Johnny Rockets: The Home of the Dancing Servers

Saturday, November 12

The first Johnny Rockets opened in Los Angeles on June 6, 1986. This year, Johnny Rockets  celebrates its 25th anniversary worldwide. My recently promoted sister  wants (was forced??) to treat us and so we decided to celebrate at  Johnny Rockets Eastwood.

I really had a hard time deciding what to order because I want to try almost everything. But since this is the home of the original burger, might as well try the burger on my first visit.

I chose the simplest of them all: The Original. My hamburger patty is made of 1/3 pound, 100% imported ground beef that was grilled only upon order.  The lettuce, tomatoes, chopped onions and pickles crunched as I bite. And here's a treat: refillable french fries!

Those who wants a healthier option may substitute the beef patty with 100% soy or turkey patty. Wheat bread for the bun is also available.

Kids are given a paper hat, crayons and an activity sheet. Since the food is prepared only upon order, expect to wait for 10-15 minutes. The adults can pass the time by watching the servers dance. I'm not sure if there is a specific interval between their performances or if they dance whenever someone plays a song from the jukebox.

I wasn't able to record their dance. I was really entertained with their performance but if you look at their faces, there is no enthusiasm. Or they were probably too tired already. I was wondering, a song will only cost you P1, and if indeed they dance to every song played on the jukebox... I'll understand why they could no longer smile.

My husband ordered St. Louis -- thick bacon, Swiss cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, pickles and their "St Louis" sauce.  Thumb up means YUMMY!

Kid's meal for my 8 year old nephew. Their kid's meal I think is for a kid with a very big appetite. He chose the Kid's Mix and Match. This meal includes a mini hamburger,  mini hotdog sandwich and half plate of french fries! My sister's strawberry shake is the best strawberry shake ever!

I was no longer able to have my soda and french fries refilled. I don't even have any space in my stomach for dessert.

Verdict: Gastronomically Satisfied!

Hubby Birthday

Wednesday, November 9

My husband celebrated his 35th birthday last October 12 at Cyma Greek Taverna Shangri-la Plaza. This restaurant is a recent addition to our list of favorites. We had lunch with his mom and brother.

Lenin and Marx (Interesting name, huh!)

Whenever we dine here, my husband never fails to order the Flaming Cheese. Nothing really special with the taste. After all, it's just mozzarella, parmesan and EVOO. We are actually paying P200 for the flame and the OPA!

It was my first time to try the Roka Salata. This is one of their bestsellers and I've read great reviews about this salad. Roka Salata is a mix of fresh arugula (roka), chopped romaine lettuce, sun dried tomatoes, candied walnuts (yummy!), topped with shaved parmesan and drizzled with Traditional Greek Vinaigrette. I definitely LOVE this salad!

The Cyma Baby Back Ribs is so tender. It's juicy and falls off the bone. This is served with your choice of rice stuffed peppers or roasted Greek potatoes. This generous serving only costs P1200. I prefer Cyma Baby Back Ribs over the full slab I had at Outback.

For long life, we ordered Pastisado. This is a Greek Osso Bucco  -  Beef shank braised in Greek tomato sauce served over spaghetti. The Osso Bucco is very tender and tasty. It's actually delicious. Only we thought we'll enjoy it more if we have it with rice :D

I'm glad my mother in law liked the salad, the ribs and the roasted Greek potatoes.

And of course, hubby's (and mine) favorite dessert -- Skolatina! This is Cyma's molten chocolate cake served with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream. The best molten chocolate cake ever!!!

I Love PepperLunch

Tuesday, November 1

When I asked my husband last night if he wants to go to Shangri-la or Megamall, I already have an agenda. I want to eat at Pepper Lunch. But I haven't decided yet what I want to have. I tweeted about it and I'm glad I received a reply from PepperLunch Manila informing me that I better check the Megamall branch because Shangri-la is closed on November 1. We always eat at their Shangri-la branch so it's my first time at Megamall.

Pepper Lunch Megamall

I learned about Pepper Lunch from a friend's blog. His family loves good food and I always check his blog whenever I'm on a gastronomic hunt. The idea of cooking my own food is very appealing and as expected, I went to Pepper Lunch Shangri-la the following weekend. Since then, I love Pepper Lunch.

It's always a choice between Beef Pepper Rice (if I do not want to eat a lot hehe), Cut Steak and Beef Yakiniku. Whichever I choose, I always smother it with my favorite Garlic Soy Sauce.

I ordered Beef Yakiniku. This generous serving comes with side veggies and a cup of rice. I'm actually on a low glycemic diet but because this is Pepper Lunch, I declared November 1 as my "cheat day".  I opted for the Bonus Meal. For an additional of P60, I had this meal paired with Coke Light (to lessen the guilt hahaha) and my favorite Miso Soup.

My husband ordered Double Hamburger Steak with Egg and mashed potato. It was our first time to try their mashed potato and we both agreed... it's soft and smooth and YUMMY!

I noticed that after cooking our food, we started eating and were not talking for almost ten minutes.  A sign that we are enjoying our food. Then I told him, "Hey, we are not talking! We are too busy eating." He said, "Yeah." Then we just exchanged short comments. Me saying, "I love the miso". He, "the mashed potato is good." Me, "I think I'll be able to eat all the rice." :D

How much do we love Pepper Lunch?  Well, the picture reveals an obvious answer.

Bless Me Father For I Have Sinned

Wednesday, August 31

I've been hearing about how sinfully delicious this Greek dessert is. This was included in my "must try" food in Boracay. But I always end up not having room for dessert after every sumptuous meal. Last Monday, I was with my husband at Shangri-la Mall and we decided to dine at Cyma Greek Taverna. I must not let the chance of indulging pass me by.

The waiter was smiling when I ordered Skolatina. He must have sensed the excitement in my voice when I said, "and I want an order of Skolatina!" The warm molten chocolate cake, the vanilla ice cream and the caramel sauce in one plate is so sinful! Especially for me because I have been watching my insulin level. Oh how I wish they'll make a sugar-free version of this. This is my new comfort food, If only I could have it as often as I want.

Cafe By The Ruins

Saturday, April 2

I recently visited Baguio to attend the wedding of a dear friend. it was actually our first time to meet in person after years of communicating online. We met through a blog site and what has started out as a simple comment on a blog post blossomed into friendship. My friend and her not-so-new husband met with me and my husband for breakfast the day after the wedding. Isn't she sweet! She suggested that we try out Cafe by the Ruins . What an angel! I really want to try that restaurant because of the reviews I have read when I was planning the trip.

The four of us ordered the Filipino "Lon-Si-Log". This is not your ordinary longsilog. The longganisa is cooked without the casing. A bit crispy and tastes garlicky. The meal includes a fruit cup and coffee. The free coffee came with what I thought was a mini cookie. My friend told us that it is the sweetener. You simply drop it into your cup and then let it melt. It was great she told us that or I might have eaten it like a cookie. My friend's husband wanted us to try the Sticky Buns. Too bad it was not available. He instead ordered Glazed Cinnamon Rolls. I'm not a big fan of anything cinnamon but I genuinely loved their cinnamon rolls. I am curious with the Crispy Tapa but did not find it in the Breakfast menu. Must try when I return! It was our last day in Baguio. After the breakfast, me and my husband  just head back to The Manor to check out then we're off to Victory Liner.

The newlywed gave us "pabaon" to have something to eat during the 5 hour trip. I was sleeping most of the trip and so the "pabaon" was eaten the next morning for breakfast. I love the kamote bread. I had it paired with butter, strawberry jam, sunny side up and bacon. For the basil bread, I cooked pasta for dinner and they complemented each other.
