Shopee Xpress rider strives to achieve his dreams as a student-athlete

Friday, October 15

Josel Sisor

Twenty-two-year-old Josel Sisor carries a lot of responsibility on his shoulders. He works hard as a Shopee Xpress rider, while also striving to achieve his dreams as a student-athlete.

Josel, who is currently a fourth-year scholar, sports science major, and table tennis athlete at San Beda University, began working as a rider right after the pandemic set in a year and a half ago. After hearing about a friend who took up a side gig as a rider, he took the opportunity to earn some extra cash as well.

Though his father, a factory worker, and mother, a messenger, both work hard to provide for the family, Josel wants to lighten their financial burden by becoming more financially independent, especially during uncertain times such as these. Even before the pandemic, he busied himself with other part-time motorcycle delivery gigs to help his parents out. As the eldest in a brood of five, Josel sets an example for his siblings.

Josel wakes up before 6:00 AM each day to pick up a batch of parcels at the nearby Shopee Xpress hub and deliver them to shoppers. At noon, he goes back home for online classes and training. Whenever he has time to spare, he delivers more batches of parcels. Josel initially found

it hard to focus with such a packed routine, but eventually found his groove. “Na-aapply ko ‘yung pagiging student-athlete sa pamamagitan ng disiplina at pagbalanse ng oras,” he shares.

He is determined to create a brighter future by graduating and becoming a table tennis coach someday. He also finds motivation from his sukis, fellow riders, and his family. He particularly dedicates his earnings and hard work to his beloved, ailing 78-year-old grandmother, who underwent back surgery last year. “Gusto kong magpasalamat sa lola ko sa lahat ng sakripisyo niya, sa pag-aalaga niya sakin simula nu’ng bata pa ako. Kahit walang-wala siya, lahat binibigay niya pa rin. Ang hiling ko lang, sana gumaling na siya,” he says.

Aside from his grandmother’s improved health, Josel’s only wish is for a new motorcycle. His run-down motorcycle would often break down mid-delivery, and he’d end up finishing work well into the night. After hearing of Josel’s heartening story of dedication, Shopee donated not just a brand-new motor vehicle to Josel, but accessories and groceries as well.

Martin Yu, Director at Shopee Philippines, says, “We are deeply humbled by Josel’s devotion to his work as a Shopee Xpress rider, but most especially to his family and dreams. To the rest of our Shopee Xpress riders, you inspire us all as well. You are indeed the true lifeblood of Shopee.”

Whether as the awesome, reliable kuya at home, the driven student-athlete at school, or the diligent Shopee Xpress rider at work, Josel inspires everyone he meets. He feels grateful for the opportunity to start securing his future and the lessons he has gained along the way from his team leads and fellow riders.

As a Shopee Xpress rider, he finds fulfillment in learning how to stand on his own two feet.

Bank Frontliners: Commitment To Serve in Time of COVID-19

Friday, March 27

When I was still working in a bank, I find it extremely challenging to report for work during the rainy season. Imagine braving the torrential downpour while trying to avoid the flooded streets. Transport strikes have also tested my endurance in walking in order to make it on time (or just to make it to the branch!) and then worry later on how I'd be able to go home. With the present COVID-19 pandemic that the country has been dealing with, my seasonal struggles were nothing compared to the threat the bank frontliners are facing now.

Commitment to give more than they take

Several companies have work from home arrangements for their employees while some choose to temporarily stop their business operation. But the people working in the banking industry, they need to keep going. Like the health frontliners, these bank frontliners are giving their time and effort for the organization they work with and for the service of the clients. Very much aware of the health risks involved, their commitment to serve is truly admirable.

Stupid love?

I used to be the recipient of remarks like "Papatayuan ka na ng rebulto", "Papakabayani ka", "Ano mapapala mo dyan, baka mapahamak ka lang?". What they don't understand is an employee's genuine passion to serve and his love for the profession.

I am a BDO account holder and had a very pleasant experience with a BDO branch which is not my branch of account when I had a problem with my ATM account. It was a busy day but they were very accommodating. Now that banks have reduced the number of branches operating, the bulk of transactions at the branches in operation have doubled or even tripled. I'm certain most bank frontliners are not eating on time already.

Sometimes it helps when you engage in short conversations with bank frontliners. Jessa Venus Ilagan, one of the frontliners at BDO Aurora Blvd - Notre Dame Branch shared her story and has brought back memories of years I worked in the bank. How a simple "salamat" made my tiring day tolerable.

Some mock as for being "stupid," for risking our health, and our loved ones' safety. pero kasi iniisip din namin makapgbigay ng serbisyo sa mga clients namin. Mas marami pa ring clients na na-a-appreciate ginagawa namin for them.

Lahat po sa branch, mapa-janitor, guards at ibang officers from other branches, mga officers namin, headed by our Branch head Mam Gemma Felizardo, Ms. Carmi Valencia, our AM-OPS, Mam Cecil Mangaliman-Service officer, Mam Emma Arciaga-MO, Mam Maricris Hikayen-BA, pati sa mga relievers galing ibang branch.. sa mga branch managers Mam Rochelle Rabe of BDO Edsa New York, Sir Ariel Alcantara of SM hypermarket Cubao & Ms. Nina Ventura of P.Tuazon branch na andun din joint force para maibigay lahat ng makakaya namin, para makapagbigay serbisyo sa mga kliyente natin. yung mga hindi nila usual na ginagawa, pati sila nagbibilang ng pera, nag aayos ng transaction, para mapabilis lahat ng trabaho gagawin na nila.. sobrang nag exceed sila sa normal na ginagwa nla. Yung trabaho nadistribute ng maayos. Lahat tumutulong.

For our protection naman po, we wear masks and gloves. At todo hugas ng kamay at alcohol every now & then.

Be part of the solution

If it took an hour or two waiting for your turn to transact, please don't pour your frustration out on the guards and the bank frontliners.  I understand that some of us are already stressed out or overwhelmed. It's a difficult time for all of us. Let us be part of the solution. You can bank the safe way at home with online banking. You will also help in reducing the risk of spreading  COVID-19.

#MyBankHero

From a former bank employee to the present day bank frontliners, YOU ARE #MyBankHero and I really appreciate your sacrifice.

My dear readers, the next time you transact in the bank, greet the bank frontliners with a smile and say "Thank you" before leaving the counter. It means a lot.

Do You Know Your Ikigai?

Tuesday, August 9

It's a rainy Tuesday and I was lazily lying on my bed when suddenly I thought of browsing my 2015 Belle de Jour Power Planner. Written on my 2015 financial goals were monetize my blog and have a freelance work. My blog has been earning a few cents on Google Adsense but I didn't land any freelance work last year. The reason why I was a bit depressed during the last few weeks of 2015 and the first week of 2016.

When I received my personalized BDJ planner last year, I was so excited to fill in the pages. The most difficult part for me though was answering the question, "What's your Ikigai?" That part of the planner remained empty except for the three words I wrote under "That Which You Love".

What is Ikigai?

Ikigai is the reason why you get up in the morning. For me, it is the reason why I am excited to get up in the morning. I used to waste my life away staying in bed all day. For months I've been suffering from depression.

Then..

Are you doing something that you love? Hmm.. I think so.
Is it something that the world needs? I don't know.
Are you good at it? I'd like to think I am.
Can you be paid for it? Hopefully.

Now..

Are you doing something that you love? Yes!
Is it something that the world needs? Definitely!
Are you good at it? I am and I keep getting better.
Can you be paid for it? I am paid for it!

PSST.Ph is the best thing that happened to me in January. I was broke and I was almost convinced that although I love what I am doing, I am not good enough to get paid for doing it. I was not even sure I'm fit for the freelance job offered. I just grabbed the opportunity and see how far it will take me. I'm on my 7th month with PSST and I am so blessed to be #PartOfTheStory

Have you been in the same situation I was months ago? Devote time to reflect and answer the questions to know your Ikigai.

Yesterday I Cried

Thursday, September 1

"Life is about cleaning up the crap and, while you're doing it,
being okay with the fact that you have to do it.... A word of caution.
You can't get caught up in the crap! If you do,
you will surely lose sight of the real meaning of life and lose your Self."
My friend sent me a book written by Iyanla Vanzant. It has been with me for a week now but I just can't get past the page where the poem is written. One of the best poems I have ever read. I envy the author because after reading the poem, I felt like this is the poem I wish I had written.

The book YESTERDAY I CRIED is an inspirational book about celebrating the lessons of living and loving. I'm so lucky to have a friend who knows the kind of books I like. This book is such a treasure. I recently installed the Kindle for Android on my phone and I hope I'll find an e-book version of this.
