Camp Braveheart: Allianz Supports Children Survivors of Heart Disease

Volunteers from Allianz Philippines held games promoting financial literacy among kids, who attended the recent 13th Camp Braveheart, a joint project of the  Philippine Heart Association and the Philippine Society of Pediatric Cardiology (PSPC)

Allianz Philippines, the Philippine Heart Association (PHA), and the Philippine Society of Pediatric Cardiology (PSPC) recently staged the 13th edition of Camp Braveheart at the Manila Ocean Park with the theme, “The Hero Within.”

Conceptualized in 2007, Camp Braveheart seeks to help post-surgical children with heart diseases to transition from a life of limited activity and exposure to one with vision, hope, and fruitful experience.

Dr. Maricel Regino, chairperson of the Council on Congenital Heart Disease, said that Camp Braveheart is a program that seeks to encourage children who were born with heart disease and underwent surgery to live a normal life like other kids.

“They serve as inspiration to others who want to live a good life after surgery,” she said during the opening of Camp Braveheart.

Dr. Regino was joined in the event by Dr. Aurelia G. Leus, vice president of the PHA; Dr. Ninfa J. Villanueva, president of the PSPC; and Gino Riola, senior vice president and head of Market Management Center of Excellence (MM COE) of Allianz Asia.

This is the second year that Allianz Philippines has partnered with the PHA, and Camp Braveheart is just one of projects that it is supporting.

Mr. Gino Riola, Senior Vice President, Head of Market Management Center of Excellence, Allianz  Asia

“We at Allianz believe in paying it back in the communities we operate in. Camp Braveheart is among the causes we are privileged to contribute to. It was personally a heartwarming experience for me to be surrounded by brave and happy children cared for by loving families and doctors. Their smiles and excitement were certainly contagious,” Riola said.

For this year’s celebration of the Heart Month, Allianz Philippines has been declared the PHA’s official life insurance partner.

“The PHA has advocacies that resonate with our corporate social responsibility aspirations in the Philippines. We are privileged to be their partner in promoting a healthy lifestyle among Filipinos,” Riola added.

Among the children who took part in Camp Braveheart were three-year-old Lilian Lucy Espiritu, who has been diagnosed with ventricular septal defect, and fellow three-year-old Piel Akron, who has been diagnosed with critical pulmonary stenosis.

“We are fortunate to have been invited to Camp Braveheart. I hope that they would continue activities like this for post-operation kids,” Lilian’s mom, Locelyn, said.

She added that they are already looking forward to next year’s Camp Braveheart.

Piel’s mom, MJ, is likewise thankful for the event as it introduced her to other parents with children that have been diagnosed with heart disease. They were encouraged to join Camp Braveheart by Piel’s doctor, Dr. Jose Jonas Del Rosario of the Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) and Philippine General Hospital (PGH).

“As parents, we have to learn how to let go for them to learn on their own. I wish that Piel would continue to get well so he won’t undergo anymore procedures,” MJ added.

Staying true to its theme this year, Camp Braveheart celebrated the children who, despite their young age, continue to show strength in the face of difficulties.

This year’s activities included an Oceanarium tour, Sea Lion Show, Shark & Ray Dry Encounter, Creepy Crawlies, games, and face painting, which the children all thoroughly enjoyed.

Allianz Philippines employees conducted a fun financial literacy lecture and games during the event.

Locelyn, MJ, and their fellow parents also had a fun time participating in the financial literacy exercise conducted by Allianz Philippines volunteer employees and learning about Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), too. They also attended a lecture on the 52100 Campaign, which encourages people to lead a healthy lifestyle by having five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, having only two hours of screen time, doing an hour of physical activity, avoiding sugary and sweetened beverages, and saying no to both smoking and secondhand smoking.

PAL Presents A Tale of Three Cities

Once upon a time, the foreign lands of the East stayed distant. Its mysteries remained unknown, the stories of enchanting kingdoms remained fantasies, and its inhabitants remained strangers. And only a few could fly to these… until now.

Over the years, Philippine Airlines has been making the world more connected through heartfelt air travel, making everything reachable. Now with more flights to Asia, it gave access to amazing lands, countless sceneries, and people like no other await. Three cities in particular are rich in cultures so distinct, you’ll be in awe over and over again.

Hanoi, the timeless charm.

At the heart of Vietnam lies its capital city, by the banks of the Red River, that blends both the land’s past colonial French influence and the booming of new-age Asia. Hanoi excites with its scrumptious cuisine, pulsating nightlife, and multi-cultural community.

The second biggest city in the country, Hanoi boasts a unique kind of heritage, where every sort of experience reaches your senses. It hosts a number of well-preserved temples and pagodas (tiered towers with multiple eaves) like the Tran Quoc Pagoda - an architectural masterpiece. If you’re looking for an out of this world marvel, you can walk to the center of two larger than life hands carved from stone.

If there’s one thing you’ll unravel in Hanoi, it’s the fresh and mouth-watering delicacies around the city. There’s the world-famous bowl of hot Pho or Vietnamese noodle soup. Or the Bun Cha or Vermicelli with Grilled Pork around town. You can also try a known local sandwich that’s influenced by French and Asian taste called Banh Mi. The baguette represents the European aspect of the sandwich, while the cold cuts, the vegetables, and the spice top off the taste of the East. Yum!

Get lost in the tree-lined boulevards and alleyways of Old Quarter where you’ll uncover all sorts of finds. As an emerging fashion district, you may want to dive deep into the “Paris of Vietnam.” Shop through Hanoi’s growing Weekend Markets and gush over the wide array of fashion items and even food stalls.

Phnom Penh, the glimmering destination.

Seeing the sights of Cambodia’s lavish capital puts you in a place of tranquility, filled with rich traditions you never knew existed.

The National Museum of Cambodia, home to the world’s finest collection of Khmer artistry, is a sight to behold. Every sculpture and bronze piece you see in the museum bring you up to date on the prosperous history of the nation. If you want to see the Khmer’s architectural brilliance, then a trip to the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda will leave you in wonder. The majestic details will make you appreciate the history and culture of Cambodia.

Phnom Penh is a cosmopolitan culinary scene with a plethora of delicious bites and savory food. Try the Lap Khmer (beef salad) for an equal experience of yummy meat and fresh greens. If you’re looking for an adventurous take on Khmer delicacies, then have a plate of Red Tree Ants with Beef. If you’re thinking of exploring the depths of Phnom Penh’s beverage culture, the emerging speakeasy bar culture can be experienced in the hidden alleys of the city.

Make your trip to Phnom Penh worth it by taking the time to visit other popular tourist spots. Take a tour of the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center and get up close and personal with the endangered animals. For an entertaining evening, catch the Cambodian Living Arts’ Theatre Show and go on a magical journey through Cambodian mythology and traditions.

New Delhi, the eternal city.

Invigorating and endlessly fascinating, you have reached the gateway to India’s Golden Triangle. One step into this growing metropolis and you can immediately get lost amidst the vibrant culture and folks leading you to an adventure of a lifetime.

From New Delhi, take a trip through the Golden Triangle, the tourist circuit connecting the capital to two other cities – Agra and Jaipur. Travel via coach and behold one of the world’s Seven Wonders, the magnificent Taj Mahal in Agra. Or see for yourself Jaipur’s exceptional architecture in the Hawa Mahal palace. Widen your reach and discover what India has to offer.

India’s love for festivals speaks for how unique and breathtaking their traditions are. At spring time, you can fall in love with the joyful and colorful festival of Holi. Take part in throwing colored water and powder, celebrating the moment of rejoicing and utmost enthusiasm. Come October, you can celebrate the most important holiday, Diwali, a festival celebrates the victory of good over evil. As a result, locals prepare mouthwatering banquets and commemorate the momentous feast with explosions of fireworks in the sky.

New Delhi boasts of cuisines so bountiful, you’d want to try them all. If you’re looking for a little heat, you’d love the Mughalai curry, a rich and creamy Indian classic. Its fragrant spices and unexpected add-ons such as cashews and raisins bring a surprising depth to the taste of this meal. For a little spoonful of something familiar, try the Masala Dosa. It looks like a regular pancake, but once it lands on your tastebuds, you won’t stop eating.

Dressing like a prince or a princess in a storybook location is easy when you’re in town. You can find a good blend of clothing, jewelry, handicrafts, and the like at the weekly village market of Dilli Haat. Bring out the inner Picasso in you and discover artworks, Indian artifacts, brassware, and more in the Janpath Market. New Delhi is literally sprawling with bustling bazaar streets, you can’t miss out.

Create your own stories filled with culture and adventure by visiting three enchanting cities with the airline that can make it happen. Philippine Airlines has opened its new routes to these locations, 4x weekly to Hanoi starting March 31, 2019, 5x weekly to Phnom Penh starting April 1, 2019, and 4x weekly to New Delhi starting April 16, 2019.

Even before reaching these majestic cities, start the tale of your vacation on a high note with Philippine Airlines’ comfortable seats, inflight meals, a next-level inflight entertainment system, and a signature heartfelt service like no other. If you’re even planning to take home souvenirs, you may do so with free baggage allowance of up to 25kg for Economy Class Passengers and up to 35kg for Business Class Passengers. First Museum of Philippine Economic History Opens in Iloilo

First Museum of Philippine Economic History

What was once the Ynchausti Commercial House in Calle Real in Iloilo, home of the company that started what will eventually become the world’s number one rhum, Tanduay is now the country’s first Museum of Philippine Economic History.

Before the National Historical Commission restored the building into an economic history museum, it was used as the provincial offices of the Commission on Audit. For the longest time, however, it was known as the Elizalde building.

In 1854, according to local historians, the building was home to a conglomerate Ynchausti y Compania (also Ynchausti y Cia), whose founders were the basques José Joaquin Ynchausti, Joaquin Elizalde and Valentin Teus. They consolidated their companies’ assets including Tanduay. When the Elizaldes bought the Ynchausti shares in 1934, they renamed the company to Elizalde Y Cia.

Other than historical data, the museum showcases many of the important artifacts of companies that thrived in Iloilo, especially during the golden days of the sugar industry. Aside from being one of the oldest companies established in the country, the Tanduay Distillery was featured in the museum because of its huge contribution to the sugarcane industry.

First Museum of Philippine Economic History

There's a display of an old Tanduay dama juana; early advertising print ads of Tanduay; tools from the haciendas of Western Visayas' sugar plantations; looms from the oldest weavers in Miagao, Iloilo; and t'nalak cloth from South Cotabato, among many others.

It is appropriate that these items are housed at the Ynchausti Commercial House, which was built in 1905 and used as a trading store. Like most Spanish colonial houses in the country, it is the typical bahay-na-bato with solid red-brick walls on the first floor and wood panels on the second floor. It also has wide Capiz-shell windows that are a distinct design of old Spanish houses.

“Tanduay has a rich history that started in the island of Negros. As we celebrate the 165th year of Tanduay Distillers this year, we would like to ensure that Tanduay will always be remembered, especially by the next of generations of Filipinos,” said Lucio K. Tan, Jr., president and chief operating officer, Tanduay Distillers, Inc.

Incidentally, as part of its anniversary celebration, the Lucio Tan Group-owned Tanduay Distillers, Inc has embarked on the conversion of its distillery in Manila into a museum that will showcase its rich and colorful history. It will likewise give its visitors a multi-sensory experience on how its products are made.

“The Tanduay Museum will be housed at our old office in Quiapo, where Ynchausti Y Cia operated their liquor facility. We plan to restore part of the original building, but since it will be a brand museum, expect that it will have a modern façade and will utilize technology at par with the world’s contemporary museums,” Tan, Jr. revealed.

Sun Crew wins Coca-Cola Barkada Award for Innovative Programs to Empower Children and Communities

Thursday, February 14

Coca-Cola Foundation president, Cecile Alcantara, awards the special Coke Barkada Award to Sun Crew co-founder and manager, Wemar Bonono, for the Sun Crew’s initiatives on education and environmental protection.

Siargao has witnessed a major spike in tourism in recent years because of avid Filipino and foreign surfers flocking to the surfing capital. Because of this, many local children have also developed a passion for the water sport. Seeing this desire among the local youth, a group of dedicated individuals were inspired to put up the Sun Crew, using surfing as a tool to make a positive change in the lives of the island’s locals.

At the 16th Ten Accomplished Youth Organization (TAYO) Awards, the Sun Crew was recognized as one of the main winners and was honored with the Coke Barkada Award for its innovative programs that have empowered local children and communities to build a brighter future and play a key role in protecting the environment.

Wemar Bonono, Sun Crew manager and co-founder, shared that his inspiration behind establishing the organization was to help the local children, especially because of his own experiences growing up in the island. At 14, Wemar dropped out of school and decided to work as a surfing instructor to provide for his family.

“Actually, noong bata pa ‘ko hindi ako nag-e-eskwela kasi sobrang hirap ng buhay noon kasi wala pang tourists. Tapos ‘yung mga bata, ayaw ko rin na matulad sa akin. Marami silang nagtatanong kung pwede ba silang sumali at sabi ko ‘You’re welcome to join!’Hindi kami namimili, basta nag-e-eskwela lang, ‘wag nila kalimutan yung pag-aaral, ‘yun ang importante,” shared Bonono.

To improve the children’s school attendance and to provide them with skills that will alleviate them from poverty, the Sun Crew started the Smart Sustainable Surfers (SSS) program where children earn Surfer Points for attending school and participating in other programs in exchange for surfboard use and surfing lessons. The SSS program resulted in a 100% increase in school attendance, with students attending 4 to 5 times a week.

Aside from motivating students to attend school; one of the main thrusts of Sun Crew is to make the children and the local community the custodians of the island’s environment. To address the increasing waste that is produced with rising tourist arrivals, Sun Crew conducts weekly beach clean-ups with the help of the Smart Surfers, locals, and volunteers; collects and segregates the waste of the barangay; and holds eco-bricking and up-cycling sessions.

With its goal of creating a sustainable and waste-free Siargao and uplifting local communities through education, the Sun Crew best embodies the Coca-Cola company values and is aligned with the company’s vision of a World Without Waste. In January 2018, Coca-Cola announced its commitment to collect and recycle one bottle for each that it sells globally by 2030 and the company continues to work towards this goal.

The twenty TAYO Awards finalists witness the fruits of their labor at the 16th awarding ceremony.

Coca-Cola has been a proud partner of the TAYO Awards Foundation, Inc. and continues to recognize outstanding youth organizations that are building a better Philippines through innovative programs.

“Coca-Cola Foundation Philippines and TAYO go a long way. Our partnership began in 2005 through the Coke Barkada Award, a special recognition given to the TAYO finalist that shares our passion to improve wellbeing of communities with projects that are aligned with Coca-Cola’s sustainability priorities. We are grateful for this opportunity to stay connected to the youth through the TAYO awards,” shared Coca-Cola Foundation president Cecile Alcantara.

The other 16th TAYO Awardees were AQILAH (Marawi City), Association of Young Environmental Journalists (Dumaguete City), Center for Sustainability Philippines, Inc. (Puerto Princesa City), Cuartero National High School Taliamba Ensemble, FLMIS YES – O (Iligan City), MIMAROPA Young Leaders (Oriental Mindoro), Philippine Accessible Disability Services, Inc. (Lapu-Lapu City), Team BakUNAWA (Iloilo City), and Tuklas Katutubo – Upper Lumabat Chapter.

Cebuana Lhuillier Bags Best of the Best at ISEA for the 2nd Time

Monday, February 11

Cebuana Lhuillier, the Philippines' largest microfinancial services provider, won once again the distinction of being the 'Best of the Best' at the recently concluded 2018 International Service Excellence Awards (ISEA) by the Customer Service Institute of America (CSIA). The award cemented the company’s legacy as a global leader in service experience.

"To receive this award for the second time validates the positive results of our tireless efforts to continuously improve and provide only the best customer experience to every client we serve," said Cebuana Lhuillier President and CEO Jean Henri Lhuillier. The well-respected Filipino businessman and philanthropist added, "On behalf of the company, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to CSIA for recognizing Cebuana Lhuillier once again as a pillar of excellence in quality customer service. We will continue to find new and innovative ways to offer products and services that are more accessible and relevant to our patrons and that adhere to international customer service standards."

CSIA Managing Director Christine Churchill noted that the winners of this year's ISEA are organizations and individuals that are committed to service excellence by using a brilliant combination of their people and cutting edge technology to enhance their client experiences.

"The 2018 awards race was absolutely outstanding! The calibre of entries and variety of industries represented were the most to date," added Churchill who is also the vice president of the International Council of Customer Service Organizations (ICCSO). "It is exciting to see the great strides these organizations and leaders are taking."

ISEA adheres to the International Customer Service Standard (ICSS), which provides a comprehensive and practical framework to assist organizations in delivering consistently high levels of service. This standard, based on the balanced scorecard methodology, reviews organizations to determine if the customer is the focus of the business and how that is supported through culture, processes, procedures, training, hiring practices, and daily actions.

It was in 2016 when Cebuana Lhuillier bagged its first "Best of the Best" award. In the same year, the company also secured its re-certified ICSS Gold status and achieved an overall average score of 8.70, the highest achieved by an organization, for the second year in a row.
