Scam or Not: How To Spot A Pyramid Scheme

Tuesday, June 9

If you have a Facebook account, you probably have experienced being flooded by posts about how to get rich fast accompanied by pictures of people with bundles of money and luxury cars. We all know that there's no such a thing as easy money. Even those who are into multi-level marketing are investing not just money but also time and effort to make it big.

I've been reading a lot about Emgoldex, Royale, SWA and other small networking /  multilevel businesses on the internet. A lot of negative feedback about these companies are all over the web. I have friends who invested in these companies and some of them are really earning. I'm a conservative investor and I prefer my money in time deposits and mutual funds even though they don't earn much.

Someone shared this video on facebook and I feel the need to share.

I wanna know your thoughts. Drop me a line. :)

Update 12th June 2015

Amongst the companies who are into networking, EMGOLDEX is the most popular as of the moment. Just this morning, an article about EMGOLDEX has been posted at GulfNews.Com saying

When contacted by Gulf News, a DMCC spokesperson denied that the companies [Emgoldex and Gold and Silver Physical Metals KG] are registered with the government regulator of commodities trading.

“Emgoldex is not a DMCC-licensed company. DMCC has taken steps to prevent further misuse of our name.”

Where To Buy Bridal and Wedding Fabrics: JJMJJ House of Fabrics

Monday, October 6

107 days to go before my sister's Big Day and so we started shopping for fabrics for the entourage. Today is a holiday and we decided  to brave the very crowded Divisoria instead of the weekend.

My sister did her assignment of googling for tips on where to buy in Divisoria to save us time. A bride who also did the fabric shopping when she was preparing for her wedding recommended JJMJJ House of Fabrics.

JJMJJ House of Fabrics is located at a corner stall BB- 6&8 Building 2 of 999 Shopping Mall along Recto Avenue.

We were greeted by the bubbly co-owner, Ms. Jo (I hope I got her name right) who graciously assisted us and even gave us suggestions. To avoid yourself from bumping into grumpy sellers (we met some!) I highly recommend that you head directly to JJMJJ House of Fabrics.

We were done shopping for fabrics in less that 30 minutes. Ms Jo was also kind enough to offer to safe keep the fabrics while we shop for other items. She even recommended where to buy appliques and ribbons.

NBI Clearance Online Application System

Tuesday, September 30

The first time I applied for an NBI Clearance was in 1997. It was a horrible experience. My mom accompanied me. I remember arriving before 8am and the queue was almost a mile long! How I wished back then that NBI Clearance is available online.

Decades later my wish was granted.

Application for NEW and RENEWAL of NBI Clearance is now available online. Click HERE to apply.

This is just an online application and you cannot print out the clearance after accomplishing this. This electronic registration systems saves you time  from lining up just to submit your application for data verification.

Once you've filled out the online form, a Registration Code will be generated. This will also serve as your reference number. You may opt to print the online application form and bring it to NBI Main office or any satellite offices or simply tell them of the Registration Code. You will then have your picture and biometrics taken.

Important: Bring two valid IDs. Make sure that one of the IDs you present is the one you stated on your online application.

DFA Passport Appointment System

Monday, January 20

I am so glad that Department of Foreign Affairs Passport Appointment System exists. I remember the inconvenience of waking up very early and queueing up as early as 3am when I first applied for a passport. I almost gave up on the idea of travelling abroad.

My recent passport will expire on August. I have the machine readable which I believe will no longer be honored by October 2015.

If you are planning to get a passport or renew your passport, you can now choose the date and time of your appointment at DFA.

Choose the branch where you want to set an appointment. I have provided the links to redirect you to the branch of your choice.

Aseana Business Park
Bradco Ave cor Macapagal Blvd
Paranaque City

Conception St cor Arroceros
Manila City

Lingkod Pinoy Center
Level 1 West Lane
Robinson's Galleria
Ortigas, Pasig

7th Floor Megamall Building C
Mandaluyong City

4th Floor Metro Alabang Town Center
Muntinlupa City

The list of documentary requirements are listed on the website. Please make sure that you have them photocopied before arriving on your scheduled date. Although there is a photocopier available but it is wise to avoid unnecessary delays caused by incomplete requirements.

I had my passport renewed at DFA Megamall. My appointment was at 2pm but I arrived around 1:15pm.

Passporting Steps:

A. Verification

You will be asked to present the printed Application Form you filled out from the website. Then you will secure a queueing number. Keep the number stub because you will need to present that to the cashier.

B. Processing

Make sure you have all the photocopied supporting documents ready. At the processing window, the person in charge will check your Application Form, the required supporting documents and will ask you your preferred processing -- Regular (15 working days) or Express (7 working days).  You will be given a voucher to present to the cashier.

C. Cashier

The cashier only accepts cash payments. Regular Processing costs P950 and Express Processing costs P1,200. The guard on duty will ask for your queueing number. After payment, proceed to Encoding.

D. Encoding

The first three steps took only 15 minutes to finish. At the encoding section, this is where your picture, thumb prints and signature will be captured. There is no need to bring passport size photos. This step took me 45 minutes. The delay is understandable because it takes 5-10 minutes to process per person. Takes longer for babies and children because of the photo capture.

You can opt to have your passport delivered by paying an extra P120.
