Driving Sustainability, Shaping Futures: USANA PH Donates 200 Recycled Plastic Chairs

Monday, December 2

USANA Philippines, the number one vitamins and dietary supplements in the country, has taken an empowering step of donating 200 recycled plastic chairs to the students of Pulilan Central School. This activity is part of USANA’s broader commitment to sustainability and community empowerment. The donation highlights their efforts to reduce carbon emissions while actively supporting local education and fostering environmental awareness.

The chairs, composed of 30 kilos of compressed plastic each, are byproducts of USANA’s internal campaign among its employees and associates which encourages them to donate their used plastics and USANA product bottles. Huge transparent bins are placed in their offices nationwide alongside a sample of the recycled plastic chair – a proof of the possible outcome of their donations and efforts.

“We want to impart awareness among our customers, employees, and associates by ensuring that they are aware that those plastic bottles can be recycled to something that would actually be beneficial to the community”, shared Cherry Dionisio-Ampig, USANA Philippines’ General Manager. “In doing so, we can ensure that USANA can inspire a community of environmentally conscious individuals as we maintain our responsible company practices through our sustainable activities especially since we are reaching our 16th year in the Philippines”, she added.

This donation to Pulilan Central School not only provides the students with durable and eco-friendly school chairs but also serves as a testament to how USANA is turning its sustainability efforts into tangible benefits for local communities. Moreso, it serves as springboard to the endless possibilities a simple donation of a used plastic can do.

USANA Philippines is anchored on its core values of community, integrity, excellence, and health. Through the value of community which rests on three main pillars namely people, product, and planet, USANA aims to foster a culture of responsibility and encourage individuals to take proactive steps in waste reduction and environmental stewardship.

Addressing Hunger and Food Waste: Allianz PNB Life Supports Food Sustainability

Sunday, June 2

One of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals is to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. In the Philippines, food security has been a long-standing problem, with millions of children going hungry due to poverty and lack of access to food. Conversely, food waste is an environmental problem, as food materials that are thrown into the landfills decompose and release carbon dioxide, thereby contributing to the climate crisis.

Allianz PNB Life's Commitment to Zero Hunger

Allianz PNB Life (AZPNBL) is taking a proactive role in addressing these pressing issues by partnering with Scholars of Sustenance PH (SOS PH), a non-profit organization that rescues good quality surplus food to make nutritious meals available for the most vulnerable communities. This partnership signifies a crucial step towards Zero Hunger and sustainable food management.

Donation of "KaGat" Food Truck

Through this partnership, AZPNBL donated a food truck named “KaGat,” which SOS PH uses for collecting and distributing meals to the communities. “KaGat,” which means 'bite' in Filipino, reflects the company’s unwavering dedication to taking a substantial "bite" out of food waste and hunger.

Engaging Employees in Community Efforts

To bring them closer to the communities, AZPNBL employees participated in a food drive and kitchen immersions, benefiting 1,500 individuals, including children in conflict with the law and their relatives, in 2023. They also participated in the 2023 KaGat Summit. This year, AZPNBL will continue supporting the SOS PH Food Rescue Program by investing time and talents of employees in two food rescue and food drive activities, and as a partner of the Zero Summit Philippines. The summit rallies food industry leaders and sustainability advocates from academia, business, civil society, and government agencies towards the vision of ZERO food waste and ZERO hunger future.

Significant Impact on Communities

The partnership between AZPNBL and SOS PH has already made a positive impact on the communities they serve. Through the Allianz-sponsored truck KaGat, Scholars of Sustenance Philippines has been able to rescue 286 tons of food, curbing 779 tons of CO2 emissions. They have likewise distributed and served 1.2 million meals to more than 60 community partners.

Reaching Vulnerable Communities

With the support of Allianz and their sponsorship of KaGat, SOS PH has been able to reach various communities facing food insecurity, delivering much-needed meals directly to those in need. "This collaboration has enabled us to rescue surplus food efficiently, ensuring it doesn’t end up in landfills where it could cause significant environmental harm. This partnership is not only fighting hunger but also promoting sustainability and reducing our environmental footprint. It embodies our shared commitment to making a positive impact on both people and the planet. One of the key impacts of the Allianz-SOS PH partnership is that having a reputable name like Allianz associated with us serves as a 'stamp of quality' for our work and organization as a whole,” says Arthur Winston Bitagcol, SOS Global Director of Operations.

Statements from AZPNBL Leadership

AZPNBL Chief Marketing and Sustainability Officer Gino Riola says, “We are proud to support this endeavor to end hunger among our vulnerable sectors and offer more access to good nutrition in our communities. With our mission to secure the future of the Filipino, we are tasked to do our part in ensuring more equitable access to food. Through the ‘KaGat’ food truck we can take a bite out of hunger and replace it with hope.”

Future Initiatives

SOS PH is set to expand its reach this year with the Healthy School Meals Program that will provide nutritious meals to students, ensuring they can concentrate on their education, and the Rescue Farm Program which aims to reduce agricultural waste and support farmers simultaneously.

Tindahan Extra Mile: Coca-Cola Philippines' Innovative Recycling Program Takes Metro Manila by Storm

Friday, January 19

Consumers in Metro Manila now have a convenient and environmentally friendly way to dispose of their empty PET bottles, thanks to the Tindahan Extra Mile (TEM) initiative. Coca-Cola Philippines, in collaboration with Basic Environmental Systems and Technologies, Inc. (BEST), has rolled out this Balik PET Bottle Program, involving over 2,200 sari-sari stores and carinderias. Not only does this program extend the life of PET bottles, but it also provides financial incentives for participating store owners.

Promoting Environmental Sustainability and Earning Incentives

The TEM collection bins are strategically placed in front of participating stores, making it easy for consumers to drop off their empty bottles and cans for recycling. After collection, PET bottles are weighed at each store, and the data is recorded in the store owner's bXTRA app account. Points are earned based on the quantity of bottles collected, and store owners can exchange these points for cash or opt to acquire Coca-Cola products and merchandise.

Carolina Catimbang

Carolina Catimbang, a store owner in Brgy. West Bicutan, expressed her gratitude, stating, “Malaking tulong sa amin ‘tong programa, kaya salamat talaga sa Coca-Cola. Kumikita na kami, nakatutulong pa kami sa kalikasan” (This program is a big help to us. We are earning while also helping the environment).

Inspiring Collective Action Toward Recycling

Lolita Repia

Store owners like Lolita Repia find inspiration in recycling, noting that it is exciting to know that the collected bottles will be reused. The program has gained such momentum that customers now automatically deposit their PET bottles in the bins, showcasing the success of collective action toward recycling.

PASCO National President Elilyn Gadia and National Treasurer Emma Alvarez commend the TEM Program for setting an example for children and promoting responsible waste management. They highlight the positive impact on children witnessing their parents segregating waste and cleaning their surroundings.

Advancing Circularity of Plastic Packaging

In 2024, Coca-Cola Philippines plans to expand the TEM Program to 2,400 stores, emphasizing its commitment to sustainability. The collected PET bottles are sent to PETValue Philippines, a groundbreaking partnership that enhances the circularity of plastic packaging.

PETValue facility

Jan Vincent Mercado, Senior Vice President for Business Development of BEST, praises the partnership, stating, “Our commitment to sustainability and waste innovation comes full circle through this partnership. Indeed, it is refreshing to walk the talk in circularity.”

Coca-Cola Philippines' commitment to plastic waste reduction is further exemplified by the introduction of new bottles made from 100% recycled PET plastic. These innovative bottles are available in Coca-Cola Original (190ml), Wilkins Pure (500ml), and Sprite 500ml, contributing significantly to reducing the use of virgin plastics.

Coca-Cola Philippines' Tindahan Extra Mile program is not just a recycling initiative; it's a testament to how collaboration between corporations and local businesses can create positive environmental and economic impact. As the program expands, it inspires consumers and businesses alike to actively participate in the journey towards a more sustainable and circular future. To discover more about Coca-Cola Philippines’ recycling initiatives and locate the nearest collection points, consumers can visit the Coca-Cola Sustainability Hub.

Celebrating everyday Filipino heroes

Wednesday, January 10

‘Not all heroes wear capes’ and this is especially true for the everyday heroes who selflessly and consistently go the extra mile to improve the daily lives of others or help those who are in need.

HOPE, an impact organization that invests 100% of its profits for the building of public school classrooms and environmental interventions, recently paid tribute to everyday heroes by recognizing three Filipino heroes through the recent virtual HOPE Hero Awarding Ceremony.

“Our Hero Awards was inspired by the many stories we have heard over the years at HOPE. Whether it is a farmer who has so little and yet decides to donate part of his parcel of land so that a school may be constructed for the village children, or a teacher that walks 4 hours each way to accompany her students who live in a remote area to school - we are constantly blown away by the selfless actions that guarantee - HOPE for others.,” said Nanette Medved Po, HOPE founder and chairwoman.

Cynthia Caridad Abdon-Tellez

Leading the roster of inspiring awardees is Cynthia Caridad Abdon-Tellez, who won Hope Hero of the Year, the top award of the recognition program, for establishing the Mission For Migrant Workers in (MFMW) in 1981. The organization provides essential services to approximately 30,000 domestic workers in Hong Kong, many of whom are women from underdeveloped countries. Her work extends to addressing issues of underpayment, overwork, debt, discrimination, and even physical and sexual abuse.

“The recognition means a lot to my organization. It is giving light to the plight of migrant workers, which is not a bed of roses,” exclaimed Abdon-Tellez.

But her work doesn’t stop there. In order to keep her advocacy going, she also admitted that she needs the support of others. “We need more people to help us raise funds or connect us to people and organizations who can financially support our work. Support services for migrant domestic workers is one of the least-funded sectors in Hong Kong.”

Anton Mari Lim

Another HOPE Hero is runner-up Anton Mari Lim, co-founder, president and CEO of the Yellow Boat of HOPE Foundation. Through this project, he was able to donate safe transportation in the form of 5,000 yellow boats, ensuring that children in remote areas can access education which has led to increased school attendance in the Zamboanga Peninsula.

With this recognition from HOPE Hero Awards, Lim hopes to raise more awareness about their work, drawing more attention to the challenges faced by children in remote communities in the Philippines. “Getting involved in our advocacy is open to everyone who believe in the power of education and community empowerment. People can contribute by volunteering their time and skills, donating to our cause, or simply spreading the word about our mission,” he concluded.

Zacarias Mansing

Like Lim, HOPE Hero runner-up Zacarias Mansing is also focusing on education of children. A wheelchair-bound PWD, Mansing embodies the spirit of a socio-civic volunteer and motivational speaker. Despite being paralyzed from the chest down, he continues to inspire others through his initiative “Books for Kids” that aims to be a catalyst for children to develop a love of reading and elevate literacy levels in public schools, especially in the remote areas of Negros Oriental.

“Being the only finalist and runner-up with physical disability is a huge honor because I was able to prove that community service is not exclusively meant for the physically abled,” said Mansing, adding that the award will help him gain the attention and respect, especially among school children because they can easily relate and connect the lesson they have learned in class about being a hero.

HOPE Hero Awards is a recognition program that shines a spotlight on those who have dedicated time, resources, and creativity towards uplifting the lives of others, earning them well-deserved recognition for inspiring others to follow their footsteps to create meaningful and lasting change.

PLDT Group's Sustainable Gifting: Nurturing Visayas and Mindanao Communities

Wednesday, January 3

Championing Environmental Conservation and Local Development Through Thoughtful Initiatives

In an unwavering commitment to social responsibility, PLDT, Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), and the PLDT-Smart Foundation (PSF) are spearheading a sustainable gifting movement in Visayas and Mindanao. With a focus on environmental conservation and community development, these initiatives aim to create stronger, greener, and more connected communities for a promising future.

Empowering Communities with #PlantSmart Kits

PLDT and Smart are taking substantial steps to empower communities with sustainable practices. The distribution of #PlantSmart kits is a notable initiative, providing beneficiaries across Visayas with easy-to-grow seeds, loam soil, and organic fertilizers. Designed to be user-friendly, these kits encourage communities, regardless of gardening experience, to adopt sustainable practices.

To further enhance sustainability, select beneficiaries are receiving rain barrels for storing rainwater, preventing flooding during torrential rains. This practice not only conserves water resources but also minimizes runoff and mitigates soil erosion. Noteworthy beneficiaries include Borongan City, Municipality of Cordova, University of Cebu Main, Banilad, and Maritime Education and Training Center campuses, DepEd Cebu City Division, and Sipaway Ecotourism Workers Association in Negros Occidental.

Boosting Livelihood and Tourism with Boat Donations

Palina Greenbelt Ecopark

PSF is contributing to the livelihood and tourism sectors by donating non-motorized boats to the Palina Greenbelt Ecopark in Roxas City. Apart from stimulating the local economy, these boats promote environmental sustainability by minimizing pollution and reducing the environmental impact associated with traditional gasoline-powered boats. In addition, 100 life vests and Smart pocket WiFi devices with load have been provided to ensure the safety and connectivity of Palina’s tourism workers and visitors.

Illuminating Siargao Island with Solar-Powered Street Lamps

In Siargao Island, PLDT and Smart are illuminating the way to recovery. Donation of solar-powered street lamps to the Local Government of General Luna, particularly along the Catangnan Bridge, aims to enhance safety for both residents and tourists. This initiative, catalyzed by the aftermath of Super Typhoon Odette in 2021, is expected to boost tourism and catalyze economic activities on the island.

Aligning with Sustainable Development Goals

These commendable initiatives align with the Group's commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on SDG No. 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. By fostering sustainability, PLDT, Smart, and PSF are not only providing tangible support to the communities they serve but are also actively contributing to the broader global goals of creating a more sustainable and interconnected world.

The PLDT Group's advocacy for sustainable gifting goes beyond mere technology, reflecting a deep-seated commitment to fostering positive change in Visayas and Mindanao. Through these thoughtful initiatives, the Group is sowing the seeds of a brighter and more sustainable future for all.

Sony Music Entertainment Philippines and Benj Pangilinan honor the tradition of ‘paying it forward’ through Season of Giving campaign

Wednesday, December 13

The initiative is part of a campaign to engage the country in a fight to alleviate food insecurity and malnutrition

Sony Music Entertainment Philippines (SMEP) and Filipino singer-songwriter Benj Pangilinan have recently linked up with Rise Against Hunger Philippines (RAHP), an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world's most vulnerable, to support communities in Manila that are impacted by food insecurity and malnutrition.

This initiative is part of Sony Music Group’s global ‘Season of Giving’ campaign, where the company upholds its commitment in collaborating with partner organizations through a series of in-person events and charitable activities.

For this particular project, the international record label has collaborated with Rise Against Hunger Philippines in enacting programs that are design to uplift the lives of many people through food aid and entertainment. In a collective statement, RAHP was all praises to Sony Music Philippines and Benj for spreading the holiday joy with the children this season of giving. “Their dedication to give back not only makes this holiday season merrier for the kids, but also makes our mission to achieve food security all the more possible.”

The fast-rising recording star has recently joined the SMEP team through a day of volunteering and performances at the Better World Tondo community center, which functions as a food bank and feeding center. This is where RAHP holds food drives, and the AHA Learning Center manages an after-class studying program for the disadvantaged kids.

Aside from providing relief and assistance to the beneficiaries, Benj performed two songs, including his current single, “Dance Like You.”

“Giving back has always been something I’ve loved doing,” the Sony Music talent said. “This opportunity was a wonderful experience for me. Sometimes, when you bless others, you realize later how much you’ve gained and learned from the experience. I’m also grateful to Sony and my management team from Genesis for sharing my vision when it comes to giving back to the community.”

Donning a hairnet, gloves, and a Rise Against Hunger PH apron, the young and promising artist engaged with the kids through fun games and activities and helped in the distribution of food.

In a random act of kindness, the multi-talented newcomer also talked to one of the ice cream cart vendors outside and bought his whole stock for the day. He distributed ice cream to the kids and moms who were present during the feeding program activity.

Benj shares, “We were about to leave, and I just saw the guy selling, so I just thought to help out. I didn’t expect that a small act like that would have such a major impact on them. I’m always happy to help.”

Season of Giving, a global initiative of Sony Music Group, runs throughout the holiday season in collaboration with charity partners across Africa, Asia, Australia/New Zealand, Canada, Continental Europe, Latin America, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

In addition to Benj Pangilinan, other notable artists who have volunteered with partner organizations and Sony Music Entertainment in the past two years include Shoti, NOBITA, and Hazel Faith.

This campaign also represents the company’s ongoing philanthropic commitment to forge partnerships and support communities that need it most, which are anchored in its culture of making a difference and contributing to social development through music.

“At Sony Music Philippines, we believe in using our platform to not only entertain but also to uplift and empower communities,” Roslyn Pineda, General Manager, Philippines, Sony Music Entertainment, explains in a press statement. We are committed to continuing our Season of Giving initiatives and partnering with organizations like Rise Against Hunger Philippines to create a positive impact in our society.”

Pineda adds, “Together with artists like Benj Pangilinan, we look forward to more opportunities to give back and make a difference in the lives of those who need it the most. We are immensely proud of their dedication and grateful to have such compassionate individuals as part of our Sony Music family.”

Empowering communities: Coca-Cola's efforts to help Filipinos in water-stressed areas

Tuesday, November 21

In the Philippines and around the world, people are experiencing the impact of a warming planet through changes in water—from floods to droughts to rising temperatures in oceans. These changes adversely affect farming communities and create challenges in food production.

With presence in more than 200 countries and territories, The Coca-Cola Company recognizes its responsibility to protect local water resources and help people who live in places that face water scarcity. Coca-Cola gives priority to communities near its facilities, urban hubs where its products are sold, and rural farming areas where it sources and grows its ingredients.

The company also invests in initiatives to reduce water in making beverages and to treat and reuse water where possible. The goal is to return to nature and communities the amount of water used to produce its products. Efforts to preserve nature and biodiversity and promote advanced water management practices are also among the company’s priorities.

In the Philippines, water stewardship programs led by the Coca-Cola Foundation Philippines (CCFPI) are aiding farmers in securing water for their crops through enhanced irrigation efficiency and reduced water contamination.

Watershed projects supported by the CCFPI promote nature-based solutions, such as reforestation, wetland and meadow restoration, invasive species removal, and check dam construction. These projects highlight the importance of sustainable food production systems and resilient agricultural practices, as they aim to boost farmers' productivity and empower communities to build resilience against climate change.

Moreover, local water programs and partnerships supported by the CCFPI have empowered hundreds of communities to access clean water by facilitating the development and installation of ramp pump technology in remote areas, addressing the persistent challenge of limited electricity and water access in households. Watch a video highlighting these efforts here:

All these efforts align with The Coca-Cola Company's 2030 Water Security Strategy, which focuses on:

Operations: Striving to achieve 100% circular water use across 175 facilities identified as leadership locations.
Watershed: Partnering with like-minded organizations to enhance the health of 60 critical watersheds.
Communities: Aiming to return a cumulative total of 2 trillion liters of water to nature and communities globally between 2021 and 2030.

Through our enduring partnership with them, we aim to walk hand in hand with those affected by breast cancer, supporting them not only in their everyday journeys but also in their most challenging battles. Together, we aspire to raise awareness and make a meaningful impact in the fight against breast cancer,” said Bel Laureola, Country Marketing Lead of Fitflop/MAP Active Philippines, Inc.

While breast cancer is a harsh reality for many women, it doesn’t have to be a fatal diagnosis. Increasing awareness of its symptoms and maintaining regular medical checkups can significantly contribute to saving lives. Fitflop and ICanServe efforts that continue towards this cause are early breast cancer detection accessible through high-impact information campaigns and community-based breast screening programs in various cities, barangays, and private communities nationwide.

To further strengthen these programs, ICS provides engaging talks from doctors and breast cancer survivors, support groups, and the educational forums “Ating Dibdibin” and “Silver Linings”.

As a thank you to the organization that has bridged them to their advocacy, FitFlop is offering all ICanServe volunteers a 20% discount on select FitFlop footwear designs. It is worth noting that many ICanServe volunteers are cancer survivors who dedicate their time to sharing their light with other patients and survivors, making their path better lit, and the journey lighter.

The real inspiration behind Michelle Marquez Dee’s advocacies

Wednesday, October 25

The PLDT Home Ambassador recalls her journey to empowerment

“It felt like forever.”

This is how Miss Universe Philippines 2023 Michelle Marquez Dee described the moment when she was announced as the winner last May.

“All you can hope for is that destiny is on your side — and it was on that night of May 13. When they finally called my name, honestly, I just felt like all the hard work paid off. When you’ve dedicated your whole life and everything for that moment to happen, mapapabagsak ka. I actually bent over because of relief, happiness, and gratitude.”

28-year-old Michelle will represent the Philippines at Miss Universe in El Salvador in November.

She is the finest fit, even PLDT Inc. Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan himself said upon meeting her, along with the other Miss Universe Philippines queens at a PLDT and Smart exclusive meet-and-greet with executives and employees at Ramon Cojuangco Building in Makati City recently.

“We could think of no better woman to proudly bear the flag at this year’s Miss Universe pageant than Michelle,” Pangilinan said. “She is smart with her confidence and authentic with her advocacies. We at PLDT fully stand beside her. We have no doubt that she will be one of the strongest queens in the field, and that she will go very far.”

Deepening her connections

Michelle celebrates, and at the same time, bears on her shoulders the legacy of her mother Melanie Marquez in the pageant world. Melanie is the youngest Miss International, winning the title when she was only 15 years old in 1979. Later on, she became a successful actress, starring in comedy films and TV sitcoms.

An actress, model, and PLDT Home ambassador, Michelle enjoys a close relationship with her parents and siblings, with whom she always stays connected through video calls.

“My mom is one of my biggest inspirations. She is responsible for why I am so strong,” she says. “She is somebody that I really look up to. She was nothing but proud. She instilled in my mind that I should shine as my own woman, be confident in what I have and what I have to offer.”

On the night Michelle won, pageant fans went wild when they saw what netizens dubbed “the snake walk.” She recalls, “The inspiration was really my mother. My trainer Ian Mendajar and I were conceptualizing the walk and really trying to personalize my choreography. We had always aspired to integrate my mom as an inspiration throughout my journey and we felt like this was the right moment.”

Michelle wanted to do something special during the coronation night because it was Mother’s Day the following day. “I dedicated my whole journey to my mom and my family. I owe it to them that I’m a strong and empowered individual.”

Michelle’s international pageant journey would have commenced in 2019 when she won Miss World Philippines, but the pandemic happened. She then joined Miss Universe Philippines 2022, where she won Miss Universe Philippines Tourism, second to Filipino-Italian Celeste Cortesi who won the crown, with the two becoming close friends over time. Early this year, Michelle became part of the cast of the fantasy drama Mga Lihim ni Urduja, which premiered in February, and throughout the MUP competition — where she first had to compete to represent Makati — she was running on only a few hours of sleep between the pageant competition and taping.

Throughout her busy schedule, Michelle constantly communicated with her family and friends. And thanks to social media, powered by the fastest broadband connection provided by PLDT Home, she realized just how much of a positive impact she hadon her fans and that she could have on young people – especially young girls who aspire to be successful in and outside the pageant circuit.

“Miss Universe is undoubtedly one of the biggest platforms to really create positive change around the world, and that’s my main goal. I want to set a great example for people to become empowered and transformational leaders,” she says. “To finally walk this path is absolutely amazing. I’ve had one of the hardest times in the past few months, and it was all worth it. Hard work and dedication can get you anywhere you want in life.”

Spreading the word on her causes

PLDT Home Ambassador Michelle Marquez Dee in support of Autism Society Philippines’ Angels Walk for Autism last April, with brother Mazen who also has special needs.

Now that she has an enormous opportunity to push her advocacies and start conversations around autism, Michelle says that everything she does must have a purpose.

“My two siblings on the autism spectrum are my lifelong mission. Being able to give to them what they need and to be a part of the solution is something that I don't take lightly. I know the kind of life I want them to live, I know what is lacking in the Philippines and the world. It means the world to me to be part of such a positive change for my siblings and for everybody that's on the autism spectrum as well.”

“At Autism Society Philippines, we see every individual on the spectrum as having their own talent and we want them to live fulfilled and empowered lives. That's why I really advocate for acceptance, inclusivity, and awareness. My two siblings were also there during the coronation night, cheering for me. I knew that they understood that this competition was for them,” she adds.

Michelle is a true example of a Filipino with an open and welcoming heart for everyone regardless of color, gender, or station in life. Even at a young age, she was participating in the charities her family was involved in. Her grandmother founded the Inner Peace Foundation over 40 years ago, which Michelle now heads.

“My father always taught me that if you have the means to give back, then you should always give back. I’m so grateful to have such strong pillars in my life, teaching me that the only way to go is to make sure that people around you are safe and taken care of.”

Going back to her roots

Michelle takes to heart the lesson her family taught her: “To always walk life full of gratitude, love and kindness.”

No wonder that when she was asked during the pageant what to her is the best the country can offer the world, she answered straight from the heart. It’s always the people. As she said, “We are the true heart and soul of the Philippines with the way we are hospitable, with our warm smiles. And we are the reason why the world keeps coming back for more. No matter where the universe takes me, I'll always be proud to call the Philippines my home. And no matter what happens I will always be proud to call myself Pinoy.”

Promoting Hygiene and Sustainability: Taguig Schools Set to Receive Eco-Friendly Handwashing Stations on Global Handwashing Day

Wednesday, October 18

In celebration of Global Handwashing Day, Procter & Gamble (P&G) Philippines, the multinational company behind the number 1 anti-bacterial soap in the Philippines Safeguard, is donating eco-friendly handwashing stations to 19 schools in Taguig City as part of its commitment to bringing health and hygiene to Filipinos across the country.

Global Handwashing Day is celebrated every year, on October 15, which aims to promote the importance of proper handwashing with soap as an easy and effective way to prevent the spread of germs and keep communities safe from diseases.

This initiative is part of P&G's #SafeWASH program in collaboration with Manila Water Foundation, which aims to strengthen efforts to promote the importance of proper handwashing with soap and water in schools. The project underscores the significance of WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) in schools, a commitment at the core of the joint project between the two organizations. The eco-friendly handwashing stations will be constructed in partnership with Green Antz Builders using eco-bricks, which are made by turning plastic waste into durable building blocks.

“These eco-friendly handwashing stations will promote proper WASH habits that will help protect students and teachers from disease-causing bacteria and viruses while also championing sustainability, says King Martin Agoncillo, Corporate Communications Manager at P&G Philippines.

In another Global Handwashing Day Celebration, P&G supported Pasig LGU’s "Apir Tayo, Pasigueno! Global Handwashing Day Fair 2023" in partnership with Manila Water Foundation, benefitting over 1,000 Pasiguenos, including PWDs, 4Ps beneficiaries, Muslim market vendors, enforcers, and health workers.

P&G has been a consistent partner of MWF since 2020 in providing students with quality handwashing facilities; promoting health and hygiene through good handwashing practices. The partnership has since constructed 285 handwashing stations, reaching over 1 million students, teachers, and other school staff in over 285 schools in Metro Manila.

MaxiLife helps Make-A-Wish Philippines Kids Live Life to the Max

Monday, October 16

In celebration of MaxiLife's 1 year anniversary, the company has collaborated with Make-A-Wish Philippines to help continue its mission of protecting Filipino's aspirations for lifelong peace of mind. After a fun day at the Mind Museum in BGC, all the wish the children wishes were granted thanks to the hard work of both companies' volunteers.

For children battling critical illnesses, the power of wishes is more than just a source of happiness but is a source of strength. MaxiLife, in cooperation with Make-A-Wish Philippines, granted the wishes of children with critical illnesses at The Mind Museum in Bonifacio Global City last Saturday, October 14, 2023. This served as a testament to the transformative power of wishes coming true, underscoring both organizations’ commitment to uplifting lives and safeguarding wishes.

"In every child's wish, we see an opportunity to make a difference. We believe that each moment counts. We are not providing financial support for their medical needs, but instead inspire hope through granting their wishes and empower them to wish bigger. Together with the Make-A-Wish Philippines, we are committed to fulfilling their wishes and make them a reality. This is the essence of MaxiLife, to be present, to uplift, and to safeguard the dreams and life aspirations of Filipinos, even in the face of uncertainty," said Mervin L. Pobre, PhD, President, and CEO of MaxiLife.

Making Wishes Come True

According to a 2021 report by the United Nations Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME), over 60,000 children die annually before their fifth birthday because of medical complications in the Philippines. Despite this, numerous children in critical conditions still wish to grow up and having fun with their friends and family.

However, the medical treatment the children undergo is not only financially draining, but also emotionally and psychologically tumultuous for many families.

This is why it has become imperative for life insurance companies such as MaxiLife to provide these families with a chance to live the way they should. As the company's purpose and vision is for every single Filipino to choose to live their dreams with full confidence knowing that they are financially protected in every moment. Partnering with Make-A-Wish Philippines and granting children’s wishes at the event is an initial step towards a bigger goal for the company - to empower Filipinos, especially in the middle class and working class, to focus on funding their life aspirations, with MaxiLife as a financial safety net against life’s uncertainties.

“MaxiLife is the best partner for this event as they put kids in need as one of their priorities and are spreading awareness about the opportunity to be the catalyst of a life-changing moment to a child,” said Aleah B. Ortiz, Executive Director of Make-A-Wish Philippines

Granting the best day ever

The event brought together 10 children with critical illnesses as well as their parents, guardians and 15 MaxiLife volunteers for a fun-filled afternoon at The Mind Museum’s galleries and exhibits. The children not only had time to explore the interactive and educational sections but also took part in exciting games all throughout the venue. After the tour, the children were in for a surprise as MaxiLife and Make-A-Wish Philippines brought out a huge variety of gifts that the children had all wished for. At the end of the day, although many volunteers and children were hesitant to say goodbye to their new friends, they all would not forget this very special day.

“MaxiLife’s key objective as a life insurance company is to encourage preparedness and promote awareness of the real possibility of unexpected critical illnesses so that when it occurs, the insured person and their family can be free of financial burden and able to focus more on recovery,” said Pobre.
