Women and Asbestos Exposure Effect on Infertility

Wednesday, May 2

Being able to produce a healthy child is a wonder of the female body. Many women cherish the day that they can bring new life into the world. Challenges face this wonder when cancer development is part of the woman's life. With National Women’s Health Week approaching (Mother’s Day), learn more about cancer and its link to asbestos exposure. Lung cancers, including mesothelioma, can be the result of certain environmental factors.

Where Does Mesothelioma Come From?

Mesothelioma is technically a rare form of lung cancer. It stems from asbestos exposure. Asbestos is a fibrous substance that was used extensively in structures of the past for its heat-resistant qualities. Women's risk factors include workplace exposure or living in the same home with a partner who brings asbestos home on the clothes or shoes.

In fact, recent studies suggest that asbestos fibers can remain as dust in the household where women are constantly exposed to them. As asbestos triggers cancer tumors, women's fertility becomes an issue.

Understanding the Fertility Aspect

The hopeful aspect to fertility and cancer is the fact that a diagnosis doesn't automatically cause infertility. Women have a choice with their reproductive systems as this point. They can still have children, but extensive planning must be part of the treatment.

Infertility stems from cancer treatment and not the tumors themselves. The asbestos fibers that were breathed in over the years have impacted the lungs. Cancer may be present in this area, but the reproductive organs are still strong and viable for supporting a child.

Fighting Back With Advanced Medicine

Science has linked infertility to asbestos exposure and mesothelioma, but women have definite choices. As soon as women know about their diagnoses, discussions should begin about saving eggs. Placing the eggs in a frozen state preserves them until a later date. It ultimately saves them from any infertility issues.

The eggs must be removed before cancer treatment. Radiation and chemotherapy are the reasons why women deal with infertility in the first place. The treatment that rids the body of tumors is just too strong for the delicate eggs. Removing them for fertilization later on is the best chance for a fertile future.

Looking Ahead to Future Children

Women have a good chance at regaining their health through early diagnoses and aggressive treatments. Those frozen eggs can now be put to good use. The patient may be healthy enough to carry the child as a normal pregnancy. Doctors simply implant fertilized eggs into the woman.

Cancer treatment can be rough, however, which may lead to some complications. Keep hope on your side because surrogacy is an option. The woman's egg can be fertilized and implanted into a willing surrogate. New life overshadows the ailment now.

So many advancements have made it possible to fight off lung cancer. Take a moment during National Women’s Health Week to recognize these leaps toward a healthier future. Women can bring a child to term with attention to their health across the years. Don't let cancer define the child-bearing years. Infertility is a challenge that can be managed.

Treatment Options For Infertility

Thursday, October 26

Every month, many women feel depressed whenever their period come after being delayed for a few days. Many couples are wishing to see two pink lines and hope for a positive no matter how blurred the second line is. I was (am) one of them.

I used to think that getting pregnant is the easiest, most natural thing that will happen to a woman. I was wrong. Sometimes I regret waiting to long. I am like most of the women my age. Career-driven. Everything happening in my life is well-planned. I was in my 30s when me and hubby decided it's about time we start a family. We have our own house, a car, a stable career. Perfect time, isn't it?

Well, I learned that conceiving isn't as easy and as natural as it should be for me. After two years of trying to conceive (TTC) and countless of pregnancy test kit wasted, I remained childless.

Merck Fertility Awareness 2017

Merck Philippines understands what every couple longing for a child feel. The company have been advocating Fertility Awareness in the past five years to let couples know that there is hope and to educate them about fertility and their options.

Did you know that 1 out of 10 Filipinos suffer from infertility?

When a couple is having difficulty conceiving, people are always pointing finger to the woman. Infertility is a disease of the reproductive system and the male infertility factor should not be overlooked. If you have been trying to achieve pregnancy in the last 12 months, it's about time to consult a Reproductive Endocrinologist.  REs are fertility doctors that have intensive training, with focus on the complex human reproductive system. They can guide you and give you a clearer idea of what to expect when you start fertility treatments should you have fertility issues.

Treatment options for infertility

The Reproductive Endocrinologist assesses the condition of patient. Factors such as age, # of years trying to conceive, medical history are taken into consideration. The doctor will then start with the least invasive and most cost-effective option to get the patient pregnant.

  • at least one of the fallopian tubes has to be open
  • total motile sperms inseminated should be 5 million
  • chances of getting pregnant per cycle: 15-20%
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
  • there should be a minimum number of developing follicles
  • the fallopian tubes are not required
  • there should be a minimum number of "good-looking sperms
  • chances of getting pregnant: 35 years old and younger - 41% ; up to 42 years old - less than 12%

Dennis and Maurine Basilio have been married for 16 years and were trying to conceive for 13 years. I talked to Maurine and we had a lot in common. PCOS. Thin uterine lining. Her first two IVF procedures were unsuccessful. She had her two remaining embryos frozen for three years before trying again for the 3rd time. Finally, the IVF procedure was successful and they now have twin - a boy and a girl.

The cost of IVF procedure starts at P300,000. The medication will depend on how the body will respond to the treatment.

Merck and Fertility Specialists Cooperate to Commemorate Fertility Awareness Month

Wednesday, August 5

Merck, together with the Philippine Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (PSREI) today announced a series of awareness-building initiatives to foster greater understanding of infertility among Filipinos. The information campaign was embarked upon to commemorate Fertility Awareness Month in August, which recognizes the growing population of Filipino couples who are finding it difficult to conceive.

Dr. Gio Barangan, Medical Director, Merck Philippines

With the observance of Fertility Awareness Month, Merck, together with PSREI aim to help childless Filipino couples to learn more about their condition and to realize that there are solutions to the challenge that they face,” said Dr. Gio Barangan, Medical Director, Merck Philippines. “It is also an opportunity for them to meet couples who were successful in their fertility treatment, so that they can gain confidence in the country’s pool of fertility experts and treatment facilities and thereby remain hopeful in starting a family.”

Part of the efforts being undertaken to raise awareness on fertility issues are to provide free seminars to patients that will help increase their understanding of the symptoms and causes of infertility. Conducted by local fertility experts from the PSREI, the seminars will also give patients hope by educating on methods to improve fertility as well as options for treatment.

Philippine Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (PSREI)
President Dr. Rudie Frederick Mendiola

Results from a 2011 Merck-commissioned study by Synovate estimates that 1 in 10 Filipinos are infertile, yet a vast majority of them will struggle in silence, due in part to the shame associated with the infertility, but mainly because many couples do not understand the condition.

The awareness efforts are expected to create an impact on couples’ attitude towards infertility, such that they overcome embarrassment and see the urgency of seeking medical assistance. It is imperative that misconceptions are corrected and that any immediate treatment procedures may be done at the soonest -- particularly for older couples.
