you live, you must find a writing environment that boosts your writing mood. Find a place suitable for you that you feel relaxed in and totally prepared to let the words flow.
  • Take a walk in the park or the woods, go for a drive on a long unpopulated road. Don't forget to take the camera with you and take pictures that will help you relax the next time you need to enter into the writer's zone without having to walk again. A walk in a quiet and relaxing place is a good Feng Shui method to un-clutter your mind of stress.
  • Do some brainstorming for your future book; try to prepare a good plot for your novel. Do some research on the theme that you want to write about.
  • Avoid emails, other online temptations, phones and any other distractions that are blocking the Chi flow of your creativity and productivity.
  • Listen to some music and prepare a playlist with your favorite relaxing songs. Use this list until it becomes a habit that is helping you enter into the writer's zone.
  • Breathe! Yes, breathe. Fill your lungs with fresh air until they expand to the point where they touch, take a small pause then exhale slowly. Learn to breathe again, so the good Chi also enters your body.
  • Burn some incense and use aromatic lamps for fragrance.
  • Find a writing retreat in your area. Make it a part of your writing process. This will always get you into the zone. There are two kinds of retreats: solo retreats (suitable for writers who prefer solitude far away from any distractions including other writers) and group retreats (provides a chance for face to face group brainstorming). The best writing retreats are those that include both solo and group retreats. When you go to a writing retreat, be sure that you are applying the Feng Shui principles in that place also (you can even take a Bagua map with you).
  • If your mind feels unclear in ideas, use a yellow vase where you place orange flowers. This will boost the intensity of your writing and will give you the necessary clarity.
  • Don't forget to always include the water element in your space.
  • Avoid too many electronic devices in the moments when you write because they will drain your energy, and soon you'll have to face another writer's block.
  • Hang a wooden chime near you so its movement will activate any stagnant Chi.

She strongly believes that energy is ours to use freely, and we need only to open our hearts to regain the lost perception of our true powers. She thinks that when the student is ready, the teacher appears. For this reason, M.C. Simon has never hunted the information but rather waited for the right moment when she would be ready for the information to find her.
