But as we age, we often look back and think, “I wish I’d taken better care of myself.” While young people may not like to think about getting old, they would still be wise to pay attention to the eating and exercise habits they establish in their youth. The longer they have to practice healthy eating habits and engage in an active lifestyle, the more likely they are to age healthfully.

Eating is one of the few behaviors that we get to practice several times a day. That means every meal or snack provides an opportunity to reinforce your healthy diet habits—like practicing portion control and choosing nutrient-dense foods. Every time you make the right food choices, you’re more firmly establishing good habits that will stay with you throughout your life.

I have counseled many older patients who have had a lifetime of eating badly and suddenly decide to “shape up.” It might be triggered by a milestone birthday or even a health scare, but what they often tell me is that they wish that they had taken better care of themselves when they were younger. And they find that it’s really hard to change habits they’ve had for decades. As the old saying goes, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”

It’s never too late to take better care of yourself. But if you’re young, you might want to listen up—because the habits you establish now can influence your health and well-being as you get older.

Maintaining Healthy Bones as You Age


Strong, healthy bones are really built during adolescence and young adulthood. That’s because the body’s ability to store calcium in the bones peaks at about age 30. This is a critical period during which you can maximize bone density. So, get plenty of calcium in your diet (about 1000 mg per day) and regularly engage in weight-bearing exercise. Both of which are important to building bone mass, and they’re two of the best things you can do when you’re younger to ensure bone health as you age. But that doesn’t mean all is lost if you’re older. Weight bearing activity can help to keep bones strong. Taking in adequate calcium every day (needs increase to about 1200 mg per day after age 50) can help reduce the amount that needs to be pulled out of storage from your bones to meet needs.

Maintaining Muscle Mass and a Healthy Weight as You Age


Building muscle mass can be done at any age. When you establish the right habits at a young age, which includes consuming adequate protein and engaging in resistance exercise, you’re more likely to continue those habits throughout your life. Since, in large part, lean body mass determines your resting metabolic rate, building up muscle mass is one of the best defenses you have against “creeping obesity.” That’s the slow, incremental upticks in your body fat and weight as you age.

How To Have A Healthy Liver

I was guilty of living a somewhat unhealthy lifestyle in 2017. I used to have a regular check up to monitor my health but I deliberately avoided going to the doctor in the past months. February of 2018 when somehow I felt like something's wrong with my health. The doctor had my blood chemistry test done and the result was depressing. My cholesterol was high and my triglycerides was three times higher than normal. 

A good cholesterol level is very important and the liver has something to do with cholesterol. Are you familiar with fatty liver disease?  It is a fat build up in the liver and the most common cause is excessive intake of alcohol. Those who have an unhealthy diet of high fat and high sugar can also cause fatty liver. 

How to have a healthy liver


Watch what you eat.

You don't need to starve or deprive yourself of the food you want to eat. The key is eating in moderation. Limit your intake of saturated fats, food high in carbohydrates and sugar. Eat food that are rich in fiber, vegetables and fruits.

Be physically active.

People who are overweight usually have fatty liver. Exercising can help reduce triglycerides and liver fats.

Drink alcohol in moderation.

The liver works overtime to break down the alcohol. If you are taking too much alcohol than your liver could handle, it produces a toxic enzyme that could harm the liver cells which may lead to cirrhosis, a scarring of the liver caused by alcoholism and hepatitis.


Take food supplements that are good for the liver.

Milk thistle is a medicinal plant where silymarin is extracted. It has been known to help prevent and to treat liver diseases. 

It took me three months to achieve a normal blood chemistry result. Aside from religiously following a healthy diet and exercising three times a week, I also took HepaNorm for one month before my most recent blood test. The silymarin helped in maintaining a healthy cholesterol level.

How I Solved My Sleeping Problem

I contradict myself. I love to sleep but I stay wide awake until the wee hours. It's not that I want to. I just can't get my eyes to shut down when I am lying in bed. The worst I've been through was being awake until 6 in the morning then sleeping the whole day. Very unproductive indeed. 

Too many times I was tempted to pop a sleeping pill. But I am afraid of the potential harmful side effects. And so my search for natural remedy continues.


Avoid caffeinated drinks before bedtime

Caffeine never did me good. Drinking coffee even in the morning only keeps me awake until the next day. If you think caffeine is one of the reasons of your disrupted sleeping schedule, it's about time you give it up. Also, alcohol intake, spicy food, and heavy meal before bedtime can affect your ability to fall asleep easily.


Make your bedroom conducive for sleeping

I recently had a bedroom makeover. My work desk used to be at one corner of the bedroom and seeing my laptop urges me to get out of bed to work even if I don't have to. I used the spare room in the house and converted it to a home office instead. Then I bought new bed sheets (I'm now fascinated with sheets made of bamboo fiber), made sure the temperature is comfortable, and the lighting is relaxing. In the morning, I let the sun light in. If you are into bold prints, try using plain, basic colors.



Limit your afternoon nap time

Nap should only be a short period of sleep. I am guilty of having 2-3 hours sleep in the afternoon and thus making it difficult for me to find sleep in the evening. Ideally, you should only have 30 minutes to an hour if you feel the need to rest in the afternoon.
